This is an Encore Presentation of my October 2021 interview with Joey Dee, star of Joey Dee and the Starlighters. Joey wrote and sang “The Peppermint Twist”, a #1 song in 1962 that became part of the worldwide “twist” dance craze phenomenon. He and the band were the house band at The Peppermint Lounge in NYC, where people lined up each night to get in to rub elbows with the stars of that era including Jackie Kennedy, Judy Garland and John Wayne. The list of famous musicians who played with Joey includes Jimi Hendrix, Ronnie Spector of the Ronettes and Felix Cavaliere of The Rascals.My featured song is my reimagined version of Dobie Gray's hit, “The ‘In' Crowd” from the album PGS 7 by my band, Project Grand Slam. Episode 295 features baseball gaijin, Tony Barnette and an encore presentation of Barbecue Hall of Fame member, Lee Ann Whippen Tony Barnette is a former professional baseball pitcher and the main subject of the book, A Baseball Gaijin: Chasing a Dream to Japan and Back written by our previous guest, Aaron Fischman.  Tony played in Major League Baseball for the Texas Rangers and Chicago Cubs and in Nippon Professional Baseball for the Tokyo Yakult Swallows.  Tony took a nontraditional route to the Major Leagues.  He started in the MLB's minor leagues, spent six years pitching in Japan for Tokyo's Yakult Swallows, and then at the age of 32 had his first cup of coffee with the Major League's, Texas Rangers.  Thank you to Aaron Fischman for helping to to arrange this.   Lee Ann Whippen is a member of the Barbecue Hall of Fame.  She developed her love of cooking barbecue from an early age learning from her dad and she has used that knowledge and love to become an extremely well-known and respected pitmaster.  As a competition cook she has won multiple world, national, and state barbecue championships.  On television she has shone brightly on various competition shows, winning the premier season of BBQ Brawl on Food Network and defeating Bobby Flay on Throwdown with Bobby Flay.  She is also a restaurateur who has owned restaurants in Virginia, Illinois, and Florida.  She is co-host of the podcast, BBQ Nation with Jeff Tracy. This is an encore presentation of a Sidebar episode we originally posted on Memorial Day 2023. It seems even more relevant today, strange as that may seem, consumed as we are now about questions of war and peace, and the role of elite universities, such as Harvard, in our own national project. On May 30 – Memorial Day — 1895, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., a Harvard man and then a justice on the Supreme Court of Massachusetts, delivered an address to the graduating class of 1895 in Cambridge.  The speech, known as “The Soldier's Faith,” is in and of itself fascinating substantively and also for its indirect effects. Regarding those, Theodore Roosevelt, another Harvard man, read the speech some seven years later and determined to appoint Holmes to the Supreme Court on account of it.  Beyond that, the speech is incredibly prescient, in certain respects, and eloquent, even poetic, on the question of personal courage and purpose to a degree that will seem alien to most Americans today, perhaps especially those of us who have never served. In this special episode for Memorial Day, we read (almost all of) “The Soldier's Faith” with annotations and digressions, which we hope you find worthy to reflect upon. We conclude with a look at the historical context, the United States on the brink of its own imperial moment, and the national imperative to unite North and South at the dawn of a new century. He's also the leader of The Goldens along with his sons, and he's an accomplished painter and photographer as well. William led the Oak's transition from gospel to country and they're now one of the most award-winning groups in country music.
