City booooooys! The ubiquitous rally cry has connected a network of like-minded individuals, most of whom have the latest Drake and Jack Harlow albums at the top of their most listened to playlists. Those just happen to be two of Portland Timbers defender Justin Rasmussen's favorite artists, so when he returned the rally call it was really no surprise. The Las Vegas native is in his first professional season with the Portland Timbers, where he's seen time with both the first team and Timbers 2 in MLS Next Pro. He's shown plenty of promise as well, from scoring a banger of a goal in preseason to making a string of first team starts in May. Rasmussen joins the Washed-Up Crew to discuss how Las Vegas is a sneaky good soccer town (00:01:54), going the college route to getting drafted in MLS (00:03:56), differences between training in college vs. the pros (00:07:30), going to Bishop Gorman, a nationally recognized high school (00:09:14), the soccer-baseball team beef (00:15:00), getting adjusted to life in MLS (00:17:45), playing with Timbers 2 in MLS Next Pro and the biggest differences from MLS (00:27:17), the only time he's ever gotten a red card (00:38:24), his first MLS start vs. Austin FC (00:41:16), the vibe in Portland and what he gets up to outside the pitch (00:50:06), and his status as a hypebeast and how he got into sneakers (00:59:38), before taking on Julio's hot seat round (01:03:35). After witnessing a phenomenal, acrobatic, double save right in front of them, the Cauldron began chanting "That's Our Keeper!" 21-year-old John Pulskamp has been in goal far more than he expected this season, so he says hearing that level of support from the fans "is hard to describe exactly." Tim Melia has been out with a hamstring injury, and his contract is up this year. Pulskamp, however, signed an extension earlier this year through 2025 with an option for 2026. Therefore, Peter Vermes and Co. are getting a nice long look at the potential heir to the throne. The Cauldron let their feelings be known as Pulskamp shut down any hope the Portland Timbers had of making a comeback. The task at hand for the young is not lost on him. The competition is fierce, and only getting more challenging. Pulskamp explains the importance of looking inward and always working to find that next level. "There's a lot of guys on the roster. There's a lot of guys in the league," he says. "Those guys are constantly getting better, they're making themselves better." He's a California kid and thought he had an idea about what Kansas City might be like, but he's since grown to love it. And brings his family & friends in town to enjoy it as well. From the LA Galaxy academy, to trials overseas, he shares with us his path to landing at Sporting. Pulskamp reveals the best cities in US Soccer for getting heckled. He misses the feisty fans of the USL. We also learned why Tim Melia started calling him The Big Bear. It's hard to avoid with paws like that. Learn more about your ad choices. Co-Host of the Footy Prime Podcast Brendan Dunlop joined First Up to chat about TFC's impressive win against the Portland Timbers, commanding performance from Richie Lareya on Saturday night, Insigne's first goal at BMO Field and the chances of Toronto making the playoffs.
No shortage of storylines from the second weekend of the Premier League season! Brendan Dunlop, Craig Forrest and Jimmy Brennan start with Tottenham's stoppage time comeback at Stamford Bridge that saw managers Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel pulled off each other. They debate whether Chelsea v Tottenham is now the Prem's best rivalry, highlight where it went wrong for Chelsea in the second half and credit Harry Kane and Spurs for a comeback that made Kalidou Koulibaly's worldie feel like it was a week ago. Manchester United fans won't be able to forget Saturday's capitulation at Brentford soon enough. Producer Dan Wong was absolutely buzzing seeing his Bees pull off one of the most unexpected upsets in Premier League history. Things are so bad at Old Trafford that the club are reportedly exploring their options to terminate Cristiano Ronaldo's contract. Jimmy & Craig explain how difficult that actually is and why it would be a bad move for United. Nottingham Forest's first Premier League win at home over Forrest's West Ham has Jimmy over the moon, and the crew debate whether Arsenal can keep up this form to contend for a Top 4 spot come the end of the season. The massive money spent on Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi has paid off as Toronto FC pulled off a late win over Portland Timbers, on the same night CF Montreal survive the heat in Houston. And JC has invented a new character that's as bold and full of life as Ted Lasso. But not Ted Lasso, obviously. The Premier League has a new home in Canada this season: FuboTV. Toronto FC return to BMO Field for the first time since "that game against Charlotte" Saturday night to host MLS powerhouse, Portland Timbers. TFC insider Michael Singh, from The Parleh, gave James Sharman, Craig Forrest, Jimmy Brennan and Brendan Dunlop the inside scoop on all things TFC. From the Reds chances of making the MLS Cup Playoffs, to adjusting to life with Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi, to the future of Ayo Akinola and the form of Jesús Jiménez, and even to Bob Bradley's eventual successor as head coach, the crew get to it all. The prospect of Michael Bradley becoming a manager when his playing career is over led to a conversation about coaching badges and ideal situations to learn the trade. Then Sharms left us for his real job and the guys really had fun and relaxed, giving you another segment of "Teaching Wonger Soccer Things That You Already Know", and of course an installment of Footy Picks, ahead of the second Premier League weekend of the season.
