Hello Colorado Rapids fans. This week on Holding The High Line, we preview Houston Dynamo and revisit how Colorado Rapids spent the Moïse Bombito money.
Today on the From the Touchline podcast, I share from my experience this past weekend as I was invited out to be present in an athlete retirement ceremony and celebration. Clint Irwin, former Colorado Rapids goalkeeper, who also played for Toronto FC and Minnesota United FC, had a moment for friends and family to gather. […]
For the Glory KC is back with the 144th episode of the show!Sporting Kansas City broke a nearly two-month winless streak on Saturday night against the Colorado Rapids. The streak went back to their last win, also against the Rapids, on July 4th in Commerce City. And while "winless" is technically right, it was worse than that. Between victories over Colorado, Sporting KC were 0-5-1, with just a single draw against NYCFC.The defense was still flawed, and defense often starts further up the field, so there is blame to go around. Colorado should have scored far more than the two goals they put in, if not for outstanding individual efforts from John Pulskamp, Robert Voloder and Ian James. But it was something else that stood out on Saturday. With Manu Garcia still unavailable due to injury, Kerry Zavagnin finally used Santiago Munoz as a straight up #10. You could call it a second striker, but he was floating all over creating opportunities. He was involved in so many attacking sequences and seemed to unlock Sporting KC's creativity. Not every sequence ended with a shot, but there was so much promise.Another move I've been asking for is not starting all three strikers together. It leaves no impact subs on the bench to play forward. With Mason Toye starting on the bench, it was a combination of him subbing on and Santi unlocking the midfield that led to the game winning goal. Munoz played a perfect ball to Toye to finished with precision to push SKC over the line for their seventh win of the season.Of course, Sheena and I talked about a lot more Sporting KC happenings in this episode, including:Our favorite goal of the night (there were so many good candidates)Pulskamp heroicsThat James save off the line!Daniel Salloi showing man strengthInternational callups and so much moreThe KC Current did what we basically expect them to do at this point. Just keep winning. They've won twice since our last podcast and clinched a playoff spot. They aren't that far away from locking up the NWSL Shield. But ultimately, the season will be defined by what they do in the playoffs. Before we get there though, we talk through the victories over the Portland Thorns and North Carolina Courage. In the Digital Crawl, we hit on a few more topics, including:St. Louis fire their Sporting DirectorBarbra Banda done for the yearThe USWNT game at CPKC StadiumHere is a rundown of topics and start times:Sporting KC's big comeback victory - 8:22SKC make moves and Intl. Never was the gap in quality so significantly on display during this recent stretch of games than it was in Seattle Sunday night as Sporting KC made it no wins in 6 straight getting pretty well dominated by the Sounders 5-2.Not only were SKC thoroughly outplayed, they were outplayed by youth players that were more engaged, better prepared, and just playing at a higher speed than SKC's youth could match. It was quite the on the job training for several of them, and many failed to meet the standard. The starting tactic was fairly aggressive, and failed to make a lot of sense given how recent opponents had frustrated Seattle in their last two games. Leading us into a deeper conversation about Kerry Zavagnin's potential as the coach that could lead this team forward through it's fairly significant winter rebuild. The USMNT discourse was set ablaze by both the roster selections of Mauricio Pochettino as well as his commentary afterwards. Neither of us are sure it's as big of a deal as it's being made out to be, but it's certainly entertaining. Finally a quick word on the Current and the shambolic management of NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman, and a quick preview of this week's home match vs. the Colorado Rapids.Music by The Spin Wires

Hello Colorado Rapids fans. This weekend the club will be retiring Marcelo Balboa's #17 jersey. It's just the fifth jersey number retirement in MLS history and the second one for Colorado (Pablo Mastroeni's #25 was retired July 4, 2021). Shortly after the end of the 2022 MLS season, we interviewed Celo. This was after the Altitude TV contract had expired. MLS was in the middle of setting up MLS Season Pass on Apple TV. Teams were saying goodbye to their local broadcast partners. Celo was in limbo. He was happy and at peace, amid the uncertainty. Here's that interview again. We discuss him growing up in Southern California and transitioning from college soccer to the fledgling semi-professional game in America. The Colorado Foxes come up. We talk bicycle kicks, his rehab to make the USMNT for the 1994 World Cup, and that wild Copa America. He gets real about his struggles academically, with injuries, and in his personal life. He's got some good stories about his time at Club Leon (Marcelo Balboa Clasico Champions, you'll never sing that!). Then we discuss his legendary Colorado Rapids moments: That phone call with Phil Anschutz, the first goal in Rapids history, the 1997 MLS Cup Final, the 1999 U.S. Open Cup Final, getting traded to the MetroStars, and more. We touch on what he's done since retiring, working with the Rapids Academy, doing soccer media in English y Espanol, y mas! Congratulations Celo. Thank you for everything. Legend, now and always.

The Colorado Rapids had revenge on their mind as they wanted to end League's Cup on a high note. So to ensure that happened, Rafael Navarro got them on the board in the 3rd minute of play vs Cruz Azul. The Rapids go on to take a 2-0 lead with the help of Cole Bassett and Andreas Maxso! But unfortunately, old habits die hard as the Rapids give up a goal right before the half. The 78th minute rolls around and Cruz Azul rolls it in to tie things up 2-2. No regulation or extra time scoring so to penalty kicks we go. Cruz Azul win 5-4 during penalty kicks to win their final 2 points of League's Cup in 2025.

Hello Colorado Rapids fans. Earlier today, news broke that Colorado Rapids are on the verge of trading Djordje Mihailović to Toronto FC for a club record $8 million. Rabbi and Red get together for an emergency podcast to discuss how this could have happened and what it says about the club. Matt wrote out some good thoughts on specific indications and implications going forward. Mark looks big picture. Colorado's going to have more money to spend than ever before with 17 days left in the secondary transfer window. Can Chris Armas keep the group together? Can Pádraig Smith spend that money well and quickly like never before? It seems like the Burgundy Boys are at a crossroads. Many fans are wondering if this is a sinking ship. This is shocking, horrible, ironic, condemning, and oh so Rapids. Oh, and the Rapids played two games last week and have two games this week. We acknowledge their existence.

Hello Colorado Rapids fans. Welcome back to Memories From Toronto, a Holding The High Line Production. My name is Matt Pollard. On this episode of our 2010 MLS Cup interview series, I speak with the man who made this all happen, forward Macoumba Kandji. Mac and I discuss his emigration to the United States and soccer career that led him to Colorado Rapids. We talk about his relationship with Steve Guppy and that questionable PK at Columbus Crew. He got away with one there. We of course get his thoughts on his play to create the MLS Cup winning own goal, in which he tore his ACL going up against former Rapid Ugo Ihemelu. He gets real on how he's reconciled sacrificing his body and affecting his career to win a major trophy. This conversation hits different, you guys. Mac Kandji is built different and he says as much. You can listen to previous episodes of Memories From Toronto where we interview Marvell Wynne, Kosuke Kimura, Omar Cummings, Paul Bravo, Jeff Plush, and Drew Moor.
