Welcome back to another episode of the Third Sub Podcast! In this episode, Alex and Sam are back, as usual, this time to chat all things Vancouver Whitecaps after a big weekend for the team.  To begin, they start with the biggest highlight from the weekend - a 5-0 win over rivals CF Montréal, one where they were able to take advantage of an early Montréal red card to put up their first win of the season.  Led by a pair of former WFC II standouts, Simon Becher and Ali Ahmed, it was a much-needed confidence booster for Vancouver, who had been playing well in MLS play, but just didn't have the results to show for it.  After, they look at what's next for the 'Caps, as they get set to host LAFC in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League quarter-finals. A familiar foe, they look at what to expect from this LA side, who are arguably the favourites among the last eight in this competition, and for good reason.  At the same time, they're not invincible, so Alex and Sam look at how Vancouver could beat them, and what they'll need to do in order to make that happen.  Lastly, they finish off with a bit of CPL news, as they react to the signing of Kekuta Manneh by Pacific FC, a move that certainly caught many Canadian soccer fans by surprise when it dropped on Monday morning.  Make sure to check out The Third Sub Podcast on Twitter, @thirdsubpod, as well as on Instagram, @thethirdsub.

Are you watching the games or just looking at the stats? David's catchphrase is taking off! The guys are definitely talking about (and watching) the games, starting with Friday night lights in Toronto where the best player in the league – Alberth Elis, duh ;) – is hoping to put on a show against the upstart Dynamo. Yes, that'd be Sebastian Giovinco, who Atlanta United captain Michael Parkhurst gives the nod as MLS's best. Who else does Parkhurst hating matching up against? What's life like with an expansion team firing on all cylinders on and off the field? Just how cushy is that new training complex? You won't want to miss this all-encompassing interview from ATL. There are plenty more juicy MLS storylines to talk about, too. The guys start with Dax McCarty's return to Red Bull Arena, celebrate Mauro Diaz's cameo on the training field and Portland's proposed stadium expansion, wonder what's up in Columbus as Gregg Berhalter and Kekuta Manneh go back and forth in the media and finally call the LA Times Kevin Baxter to diagnose what ails the Galaxy. As always, the Hot-Take Hotline is chock full of gems, starting with a jingle from none other than Alexi Lalas. Another week, another Cascadian derby, another Fredy Montero goal. Only trouble was this week it ended in a 2-1 defeat. We dissect Vancouver Whitecaps' loss against the Portland Timbers. Was it the cliched game of two halves that it felt? Where did it all go wrong, who stood out, who was targeted, and should the 'Caps have taken something from it? We get the thoughts from 'Caps coach Carl Robinson and striker Fredy Montero after the match, about the game and where they go from here with three more tough away games coming up fast. We also chat with Christian Bolanos, who had a poor first half display but was likely the best player on the pitch for the Whitecaps in the second half. Has the doom and gloom been lifted in Whitecapsland? Well, just as one swallow doesn't make a summer, one victory doesn't mean Vancouver Whitecaps have turned their season around. Have the 'Caps finally found their clinical finisher in Fredy Montero? Did the Kekuta Manneh trade finally give the rest of the squad the wake up call they needed? What does the addition of Tony Tchani mean to this team? And who was that in Mati Laba's shirt and what have you done with the real Mati? We'll hear from the LA losers too, from grumpy head coach Curt Onalfo, Jermaine Jones, and Ashley Cole, as LA were (mostly) brutally honest about their shortcomings. One player who never made it past half time was Erik Hurtado. We chat with the striker about his season so far and what it meant to him personally to lose his best friend in the team in Manneh. Spector is also high on Christian Pulisic (duh) and says he'd love to get his national career going again under Bruce Arena. Speaking of, the US got a 1-1 draw on Tuesday in Panama City, and David takes Andrew to task for expecting more. Doyle also got taken to task ... on Twitter ... by Jermaine Jones ... and shares the full story and the opinion that annoyed the LA Galaxy man. In the mailbag, there's breaking news as the Whitecaps trade Kekuta Manneh to Columbus for Tony Tchani and an allocation money grab bag. What's going on with Vancouver? How does affect the Crew SC XI ... and could there be another trade in the works? Once that's out of the way, the guys listen to the inaugural crop of Hot-Take Hotline voicemails. Four days, two matches, two different competitions, two defeats. That's been Vancouver Whitecaps' week, but the performances and circumstances of the games against San Jose Earthquakes and Tigres in the 'Volcano' were very different natural disasters. The 'Caps battled hard against a much better Tigres side in Mexico on Tuesday night, coming away with just a two goal deficit and are still very much in their CONCACAF Champions League semi-final. We look back at the game, the performances, and the strange feeling of coming away from a game that we expected the team to do much worse in but being disappointed with how things ultimately played out. 'Caps coach Carl Robinson gave us a call just before he headed home from Mexico to chat about the game and what may lie in store in the second leg (00:16:23 mark). There were some good defensive displays in Mexico, especially from Kendall Waston and David Ousted. But where was that in San Jose? Can they produce that every week in MLS? San Jose was a mess. We look at the great start, the turning point of Ousted's sending off, and the subsequent defensive collapse, posing the question what future does Kekuta Manneh have with this team if he can't add a better defensive side to his game and what could the 'Caps get for him if they decided to put him up for a trade? Our player interview this week is with one of the Whitecaps most recent additions, Brek Shea (00:49:48). We sit down with Brek to talk about his career, moving to Vancouver, and life off the pitch. We found it an interesting chat and we're sure you will too. And there's still time to bring you Tim Parker's footballing bucket list (01:16:17). Have a listen.

The 2017 season is already in full swing for Vancouver Whitecaps. While most teams played their first competitive match in this weekend’s MLS openers, the ‘Caps now have three under their belt, with two in the space of four days thanks to their CONCACAF Champions League heroics. We look back at what we learned and what we can realistically take from the 2-0 win over New York Red Bulls in the CCL and the 0-0 draw with Philadelphia Union in MLS. Has the defence finally shored up? Is the two man defensive shield killing attacking play? What’s the best position for Kekuta Manneh and Erik Hurtado? And what are we likely to see from the team in the weeks to come? We talk about all this and more in our first postgame show of the season. We also chat with the newest member of the Whitecaps, but a well known returning face, Mauro Rosales. What tempted the veteran Argentine back to Vancouver? Is coaching in his long term plans? What’s his thoughts on the team this season and especially Alphonso Davies? Plus B.A. Robertson features in this week’s ‘Wavelength’ feature. This is a podcast of our first live show on CiTR radio (and our fifth on the station altogether). As such it’s a little chaotic at times as we worked out which buttons to push!! We also ran out of time to put more in, but it’ll get a lot smoother, so have a listen, enjoy, and ‘Mon the ‘Caps. What a week that was to be a Vancouver Whitecaps player or supporter. Well, technically it was eight days, but who's counting. Three MLS matches played. Three victories. A nine point haul that shot them up the standings. All fantastic stuff, but it would have been nice if they didn't make it so nerve wracking for those watching! A come from behind victory against Portland was followed by a last ditch win against Chicago and finished off with a rollercoaster of emotions of a match away to Toronto. We look back at the last two matches and ahead to this weekend's latest Cascadia Cup encounter with the Timbers. What stood out, both good and bad, in the wins? hat transformation has taken place with Erik Hurtado? How good was Kekuta Manneh and where's that consistency week in, week out? We also look at Masato Kudo's horror injury and hear from Chicago Fire player Razvan Cocis about what it was like on the pitch when it happened and his own important reaction. All this and a lot more, including some WFC2 chat 'Caps head coach Carl Robinson talks about the form of striker Kyle Greig and the opportunity the upcoming Canadian Championship and Champions League matches will afford these players. We discuss the Kekuta Manneh incident that led to his suspension and fine this week from Major League Soccer's Disciplinary Committee, look ahead to the Montreal Impact match this Saturday and chat a bit about the addition of Minnesota United FC to MLS in 2018. The 1-0 loss to Vancouver in the 96th stinking minute was pretty terribawful, but there were still some positives to take from it and it's easy to lose sight that this is a young team and one that hasn't been together very long. We hear some post game thoughts of Martin Rennie, Kekuta Manneh and Nigel Reo-Coker on the performance, the win and the team's playoff hopes and the three of them also chat with us, along with David Ousted, on whether the upcoming ten day break between matches will benefit or hinder the Caps. And there's still time to look ahead to Colorado and try and break down what could play out in an exciting run in with four teams jostling for two MLS playoff spots.

Episode 15 of "There's Still Time", the AFTN podcast, and it's another one of our post game pods but with a little bit more this time around. Vancouver Whitecaps remained unbeaten at home with a 3-1 win over Chicago Fire. We chat about the game and the impact of Kekuta Manneh, along with audio from the Gambian and Martin Rennie. We also chat about Camilo and discuss those murmurs about him playing for the Canadian national team. And talking of the national team, we have look back at the Gold Cup. Was it worth bringing such a young squad and what did they learn? We also hear from interim head coach Colin Miller, who spoke to us after the Mexico defeat about the leap from the levels these guys have been playing to the international stage and what he thinks of some of the Canadian media criticism. One young guy who hopes to feature in the Canadian set up down the line is Whitecaps' Residency prospect Sam Adekugbe. Sam has been turning a lot of heads this past year and the general feeling is that he will be on the Caps' MLS squad sooner rather than later. We caught up with Sam before he headed down to Houston for the U18s Finals week and spoke with him about his development, his hopes for the future, the USSDA Finals and his Canadian passport situation. All this and there's still time to also chat with Vancouver Whitecaps Residency head coach Gordon Forrest about the tough test that the U18s will face this week at the Academy Finals. This episode was recorded at BC Place right after the Chicago game, so enjoy all the background noise from the air conditioning and slamming doors!
