Whitecaps voice Pete Schaad admits he’s starting to believe the MLS should go with a one-and-done playoff setting, as opposed to the two-game total goal series. Pete isn’t sure if playing for a draw was the right or wrong move by the Whitecaps, while also suggesting the Whitecaps need to see better efforts in the midfield, including from Brek Shea and Tony Tchani. Pete says injury issues on both sides make Seattle’s homefield advantage less of an advantage than it has been in the past.
After a weekend of high drama, Vancouver Whitecaps showed that they're still the daddy of the MLS Western Conference. As the 'Caps grabbed a dramatic stoppage time equaliser to salvage a point against Columbus Crew, Tony Tchani and Kekuta Manneh stole all the headlines. Our feature interview this week is with 'Caps coach Carl Robinson. We sit down with Robbo for an in-depth chat to explore his psyche, what makes him tick, how he builds and plays his teams, and the rest of the season ahead, plus is it actually better to have had Yordy Reyna injured and now flying when it matters? Plus we talk football with the legend that is actor Ray Winstone as we chat about Saturday's charity match at BC Place, West Ham, the Whitecaps, MLS, and more. All this and we preview next weekend's Colorado Rapids game, find out if Stefan Marinovic fancies a chocolate digestive, and The Cockney Rejects make their first appearance in our Wavelength section. Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? The Whitecaps have won again. And they're in third place just off the lead. Are they real deal? Can they sustain this good run of form to claim a first ever Western Conference title? They got a four game home stand off to a great start against Real Salt Lake. We look back at all the ins and outs, and highs and lows, from the 3-2 win and look ahead to the next two matches against Minnesota and Columbus. Our feature interview this week is with a man who knows Columbus very well, midfielder Tony Tchani, plus we're joined on the phone by Philly.com reporter Jonathan Tannenwald and AFTN writer Chris Corrigan to look at all things MLS and Whitecaps. Whitecaps coach Carl Robinson discusses the additions of midfielders Aly Ghazal and Aaron Maund, suggesting both bring key experience and depth while not costing much. Robbo isn’t surprised by the play of Tony Tchani, but admits many outsiders seem surprised by the impact Tchani has had.
Hear how it sounded as Tony Tchani gives the Whitecaps a 2-0 lead, right before the halftime whistle, over Minnesota
Has the doom and gloom been lifted in Whitecapsland? Well, just as one swallow doesn't make a summer, one victory doesn't mean Vancouver Whitecaps have turned their season around. But it's a promising sign. We look back on the 'Caps 4-2 win over LA Galaxy. The highs, the lows, and all the main talking points, blown calls, and questions the match posed. Have the 'Caps finally found their clinical finisher in Fredy Montero? Did the Kekuta Manneh trade finally give the rest of the squad the wake up call they needed? What does the addition of Tony Tchani mean to this team? And who was that in Mati Laba's shirt and what have you done with the real Mati? We'll hear from the LA losers too, from grumpy head coach Curt Onalfo, Jermaine Jones, and Ashley Cole, as LA were (mostly) brutally honest about their shortcomings. One player who never made it past half time was Erik Hurtado. We chat with the striker about his season so far and what it meant to him personally to lose his best friend in the team in Manneh. Our main player interview this week is with Residency alumni Sam Adekugbe, back in Vancouver rehabbing the injury he picked up while on loan with Brighton and Hove Albion. We chat with Sam about his time with English Championship side so far, his current injury, his frustrations, and what the future may hold in store for him. Will it be in Canada or England? And there's still time for I, Ludicrous to feature again in this week's Wavelength section and to look ahead to the CONCACAF Champions League semi-final at home to Tigres on Wednesday. Have a listen!
Hey now, here’s some news: a Trade! Mike Martignago joins Patrick Johnston to look at the exit of Kekuta Manneh. Tony Tchani is the return. What’s the deal? This is the Whitecaps Weekly on Province Sports Radio.
The MLS news machine never stops! After listening to the first-ever Hot-Take Hotline submission, the guys dive into Mike Petke's appointment as the fourth head coach in Real Salt Lake history, discuss the long-term implications of Oscar Pareja's contract extension in Dallas and then ponder how exactly the Chicago Fire might qualify for the World Cup. Confused? So was Bastian Schweinsteiger. There's plenty of weekend action to break down as well. You won't want to miss a marquee matchup between Seattle and Atlanta on a rare Friday night MLS doubleheader. After the break, those pesky transfer rumors around Cyle Larin just won't go away. Doyle gives his take on the young striker's future, then veteran defender Jonathan Spector calls in to give Larin his vote of confidence, explain why moving to MLS now made sense and what it's like to make the move to Manchester United at 17 years of age. Spector is also high on Christian Pulisic (duh) and says he'd love to get his national career going again under Bruce Arena. Speaking of, the US got a 1-1 draw on Tuesday in Panama City, and David takes Andrew to task for expecting more. Doyle also got taken to task ... on Twitter ... by Jermaine Jones ... and shares the full story and the opinion that annoyed the LA Galaxy man. In the mailbag, there's breaking news as the Whitecaps trade Kekuta Manneh to Columbus for Tony Tchani and an allocation money grab bag. What's going on with Vancouver? How does affect the Crew SC XI ... and could there be another trade in the works? Once that's out of the way, the guys listen to the inaugural crop of Hot-Take Hotline voicemails. You won't want to miss history being made! Want to be a part of the show? Call the Hot-Take Hotline at 401-206-0MLS to leave a voicemail (keep it short and sweet and avoid colorful language) that could appear on ExtraTime Radio!
MLS Cup is set! Columbus and Portland took care of business on the road, which means the Red Bulls and FC Dallas have to wait until next year while MAPFRE Stadium hosts the big game. Crew SC hero Kei Kamara finally gets his studio invite and gives the guys the lowdown on post-game celebrations, expectations for the final, his in-game lovefest with Tony Tchani and much more. Not to be forgotten, the Portland Timbers continued their torrid road form in 2015 to clinch their first MLS Western Conference championship. Matt, David and Andrew weigh in on how the Timbers got it done, and ask what lies ahead for RBNY and FC Dallas. In the mailbag, the MLS Best XI debate rages on, and fans ask whether this the best/most exciting MLS Cup Playoffs ever?
