Commuters in London face more disruption as a second 24-hour Tube strike starts later this week. No further talks have taken place to settle the dispute and drivers in the RMT union are set to continue industrial action. UK correspondent Enda Brady says this is likely to frustrate commuters. As well as stopping arms shipments to Israel they have also stopped shipments of munitions to Ukraine and to Saudi Arabia (for use in its genocidal war against Yemen). All week I have been covering the strike by members of the RMT union working for London Underground, which has paralysed the capital. While some Tube trains have been running on each day, they represent only a tiny fraction of the network.I took one of the rare trains running from Baker Street to Harrow-on-the-Hill, sharing the journey with a pigeon and a handful of humans. This podcast is free, as is Independent Travel's weekly newsletter. Commuters in the capital face a four-day Tube shutdown next week and disruption from Sunday until Friday if a union presses ahead with threatened strike action, Transport for London has warned. Talks held between TfL and the RMT union today have attempted to avert what will be one of the worst strikes in years - but no resolution has been found. The Standard's City Hall & Transport Editor Ross Lydall is here with the latest. And in part two, as second-hand September kicks off, The Standard's Commissioning Editor and Culture Writer Vicky Jessop joins us to discuss the best places for vintage shopping. Hosted on Acast. Building work on the London Underground has disturbed a nest of Weevils. The ravenous creatures are hunting for flesh. Can Torchwood One contain the feast?
It was a “nightmare” before Christmas at Hyde Park Corner tube station with “unsafe” scenes caused by train delays and “staggering levels of criminal and antisocial behaviour” from some people apparently returning from the Winter Wonderland event. TfL is investigating after a station worker described how dozens of people at a time barging through ticket barriers, plus threats to assault staff when asked to stop vaping in the station, during the incident earlier this month. It came as new laws went on the statute books requiring minimum service levels on strike days - just in time for a potential New Year strike by RMT members. You can hear Evening Standard transport editor Ross Lydall's interview with transport secretary Mark Harper on strike strategy, plus his latest analysis on the Hyde Park Corner station chaos. London endures another 24 hours of Underground closures in RMT strikes over pensions and station job cuts. Transport for London says passenger numbers were only at 10 per cent of normal demand on Thursday. Meanwhile, nurses vote to walkout in a pay and working conditions dispute amid record NHS waiting lists. So what does winter hold in store? Analysis with Evening Standard transport editor Ross Lydall and health reporter Daniel Keane. TfL say passenger numbers only at 10 per cent of normal demand. Hosted on Acast. London is once again gummed up by a Tube strike involving members of the RMT union.Transport for London, which runs the Underground, is accused by the union of threatening 600 jobs, tearing up working agreements and posing a “looming threat to pensions”.Workers point out that they worked all the way through Covid to keep trains running, and do not wish to accept any compulsory job losses. But finances for public transport have been utterly trashed by the coronavirus pandemic. There is a funding shortfall of at least 20% and the railways – under and over the ground – depend on taxpayer support to keep running. I am not convinced that today's strike, and a national rail stoppage planned for the summer, is necessarily the best way to guarantee a strong future for the industry.Of course, this podcast is free as is my weekly newsletter, which you can get every Friday: https://www.independent.co.uk/newsletters See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The team talk all things since the election - a particularly painful experience for Ben it seems. The (correctly) predict the Lib Dem leadership, which was bold of them, but suggest a shock candidate as Sepp Blatter's replacement, ponder Greece, the Budget, the Tube Strike, and which Labour leadership contender would do best at a garden centre.
Has this happened to you?: You're walking down the street and you see someone you know and they just... walk on by? What do you do? Or conversely, you are walking down the street and you don't feel like talking to them... what do you do? It's tough being friends sometimes. We mean the best, but ultimately we are all quite selfish creatures. And jealous ones too. How do you deal with your bestie falling in love and spending more time with HIM that with YOU? And whilst we are talking about walking (see what I did there?) where do you prefer to cross the road? Do you make an effort to cross in the right place? Of course we wouldn't be walking at all if there wasn't a Tube Strike. Did it affect you? Do you support the strikers? Have you ever been on strike yourself? Do you even care about the issues? Also in this episode: Lofty wants to know why people are just so rude, Denis-Jose gives us an update on his 30 Day Challenges and Browny doesn't want to talk about technology... And what does Valentines Day mean to you?
In the middle of London, just before what would be the announcement of the Tube Strike. Arrival London last Sunday June7th late afternoon, walking to the hotel via Kings Cross. Hotel fine but room not ok, enormous continuous loud noise in the pipes of the bathroom made it impossible to get some sleep! Earlier that night kindly for another room, did not get it because the hotel was 'full'. Later that night changed our tone a bit and insisted on getting another room, and so another room was available all of sudden. Rest of the week, perfectly fine in this bigger and most of all - quiet - room without extra costs. Super! The WiFi sucked but luckily there was BTopenzone. Up the hill we arrived in Islington.
