Psalm 100 is a song for giving joyful praise. And behold, in honor of the 2026 FIFA World Cup now being less than 100 days away from kicking off, Soccer Psalm 100 features on the podcast this week. Soon, there will be much celebration and jubilation (and some sadness when one’s team loses) around the world’s biggest stage and tournament. I wrote Soccer Psalm 100 from the perspective of the fans — those who sit and await the match to begin. They start the party well ahead of the game. There is food and fellowship and footy happening. In the USA, we call it tailgating. In the UK, people gather at the local pub for “chippies” before a joyful march to the stadium ground. In other parts of the world, there are other, similar pre-match rituals and routines — usually expressive of joy and eager anticipation to get behind one’s team. In many ways, we await the triumphant procession and return of Jesus and the Cup Final to end all Cup Finals. Enjoy this soccer psalm for this week’s podcast. The Soccer Psalms, is a self-published book available on Amazon. (You can also find The Football Psalms-a British version-if you appreciate the different terms around the game). Both books are available globally on Amazon and contain 31 psalms that have been translated into “soccer psalms” — with words, language, and metaphors that connect soccer to God’s Word. I also include some reflection on the context and writing as well as some questions for reflection. Hosts Jake Zivin and Patrick Harris provide a welcome back to the MLS season and recap the Timbers' big home-opening victory over Columbus. Jake also sits down with new Timbers midfielder Cole Bassett and the show then looks ahead to this weekend's road match against the Colorado Rapids.
It’s the home opener this weekend for my club team, the Colorado Rapids. It has me thinking and reflecting on home. I am a Denver and Colorado native (we’re rare these days). And our beautiful state is surrounded by roadway signs that say “Welcome to Colorful Colorado.” But the signs aren’t what you think that they might be. Today, on the podcast, I reflect more on the “signage” in our life that mark out the home space. The words of Jeremiah, the prophet, to the nation of Israel were filled with hope in a pretty desperate time. He told them, take note of the road. Mark out the signposts. They are words of promise — that a return would happen, that God would be doing a new thing in the land (and to the people). Those promises are true for us, today, as well. Before we preview, we discuss Matt Doyle leaving MLS dot com. Mark gives his key observations from Rapids Media Day. We talk Miguel Navarro returning to the Rapids and the end of preseason. What are our expectations for Dante Sealy given the $1.9 million price tag? Can Hamzat Ojediran be Hamzat The Destroyer and make the team concede less goals? Who is starting at left center back and left back and will they be good enough? Who starts at the other winger opposite Dante Sealy and will they be good enough? Who will be the captain and who will provide the vocal leadership this team needs? How will Denver Summit impact the Rapids? Can the Rapids capitalize on the game at Mile High and the World Cup? Will KSE bring back the members of the front office who are in a contract year? Oh, and we also talk about the Seattle Sounders game. Gulp. We discuss a few pieces of content during the episode. Every season, there is usually a team or two that acknowledges a “rebuilding” year. It can come with a transition of a new coach, an influx of several athletes, changes in management, or the loss of key individuals upon whom the organization was depending on. Rebuilding is never easy — especially after a devastating loss (like the California wildfires of 2025) where a whole community suffers or is destroyed. How does one rebuild in such times. Today, on the podcast, as we begin the season of Lent and prepare for the start of Major League Soccer, rebuilding begins with a right heart posture. Isaiah 58 sets the stage as we consider what it looks like to get right with God so that He might be our help and our support. It isn’t about a false religiosity, rather it’s about how our Sunday-morning selves live out the rest of our faith walk throughout the week — whether in our jobs, our homes, our schools, or elsewhere. From the Touchline is a short-feature podcast with Rev Brad Kenney, Founder and Executive Director of Soccer Chaplains United and Volunteer Chaplain to the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer. Tottenham have parted ways with Thomas Frank, and the big question is: was he really the problem? The boys dig into what's actually happening at Spurs, whether the issues run deeper than the head coach, and which managers could realistically step in to fix things. Is this about tactics, recruitment, ownership — or something bigger? Then Austin FC striker Brandon Vazquez joins the show for an honest and revealing conversation. He opens up about recovering from his ACL injury, doing “quick maths” in his head about the World Cup timeline the moment he got hurt, and what it will take to fight his way back into the U.S. Men's National Team picture. Vazquez also shares what it was really like playing in Liga MX — from nonstop media attention to the intensity of fan culture — and how it compares to MLS. Plus, we get the full origin story of his “Superman” goal celebration (yes, including the capes). To close it out, the boys react to the 2026 MLS kit reveal and give their unfiltered best and worst picks. Which clubs nailed it? Which designs should've stayed in the concept phase? We're handing out praise, roasting questionable choices, and ranking the fits you'll be seeing all season long. As we wrap up our series on temptation, we look at the fifth and final stage of temptation and sin — the stage of obsession. The progressive slide of temptation leading into sin and sin leading, eventually, to death. Stage five is the most hurtful and the most helpless that we can feel (for ourselves or for our loved ones). How do we get out of the spiral? Today, on the podcast, it’s not to be glib or trite, but sometimes the only help, the only salvation has to come from Jesus. When the captivity stage leads to a neurotic obsession where self-destruction is the path, there is sometimes something that only Jesus can help to heal. We look at a few stories in scripture to see this example and to suggest that sometimes our best prayer is the simplest one — one that acknowledges our desire but our weakness. Hello Colorado Rapids fans. This is another episode in our Memories From Toronto series, where we interview people from the 2010 Colorado Rapids. There's still several of these interviews waiting to be released. I've got a few soccer new resolutions for 2026, and sharing these with you is one of them. On this episode, I speak with Steve Guppy, the top assistant coach under Gary Smith. Steve grew up in Winchester, north of Southampton in England. Played for more than a decade in the Football league. From 1990-92, he and Gary Smith were teammates at Wycombe Wanderers. Spent three years at Celtic, winning the Scottish Premiership. In the later half of his playing career, he played for D.C. United and Rochester Rhinos. In 2008, Gary Smith got hired at Colorado Rapids. He recruited his former Wycombe teammate into retirement to start his coaching career. Guppy discusses that season, his affinity for creative wide players that led to the acquisition of Mac Kandji, and the fallout from the 2011 season. For those who listened to the Jeff Plush and Paul Bravo episodes, Guppy gives his and Smith's side of those relationships and the ultimate parting of ways. There's a lot to learn from what he says and doesn't say. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

As we continue our series on temptation, we look at the fourth stage, today. A logismoi (Greek) is an obtrusive, invading thought that assaults our mind, that setups a temptation. There is a progressive nature to temptation in that it leads to sin and, eventually, to death. Today, on the podcast, we look at stage 4 — captivity. The captivity stage is where we keep falling over and over to the same temptation. It’s a trap that we can’t seem to get out of. We may still battle, but we lose more than we win. We might even have stretches of victory or success in staving off the temptation and we might think we are safe or okay, but then it comes back in a voracious manner. Community is key to dealing with the captivity stage and we get into that in the podcast today. From the Touchline is a short-feature podcast with Rev Brad Kenney, Founder and Executive Director of Soccer Chaplains United and Volunteer Chaplain to the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer. Rev Brad and occasional guests touch on various issues around the topics of faith, family, and football (soccer). Also, don’t forget that you can listen in our app, SoccrChapUtd, in the Apple and Google store.
We’re in the midst of a series on how to handle temptation. Logismos (a Greek word describing those obtrusive, invading thoughts that assault our minds) has a number of stages that we go through, but ultimately, its path leads to destruction. James 1 has an excellent description of the nature of temptation — it’s source, how we often fall for it, and what it eventually leads to. Today, on the podcast, we look at stage 3 — consent. This is when we make a willful decision to act. This is when we commit sin — the dialogue wrestling is over and we’ve given over and given in to what likely began as a subtle whisper. But just because we fail, just because we fall doesn’t mean that we give up. There’s a pathway toward still resisting and still trying to be in proximity with God. We look at a few different passages to help us realize what this stage looks like and how we need to respond.
Last week, we started to look at how to handle temptation — the nature of the logismos (those obtrusive, invading thoughts) that get into our minds, into our heads. Stage 1 was about seeing and recognizing that temptation is pretty common and the thought (the whisper, the suggestion) isn’t itself sin, but it can lead there pretty quickly if we aren’t ready and aren’t prepared or strong enough spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and even physically. Today, on the podcast, we look at stage 2 — the dialogue. There tends to be this conversation that goes on in our head. It can be positive or negative depending on where we are at with things, but how to we best handle the inner dialogue and learn one of the best ways that God has given us a way to come out from underneath the attack? The answer is found in the Bible. Actually, the answer is the Bible, God’s Holy Word. We look at the temptation of Jesus as an exampeland template for how we ought to handle the dialogue phase and be ready for temptation when it comes. For the Glory KC is back with the 163rd episode of the show and the second show of 2026!Sporting Kansas City had a pretty big week. No, they didn't do much to fill out their miniscule roster, but it's almost certainly bigger than that. On Friday, news broke that Sporting KC minority owner Peter Mallouk was taking over as majority owner, holding an estimated 80 percent of the team. Sheena and I get into what this means for the team this season and beyond. Sam McDowell from the KC Star got an interview with Mallouk and we discussed several of his big quotes:“What you're going to see next season is a big, big financial commitment,” he said, “to do whatever it takes to build upon what we're building upon this season. ""I really would say 99.5% of the metric I'm going to care about is winning. And 0.5% will be everything else.”“The fans are incredible,” Mallouk said. “They deserve a competitor all the time.”There was actual movement on the roster with the signing of Calvin Harris. We got an inside take from the Burgundy Wave's Matt Pollard who has covered the Colorado Rapids for years. Sheena and I discuss the rumor that Cesar Inga is on his way to Kansas City. And we can't leave out the weird and wild Rogers Mato story. It doesn't stop there though, as SKC won their first preseason game and we have updates on Roger Espinoza, Willy Agada, Robert Voloder, Mason Toye, Paulo Nagamura, Alenis Vargas and Ramiz Hamouda. The KC Current also had a fairly big week with the announcement of their schedule, the trade of Nichelle Prince and some unfortunate injury new for Michelle Cooper and Temwa Chawinga. In the Digital Crawl, we hit on a few more topics, including:England, Netherlands and Argentina are all rumored to want to do World Cup base camp in KCLindsey Heaps is coming to the NWSLKC Comets pick up two big winsHere is a rundown of topics and start times:Sporting KC sold! - 9:14SKC Sign a Player and lots of other stories - 25:11KC Current Schedule, Prince trade and more - 54:16Digital Crawl - 1:11:58As a special gift to For the Glory KC listeners and KC Soccer Journal readers, Backheeled dot com is giving away 30 days of their amazing, independent American soccer coverage for free. Hello Colorado Soccer fans! Happy New Year! Holding The High Line is back for 2026 just in time to talk about Lindsey Heaps signing with Denver Summit FC. We might be a Summit podcast now. We discuss the Great Horan Linsey Heaps signing a precontract with Summit. We discuss this massive move, what it means for the expansion club and the Rapids. We have updates on Summit and the Pids playing a home game at Mile High as well as Summit renting out DICK's Sporting Goods Park in the spring. What a fascinating case study experiment we get to witness, and all because Summit's temporary stadium has construction delays. Oh, and Mark pokes Matt about Chris Armas getting the KC Current job. Then the guys talk Rapids preseason. We've got a schedule, some new coaches (we'll miss you Chris Little), a preseason roster, and some center back rumors. We break it all down. Oh and Footy Headlines thinks the new Rapids kit will be black and sky blue. Hope that's fake news. Check out this article from Maxwell's blog about the state of the fanbase. Thank you for listening to HTHL, High Liners and haters. Happy New Year. We are so back. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. During the MLS preseason, a lot of physical, mental, and emotional preparations go on. But what about our spiritual preparations? What about preparing for some of the challenges that we face in life — whether we are at home or on a month-long trip for preseason on the road? Today, on the podcast, I begin a series on temptation. Looking at the nature of it and way to combat it we get into the first stage of temptation, the assaultive thoughts that attack our minds. Are these attacks dramatic and loud? Is it a sin to be tempted? What’s God’s part in all of this? We dive into some of these questions and more. From the Touchline is a short-feature podcast with Rev Brad Kenney, Founder and Executive Director of Soccer Chaplains United and Volunteer Chaplain to the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer. Three King’s Day was yesterday, January 6. It is the time that marks the end of the Christmas season and the visit of the Magi to the Christ child. Many speak of the three kings — in song, story (some fable), and poem — but what we know is that there were three gifts that are mentioned in Matthew 2: gifts of gold, incense, and myrrh. These three gifts hold multiple meanings — symbolic on different levels, but they also might be a point of introspection for us as we move into the new year. Today, on the podcast, what gifts of wealth (gold), worship (incense), and weakness (myrrh) do you and I bring into 2026? Whether as an athlete, coach, staffer, or chaplain — and whether it is into our work spaces or into our homes or church communities each of us brings these gifts (given by God) and they are a beautiful part of who we are. Some of you know that I love my Scottish/English/Irish heritage (maybe a little too much). I have found much within Celtic Christianity, that I connect with and today on the podcast, I share about a Scottish tradition of ‘first-footing.’ Essentially, the first guest into someone’s home for the New Year carries symbolic and representative gifts that are to be a boon and blessing for the year to come. My encouragement today is that we need to let Jesus Christ ‘first-foot’ into our hearts, homes, and lives. Whether as a professional footballer or coach, as a chaplain, or simply as a fan. We need to let Jesus be first in the door and to bring us the gift of himself to fulfill all our hopes and desires. Praying that you and your loved ones have a blessed and wonderful 2026 as you let Jesus ‘first-foot’! Hey friends, sometimes it can be hard to find that gift for that special person who enjoys soccer. I just wanted to quickly share a couple of resources that might be great gift ideas during this Christmas season. I recently had a couple of conversations with some friends and suggested a couple of devotionals to fit the need. The Light is Coming, The Five Women You Meet In Faith and Football, and more recently, The Soccer Psalms, are all faith and football/soccer related devotionals. It could be a great tool or resource for helping to encourage a child or grandchild in their faith and in seeing the way that their faith can relate to soccer. The Light is Coming is also written in Spanish and Portuguese as part of our 2022 FIFA Men’s World Cup outreach. The Soccer Psalms is written in British english as The Football Psalms and in Spanish as Los Salmos del Fútbol and hopefully next year will be released in French and Portuguese — you can find each of these on Amazon, pretty much anywhere in the world! If you have a team that you’d like to get the devotionals for or want to order in a large quantity to give away as gifts, please feel free to reach to me at brad@soccerchaplainsunited.org and we’d love to help you gift these to your team. Have a wonderful Christmas! Hey, soccer fans! Nick is back with Part 2 of his Chicago Fire and Major League Soccer holiday roundup. Today, he discusses the rumored divisional realignment that could take place with the 2027-2028 MLS season. This alignment would see the departure from the current Eastern/Western Conferences and transition to six, geographic based divisions, specifically: Midwest: Chicago Fire, Minnesota United, St. Louis City, Sporting KC, FC Cincinnati, Columbus Crew. Pacific/Northwest: Portland Timbers, Seattle Sounders, Vancouver Whitecaps, San Jose Earthquakes, Real Salt Lake, Colorado Rapids. South/West: LA Galaxy, LAFC, San Diego FC, Austin FC, Houston Dynamo, FC Dallas East/Southeast: DC United, Nashville SC, Atlanta United, Orlando City, Inter Miami, Charlotte FC East/Northeast: Philadelphia Union, New York Red Bulls, New York City FC, Toronto FC, CF Montreal, New England Revolution In the second half of the show, Nick previews the Coachella Valley Invitational tournment. This season, the Men in Red face LA Galaxy, Austin FC, and the Portland Timbers in their pre-season tournament. These cross-conference opponents provide a great test for the Fire as they look to build on a succesful 2025 season. Tune in and join the conversation! The Morning Espresso opens with a major conversation in MLS as the Colorado Rapids put their identity in the hands of supporters, launching a fan-driven process that could shape the club's future ahead of a pivotal 2026. From there, we turn to a busy Domestic Focus, with NWSL news headlined by Catarina Macario's contract situation, stadium momentum for Denver Summit FC, rising club valuations, and continued investment in young talent across the league.Globally, AFCON delivers late drama and early statements, with Zambia rescuing a point, South Africa breaking a long opening-day drought, and Egypt leaning on Mohamed Salah once again. We also check in on Real Madrid's uneasy calm... maybe the telenovela is taking a break for the holidays.
Hello Colorado Soccer fans. On this episode of Holding The High Line, we pod in between holidays to discuss all the news. Rabbi and Red react to the Matt Wells official announcement as Colorado Rapids head coach. Red spoke to him. Hear his first impressions. We give our thoughts on the One Club, One Legacy fan survey about possibly rebranding. Most fans on social media don't like this. We've got some info from the club side of things. We also talk MLS SuperDraft with the main story being Colorado needing to protect Billo Diop despite having him under contract for 2026. Then we go full Home Alone. Red talks Noah Cobb, Dante Sealy, Hamzat Ojediran, the proposed division re-alignment, the anniversary game at Mile High against Lionel Messi and Inter Miami, and the Denver Summit stadium plan getting approved by the Denver City Council. That Matt Wells interview will be in your feed later this week. Happy Holidays High Liners. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Christmas is just a few days away — during this time of year, waiting seems more pronounced. Whether waiting in a line at the store, waiting for that gift or package to arrive, waiting for a family member to come home, and more. In soccer, this time of year is filled with other kinds of waiting — for a new contract, a new team; waiting for the results of a scan or working through the rehab and recovery from an injury; waiting for the next season to start and a new chance to prove one’s self. But in all the waiting moments of life, how do we learn how to wait? Today on the From the Touchline podcast, I share from Luke’s Gospel, chapters 1 and 2, briefly referencing different people who are in ‘waiting’ mode and deriving some lessons from the waiting that they went through as perhaps examples and models for ourselves, today. From the Touchline is a short-feature podcast with Rev Brad Kenney, Founder and Executive Director of Soccer Chaplains United and Volunteer Chaplain to the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer. Last Friday, the world watched as the participants for the 2026 FIFA World Cup were drawn into their groups for what may be the most epic soccer tournament of our lives to date. Spread across three countries — US, Mexico, and Canada — a historic 48 teams will take part in this next World Cup. It promises to be an amazing time. Today on the From the Touchline podcast, I share some thoughts on the world’s biggest stage for the Beautiful Game. For many years, I simply introduced myself as “Chaplain to the Colorado Rapids.” That is until someone asked me how much my typical position paid. Whoops! I explained that I am a volunteer and I raise support (like a missionary) to do the work I do and am in no way funded by the team […]
For the Glory KC is back with the 155th episode of the show!Sporting Kansas City and the KC Current did literally nothing this week, so we are filling in with offseason content!Sheena and I did our first ever "For the Glory KC Awards" and gave out many fake prizes to players on both teams. From MVP to Newcomer of the year to strange categories like best hair and best personality. There are the awards you'd expect and everything in between. We also asked the question, which is more shocking? Peter Vermes getting fired with nearly four years left on his contract or Vlatko Andonovski stepping down unexpectedly after the greatest regular season in NWSL history?Speaking of Vermes, he was reported to be up for the Atlanta United job that ultimately went to Tata Martino. Which left the question, where should Peter land if he stays in MLS? There are only a few jobs left open and the New York Red Bulls one looks like it's going to Michael Bradley (according to Tom Bogert of the Athletic). So that only left open the Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew (soon enough), St. Louis City and of course Sporting KC.In addition to picking Vermes' landing spot, we ponder the question of how nervous should we be that Sporting KC still only have 14 signed players and no coach with preseason set to start in just over five weeks on January 10th?We also cover the news about Kansas City and the 2031 Women's World Cup, Bia Zaneratto possibly heading to Brazil and a lot of USWNT news for the full team, U-23s and U-20s.In the Digital Crawl, we hit on a few more topics, including:MLS Cup where everyone is rooting for Vancouver over MiamiThe 2028 Copa America maybe coming to the USAPhoenix possibly landing MLS and NWSL expansion teamsand UMKC's NCAA Tournament fateHere is a rundown of topics and start times:End of Year Awards - 3:22Sporting KC roster, coach and Vermes' fate - 47:222031 WWC Update - 56:28KC Current roundup - 1:04:12She Scores - 1:06:35Digital Crawl - 1:17:31Upcoming GamesMLS Cup: Vancouver Whitecaps vs Inter Miami, Saturday, Dec. 6th at 1:30PM CSTWorld Sevens Football TourneyWomen's College Cup (CPKC Stadium)As a special gift to For the Glory KC listeners and KC Soccer Journal readers, Backheeled dot com is giving away 30 days of their amazing, independent American soccer coverage for free. Chris Armas is a 2025 inductee into the US Soccer Hall of Fame. During his playing career, he played 12 seasons in Major League Soccer for the LA Galaxy and Chicago Fire, and was a 5x MLS Best XI selection, an MLS and US Open Cup Champion, and played 66 games for the US National Team. The 2000 US Soccer Player of the Year and 2005 MLS Comeback Player of the Year, untimely injuries derailed his inclusion in the 2002 and 2006 US World Cup teams. After retireing from playing, Chris began a coaching career that has taken him to assistant coach roles at Manchester United and Leeds United, as well as MLS Head Coaching stops with the NY Red Bulls (2018 Supporters Shield winners), Toronto FC, and in 2024-2025 the Colorado Rapids. In 2024, he led the Rapids to a remarkable improvement of 23 points, finishing 7th after finishing dead last in 2023. For this he was named an MLSCoach of the Year finalist. In 2025, the Rapids missed out on the playoffs on the final day, and Armas and the Rapids agreed to part ways. In our conversation today, Chris and John discuss the importance of building strong relationships with athletes, establishing trust, and helping each player get better. We discuss his time in England, meeting Sir Alex Ferguson, the British press, and his time in Colorado including the the joys of 2024 and the heartbreak of missing out on the 2025 players due to a stoppage time goal. You will see that Chris is humble, authentic, and driven to keep coaching and learning, and its a wonderful conversation to understand the humanity needed to coach at the top level.
