Have you ever seen a ghostly vessel sailing silently on foggy ocean waves in the dead of night, or a shipwreck with a cursed past? on this episode, the gang welcomes Kent's good friend, Eugene Baker, who will join for some fun and talk about a few ghost ships that you might not have ever heard of. Welcome to Episode 160 of, "What In The...? Podcast!"
Throughout maritime history, ships have been found drifting with crews mysteriously vanished, leaving behind half-eaten meals and personal belongings undisturbed. The Mary Celeste in 1872, the Carroll A. Deering in 1921, and even modern vessels like the Kaz II in 2007 share the same eerie pattern – perfectly seaworthy ships abandoned in an instant. Some ghost ships reveal more disturbing scenes, like the Ourang Medan, where an entire crew was found dead with faces frozen in terror. Others seemingly travel through time, appearing decades after their disappearance or in impossible locations. Most fascinating is the legend of a Spanish galleon found deep in the Mojave Desert, miles from any ocean. These maritime mysteries span centuries and oceans, reminding us that despite our technology, some things remain beyond human understanding.
Eerie vanishings, haunted ghost ships and monstrous sea creatures don't just take place in the Bermuda Triangle. Located between Bermuda, Puerto Rico, and the tip of Florida, this area has puzzled people for over 100 years. From the spooky disappearance of the USS Cyclops with 306 crew members in 1918 to the more recent sinking of the SS El Faro in 2015, the Bermuda Triangle becomes more mysterious year after year. Tonight we'll look at some of the strangest events in the Triangle, like Flight 19, which vanished during a routine training mission; and the Witchcraft, a boat that disappeared just minutes after calling for help. We'll look at other locations around the world similar to the Bermuda Triangle that don't get the same recognition – but are just as mysterious. And while we're in the water, we'll touch on a few ocean ghost stories, and reports of sea monsters. So before we get started, if you tend to get sea sick, you might want to grab your Dramamine.CHAPTERS & TIME STAMPS (All Times Approximate and Only Accurate For the Commercial Version)…00:00:00.000 = Lead-In00:01:21.662 = Show Open00:02:05.707 = Bermuda Triangle: A History of Mystery00:10:13.632 = Vile Vortices Around the World00:20:43.194 = Monsters Beneath The Waves00:38:49.705 = Ocean Ghost Storeis00:48:08.720 = Show CloseSOURCES AND RESOURCES FROM THE EPISODE…Bermuda Triangle sources: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/6sw5aj4j, https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/3mf3vvw6Vile Vortices source: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/2p8fhp3bOcean Ghost Stories source: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/rmhs277yMonsters Beneath The Waves source: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/596estzu=====(Over time links seen above may become invalid, disappear, or have different content. In our search for more knowledge about the horror genre, the films we love, and the people behind them, many horror fans began their journey with reference books. Long before the internet, these books served as stepping stones, introducing fans to films they had never heard of and offering deeper insight into the people behind the movies they already knew and loved. It was like opening doors for the first time—or pushing open ones that had only been slightly ajar—allowing us to explore and learn so much more. In this episode, we welcome author Bryan Senn to the show to discuss these essential reference books. With over three decades of experience writing about sci-fi and horror in a variety of magazines—not to mention his own books on multiple subjects—Bryan brings a wealth of knowledge to the conversation. So sit back and enjoy—but keep a notepad handy, because you might want to jot down a few titles to track down! A ghost ship, also known as a phantom ship, is a vessel with no living crew aboard; it may be a fictional ghostly vessel, such as the Flying Dutchman, or a physical derelict found adrift with its crew missing or dead, like the Mary Celeste. The term is sometimes used for ships that have been decommissioned but not yet scrapped, as well as drifting boats that have been found after breaking loose of their ropes and being carried away by the wind or the waves.More recently, ships which travel with their mandated Automatic identification system turned off to avoid detection and monitoring, have also been referred to as ghost ships.Support the pod:www.patreon.com/monsterfuzz Check out our merch:https://monster-fuzz.creator-spring.com Everything else!www.linktr.ee/monsterfuzzBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/monster-fuzz--4349429/support.

In today's episode of the 222 Paranormal Podcast, hosts Joe and Jennifer delve deep into one of Virginia's most chilling and mysterious locations: the infamous Old House Woods. Located in the heart of the state, this eerie forest has long been a hotspot for paranormal activity and ghostly legends. Joe and Jennifer, both seasoned paranormal investigators, return to these woods to unravel the disturbing stories that have haunted the area for centuries. With a history steeped in mystery, Old House Woods has been the site of countless eerie encounters, from the sounds of disembodied footsteps and voices to sightings of shadowy figures and unexplained lights flickering through the trees. As they explore this notoriously haunted area, they discuss the origins of the hauntings, which many attribute to its grim past involving shipwrecks, buried treasure, and a long-standing history of tragic events. The hosts share chilling firsthand accounts from locals and fellow investigators who claim to have witnessed paranormal phenomena in the area. Jennifer recounts a particularly unsettling story of an encounter with a ghostly figure near the remains of an old home once standing in the woods. The hosts also delve into theories about the land's energy and why Old House Woods might be such a focal point for paranormal activity. Is it the residual energy from centuries of shipwrecks and death, or does the location possess something far darker? Throughout the episode, listeners are treated to a mix of history, mystery, and eerie encounters, as Joe and Jennifer attempt to shed light on the terrifying phenomena that make Old House Woods one of Virginia's most haunted places. Their conversation offers listeners a thrilling mix of ghost stories, expert analysis, and suspenseful exploration. In Mathews County of Virginia, off the coast of Gloucester, is the small, unassuming town of Diggs. It's a cozy little place, surrounded by the Chesapeake Bay, offering coastal views and respite. It seems normal, boring in fact. But don't let the views fool you! For if you travel down the Beach Haven Road just outside of town, you come to a 50-acre patch of dense woodland. The Old House Woods is so full of paranormal activity and apparitions that it may be the most haunted woods in America. Where else can you find ghost pirates searching for their lost gold? British Redcoats stalking the night? Armored skeletons asking for directions and even…headless ghost cows? The Old House Woods was a scary place when the colonists came to this country. The dense woods along the ocean were so thick the sky couldn't be seen through the tree limbs. It was the perfect port for men to hide and lay low from the law. Thieves and pirates were so notorious in the area that travelers were warned to stay away from the woods. The woods were used as a secret port by both Revolutionary sailors and Civil War ones. The woods were filled with stories of thievery and murder before the first incident even occurred. The name Old House Woods actually reflected the fact that in the late 1700s an old colonial building stood in the middle of the woods. It was abandoned and believed to be full of angry spirits. The house, called the Frannie Knight house, spontaneously caught on fire. Then, it to put itself back out with no intervention. Years later, the same house caught fire again. But, this time it allowed itself to reduce the house to dust. The forest has since taken the house's remains back. Scholars believe that these tragedies gave birth to the story of Hansel and Gretel. (The Grim True Story Behind Hansel and Gretel) *** Cultures all around the world have stories of tiny humans – elves, leprechauns, fairies, hobbits… but how can so many different communities have such similar descriptions of tiny people? Could there be evidence to prove the existence of tiny humanoids? (Little Human Subspecies) *** Traveling to the Superstition Mountains in search of the rumored treasure hidden there is not only a bad idea… it could be a fatal one. (Mysterious Visitors From Other Realms) *** Seeing an unidentified flying object in the sky is pretty common – even in cases where several people see the flying whatever-it-is at the same time. But when is the last time you and everyone around you looked up and saw an entire city flying in the sky? That's what happened in 2011 in the Nigerian village of Bauchi. (UFO City) *** But first… according to GPS, off the California coast there are dozens, possibly hundreds of ships moving around in circles. But the ships, while clearly visible on the GPS system, are nowhere to be seen by the human eye. Are these ghost ships from the past? The oceanic version of crop circles? Sailing ships from a different dimension?Or could it be something more disturbing, like a new type of cyber attack? We begin with that story. In 1921, a five-masted schooner emerged from the mists off North Carolina's treacherous coast - a floating tomb devoid of life. Eleven souls had vanished without a trace, leaving behind an eerie tableau of abandonment. Tonight we delve into this chilling mystery and attempt to unravel a web of bizarre clues: inexplicably damaged equipment, missing shoreboats, and whispers of aberrant crew behavior from passing ships. Was it a bloodthirsty mutiny? Ruthless pirates? A clandestine rum-running operation gone awry? Or perhaps something far more sinister lurking in the depths of human nature - or beyond? The Carroll A. Deering is a haunting mystery, reminding us that some secrets of the sea may never be fully uncovered, leaving our imaginations to run wild with unsettling possibilities. Tonight, we'll read the short story "The Magic Carpet" from the compilation called "The Day Before Yesterday" by Richard Middleton, published posthumously in 1912. We first read this story back in 2020. Middleton was a tragic figure- a young man impatient for success, who managed to live the archetypal life of the Romantic Bohemian poet, complete with poverty, unrequited love for an impossible woman, and an early, tragic death. No novels were published while he was alive. Soon after his death, the literary world discovered him. Critical acclaim followed for the brilliance of his work, and the brevity of his life. Four volumes of his collected works were published, including this one. If you enjoy this story, and also enjoy mild-mannered ghost stories, be sure to listen to “The Ghost Ship” written by the same author. Just search in your podcast app for “Snoozecast Presents: Spooky Stories”, or go to snoozecast.com/series. But just to reassure our more delicate listeners, this story, “The Magic Carpet”, is in no way spooky. It is about a young boy who uses his imagination to embark on whimsical adventures. — read by 'N' — Sign up for Snoozecast+ to get expanded, ad-free access by going to snoozecast.com/plus!
