The Man Who Spoke to Plants — And They Actually ListenedWhat would you say about a man who could sit…on a cactus…in front of a live audience...…and not move. Not flinch. Not bleed.Because the cactus had no spines. Not because he found it.But because he made it that way.Meet Luther BurbankA botanist who didn't just grow plants. He talked to them. And in ways science still can't explain…they talked back.Sounds Impossible? Too Mystical?Okay—but let's talk about fries. Not that you'd ever touch fast food, right?Of course not. Never.Definitely not at 11pm in a drive-thru.Wink.But if—hypothetically—you ever had one of those crispy golden fries from a certain global mega-chain… that potato was his.The Russet Burbank.Yes, the most widely consumed, industrially farmed, French-fried starch in America—the very potato that helped launch an empire of deep-fried convenience—came from this man.The man who sat on cacti, whispered to daisies, and believed that plants had personalities. The Man Behind the Big FryHe didn't work in white coats or test tubes. He used pruning shears, a notebook, and something deeper—a felt sense of communication with plants. In the early 1900s, ranchers in the American Southwest had a problem:Cattle were starving during droughts. So they chewed on prickly pear cactus—and ended up bleeding from the mouth.Burbank heard about it.He didn't just study the cactus. He spent years with it.Talking to it. Observing. Loving it.Trying to understand the will of the plant itself.“The secret of improved plant breeding... is love.” — Luther BurbankHe bred hundreds—hundreds—of Opuntia specimens.Until one day, the cactus responded. No spines.Just soft, fleshy pads—safe for cattle. And edible by humans. To prove it?He sat on one. In front of a crowd. And just smiled. Please Share this Article on any Groups you Frequent Online… More Need to Know this Truth. Thank you! What Made Burbank DifferentHe didn't just manipulate plants—he partnered with them.He believed they had memory. Emotion.Even a kind of intelligence. He treated each one as a unique individual. He refused to follow rigid scientific protocols.Instead, he spent hours—days—walking his gardens, whispering encouragement, noting every leaf twitch, every color shift, every scent change.Sometimes he'd wait 10 or 15 years just to see if a single cross would bloom the way he dreamed.“I am not making new things... I am helping nature express herself better.”That wasn't just his philosophy. It was his entire practice.A Saint Among the RosesAnd people noticed.Paramahansa Yogananda, one of the most revered spiritual teachers of the 20th century, met Burbank—and was so struck by his presence that he dedicated Autobiography of a Yogi to him.Not to a swami. Not to a sage.To a gardener.“A saint amidst the roses,” Yogananda called him.Their connection wasn't casual—it was soul-level.On a walk through Burbank's Santa Rosa garden, Yogananda heard the words that captured the essence of the man:“The secret of improved plant breeding, apart from scientific knowledge, is love.”They stopped beside a bed of edible cacti—yes, the famous thornless kind—and Burbank elaborated:“While I was conducting experiments to make ‘spineless' cacti,” he said, “I often talked to the plants to create a vibration of love. ‘You have nothing to fear,' I would tell them. ‘You don't need your defensive thorns. I will protect you.'”And the cactus listened. That's not metaphor. It actually dropped its spines. The plant changed its biology in response to trust.Beyond Biology—Into RelationshipThis is the core of Burbank's genius:Not just biology, but relationship. He didn't dominate nature. He collaborated with it.Listened. Adapted. Guided.Yogananda was so moved by this communion that he asked for some cactus pads to grow in his Mount Washington garden. When a workman stepped in to help, Burbank stopped him.“I myself will pluck them for the swami.”That's who he was.A Walnut Tree, a Twinkle in His EyeHe went on to show Yogananda a walnut tree that took just 16 years to produce an abundant harvest—a process that should've taken twice that time. With a twinkle in his eye, he described the possibilities—for both plants and people—when guided with care and intention.“The most stubborn living thing in this world... is a plant once fixed in certain habits... The human will is a weak thing beside the will of a plant.”But with love and patient attention, even that will could be shifted.“When it comes to so sensitive and pliable a thing as the nature of a child,” he said, “the problem becomes vastly easier.”Burbank saw humanity as one vast garden. And he believed that what worked in the soil...could also work in the soul.More Than Just WooSo yeah—maybe it all sounds a little woo.Talking to plants. Believing they respond to love. But then again…He gave us over 800 new plant species. He shaped modern agriculture. He gave us the potato that fed the world—and powered fast food empires. And still, that wasn't what moved him most.He and Yogananda spent hours dreaming about the future—not just of plants, but of people. They traded thoughts about education, Eastern and Western wisdom, yoga, reincarnation, mysticism. They even brainstormed the name of a magazine together.(They landed on East–West, naturally.)And Burbank wasn't just philosophizing from the sidelines. He took initiation into Kriya Yoga from Yogananda—and practiced it with devotion.“Sometimes I feel very close to the Infinite Power,” he told Yogananda, quietly. The Human SeedWhat stirred him more than a better walnut tree or thornless cactus...was the human seed—the potential in a child. He believed, as Yogananda did, that a new kind of education was needed:One that honored nature.Cultivated inner growth.Treated kids like whole people—not just data buckets.“Schools like yours are the only hope of a future millennium,” he said. That Vision Didn't Die With ThemMy wife Chiara helped start a school for our children and others based on those very ideals. It's called Piccolo Seme (Little Seed — in English)—originally rooted in the teachings of Yogananda, and in the same soil Burbank believed in.When the world was shutting down in 2020, and everything felt uncertain, that school became a lifeline for us—and for many families hungry for something more grounded, more joyful, more… real. And now, years later, I find myself still talking to plants in the garden.Still wondering what they know.Still trying to pass that spark on to my 10-year-old son—who usually just rolls his eyes when I get too mystical about my basil. But maybe someday, he'll get it.Maybe one day he'll feel what Burbank felt. That love isn't just something we feel—It's something we grow. And it grows back. What If...?What if the wildest ideas… aren't actually that wild? What if communion with nature isn't mysticism…but science we just haven't caught up to yet? What if you could learn to listen—really listen—to the life growing silently all around you?Burbank didn't just change plants. He changed the relationship we could have with them. And maybe…that's the part we're still catching up on.Let's talk more soon.Ray “Love Grows when we Plant Seeds” Lee BaconMore chapters of the Electroculture Foundations Guide are coming soon

Send us a textOn a recent episode of a podcast, guest Amarillo Valle (pronounced Vi-yah) said, "We say, happiness is an inside job. Well, peace is an inside job, too!" His statement shook me. It woke me up from some deep slumber, a type of recurring dream where I kept putting others in charge of my experience, my joy, my happiness, my peace. Why did I give away my power? When did it happen? And how do I endeavor to take back the reins? I think Season Five of Curious Cat is that journey. Finding the bridge between what culture had said are two opposite forces, then harvesting the magic there. This week's exploration of the bridge is via music. A melody can move me to tears. Singing snaps me out of a funk. Humming makes my brain work better. Music is the way the dead reach out to me most often, maybe because it's the channel I'm open to receiving information on best.My first hint to the power of music was as a young mother. Once a week, I ventured out of the house to the local hospital and joined the moms class with my newborn. There were babies of many ages there, including some in the six to nine month range. I learned from the first class by observing, that age could get antsy, squirmy and the parent would stand up, hold the baby with two arms out front, and with the baby's back to them, the parent would rock forward and backward on their heels. That worked to calm the antsy babies. But if one baby began to cry, soon out of empathy, all the babies would join in. That's when we were instructed to sing, Twinkle, Twinkle, which the entire class did. And within seconds, all the babies quieted, eyes watching, calm. It was pure magic. Some of my most potent memories of my daughters as babies involved music, playing songs on a speaker or radio and dancing with them in my arms. I'm smiling ear to ear as I share this. Is there a song that makes you feel calm? Sad? Brings up a funny memory? Or annoys the heck out of you?Mine is Twelve Days of Christmas. If I'm preparing a meal for the family and that song comes on? Oh my gosh. It sends my anxiety through the roof. Music can help us fall asleep, a certain song can give us more energy than a cup of coffee,  enough to stay alert behind the wheel on a long drive, and impacts how we heal, recover, learn and rest. I've pulled the latest research from the internet and can't wait to share. Let's get into it.Show Sources & What to Watch/Listen/Read NEXTSound Heals, the movie, Thomas Durant (on Amazon for rental)The Healing Power of Sound as Meditation, Psychology TodayHave you tried the GoodPods app yet? “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.” This verse is not only on a  necklace but its meaning is woven throughout Charles Martin's heartwarming novel, When Crickets Cry. God crosses two paths, Reese, the former heart surgeon, who is hiding from his painful past and seven year old Annie who is selling lemonade and giving away sunshine and smiles. She has a failing heart and has been praying for a surgeon!Charlie is Reese's blind brother-in-law who lives next-door. The two rebuild old boats together. Both Charlie and Annie live life to the fullest! Charlie's favorite quote is from Helen Keller, “I am only one, but I am still one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something.”“People marvel at the genius of Mozart because he supposedly wrote “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” at the age of three and composed his first symphony at the age of twelve. And yes, of course, he was a genius, but another way to look at it is that he just discovered early what God had made him to do…Of course he was brilliant, but that's not the point. The point is he knew and then he got to work.” This wisdom came from Emma, Charlie's sister and Reese's late wife, who knew Reese was made to fix hearts.“If anything in the universe reflects the fingerprint of God, it is the human heart…It derives no benefit from the blood it pumps making it the most unselfish of organs…it is also the most courageous and faithful.” Can Reese get over the pain of the past? Will he be able to forgive himself? Will Annie get the surgery she desperately needs before her time runs out? Just like each piece of a puzzle is ‘critical to the whole', each person in this story reminds us that we all have a part to play in this life. Please join us as we take a trip to rural Georgia and learn about love, loss, and redemption!

Amin. (Dod).

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for December 1, 2024 is: scintilla • sin-TIL-uh • noun A scintilla is a very small amount of something. Scintilla is usually used in negative statements, as in “not even/nary a scintilla.” // There wasn't even a scintilla of evidence to support their story. See the entry > Examples: “… there was one part of his Irish childhood that would follow [Oscar] Wilde across the sea to England. A tiny part of his childhood, admittedly. The merest scintilla of his youth.” — Alexander Poots, The Strangers' House: Writing Northern Ireland, 2023 Did you know? Wonder what scintillas (or scintillae) are? It may help spark your memory to look up above the world so high at the tiny (to our eyes) stars twinkling like diamonds in the sky. Scintilla comes directly from Latin, where it refers to a spark—that is, a bright flash such as you might see from a burning ember (the noun scintilla is related to the verb scintillare, which means “to sparkle” and is responsible for the English verb scintillate meaning “to sparkle or gleam”). In the 17th century, English carried over this “glittering particle” sense, which is still in use today, as when Scottish writer Rudi Zygadlo wrote of the Gulf of Mexico “fizzing with scintillas underneath the rising sun.” In the same century, people also began using scintilla figuratively for a hint or trace of something that barely suggests its presence. Today this sense is much more common, and especially found in negative statements, such as “We have not a scintilla of doubt that you are now humming ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.'”

En: It was a cool day at the end of November, and Nyhavn sparkled with Christmas lights in the evening darkness.Da: Folk gik rundt i deres varme jakker, og duften af ristede kastanjer fyldte luften.En: People walked around in their warm jackets, and the scent of roasted chestnuts filled the air. En: Mikkel, Sofie, and Lars stood close together by the canal.Da: Mikkel var ivrig.En: Mikkel was eager.Da: Han ville tage det perfekte julebillede, som hans familie ville være misundelige på.En: He wanted to take the perfect Christmas photo that his family would be envious of.Da: "Kom nu, stå lidt tættere," sagde Mikkel og prøvede at få Sofie og Lars til at passe ind i rammen.En: "Come on, stand a little closer," said Mikkel, trying to fit Sofie and Lars into the frame. En: Just as Lars was about to press the camera button, a mime appeared in the background. En: He dramatically posed, making Sofie laugh.Da: "Ej, se nu!En: "Oh, look now! En: He's funny," said Sofie, pointing at the mime's exaggerated movements.Da: Mikkel sukkede og forsøgte at samle dem igen.En: Mikkel sighed and tried to gather them again.Da: "Vi prøver lige igen."En: "Let's try again."Da: Lars knipsede endnu et billede.En: Lars snapped another picture. En: But once again, the mime was there, now with a Santa hat on his head. En: Mikkel pulled at his hair and looked frustrated at his camera.Da: "Hvordan kan han blive ved med at finde os?"En: "How can he keep finding us?"Da: Sofie foreslog, "Hvad hvis vi prøver en anden vinkel?En: Sofie suggested, "What if we try a different angle?Da: Måske fra den anden side af kanalen?"En: Maybe from the other side of the canal?"Da: Lars nikkede og sagde, "Eller jeg kan prøve at fjerne ham senere med lidt redigering."En: Lars nodded and said, "Or I can try to remove him later with a bit of editing."Da: De flyttede sig ned ad kajen, men mime fulgte efter dem, som en skygge.En: They moved down the quay, but the mime followed them like a shadow.Da: Mikkel blev mere og mere irriteret.En: Mikkel became more and more irritated. En: He cheekily pushed the mime aside, but the mime just responded with a comically raised eyebrow and started a Christmas-like performance.Da: Lige dér, midt i Mikkels frustration, brød Lars og Sofie ud i ukontrollabel latter.En: Right there, in the midst of Mikkel's frustration, Lars and Sofie burst into uncontrollable laughter. En: The mime danced like a Santa who had lost his way. En: Eventually, Mikkel also gave up and laughed along. En: The festivities around them felt brighter, and the realization that perfection wasn't everything dawned on him as the best experience of the evening. En: When they finally took the picture, the mime was still there, in the foreground, with a big silly Santa hat.Da: Hans spirit gav billederne liv.En: His spirit brought the photos to life. En: Instead of being disappointed, Mikkel decided to use the unexpected photo as their Christmas card. En: "This is actually pretty funny," Mikkel admitted with a smile.Da: "Det er i hvert fald noget, ingen andre vil have."En: "It's definitely something no one else will have."Da: De gik videre, hånd i hånd, i aftenluften, varme af smilets glæde og latter.En: They continued on, hand in hand, in the evening air, warmed by the joy of smiles and laughter. En: The mime waved goodbye, with his hat in one hand and a big smile on his face. En: Nyhavn, with its twinkling lights and colorful houses, had given them a memory they would never forget. En: This Christmas, Mikkel's card would stand out, not for the perfect picture, but for the unexpected joy of life captured in a single frame. You've probably heard the political ads for people running for PSC in which they tout their conservative bona fides and then attack their opponents as tree-hugging hippies. Those ads don't really help us understand what goes on at the PSC, but they certainly get stuck in your head...""Always totin' Jeremy Oden"" comes to mind. Unfortunately, Alabamians often know very little about positions in our state government that impact them the most directly. The Public Service Commission (PSC) is certainly at the top of the list of those extremely important elected positions Alabamians need to know and understand. This week Bryan is joined by PSC President Twinkle Cavanaugh to hear her story and how she got into politics. Twinkle also gives us a rundown of what exactly it is that the Public Service Commission does. Naturally, the first question is always whether Twinkle is her real name. You'll be surprised by the answer and enjoy hearing how she got it. You'll also hear about all the other ways she has served in state politics and the roots of her passion. More to the point of this podcast, Bryan asks the tough questions surrounding the PSC's responsibility in regulating Alabama Power rates and what their role is in the coal ash cleanup. - Are our rates in Alabama really among the highest in the nation? - Why are our power bills so much higher than other states? - When was the last rate audit on Alabama Power? This informative podcast will give you a window into the role and powers of a very important office in our state government that affects your wallet daily.

Riley sits down for the second time with reserach scientist Twinkle Paryani from Abstrax Tech. Twinkle recently wrote a paper titled "Nonterpenoid Chemical Diversity of Cannabis Phenotypes Predicts Differentiated Aroma Characteristics" and can be found (open-access) at https://pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10.1021/acsomega.4c03225 This paper dives into the chemistry of smell, and when cannabis breeders are breeding for unique aroma, how they should be evaluating the final product. We often attribute the smell of cannabis to the terpene profile, but there is a lot more going on than just terpenes that give this plant it's unique complex aroma. Kate Kennedy on Capturing the Experience of Being a Millennial

We've actually already talked about today's book and author before on the show—back in January, when the book came out, we mentioned it on the show as it was my first #ReadwithMC book club pick. And now, how lucky are we today to have Kate Kennedy on I'd Rather Be Reading discussing her book One in a Millennial: On Friendships, Feelings, Fangirls, and Fitting In, which came out January 23. This book put into words everything I wish I could have said about being a millennial and perfectly nails down the millennial experience into 336 pages. Some of it is nostalgic and fun—stick around for our lightning round at the end of the episode—but some of it, quite frankly, isn't pretty. In this book and in this conversation Kate introduces us to the millennial paradox, what a lost millennial is, and so much more. In this book and in her work, Kate Kennedy has become the voice of a generation. She is a podcast host of the wildly popular show “Be There In Five,” a New York Times bestselling author—in addition to One in a Millennial, she also wrote a book about her love/hate relationship with social media called Twinkle, Twinkle, Social Media Star, and is a pop culture commentator. She also invented the “remindoormat” in 2014, which she created as a hobby after she decided to paint “turn off your curling iron” on her doormat in an attempt to not burn down her apartment. She then took it to a wider scale to much success, and called it Be There in Five (which later became the name of her podcast), which launched a line of reminder, affirmation, and custom doormats for people on the go. The doormats took off, and Kate left her corporate marketing job to run the business full-time. Kate is still writing her story—as are all millennials—and she's here to talk about her book with us today. I want to make a special dedication to my dear friend Mary, who loves Kate as much as I do and is a fellow millennial and just about the best friend, cheerleader, and hype woman a girl can have. I love you Mary, and I hope all of you love this episode.   One in a Millennial: On Friendships, Feelings, Fangirls, and Fitting In by Kate Kennedy
