In this episode, Dave leads off on the revived Commodore: the C64C Ultimate and the story of the original 1986 injection molds, and the brand-new "Made For U(ltimate)" software initiative. The block closes on the Callback flip phone, its wildly unstable pricing, and Dave's argument that nobody agrees on what a "dumb phone" actually means. John brings a MiSTer update — DreamSTer, running Dreamcast on a DE10-Nano by putting the PowerVR2 on the FPGA and everything else on the ARM cores, plus MiSTer Monitor, an ESP32 companion display for artwork and system stats. John also unpacks his recent travel experiences to Japan, including Nintendo, Super Potato and other fun places he visited. Dave signs off with the 486 he rescued from his parents' house, and a plea for a keyboard with a five-pin DIN connector.Topics discussed in this episodeCommodore announces the C64C Ultimate using the rediscovered original 1986 injection moldshttps://commodore.net/c-you-soon-commodore-64-ultimate-line-up-expands-with-c64c-edition-later-this-year/Time Extension: the revived Commodore's next FPGA recreation, complete with the original 1986 imperfectionshttps://www.timeextension.com/news/2026/04/the-revived-commodore-just-announced-its-next-fpga-recreation-complete-with-the-original-1986-imperfectionsTime Extension: Commodore celebrates its first birthday with the "Made For U(ltimate)" game initiativehttps://www.timeextension.com/news/2026/08/what-a-year-its-been-commodore-celebrates-its-birthday-with-a-new-game-initiative-for-the-c64-ultimateCommodore gets transparent on the Callback flip phone pricinghttps://commodore.net/commodore-gets-transparent-on-callback-flip-phone/Tom's Hardware: Callback drops to $399 by defaulting to recycled memory chipshttps://www.tomshardware.com/phones/commodore-drops-callback-flip-ohine-to-399-by-defaulting-to-recycled-memory-chipsTime Extension: the "impossible" Dreamcast core comes to MiSTer, but it's very early dayshttps://www.timeextension.com/news/2026/07/the-impossible-dreamcast-core-comes-to-mister-but-its-very-early-daysDreamSTer on GitHub — skmp's Dreamcast project for the DE10-Nanohttps://github.com/skmp/DreamSTerMiSTer Monitor — ESP32 companion display for artwork, system stats and RetroAchievementshttps://github.com/chipster6502/MiSTer_monitorSuper Potato, Akihabarahttps://www.superpotato.com/

If you want to remake a game, Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land is a perfect example of how to do it. It keeps almost everything players loved about the original Kirby's Adventure while adding new elements, quality of life adjustments, multiplayer, and even the opportunity to play as Meta-Knight. Rather than replacing the original, it offers a separate but familiar experience, wrapped in a new visual style and ready to be taken on the go with the Game Boy Advance. Joining Sean, Gigi, and Bridge today is writer, DJ, and podcaster Matt "Stormageddon" (@djstormageddon.com), here to share why Nightmare in Dream Land might be his favorite Kirby game of all time. And in addition to the main discussion, the group also closes the episode by looking more broadly back at the Game Boy Advance to share their other GBA recommendations. Questions or comments about the show? We always love hearing from listeners, and you can reach us at mail@kirbyconversations.com or submit your question to us on social media. For more from Matt, you can listen to their other shows the "Fun" & Games Podcast and Reignite.Sean also has a new podcast covering the GameCube, Dreamcast, and other games of the 2000s called Millennium Edition, and we hope you will subscribe to that one as well! Christian from Imaginary Game Studios joins Ben for a conversation involving a very important aspect of video game promoting, advertising, and audience connections. To start it all off with a proverbial BANG, Ben talks about a couple of games that he has been playing recently, Monday Syndrome and RACCOIN, and Christian professes his undying love for Japanese coin-pusher machines. Next, the fellows discuss the recently announced DLSS 5 technology, how the “message” was received by gamers and developers, and the resulting spin from Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang. On parle aussi des joueurs qui menacent de boycotter Sony pour une semaine en représailles à l'annonce de l'abandon du physique: est-ce que ça peut marcher? En impressions, on fait la ride de REM la plus folle que t'as vu avec Denshattack! Update on our week: In this episode of FreeFormNetwork Radio, Daniel, Andy, and Noel return for another laid-back conversation covering everything from current events to gaming, movies, sports, and entertainment. The show opens with a discussion about the FIFA World Cup, where the hosts share their thoughts on the United States and Mexico being eliminated and why soccer still hasn't reached the same level of popularity as football, baseball, and basketball in the U.S. The conversation shifts to world news as the hosts discuss the ongoing conflict involving Iran, ceasefire negotiations, rising gas prices, inflation, and how global events continue to impact everyday expenses—including vehicle prices and interest rates. Noel then recommends the cult martial arts film Red Sun Rising, highlighting its nostalgic 1990s action, memorable cast, and entertaining blend of crime, comedy, and martial arts. He also shares his experience revisiting the Dreamcast classic Shenmue, praising its groundbreaking design while discussing how some of its older gameplay mechanics haven't aged as gracefully. One of the episode's more reflective moments centers around an interesting question: Are podcast hosts playing characters, or are they simply being themselves? Daniel, Andy, and Noel discuss authenticity, how public platforms influence what creators choose to say, and the balance between honesty and entertainment. Daniel also talks about hosting a backyard barbecue, sharing both the enjoyment of spending time with family and the reality of the preparation and cleanup that comes with entertaining guests. The hosts wrap up with reactions to the latest UFC event, discussing surprising finishes, Conor McGregor's injury, fan theories surrounding the fight, and the future of his career. Millennium Edition is an original podcast from the Sound Stone Podcast Network, covering the GameCube, Dreamcast, and other games from the late 90s and 2000s. Join writer, teacher, and podcaster Sean Douglass, along with co-producers Gooey Fame and Darren Hupke, as they explore topics in video games from this turn-of-the-millennium period. The new millennium was a unique time for video games. Graphical leaps led to new levels of resolution and fidelity, with games that showed off advanced water and lighting effects and detailed character models. Innovations like wireless WaveBird controllers and console internet connectivity changed the way people played, and with gaming in the third dimension no longer in its infancy, developers found ways to offer more polished and refined 3D experiences. Despite their age, the games of this era have aged particularly well and remain in high demand. The timelessness of these games, and this hopeful, playful technological landscape of the late 90s and early 2000s, is what this show is all about. If you're a Nintendo or SEGA fan still enjoying the GameCube or Dreamcast today, or if you're someone just discovering games of this period for the first time, we hope Millennium Edition will be a fun and nuanced look back at a time that today feels both comfortingly nostalgic and surprisingly modern all at once. - As temperatures rise, we're heading to the beach with the 2001 GameCube launch title Wave Race: Blue Storm. The third entry in the Wave Race series, there are perhaps few games that show off this console generation's famous water effects quite like Blue Storm, a Jet Ski racing game that is still a fun (and challenging!) ride today. For this episode, we have some familiar Sound Stone faces as Sean talks with Gooey and McKenna of Flashback 64, the chronological Nintendo 64 podcast. Together they discuss the history of Blue Storm, their experiences with the game, and how well it carried the torch for Wave Race into a new era of video games. Questions or comments about this show? Feel free to reach out at soundstonenetwork@gmail.com. Love Island Reality Roundtable It's Love Island USA season 8, and Rob Cesternino sits down with Taylor Hale, Sam Phalen, and Kyle Fraser for a spirited reality roundtable. With Kirsten MacInnis on vacation, the panel dives into the biggest bombshells (and busts) from a dramatic Movie Night, plus dissects the shifting alliances and romantic shakeups that turn the villa upside down. At the heart of the conversation: who's finding real connection and who's playing games with America, and each other? Movie Night, Part 1, shakes up the villa as secrets, betrayals, and past flings come to light. The group debates whether Sincere and Melanie are finally done, or if there's another twist on the way. KC's rapid villain turn becomes a focal point, with Taylor and Kyle exploring how quickly perceptions shift and what that says about the Love Island “manosphere.” The Core Four of Aniya, Melanie, Trinity, and Kayda get their due as reality TV friendships take center stage, with the panel reflecting on how solidarity among women influences the game and long-term narrative. The episode also touches on Carl's pure-hearted return, the comedic value of Kenzie's infamous “clam slam,” and speculation around fan voting as the villa fills up with singles and stagnant couples. As tensions mount, the panel debates whether the real win is love, money, or friendship. Highlights include: Movie Night fallout and who survives the chaos KC's dramatic shift from fan-favorite to villa villain The evolving Core Four dynamic and its impact on game strategy House opinions on sincerity, romance, and manipulation (especially regarding Sincere's gameplay) The comic relief of Kenzie's antics, including the splits and her viral “clam slam” move With alliances fraying and a possible elimination looming, can any couple rival Trinity and Bryce in likability, or is a fan-favorite upset brewing? As the panel weighs in, who's playing for love, who's playing for airtime, and could friendship actually win the day? Kirby Battle Royale is a game often considered one of the worst Kirby games, and it was no doubt disappointing that the game wasn't larger in scope or equipped with better online features (especially for a game all about multiplayer battles). But behind the game's flaws is a clever minigame collection with surprisingly good 3D Kirby combat, a lot of unlockables, and creative experiments that still make the game stand out today. It was the first Kirby game to offer native support for online multiplayer, it offered post-launch DLC, and it gave players the rare opportunity to vote on new abilities to add to the game (introducing the only appearance of Sleep as a combat ability). While it might have fallen short of its potential, it's not short on fun gameplay, so for this episode, Sean, Gigi, and Bridget are giving Royale the royal treatment to show how you can acknowledge the game's flaws while still finding a lot to enjoy in it.Questions or comments about the show? I went to Japan in April and bought 2-3K dollars worth of Kirby merchandise. I traveled to Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Sapporo. This is partially a slide show of where I went, while also telling you where you can go to get stuff. I went to Kirby Cafes, Train Pupupu, Pupupu Mart, and more. I highly recommend watching the video version. 2026 marks 25 years since the Dreamcast was discontinued and Sega left the video game hardware business behind forever. That doesn't mean they didn't bow out with an absolute banger of a console, though, so we're here to celebrate its legacy. We talk about its conception at a bereft and struggling Sega, its development, problems, and eventual downfall. We also each run through our own personal top 5 games on the system, and talk hidden gems and honourable mentions. It's a must for all Dreamcast heads, although probably not if you're ride or die for Shenmue or Sonic Adventure. Sorry. Say hi to us @winnerisyou on BlueSky, check out the video version of the pod on YouTube if you prefer faces to... audio waves, and look at us on TikTok if you have no attention span. Send us Fan MailA single quarter on an arcade cabinet used to mean something. It meant you were next, you were staying, and you were about to prove it in front of everybody. We chase that feeling from the jump, starting with a Mortal Kombat movie check-in and sliding straight into a real debate about the best fighting games of all time: Street Fighter, Tekken, classic combos, and why some games got “worse” once the super strings took over. If you love retro gaming, arcade nostalgia, and the culture around classic video games, this one turns into a time machine fast. From there we zoom out into the whole era: Pac-Man at the laundromat, Donkey Kong patterns, Tetris obsession, Contra codes, and the wild speed run of consoles from Atari and Intellivision to Nintendo, Sega Genesis, PlayStation, Dreamcast, and Xbox. We also get into why gaming felt more social back then and why today's online party chat still isn't the same as a room full of people waiting their turn with quarters in hand. And because we can't stay in one lane, we pivot into sports talk and the way the NFL schedule release can swallow an entire night. Then it gets real: pickup basketball, old heads versus young legs, clock management, ball movement, and the one athletic ability we'd keep forever as we age. We close with Netflix recommendations, guilty-pleasure scripted drama, and a quick run through movies we're ready to see next. If you enjoyed the laughs and the nostalgia, subscribe, share this with a friend who lived at the arcade, and leave us a review. What happens when a video game stops playing by the rules? Doug and returning guest Noah (Gunchpot) go deep on the most creative, bizarre, and genuinely brilliant video game mechanics ever designed — from games that fake-crash your console to math games that secretly turn into space jail simulators. Games covered include Shenmue (the 1999 Dreamcast game that made boredom part of the experience by giving you an actual forklift job), Seaman (raise a fish with a human face that insults you, narrated by Leonard Nimoy), Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (the GameCube horror game that fake-deleted your save file and muted your TV on purpose), Metal Gear Solid (Psycho Mantis reads your memory card and comments on your other games), Facade (a 2005 AI couples therapy simulator where typing the word "melon" gets you thrown out of the apartment), Frog Fractions (a browser math game that secretly turns into a completely different game — then hid its sequel inside an entirely separate game for years), Doki Doki Literature Club (the anime dating sim that deletes characters from your hard drive as part of its horror), Disco Elysium (where your skills literally argue with you and you can fail a check just trying to get out of bed), and WarioWare (five-second micro games with one-word instructions and zero hand-holding). Plus: QWOP, Baby Steps, Superhot VR, Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, I Am Bread, and more. Before all that: Noah is working through 800 of 1,000 movies on his Letterboxd watchlist, watched Ghostbusters and Jurassic Park for the first time this year, and is deep in the David Lynch rabbit hole. Doug's dog Bruno had a very eventful Mother's Day morning involving a rabbit, a shovel, and a crow. Then it's time for The Verdict — the Letterboxd review guessing game. This round covers The Mummy, Devil Wears Prada 2, Nosferatu, Longlegs, Conclave, Barbie, Glass Onion, and Andor. This week's recommendations: Noah: Casino Royale. One of the best action films ever made, full stop. Doug: Potion Seller's debut album Buzzard is out now. Go listen. We had to do something special for the 150th episode of the DreamPod. Well, turns out that Tom is good friends with gaming industry veteran and design director of indie powerhouse Bitmap Bureau, Mike Tucker, and getting him on the DreamPod was long overdue.Joined by the foremost expert on Giant Killers in the Western World™, Kev, we look back at Mike's career in the games industry — from playtesting classics like Carmageddon at SCi Games, to his time at io Productions working on the cancelled Dreamcast sheep-herding title Stampede and spending many gruelling hours trying to break Giant Killers (spoiler: it broke him), right through to his present-day work at Bitmap Bureau creating critically acclaimed titles such as Terminator 2D: No Fate, and Xeno Crisis, the latter of which placed third in our 2024 Top 25 Dreamcast Indie Games community vote.Check out:Bitmap BureauKev's Giant Killers Let's PlayTom's article on StampedeThe Top 25 Dreamcast Indie Games (2024)Kev's Masio-Ball YouTube channelFeaturing music from: Xeno Crisis and Giant Killers (thanks Derek Pascarella for ripping the GK track)Looking for more Dreamcast Junkyard goodness? Back on Episode 105 we had a look at party games, and during that episode it was some people's opinion that online games don't count as party games. For a party, you have to all be together and in the same room - so that's just what we did! All 8 founding members of the Beat of the Month crew got together for a full day of gaming, which just so happened to have 8 games. So surely everyone picked a game to play, right? Wrong! Instead this was combined with Brian's deep dive and he chose 8 party games for everyone to play.So what are the games? It's quite the assortment - We've got some Dreamcast games with Power Stone 2 and Chu Chu Rocket. We've got some Switch games with Everybody 1-2 Switch, Nintendo World Championship, and indie gem Hidden In Plain Sight. We've also got an obscure PS1 game called Poy Poy, one of the few Wii U games doomed to never leave the system - Nintendo Land, and then DVD board game turned video game for Xbox 360, Scene It. It was a packed day filled with gaming (and also some wings and donuts to keep our energy levels topped off)! Don't have a group of friends to play party games with? Well come join us for the next 90 minutes and have some fun regardless!

This time we're taking a look at the second Jurassic Park game for the Genesis, Jurassic Park Rampage Edition!  While the title might lead you to believe it's just the first game with some new content, this is more of a second try at making that first game again, with similar but different levels, and improved gameplay.  Also, did we mention you can play as a person OR as a raptor? Yeah, nobody is playing as Dr. Grant. We also answer some of your questions and talk about Dreamcast favorites, a modern remake of an NES "classic", and we talk about our least favorite games we've covered for the last 10+ years.
