The Dreamcast Junkyard kicks off the year in style with the first DreamPod of 2026 – and we're diving into a subject we know is close to many Dreamcast fans' hearts: the magazines.Join Brian, Tom, James, Lozz and Lewis for a nostalgic deep dive into the world of Dreamcast mags. On the UK side, we explore the unique style and personalities of titles such as Official Dreamcast Magazine, DC-UK, Dreamcast Magazine (the unofficial one), Dreamcast Monthly, and the odd but fascinating kids mag Mr. Dreamcast. We also revisit Official Sega Saturn Magazine, which evolved into something of a proto-Dreamcast mag in its final issues.Heading over to the States, Brian compares the tone and editorial style of publications such as the US' own Official Dreamcast Magazine and Ziff Davis' quarterly DCM (Dreamcast Magazine), while Lozz takes us on a globe-trotting tour of international Dreamcast magazines, shining a light on lesser-known titles from beyond the UK and US.This episode features music from Pizza Hotline from his brand new Hot-N-Ready Remixes Delivered by Pizza Hotline [In 20 Minutes or Less] and his forthcoming Demo Disc 1 EP!Looking for more Dreamcast Junkyard goodness? In this week's episode of GameBurst, we cast a critical eye over a turbulent period for the gaming industry. The news is dominated by Sony's strategic pivot, as the company confirms a remastered trilogy of the original God of War titles alongside the surprise release of the 2D prequel, Sons of Sparta. However, this nostalgic revival is offset by the somber news of the closure of Bluepoint Games, the celebrated studio behind the Demon's Souls remake, marking another casualty in a string of recent internal restructures at Sony. The industry also pauses to mourn Hideki Sato, the visionary engineer who designed every Sega console from the SG-1000 to the Dreamcast, whose passing marks the end of an era for hardware innovation. Furthermore, we examine the looming threat of global component shortages that Valve warns could impact hardware availability and pricing throughout 2026. Our "Pick of the Week" segment features a diverse range of titles, from the high-octane racing of Grid Legends to the indie charm of Cast n Chill and The Rogue Prince of Persia. Finally, we dive into the mailbag to address listener questions regarding podcast analytics and the motivations behind independent gaming broadcasts.   YouTube Recommendations: The Tragedy Of Becoming Better by The Masked Man: https://youtu.be/FNAyjfDUX2o?si=Rb46TxDd3wxEXPrJ Mass Effect - Shaped By Stories: https://youtu.be/ghAXbX-F5K0?si=WxFVibwCOMD8DKS1

So I finally fired it up for a Valentine's week episode of RTG, and dammit, it's true. Sega did what Nintendidn't.For the record, I really like both games. But the Sega version looked better, sounded better, and killed me better. I found it much harder than its SNES counterpart, and that's a good thing. Great fucking game.Pending RTG Hall of Famer Mark McCue is my guest this week (as he was for the SNES episode all those years ago), and we both agree that while any Aladdin is good Aladdin, this is the premium experience. And before we make a wish, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week someone asks why games have such short times in the spotlight these days and why the gaming world is so quick to move onto the next big thing? Featuring: Ace, Ammosart, Ashgar, Belghast, Kodra, and Thalen   Good Morning Folks! We are down a Tam this week and had some topics that were sitting on our list for a bit.  We start off talking about the official end of Anthem and the Mark Darrah video that effectively provides an autopsy for the game.  Loosely related, we talk about the impending death of New World in January 2027.  This forces us down the path of talking about what the heck even makes an MMO anymore, and how we largely agree that it requires random interaction with other players to count.  We decided that the lobby-based games are PSOLikes since the first game we can remember that was that way was Phantasy Star Online on the Dreamcast.  From there, we talk a bit about Shape of Dream,s another Roguelike that Ash and Kodra have been playing.  Bel shares his thoughts on Legacy of Phrecia 2.0 in Path of Exile, and Kodra shares his endgame thoughts about Path of Exile II. We wrap the show up talking about the impending patch in Guild Wars 2 that is going to add quickplay for raids and the new Fashion Plates adjacent system.   Topics Discussed: Anthem is Offline New World will soon Die What Makes an MMORPG PSOLikes Shape of Dreams Path of Exile Legacy of Phrecia 2.0 Path of Exile 2 - Endgame Thoughts Guild Wars 2 Fashion Plates

Aging beer or spirits in the wood from the Amburana cearensis tree native to South America can add noticeable cinnamon spice and vanilla - and brewers have been more than happy to experiment when they can find (and afford) a barrel. But FDA regulations keep Amburana-aged beers in some sort of weird limbo for competitions, so we tap our good friend and guest expert Neil Fisher from Colorado's WeldWerks to drop in and school us on this Amburana-factoid. Then for the rest of the show, we just get our socks completely blown through our shoes by this lineup of 4 beers of various ages. Plus, Craig reminds Ryan of his very few strengths, we pick sides in the train versus boat debate, we dig up an early podcast slogan for appropriate use, and Craig has an interesting relationship with his DreamCast that takes things off the rails a bit. On this episode of the HOZ Comedy Podcast with Joey, the boys start off cold, (literally) with a chilly weather report before quickly warming up into a wide-ranging conversation packed with laughs, nostalgia, and off-the-rails commentary. The crew dives into current headlines involving Jake Paul, tragedies in the news, and Nigeria's travel ban, balancing real-world topics with humor and perspective. From there, the conversation shifts into childhood memories, debating Real IDs, holding flashlights for parents, first smoking experiences, and the origin story behind Hondo's nickname. Nostalgia hits hard as the crew reminisces about classic gaming systems like Xbox, PlayStation, and Dreamcast, before dreaming up casting ideas for the upcoming Street Fighter movie. The back half of the episode takes a fun detour into horror memories—from The Exorcist fears to wild Gremlins theories—before wrapping things up with heartfelt talk about animal adoption and encouraging listeners to support the show. It's a perfect mix of comedy, culture, and chaos.

The Sega Saturn holds a strange place in gaming history. It sold fewer units in the US than both the Genesis and the Dreamcast. It's mostly remembered for all the "obvious" ways it failed. Real Life We kick things off with Real Life, where Devon is suspiciously chipper and ahead on billing (don't worry, it doesn't last forever). Steven recounts The Great Lice Infestation of '25, a saga that will echo through the ages—or at least the household laundry room. Ben crowns Sektori as his game of the year, describing it as the best Dreamcast game that never existed and somehow got a remaster. If that sentence alone sells you, here's the deal-tracking rabbit hole via IsThereAnyDeal . Bennnip. Steven also recommends Arc Raiders, a loot-em-up that caught his attention, which leads to a discussion of an AI-related controversy surrounding the game. Ben had heard about it, and we dig into what's actually going on, pulling from this breakdown over at Game Rant: Arc Raiders Gen AI Voice Acting Controversy Explained Back at the table, Steven ran a Mutant Crawl Classics game where a gravitational-lensing mutant plant man absolutely stole the show. As they do. Future or Now Ben brings science to the table with a discussion on tea, coffee, and bone health. He walks us through a decade-long study of older women that found tea drinkers had slightly stronger bones, while moderate coffee consumption caused no harm. Heavy coffee intake—more than five cups a day—was associated with lower bone density, especially when paired with higher alcohol consumption. Tea's benefits may come from catechins that help support bone formation, and the researchers suggest that small daily habits can add up over time. Ben even ran the ScienceDaily article through Google LM to compare it against the original paper. You can read the summary here: Tea may strengthen bones in older women while heavy coffee weakens them Devon tackles a much bigger question: why consciousness exists at all. The research suggests consciousness evolved in layers—starting with basic survival responses like pain and alarm, then expanding into focused awareness and self-reflection. These layers help organisms learn, avoid danger, and coordinate socially. Birds, interestingly, display many of these traits, implying that consciousness may be far older and more widespread than we once thought. The full write-up is worth your time: Why consciousness exists at all Steven had nothing this week, which is honestly its own kind of achievement. Book Club This week's discussion centers on "The Red Thread" by Sofia Samatar, published in Lightspeed Magazine. The story features strong prose, an evocative world, and a compelling narrative voice. Devon respected it but didn't fully connect, while Ben loved it and Steven greatly enjoyed the ride. You can read it here: "The Red Thread" by Sofia Samatar Looking ahead, next week's pick is "The Janitor in Space" by Amber Sparks, which you can find at American Short Fiction: The Janitor in Space — As always, thanks for listening—and remember: drink some tea, question reality, and check your kids for lice.

Online game design veteran Raph Koster recently posted a new piece about how he thinks about game design, which got us talking about the history of online multiplayer, so then we figured, why not talk about that subject in a (slightly) more comprehensive way on this podcast? So that's what we did this week, dipping into topics like pre-TCP/IP network gaming, the early video game consoles' various half-baked online solutions, how Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies were both way ahead of their time, how much the infrastructure has evolved for facilitating multiplayer -- and how expected it is as a feature these days -- and plenty more.Koster's new piece: https://www.raphkoster.com/2025/11/03/game-design-is-simple-actually/PC Gamer's Everquest history: https://www.pcgamer.com/breaking-the-internet-the-story-of-everquest-the-mmo-that-changed-everything/Dreamcast online functionality and Sega.net history (with links to similar pages for PS2, GameCube etc. at the bottom): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreamcast_online_functionality Support the Pod! The final episode of Hidden Levels explores the story of SEGA developer Tez Okano and the bizarre, meta-game he created: Segagaga. Okano joined SEGA in 1992, witnessing firsthand the company's tumultuous experience in the "console wars" against Nintendo and Sony. In the mid-1990s, SEGA struggled to make hardware that kept up with its rivals. The SEGA CD, the 32X, and the Saturn were all commercial failures. For Okano and many developers at SEGA, the console wars were both an exciting time to be in the video game business but also an intense and stressful time. They worked long hours, slept at their desks, and faced relentless deadlines. And so Okano decided to turn the chaotic nature of his professional life into a low-budget, self-parodying game about making video games at SEGA. In Segagaga, the player is a young developer tasked with saving SEGA's market share from the rival DOGMA Corporation (a stand-in for Sony/PlayStation). The gameplay is a mix of a role-playing game (RPG) and a management simulator, where you recruit demoralized, mutant-like SEGA employees by convincing them to join your team for the lowest salary possible. The gameplay reflects the absurd reality of game development. Players can spend a long time creating an original, hit game or they can quickly make a bunch of trashy titles (or shovelware) that barely keeps the company afloat. Okano even told us that the insults characters used in "battles" were actual quotes he heard in the office. The game was finished in 2001, just as the highly anticipated Sony PlayStation 2 was effectively dooming SEGA's Dreamcast. As game journalist Simon Parkin notes, Segagaga was released only two weeks before SEGA exited the console business entirely. This timing transformed the game from a self-parody into a memorial for a dying era, inviting players to literally defeat SEGA's failed consoles as bosses. Though Okano's bizarre proposal was initially met with laughter by executives, the game ultimately got made and, in a strange twist, benefited from the company's decision to stop making video game hardware. Even in the face of industry chaos, some creators simply can't help but pour their love and energy into making games. Credits This episode was produced by Jayson De Leon and edited by Meg Cramer. Mix by Martín Gonzalez. Fact-checking by Graham Hacia. Original music by Swan Real and Paul Vaitkus. Jocelyne Allen helped translate and interpret our interview with Tez Okano (truly the best). Special thanks to Lewis Cox and Tom Charnock over at The Dreamcast Junkyard. Their insight on SEGA, the Dreamcast, and Segagaga was extremely helpful in the making this story. Additional thanks to Adam Kuplowsky and 17 Bit's Jake Kazdal. Simon Parkin has a book about the history of the Dreamcast called Sega Dreamcast: Collected Works. It's rich and beautiful and has even more details about Segagaga that we could not fit into this story. Tez Okano would like to thank the small team that supported Segagaga. Especially Hisao Oguchi, Tadashi Takezaki, and Taku Sasahara. Hidden Levels is a production of 99% Invisible and WBUR's Endless Thread. The Managing Producer for Hidden Levels is Chris Berube. The series was created by Ben Brock Johnson. Series theme by Swan Real and Paul Vaitkus. Series art by Aaron Nestor.
