Chris Armas is a 2025 inductee into the US Soccer Hall of Fame. During his playing career, he played 12 seasons in Major League Soccer for the LA Galaxy and Chicago Fire, and was a 5x MLS Best XI selection, an MLS and US Open Cup Champion, and played 66 games for the US National Team. The 2000 US Soccer Player of the Year and 2005 MLS Comeback Player of the Year, untimely injuries derailed his inclusion in the 2002 and 2006 US World Cup teams. After retireing from playing, Chris began a coaching career that has taken him to assistant coach roles at Manchester United and Leeds United, as well as MLS Head Coaching stops with the NY Red Bulls (2018 Supporters Shield winners), Toronto FC, and in 2024-2025 the Colorado Rapids. In 2024, he led the Rapids to a remarkable improvement of 23 points, finishing 7th after finishing dead last in 2023. For this he was named an MLSCoach of the Year finalist. In 2025, the Rapids missed out on the playoffs on the final day, and Armas and the Rapids agreed to part ways. In our conversation today, Chris and John discuss the importance of building strong relationships with athletes, establishing trust, and helping each player get better. We discuss his time in England, meeting Sir Alex Ferguson, the British press, and his time in Colorado including the the joys of 2024 and the heartbreak of missing out on the 2025 players due to a stoppage time goal. You will see that Chris is humble, authentic, and driven to keep coaching and learning, and its a wonderful conversation to understand the humanity needed to coach at the top level. Hello Colorado Rapids fans. Well so much for taking a few weeks off. Chris Armas will not return as head coach. Pádraig Smith and Kevin Demoff had a press conference. It was informative but also it wasn't. Holding The High Line banters about the USL Championship and MLS NEXT Pro playoffs. Colorado Springs Switchbacks have a tough road game at FC Tulsa to start the playoffs. Colorado Rapids 2 are hosting MNUFC2 on Sunday in the Western Conference Final. Then we react to Armas Out. We give our thoughts on the press conference. It was a big deal that someone from KSE was there to speak. It also felt like Groundhog Day. Many Rapids fans will be underwhelmed. We try to make sense of it all. The guys end the show with a draft of our realistic and ideal coaching candidates. Vincente Sánchez anybody? Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. La temporada regular de la MLS 2025 llega a su fin para LAFC, que cierra con 60 puntos y asegura el tercer lugar en la Conferencia del Oeste tras empatar 2-2 ante Colorado Rapids en el último partido. Hello Colorado Rapids fans. The 2025 Colorado Rapids season is over. A lot happened after the full-time whistle. Holding The High Line sits down for a looooong chat to discuss the Chris Armas apology and do a season review. The guys break down the 2-2 draw against Los Angeles FC and why it was a microcosm of their season and their matchup against LAFC. We discuss how Colorado came so close to winning and so close to making the playoffs. Then Matt talks about the post game press conference with Chris Armas. Spoiler alert, he and I are good. But this is a good 'Inside Baseball' conversation about MLS media relations and how journalists do their work covering a local beat. Rabbi and Red then review the season, Lord of the Rings trilogy style. We talk about Chris Armas' future with the club and why the timing of this extension or decision to let him walk is so interesting. We discuss roster options for 2026 and what other players could depart. We look ahead to positional targets for the 2026 January Transfer Window. Then we give you all the information on the offseason. Spoiler alert, it's going to be a couple weeks. Here's some links to stuff we talked about during the episode: When Playing It Out Of The Back Goes Wrong (@WPIOOTBGW), Mark's open letter to Chris, and Matt's thread discussing it. Episode 3 of Season 6 begins with the Living Leadership Interview segment. This week I had the joy to discuss leadership philosophy, the skills great leaders utilize, and the importance of lifelong learning with Trinity alumnus Kyle Porter. Kyle is the Director of Player Performance with the Colorado Rapids who play in the Major League Soccer (MLS) Western Division. Before joining the Rapids in 2022, he worked as the Assistant Director of Sports Performance at Grand Canyon State University, the Director of Soccer Performance at FC Arizona, and owned and operated Porter Athletic Performance in which he worked with over six soccer academies and clubs. While at Trinity, Kyle was a two-year captain (2011 & 2012), won four Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Championships, and advanced to the NCAA Division III National Tournament four times with three Sweet Sixteen appearances, and one Elite Eight appearance in 2008. He details how his Trinity experience as a Finance and Marketing major shaped his professional trajectory and the importance of his men's soccer teammates and Coach Paul McGinlay in helping him develop his leadership philosophy and approach to relationship building. During our conversation, Kyle spoke in great detail about why great leaders look first to develop relationships, paraphrasing the Teddy Roosevelt quote, "Nobody cares how much you know, until they know how much you care." We also discussed individual and organizational trust, the importance of staying in observation mode as long as you can, and that great leaders practice empathy and compassion. Kyle also highlights the value of genuine curiosity, that the "only guarantee is that there are no guarantees," and how collaboration can lead to a positive team culture. The episode concludes with my lecture on chapter 3 of the 10th edition of Peter G. Northouse's "Leadership: Theory and Practice." During the segment, I highlight the evolution of skills-based approaches to studying leadership and detail Mumford et al.'s Skills Model of Leadership. Send me your thoughts and let's keep the conversation going on Twitter / X (@TingleJK) or on LinkedIn.

Hello Colorado Soccer Fans. This week on Holding The High Line, the Colorado Rapids won against Houston Dynamo on a stoppage time own goal! We discuss an FC Dallas six pointer and more. The guys open with some heavy topics, discussing the gun violence from last week. Also Real Salt Lake kicked a spectator out for wearing a MAGA hat, then apologized to him publicly, and invited him back. This despite wearing political campaign material being against MLS stadium policy. RSL Twitter thinks they found the guy. He's said some bad words and suggested the club send all their foreign players back to where they came from. The we lighten things up, discussing the 2-1 win over Houston Dynamo. The home debuts from Paxten Aaronson, Rob Holding, Rafael Santos, and Alexis Manyoma were good. Cole Bassett scored on a set piece. The winner was a bit of a lucky bounce but it was a much better performance. We discuss some recent press releases from Denver Summit FC. Spoiler, they've got more season ticket holders than the Rapids have ever had, probably. Then we preview FC Dallas. Another mid team with one really good attacker. They've got Lalas Abubakar though. Oh, and Matt talks about his ideas for MLS 30 for 30 documentaries. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Welcome to the Bayou City Soccer Podcast! In this episode, Cris and Rudy break down a tough weekend for the Houston Dynamo, following a disappointing loss to the Colorado Rapids. While the Dynamo aren't technically out of playoff contention just yet, the writing seems to be on the wall — and this week could seal their fate.Next up: a crucial clash against the Portland Timbers at Shell Energy Stadium — a venue that's offered little comfort this season. What was meant to be a fortress has turned into a frustration. “Hell in Shell” has backfired for the Dynamo in 2025.The guys also take a hard look at the roster, discussing which players might be fighting for a spot on the 2026 squad as the final games of the season play out.-And much more!-We invite you to follow us at Bayou City Soccer!-BayouCitySoccer.net-@BayouCitySoccer on Facebook, IG, and Twitter-Hit us up using our hashtag #AskBCS-Hosts:@rudysegura3 on Twitter@crisputallaz on Twitter-Again, BayouCitySoccer.net for everything!
When the Rapids backs were against the wall, they showed absolute grit! The Colorado Rapids took the early 1-0 lead behind the one and only Cole Bassett. Then after the half, the Houston Dynamo made it interesting with their own efforts to win by tying it up during the 68th minute. But if you still believe in miracles, the Rapids provided one! Paxten Aaronson, in his home opener with the Rapids, goes on to make it look easy in the 7th minute of stoppage time. 2-1 is the final at DSGP! Connor Cape and Drew Moor had the call from Commerce City!

Hello Colorado Rapids fans. This week on Holding The High Line, we preview Houston Dynamo and revisit how Colorado Rapids spent the Moïse Bombito money.
Today on the From the Touchline podcast, I share from my experience this past weekend as I was invited out to be present in an athlete retirement ceremony and celebration. For the Glory KC is back with the 144th episode of the show!Sporting Kansas City broke a nearly two-month winless streak on Saturday night against the Colorado Rapids. The streak went back to their last win, also against the Rapids, on July 4th in Commerce City. And while "winless" is technically right, it was worse than that. Between victories over Colorado, Sporting KC were 0-5-1, with just a single draw against NYCFC.The defense was still flawed, and defense often starts further up the field, so there is blame to go around. Colorado should have scored far more than the two goals they put in, if not for outstanding individual efforts from John Pulskamp, Robert Voloder and Ian James. But it was something else that stood out on Saturday. With Manu Garcia still unavailable due to injury, Kerry Zavagnin finally used Santiago Munoz as a straight up #10. You could call it a second striker, but he was floating all over creating opportunities. He was involved in so many attacking sequences and seemed to unlock Sporting KC's creativity. Not every sequence ended with a shot, but there was so much promise.Another move I've been asking for is not starting all three strikers together. It leaves no impact subs on the bench to play forward. With Mason Toye starting on the bench, it was a combination of him subbing on and Santi unlocking the midfield that led to the game winning goal. Munoz played a perfect ball to Toye to finished with precision to push SKC over the line for their seventh win of the season.Of course, Sheena and I talked about a lot more Sporting KC happenings in this episode, including:Our favorite goal of the night (there were so many good candidates)Pulskamp heroicsThat James save off the line!Daniel Salloi showing man strengthInternational callups and so much moreThe KC Current did what we basically expect them to do at this point. Just keep winning. They've won twice since our last podcast and clinched a playoff spot. They aren't that far away from locking up the NWSL Shield. But ultimately, the season will be defined by what they do in the playoffs. Hello Colorado Rapids fans. This weekend the club will be retiring Marcelo Balboa's #17 jersey. It's just the fifth jersey number retirement in MLS history and the second one for Colorado (Pablo Mastroeni's #25 was retired July 4, 2021). Shortly after the end of the 2022 MLS season, we interviewed Celo. This was after the Altitude TV contract had expired. MLS was in the middle of setting up MLS Season Pass on Apple TV. Teams were saying goodbye to their local broadcast partners. Celo was in limbo. He was happy and at peace, amid the uncertainty. Here's that interview again. We discuss him growing up in Southern California and transitioning from college soccer to the fledgling semi-professional game in America. The Colorado Foxes come up. We talk bicycle kicks, his rehab to make the USMNT for the 1994 World Cup, and that wild Copa America. He gets real about his struggles academically, with injuries, and in his personal life. He's got some good stories about his time at Club Leon (Marcelo Balboa Clasico Champions, you'll never sing that!). Then we discuss his legendary Colorado Rapids moments: That phone call with Phil Anschutz, the first goal in Rapids history, the 1997 MLS Cup Final, the 1999 U.S. Open Cup Final, getting traded to the MetroStars, and more. We touch on what he's done since retiring, working with the Rapids Academy, doing soccer media in English y Espanol, y mas! Congratulations Celo. Thank you for everything. Legend, now and always.
Christian Polanco and Alexis Guerreros welcome USMNT and MLS legend Marcelo Balboa to the show. They discuss his soccer journey, including his decision to return to the U.S. to help launch Major League Soccer in 1996. What were the hardships that came with it — and was it worth the sacrifice?Christian and Alexis then dive into Marcelo's USMNT journey, including his role in the 1994 World Cup team's magical run on home soil. Will the 2026 World Cup in the U.S. live up to 1994? How can this new squad elevate soccer in America to the next level?Later, Marcelo reflects on the honor of having his jersey retired by the Colorado Rapids. He also shares why he has a problem with former USMNT players — like Landon Donovan — being overly critical of the current squad, and why Christian Pulisic deserves a break. (2:30) – Marcelo Balboa joins The Cooligans(6:30) – Marcelo on why he helped launch MLS(29:00) – Marcelo's USMNT journey & thoughts on team's World Cup future(44:00) – What it meant to have his jersey retired by Colorado Rapids(48:00) – Marcelo on criticism from ex-USMNT players Subscribe to The Cooligans on your favorite podcast app:
