Listen to poet Starr Davis from Ohio share what it was like to have a baby and move and change jobs during the Covid-19 pandemic. In my very first podcast episode I'm interviewing my friend, my colleague, and my MFA classmate: Starr. She is also an editor and an instructress. In the tradition of Zora Neale Hurston, I share the stories of Black Americans in their own voices and in their own words. I do not bleep out any of the four-letter words that the poet Starr uses in her conversation with me. I seek to preserve her colorful language full of metaphors, similes, and some four-letter-words. Hence, the note that this “episode contains explicit content.” While listener discretion is advised, behold Starr's academic and colloquial mingling that makes Black oral history so vibrant.Find Starr's beautiful writing at https://www.starrdavis.com

Fearfully and Wonderfully Me: Inspiring Women to Discover and Develop the Leader Within

At just seven years old, Shavontana “Starr” Davis was sexually abused at the hands of male family members, leaving her feeling paralyzed, confused and ashamed. For nearly two decades, she remained silent about her pain. Without the knowledge of programs to support her as a child, it wasn't until she had a heart to heart with her beloved grandmother, the late Maxine Davis, that she learned the power of choosing joy. That choice led her to her purpose. Her passion to ensure that no child should have to suffer as she did, led to the creation of The Starr Institute, Inc. (TSI), which seeks to educate, engage and empower youth and the community about child sexual abuse and exploitation. TSI offers interactive, culturally relevant, age-appropriate workshops for youth aged 12-17 and the adults who support them. Since 2017, more than 2,400 youth and adults have participated in TSI's awareness and prevention programming. Another 600 people across 31 states and 3 countries have raised funds to support TSI's efforts through an annual 5K run. In 2021 Starr was named as one of ten L'Oréal Paris Women of Worth Honorees and she debuted of her first book, “The Abuse Algorithm,” which shares stories of child sexual abuse survivors, explores how adverse childhood experiences impacted their lives and how this widespread issue is a preventable public health crisis. Driven by the desire to positively shape the lives of others, she is working to build a world where young people avoid – and not just recover from – abuse.

Shavontana “Starr” Davis is dedicated to positively impacting her community through mentorship and motivation, serving as both a resource and beacon of hope for girls. Starr earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications from Florida State University and initially believed that her career path would lead to broadcast journalism, however a chance meeting with a prominent Atlanta attorney opened her eyes to the power of the law and the need for women like her in the courtroom. She emphatically answered the call and attended North Carolina Central University School of Law to obtain her Juris Doctor degree. She served as a Staff Attorney with The Office of the Public Defender, Atlanta Judicial Circuit for over five years. A native of Louisville, Kentucky, Starr came from a tumultuous upbringing that made her a resilient woman who is passionate about the care and treatment of girls within the justice system and beyond. At the age of seven, Starr experienced her first encounter with sexual abuse at the hands of male family members. For nearly two decades, Starr remained silent about her pain and did not name her abusers to her family until well into adulthood. This experience fueled Starr’s passion to ensure that no other girl suffer in silence and led to the creation of The Starr Institute. Starr’s journey to healing was a long one, and when she was a child she knew of no program to help her deal with her abuse. It is for this very reason that The Starr Institute is dedicated to uplifting girls who have been sexually abused or trafficked, and reminding them that they too can “shine where they are!” Starr has tackled her role as a family woman with the same grit as the founder of The Starr Institute. When she is not working, she enjoys nothing more than spending time with her husband, son, and daughter. https://www.blogtalkradio.com/patricia-e-adams-live/2019/10/09/starr-davis-survivor-of-childhood-sexual-abuse-advocate https://www.thestarrinstitute.org/our-story
