For close to two decades, Robert Earnshaw was the fleet-footed striker with an eye for goal who delighted fans with his instinctive finishing and acrobatic celebrations. Earning 59 caps for Wales along the way, Rob had a far reaching and fulfilling career, with spells at clubs including Norwich City, Nottingham Forest, Toronto FC and Cardiff City, where he came through the ranks from youth level. Pub quiz fans might know that Rob is the only footballer to have scored a hat-trick in the Premier League, all three football league levels, the FA Cup, the League Cup and at international level. After retiring as a player in 2016, the Zambia-born forward, tried a spell in coaching before opting for a career in broadcasting. I caught up with Rob to talk about the decisions he made after hanging up his boots and what it takes to shape a career in broadcasting today. Passionate about the game and knowledgable, Rob also shared his perspective on a host of issues, from racism directed at players, to the best way for footballers to approach social media, to sharing his view on why Gareth Bale did not receive the adoration of Real Madrid fans. For Wales supporters, Earnshaw offers reasons to be optimistic, ahead of the UEFA Euro 2024 play-offs.

The ups and downs of Vancouver Whitecaps' season have been on full display over the past two games. In true Forrest Gump style, you simply do not know what you're going to get from them, apart from perhaps not that much satisfaction in their performance. Vancouver Whitecaps are moving on up. Are they set to hit a purple patch of the season? Seven points from three tough matches bodes well, but can they find the consistency they are needing to take them down the stretch and finish in one of the top two places in the West. We look back at he home draw against Seattle and the win on the road in Orlando. The 'Caps gave up a lot of shots and a lot of possession but still came away with four points from the six on the table, moving them up fourth in the standings. What went right? What's a cause for concern? And what players stood out for good and bad reasons? We look at all that and more, plus we're joined by Radio Cascadia's Stephen Agen to look at the teams in the Western Conference right now and how things might shake out in the mix. And Half Man Half Biscuit return for our Wavelength section, we talk ice cream with Gordon Forrest, and find out if Robert Earnshaw fancies a Chocolate Digestive. Marc Weber joins Patrick Johnston to look at the first week of Whitecaps training camp and Robert Earnshaw's retirement-slash-move into coaching.
Vancouver Whitecaps hit the training pitch for the first time in 2016 and AFTN was there to bring you all the action! Well, all the audio. As players new and old try and make a lasting impression on 'Caps coach Carl Robinson, he'll just be hoping that one or more of his strikers can put the ball in the back of the net on a more consistent basis. We chat with two of those strikers, both of whom have been linked with moves away to pastures new this offseason, Jamaican international Darren Mattocks and Erik Hurtado. Mattocks talks about those transfer rumours, finding his international form at club level and his new found maturity and perspective as a soon to be father, while Hurtado tells us about his loan period in Norway and trying to come back and crack the 'Caps gameday squad. If both players hang around, they'll have a new striker's coach, with former Welsh international Robert Earnshaw announcing his retirement to take that position along with becoming head coach of the U14 Residency team. We chat with Earnie about his decision to retire, his coaching path, the challenges ahead, what he hopes to bring to the U14 team and a lot more. And there's still time to hear from Christian Dean about trying to unseat the centre back pairing of Waston and Parker and making an impression of his own, along with some of the big stories from the first week of preseason camp. Have a listen!
The regular season is finally over and Vancouver Whitecaps have finished second in the West and third overall in MLS. Not bad, but all the focus is now on what they can do in the playoffs. We're joined by Harjeet Johal to look back on the 'Caps 3-0 win over Houston and what we can take from it going forward in terms of form, momentum and injuries. We hear from both coaches, Vancouver's Carl Robinson and Houston's Owen Coyle, with the latter making a bold guarantee to AFTN listeners. We also catch up with goalscorer Robert Earnshaw to talk about his super quick goal after coming on as sub, his season in Vancouver so far, how he feels the 'Caps will fare in the postseason and his overall thoughts on the playoffs. Then we head into the Houston locker room to get some very honest end of season thoughts from Giles Barnes and possible Vancouver target, Will Bruin. And there's still time to look ahead to the MLS playoffs. Who will get through the first round? Who with the Whitecaps face? And who will win the whole shebang? Have a listen!
It's been a while, but we're back! Refreshed and rested after a little break, the AFTN Soccer Podcast is ready and raring to go for what will be an incredibly busy month of August for Vancouver Whitecaps. 'Caps coach Carl Robinson talks about the packed month ahead. How will he prioritise the three competitions Vancouver find themselves in? How much squad rotation will there be? What's the chances of additions to the squad? And how does he approach playing Seattle Sounders twice in the space of five days? However he does it, it'll be double the fun. We’re also joined by Harjeet Johal to talk all things Whitecaps and we hear from Russell Teibert about playing in his second MLS Homegrown game during All-Star Week under coach Landon Donovan and Mauro Rosales looks back on his first goal as a Whitecap and his latest injury. And there's still time for Robert Earnshaw to talk about his career and his Whitecaps "Teammates". Have a listen!
It's been a busy few days in Whitecapsland as the various incarnations of Vancouver Whitecaps played four games over two days and came away with just one win, two draws and a loss. The defeat came in MLS action on Saturday night where referee Dave Gantar gave the impression that he wanted to be the centre of attention. Whether he did or not, he became it anyway. We look back at just what went wrong in the Caps' 2-1 loss to DC and get the thoughts of both coaches, Vancouver's Carl Robinson and DC's Ben Olsen, along with Whitecaps captain Pedro Morales and goalkeeping rock David Ousted. We also have some exclusive chats from the victorious DC United locker room as we hear from debutant sub keeper Travis Worra, matchwinner Chris Rolfe and Perry Kitchen, and we talk with Kofi Opare about the game and the chances of him suiting up for the Canadian national team. Turning our attention to USL action, we take a brief look at WFC2's 1-1 draw with Seattle Sounders 2 on Sunday and hear from coach Alan Koch, goalscorer Robert Earnshaw and captain Tim Parker. And there's still time to have an extended one on one chat with S2 head coach Ezra Hendrickson about the game, his team's season so far and just how Seattle are looking to use their USL side.
There's been nothing but key goals so far for the Whitecaps, be they from Octavio Rivero or from Robert Earnshaw. Or Nico Mezquida. But they've not played all that great. Their coach says that. Thoughts on all this, and the Galaxy, from Patrick Johnston and Marc Weber.
Another Saturday, another late, late winning goal for Vancouver Whitecaps. It's all getting so wonderfully predictable! Portland Timbers became the latest team to be on the end of a Whitecaps smash and grab thanks to Robert Earnshaw's 90th minute winner. Nice to do that in any game but when it's in a Cascadian derby against one of your fiercest rivals, then it's even sweeter. So as you can imagine, we're pretty cock-a-hoop here at AFTN Towers as we bring you our double whammy of our Portland postgame show and a quick USL WFC2 preview podcast. We pick over the bones of the game and hear from both Vancouver coach Carl Robinson and Portland head honcho Caleb Porter, with their thoughts on how the match played out, the goals and the key players. And talking of those, we also hear from Whitecaps match winner Robert Earnshaw and the man of the match, goalkeeper David Ousted. We also hear from the Portland locker room, with the thoughts of Timbers DP Liam Ridgewell, goalscorer Fanendo Adi and defender Nat Borchers. And there's still time for a quick look at WFC2 kicking off their USL season against Seattle on Sunday, as we chat with head coach Alan Koch and captain Tyler Rosenlund. Have a listen!
In George Orwell's "Nineteen Eighty-Four" Room 101 was a torture chamber filled with prisoners' fears and worst nightmares. You could imagine that a one-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater that came out of the sky might be one of the inhabitants in there. Yet, ironically, for episode 101 of "There's Still Time", the AFTN Soccer Podcast, we're hoping that the Whitecaps become such purple people monsters, devouring Orlando City in MLS action on Saturday. Fresh from their first win, and clean sheet, of the new MLS season, Vancouver head into Florida for the first time on MLS duty to face the Eastern Conference leaders. We look back on last weekend's win over Chicago and ahead to the Orlando clash. One of the standouts from the Chicago win, was Residency alumni Sam Adekugbe and we have a chat with the homegrown star about the match, the threat posed by Orlando, his battle with Jordan Harvey for the starters spot and what he's learned from the veteran defender. Setting up the Orlando match for us is another young Canadian, the number one pick in this year's MLS SuperDraft, Orlando City striker Cyle Larin. Larin chats with us about that draft day experience, his time in Orlando so far, the challenges from moving up to the pros from the college game, this weekend's match-up with Vancouver and the Canadian national team's World Cup hopes. We also hear from both coaches, Carl Robinson and Adrian Heath with their thoughts about the match and Robbo talks Robert Earnshaw, squad tinkering and the form of Pedro Morales. All that and there's still time for Carl Robinson's Big Question. Have a listen!
Vancouver Whitecaps are still camping hard in the hope that the 2015 MLS season will actually get underway on time. It's a buoyant 'Caps camp, but then again, when is it not? Coming off a 6-0 friendly win on Sunday helps of course. We look back at the UVIC Vikes match-up and ask if there was really much than you can take from such a hammering? One of the standout players on Sunday though was young Canadian internationalist Marco Bustos. We speak one-on-one with Bustos about his first camp as a MLS pro, how he's progressing and his hopes for the season. A player who is hoping to build upon a great MLS season last year is Whitecaps goalkeeper David Ousted. The great Dane led the league with 13 clean sheets. Can we expect more of the same or even better? And how will the chemistry be with a new central defensive pairing in front of him? Ousted chats about all this and more. From those with contracts, to one hoping to earn one. We ran our written interview with Welsh striker Robert Earnshaw last week, but if you missed it or if you want more, here's our full exclusive chat with the goalscorer that may be the answer to the Whitecaps search for a veteran forward. And there's still time to feature a quick roundtable chat around the Collective Bargaining Agreement that could mean a MLS players' strike. Will it come to this? We hope not, but the players have our full support. Have a listen!
Not that is was in the first place, but it has become a broken record and painful each week to discuss a late goal that sinks TFC. A 1-0 defeat off of a Logan Emory mistake leaves the Reds with nothing but heartache as they did enough to come away with the very least one point. Aside from this, there are still talking points, mostly the premier of Matias Laba and the cooling off of Robert Earnshaw. With San Jose mid-week, Toronto will likely be looking ahead to a 10-day break in order to sort out this poor run over the last two weeks.
Roche talks to Toronto FC and Welsh international forward Robert Earnshaw talks about joining Major League Soccer and his life in T-Dot. In the second segment, senior writer for Sports Illustrated, Grant Wahl joins the show to discuss the current MLS season.
How's that for glass half full? The Reds might have quite been able to break the late conceded goal curse, but there are positives to draw on in a 2-2 tie with the LA Galaxy. The return of Luis Silva brought an immediate impact, and Robert Earnshaw continues his scoring streak. Defending still is a concern as there is a question mark over who can cover the flanks as both goals came down the right side. Looking ahead, Toronto will need to tighten the reigns if they are to keep moving upwards when FC Dallas and Kenny Cooper come to town next weekend.
Toronto FC shock all as they down MLS Cup favourites Sporting Kansas City 2-1 in their home opener. A Robert Earnshaw brace proved last week was no fluke as his early energy this time resulted in a goal and he followed it up with a penalty conversion. The defence held their own through the second half onslaught to put TFC a step ahead of 2012 and give supporters some more optimism in these early weeks of their transition into Season Seven.
