Is there still room for art that changes minds, rather than merely validating our entrenched worldviews? This week's guest, Jenny Tibbels, has dedicated her career to staging experimental works for the stage and screen that bridge the personal and political while morally challenging their audiences.  Jenny grew up in Baltimore, the child of locally famous activists, and moved to New York City where she worked in experimental theater and eventually founded her own company. After moving to Beacon she helped to revive the Beacon Film Society, alongside filmmaker Lucas Millard. In our interview she talks about BFS's fall program, including two upcoming documentary screenings:  Steal This Story Please! Highlights the work of Democracy Now! Journalist Amy Goodman. Healthcare workforce shortages are not a single problem with a single fix, they are a pipeline problem. I'm joined by Russ Kavalhuna, President of Western Michigan University, to talk about what it looks like when a community decides to grow its own talent instead of hoping someone else moves in. From physicians and nurses to lab techs, radiology techs, OT, and PT, we dig into the roles that keep care available in real life, not just on paper. We get specific about what Western Michigan University already has in place: a strong base of allied health education and a cutting-edge medical school, WMED, that attracts thousands of applicants for just 88 seats. Then we explore an ambitious idea that could change the math for Southwest Michigan: a healthcare talent pipeline that starts as early as eighth grade, moves students through high school and higher education, and connects them to local clinical training and employment. The Kalamazoo Promise adds a rare advantage by reducing tuition costs, making healthcare education more reachable for local families. We also zoom out to the regional ecosystem. Kalamazoo's two independent hospital systems, Bronson and Beacon, collaborate with the university and medical school, creating a foundation that employers care about when deciding where to invest and where to recruit. And because Michigan's population is aging, we talk about healthy aging research, prevention, and why keeping people out of acute care can improve quality of life while easing staffing pressure. Finally, we tackle policy: what incentives could actually keep graduates in Michigan after they train here? We discuss options like student debt relief, down payment support, and employer-friendly tools that help new clinicians put down roots. “You can't talk people out of wanting a burger.” — Erin Somers In February, Bruce Friedrich came on the show to explain how lab-grown meat would save the planet. Today's guest is less sanguine about this revolution. Erin Somers — author of the bestselling novel The Ten Year Affair and a twenty-year vegetarian — spent a year exploring our supposedly meatless future. In “Where's the Beef?”, the cover story of this month's Harper's, Somers describes the still-born lab-grown-meat revolution that wasn't. The problem, Somers explains, isn't technological. Having raised $330,000 from Sergey Brin, the Dutch scientist Mark Post grew the first burger from cow shoulder cells back in 2013. What subsequently failed is everything else. The price never fell, VCs lost interest, conservatives legislated against it, and the industry's best hope, Believer Meats, went bankrupt. Above all, the revolution never went mainstream. “You can't talk people out of wanting a burger,” Somers explains. Somers' journey ended at the iconic Berkeley Bowl where she was offered a Sumo orange, a hybrid fruit engineered to be both delicious and resilient. Technology fed her after all. Just not in the way that revolutionaries like Bruce Friedrich predicted. The revolution won't be meatless. Let's hope we can still save the planet. Five Takeaways •       The Woolly Mammoth Meatball. Somers's obsession began around 2022, when the Australian company Vow extracted DNA from a fossil and made a woolly mammoth meatball — which, because no one could be sure meat grown from DNA that old was safe, no one was allowed to eat. A forbidden food, conjured at great expense: to Somers, the perfect emblem of an industry that was always “a microcosm of what is going on culturally” — a gold-rush mentality among investors, a tech product perpetually not-quite-arriving, and a carnival of curiosities around the edges. It speaks, she says, directly to our AI moment: massive hype, cons and bills of goods sold in the meantime, and the actual product arriving years late in a different form. Her quest began with the simplest motive in journalism: “I just really wanna taste it.”•       The Technology Works. Nobody's Clamoring. The scientific story is genuine: Mark Post grew the first lab burger from cow shoulder cells in 2013 — two years' work, $330,000, bankrolled by Sergey Brin, eaten live at London's Riverside Studios — and the field has since scaled from petri dishes to bioreactors the size of a beer brewery. “They can actually do the things that they say.” What's missing is everything downstream: a price point anywhere near conventional meat (two to four times as expensive), a trained workforce, and — the quiet killer — demand. “No one's clamoring for it.” The shuttered North Carolina factory Somers visited stands fully equipped and ready to run; it simply “didn't quite make it over the finish line.” Even MrBeast, blind-testing Upside Foods' cultivated chicken sandwich for millions of viewers, couldn't tell the difference — which made Somers, still untasted at the time, irrationally jealous.•       The Believer Collapse. The piece's centerpiece has a novelist's timing. The day before the industry's trade conference in North Carolina's Research Triangle — the unexpected hub, anchored by the Bezos Center for Sustainable Protein at NC State — Somers drove forty-five minutes into the countryside to check on Believer Meats' multimillion-dollar facility and found it shuttered. The next day, sitting among the assembled scientists and funders, the news broke: the company that was the industry's best hope for reaching the market had gone bankrupt. Her deeper conclusion cuts against food moralism: personal responsibility won't slow climate change. The fix must come from legislation and innovation, “because you can't talk people out of wanting a burger.” The likely future, per past guest George Monbiot's territory: a hybrid — regenerative agriculture plus alternative proteins plus policy.•       The Sumo Orange. Is this an obituary? Somers thinks not — Andrew's analogy: AI survived its own winters in the eighties and nineties, and downturns are chapters, not endings. The scientists are still at work, the innovations will surface elsewhere in food systems and medicine, and “nothing... will go to waste.” Her ending makes the point by indirection: at a Mission Barns tasting at the Berkeley Bowl — Andrew's favorite store on earth — a marketing director walked her through the produce section and pressed two oranges on her. Walking away, she ate a Sumo orange: not naturally occurring, a hybrid born of food science, “engineered to be delicious and... engineered to be resilient.” Look what technology can give us, she concluded — “it's not so dark.” Proust had his madeleine; Somers has her orange. Richard Tuttle talks to Ben Luke about his influences—from writers to musicians, and, of course, other artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped his life and work. Tuttle, who was born in 1941 in Rahway, New Jersey and grew up in nearby Roselle, lives today in New York, Abiquiú, New Mexico, and Mount Desert, Maine. He combines elements of drawing, painting, sculpture, artist books, printmaking and textiles, often arranged in lyrical installations, yet does not settle in any one discipline or medium. Pushing and pulling between different forms and modes, and between two and three dimensions, he has developed a singular response to architecture, which is often activated in unexpected ways by the placement of the objects he makes and their arrangement in spatial compositions. And while the meaning of the works is often as elusive as their form, they offer poetic enticement for their audience through a delight in broad and often humble materiality and a fertile relationship with different forms of language. Tuttle is seen as a leading figure in Post-Minimalism and certainly contributed to the liberating approach to form, matter and content unleashed by that tendency from the 1960s. But any attempt to neatly categorise his output is profoundly inadequate and limiting. Experiencing his exhibitions, one feels part of a philosophical response to the world, a questioning of what it is to inhabit it and what it might mean to make art in it. As Richard himself said in 1975, “if the artist does a piece of real work and we see it, it's as though we ourselves are doing it”.He discusses the fundamental importance of drawing to all his work and how the line he uses “is not a pure line like most people would think. It's actually the edge of something.” He reflects on art's relationship with the viewer and community, and art's role as a positive force in the world. He expresses his admiration for Van Eyck, for Nam June Paik, for his friend and mentor Agnes Martin, and for Philipp Otto Runge, the German colour-theorist and Romantic painter. For more than a decade, one conference has been getting ahead of the headlines instead of chasing them. Host Dr. Laura Scherck Wittcoff sits down with Mark Treitel, founder of TechTainment, and Konrad Trope, the conference's co-chair, ahead of this year's event to talk about how a niche gathering on technology, entertainment, and the law grew into one of the country's premier forums for examining AI's legal, ethical, and business impact, and why staying "gutsy" enough to tackle hard conversations before they go mainstream is the whole point. Guests Mark Treitel, Founder, TechTainment A senior intellectual property and technology litigator with Quinn Emanuel, Mark recognized 12 years ago that no conference was seriously addressing the intersection of technology, entertainment, and the law. Rather than wait for someone else to fill that gap, he created TechTainment under the auspices of the Los Angeles Intellectual Property Law Association (LAIPLA). What began as a small gathering of a handful of speakers has grown into a full-day conference featuring more than 30 speakers and nearly 200 attendees from across the country. Konrad Trope, Managing Shareholder, Trope and Trope Konrad comes from a family of eight attorneys whose legal careers date back to 1954, when his father, Eugene Trope, and his uncle co-founded the law firm Trope and Trope. Over the following 75 years, the firm has represented some of Hollywood's most illustrious names, including Cary Grant, Alan Ladd, Nicole Kidman, and Nick Cassavetes. Konrad has focused his own practice on entertainment and intellectual property litigation for the past 40 years. He was introduced to Mark and TechTainment in September 2022 after chairing a panel on ethics in the age of digital media at the seventh annual conference, and became co-chair in January 2023, since carving out a niche recruiting panelists and keynote speakers who are defining the boundaries of artificial intelligence. Mark and Konrad discuss why professionalism and ethical conduct matter more than ever as AI transforms how lawyers practice, and why the legal profession, historically slow to prioritize wellbeing, is finally catching up. Clients "playing lawyer" with ChatGPT Mark shares how attorneys across the profession are now spending more time managing clients who arrive already convinced they've diagnosed their own legal issue using AI tools, requiring lawyers to sort fact from AI-generated assumption before real work can begin. His takeaway: these are powerful tools, but only tools, and lawyers still need the expertise to use them ethically and effectively. The pushback against "AI slop" Mark points to a growing cultural backlash against AI-generated content in entertainment, and a corresponding renaissance of audiences seeking out simple, well-told, human stories, citing the independent film Obsession and anticipation for Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey as evidence people still want real actors and real storytelling. Reading, learning, and the future of legal education Both guests raise concerns about AI's effect on critical thinking, particularly in law schools, where the traditional grind of close reading has historically been what makes lawyers effective. Mark argues bluntly that if students lose the ability to read and analyze because AI is doing it for them, the consequences extend well beyond the legal profession. The bigger picture: AI, dystopia, and the future of work The conversation turns to bigger-picture anxieties around AI, from military robotics to questions about what a society looks like if AI eliminates the need to work, framing these as exactly the kind of uncomfortable, ahead-of-the-curve conversations TechTainment exists to have. A shared love of things "AI can't replace" In a lighter moment, Mark reflects on losing an entire digital music collection to digital rights management, and his frustration with ads creeping into the modern moviegoing experience, both examples of technology's tradeoffs even in entertainment he loves.
