Before the club game pauses with the World Cup starting in less than a month, certain leagues are heating up over the next few weeks, as most European circuits wind down, while leagues like Major League Soccer are about to hit their halfway point. Speaking of MLS, however, this break could come at a great time for Canada's MLS sides, the Vancouver Whitecaps, Toronto FC and CF Montréal, who are dealing with injuries, dipping form and more. Can the Whitecaps enter the break still in first place in MLS? Will Toronto FC be able to stop a lengthy winless run? Can CF Montréal leap their Canadian Classique rivals after recovering from a slow start? They'll all look to make that happen this weekend. Meanwhile, Canadians continue to shine across the globe - Alex and Ben dive into those CanMNT and CanWNT players who are shining brightest at the moment in ‘Canadians Abroad'. Hosted on Acast. A massive opportunity lost at the Digs. Despite a lightning-fast goal from Joseph Paintsil just 47 seconds into the second half, the LA Galaxy couldn't hold on, settling for a 1-1 draw against the Vancouver Whitecaps. Special Edition: The Future of MLS Next Pro Jason is on the road to Pawtucket, Rhode Island for a live Morning Kick Around at Centreville Bank Stadium — so rather than leave you hanging, he's crossing the streams. This episode features the full Morning Kick Around interview with Eben Novy-Williams, deputy editor at Sportico, on KKR's blockbuster investment in MLS Next Pro through the newly formed Hometown Soccer Holdings. Jason and co-host Rob Kerr dig into what it all means for the soccer wars, lower-division soccer in America, MLS valuations, the Vancouver Whitecaps crisis, and what the World Cup might — or might not — do for the game's long-term trajectory. TIMESTAMPS: [0:00:28] — Welcome & road trip intro: Jason heads to Pawtucket for Morning Kick Around live at Centreville Bank Stadium, Rhode Island FC vs. Tampa Bay Rowdies, May 9th [0:01:02] — Check out Morning Kick Around on YouTube: youtube.com/@MorningKickAround [0:03:35] — Support the show at patreon.com/thebestsoccershow — World Cup content incoming for Besties, plus Wednesday office hours and the Bestie Slack [0:05:00] — Interview begins: Eben Novy-Williams, deputy editor at Sportico, joins Jason and Rob Kerr [0:05:46] — Why KKR? MLS launched Next Pro in 2022 with a minor league baseball vision — teams in non-MLS cities building a full pyramid. Four years in, most clubs treated it as a sunk cost, not a business. KKR changes that calculus. [0:07:12] — The moat strategy: MLS wants to control the entire pro soccer pyramid in the U.S. — and this deal widens the moat against USL considerably. [0:09:03] — KKR's timeline is likely five years. They want to build the commercial structure, prove the concept, grow the league, then find a successor. From MLS's side, this is Next Pro 2.0. [0:11:25] — The real estate angle: soccer stadium investment in mid-sized cities is as much about surrounding land development as the sport itself — just like minor league baseball. [0:19:33] — A quiet rule change: US Soccer dropped the required controlling ownership stake from 35% to 15%, opening the door to bigger consortiums and more institutional investment across all pro divisions. [0:22:18] — World Cup reality check: hotel bookings are flat, the ticketing process has been a mess, and once the tournament ends, MLS loses its biggest sales pitch. What does the league look like in the rearview mirror? [0:25:44] — Valuation tension: every MLS team is roughly in the top 50 most valuable soccer clubs globally. No pro/rel and a salary cap create cost certainty investors love — but fans see a ceiling on quality. [0:27:00] — The two-tier ownership problem: some owners paid under a million dollars for their clubs. New owners paid $500M. Those groups see the league's future very differently. [0:28:00] — Grant Gustafson and the Vancouver situation: Eben confirms the Gustafson family (Public Storage heirs, Kentucky thoroughbred farm) are the main Vegas-connected group in talks. Phoenix and Indianapolis also mentioned as relocation candidates. We're back with another AFTN Soccer Show packed full of Vancouver Whitecaps, Major League Soccer, and Canadian Premier League chat after an emotional, draining, and anger-inducing week in Whitecapsland. The feelgood factor from just a week ago went quickly missing in Vancouver as news broke, and continued to break as the week wore on, that a group had put a bid in for the Whitecaps with the aim of moving the team to Las Vegas. It was a fast-moving news cycle with both a lot and a little said by both sides and very few glimmers of hope for the 'Caps faithful it felt at times. So how did we get here? What do we know, what do we not, what's next, and how you can help? We delve into all of that, the main bullet points from the week, and hear from Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim. It may feel grim, but there is some light at the end of the long, dark tunnel. On the pitch, the Whitecaps dominated the LA Galaxy for much of their match on Saturday, but struggled to break down the home side's lines before recovering from a defensive mishap to salvage a vital road point. We pick over the main talking points coming out of that one and we round up the weekend action across MLS and the CPL. All of this plus we move onto the letter S in our Canadian Soccer A to Z series, music-wise, Mansun kick off their residency as our Artists of the Month, McCarthy are the latest band to feature in our 40th anniversary tribute year to the C86 movement, and we've got another new Scotland World Cup song in Wavelength. In this episode, the boys are astonished by Coach BJ Callaghan's ability to continue fielding competent soccer teams despite a hectic schedule that has the boys in gold flying all over North America every other day. Even though they dropped the first leg of their semifinal against Tigres and only mustered a draw on the road versus Philly, Nashville SC has a lot to be proud of and they STILL sit at the top of the Eastern Conference. Brian Schwake might just be the best goalkeeper in the MLS, and Maxwell Woledzi might just be a little TOO crazy (but we still love him). Who we don't love - the MLS owners who are contemplating allowing the move of the Vancouver Whitecaps to Las Vegas - #savethecaps. But the boys are excited about some free World Cup watch parties at Geodis Park this summer. They aren't too excited about Sam Surridge missing games with an undisclosed injury, though, and it's starting to make them concerned. But at least Miami's defense stinks and no other eastern conference team seems to have the total package that Nashville does. In the end, the boys look ahead and make some predictions for what might be the greatest test the team has ever faced this week in Monterrey. And they drink beer.

The Whitecaps wrapped up their last home game for three months with another win, as hundreds took part in a prematch #SaveTheCaps march. We pick over the bones of the game and look ahead to the grueling eight-game away swing the 'Caps now face before they return back home in three months time and how Jesper Sorensen might approach these games in term of squad rotation. The latter is helped by the return of Ranko Veselinovic and we chat with the Serbian centre back after he play his first game in over nine months with WFC2. We talk a lot more about the #SaveTheCaps campaign in this week's show as well, as more concerning murmurs come out around a relocation of the team to Las Vegas, and Whitecaps Brian White and Tristan Blackmon share their perspective of what it's like being a player on the team with all of this chatter around. In this episode, we break down the biggest threats standing between the Seattle Sounders and a 2026 Supporters' Shield run. Who should we be most worried about, and can Seattle stay in the mix? We also dive into a key lineup question ahead of this Saturday's matchup vs. FC Dallas: Could Jesús Ferreira slot into the No. 10 role if Albert Rusnák is sidelined with injury? What would that mean for the attack? Then, we dive into our discussion about the oligarch class continuing to price gouge every possible facet of the World Cup, including concerns over rising ticket prices and lack of transportation support and outlandish costs for fans.In this week's Agenda Check, Ari shares some trade regret regarding Georgi Minoungou. We had another frustrating VAR controversy in MLS – what needs to change? Does Stuart Hawkins deserves a bigger role moving forward? We close it out by talking about the “Save the Caps” movement and how supporters can push back against the potential oligarch relocation of the Vancouver Whitecaps.Follow Lobbing Scorchers: YouTube Instagram Bluesky TikTok Facebook Ari Liljenwall Noah Riffe Niko MorenoSPONSORS☕️ Lobbing Scorchers Kickoff is presented by QED Coffee a Seattle based roaster, coffee shop and coffee subscription service. The future of the Vancouver Whitecaps is suddenly in question, and fans are not taking it quietly. With stadium complications threatening the club's long-term place in the city, the Cooligans break down what's really happening behind the scenes and whether Vancouver can realistically keep its team. This isn't just about one club—it's about what MLS values most when push comes to shove: markets, money, or supporters. Then, Clint Dempsey joins the show for a wide-ranging conversation about the upcoming World Cup and the growing concern that real fans are being priced out of the biggest tournament in the world. He opens up about his Gatorade campaign, the mentality that made him one of the toughest players in U.S. soccer history, and the personal moment when he realized it was time to walk away from the game. Finally, the guys react to Chelsea FC parting ways with Liam Rosenior and why the constant churn of managers says more about ownership than anything happening on the pitch. Plus, they hit the biggest stories around the global game—from Manchester City leading the Premier League race to Lamine Yamal's injury and Pellegrino Matarazzo's surprising Copa del Rey success. For the Glory KC is back with the 176th episode of the show!Sporting Kansas City had what was potentially the lowest moment on the field in club history. At the very least, in recent memory. So, a week after talking about expectations, Sheena and I are trying to align on the state of the team. Fans are rightfully upset with the performances of the week, particularly the showing in the US Open Cup against the Colorado Springs Switchbacks.Fans are calling for Raphel Wicky's job, David Lee's job, Peter Mallouk to (already) sell the team, and for the release or purge of almost every player on the roster. What is rational and what is irrational? We try to break it all down.Plus, we weave through the moments in the USOC game as well as the loss to the Vancouver Whitecaps on Friday night. We knew this season would start slow and have some lows, but I'm not sure anyone thought it would be quite this low. We also talk about quite the remarkable stat when it comes to losing and SKC in recent seasons and where it sits in history. Outside of the events on the field, there were also a couple notable moments off the field. Cavan Sullivan was apparently inquired about by Lee and Alan Pulido is out at Chivas. The KC Current lifted up the week with their Teal Rising Cup win last weekend over Palmeiras, but that feels like an eternity ago. We briefly relive that game, and I talk about Haley Hopkins ascent up the roster and perhaps into the starting lineup in an NWSL game.In the Digital Crawl, we hit on a few more topics, including:World Cup Fan Fest Lineup, Parking and BusesUSWNT resultsNWSL calendar flip -- Fall to Spring?Javier Mascherano out in MiamiHere is a rundown of sections and start times:Intro & World Cup Trophy - 0:00Sporting KC - 6:30KC Current - 1:08:08Digital Crawl - 1:14:04Upcoming GamesKC Current @ Washington Spirit, FRI, April 24th at 7:00PM CSTSporting KC @ Chicago Fire, SAT, April 25th at 7:30PMSKC II vs. Houston Dynamo 2, SUN, April 26th at 7:00PMAs a special gift to For the Glory KC listeners and KC Soccer Journal readers, Backheeled.com is giving away 30 days of their amazing, independent American soccer coverage for free. Vancouver Defeat and Open Cup Success NYCFC were eager to get back on the field again after losing a difficult match to defending Western Conference Champions, The Vancouver Whitecaps, away on Saturday. Luckily the next match was a redemption game in US Open Cup as NYCFC would travel to West Chester to face USL League One side, West Chester FC. This week Mike Anderer, Mike Allen and J.R. diBart focus on the positives and the good gets better with a 5-2 victory for the boys from the Bronx.
