En persona vieron los partidos casi siete millones de personas y por televisión más de 5.000 millones. Todo eso es dinero, mucho dinero, tanto como 15.000 millones de dólares para la FIFA, muy por encima de las previsiones más optimistas que había hecho su presidente, Gianni Infantino. Quizá por eso mismo guardaba en la recámara un plan muy ambicioso y también un tanto temerario. El plan, que se filtró a la prensa, consistía en segregar los derechos comerciales de sus campeonatos más rentables y traspasarlos a una empresa de nueva creación, FIFA Forward Enterprise, que se encargaría de las retransmisiones, los patrocinios, las entradas, las licencias y la la organización de los Mundiales. En torno al 20% de esa empresa, que estimaban que podría valer 20.000 millones de dólares, sería propiedad de inversores privados. La alegría duró sólo tres días. El primer problema fue la compañía elegida. Al frente del grupo inversor figuraba Thrive Capital, la firma de Joshua Kushner, hermano de Jared, el yerno de Donald Trump. El parentesco bastó para enfadar a los críticos, ya irritados con la familiaridad que muestra Infantino con Trump allá donde se encuentran. Todo lo habían preparado en secreto durante meses, con JPMorgan tasando la operación y sin que el consejo de la FIFA, las confederaciones ni las 211 federaciones nacionales supieran nada. Infantino pensaba presentarlo este mes con medio mundo de vacaciones, hasta que la filtración del informe de JPMorgan lo estropeó todo. El modelo no es nuevo, y ahí saltaron las alarmas. Uno de los arquitectos, Greg Maffei, ya reconvirtió hace unos años la Fórmula 1 en una máquina de hacer dinero. El otro precedente, el del PGA Tour de golf, servía de advertencia de que al final los inversores privados terminan decidiéndolo todo. La promesa de más dinero para todos seguramente trajese Mundiales reservados solo a los países ricos, muchas más competiciones y entradas más caras. Que la FIFA jurase que iba a mantener el control absoluto era difícil de creer en un organismo que semanas antes se había plegado a Trump para revisar una tarjeta roja en un partido. La UEFA rechazó el plan de plano. Sus 55 federaciones, España incluida, acordaron boicotear todas las competiciones de la FIFA mientras la propuesta siguiera viva. Como el próximo Mundial se juega en España y Portugal, eso equivalía a cancelar la próxima cita mundialista. Se sumaron otras voces, desde el primer ministro británico Andy Burnham hasta el desacreditado Sepp Blatter, erigido curiosamente ahora en guardián de la pureza del fútbol. A todos les vino a la cabeza la Superliga de 2021, tras la que también estaba JPMorgan y que se desinfló en muy poco tiempo. El viernes por la noche, 72 horas después de la filtración, Infantino tiró la toalla. Pero lo que le decidió no fueron los ataques externos, sino el fuego amigo. L'annonce du projet, qui serait par ailleurs lié à la famille élargie de Donald Trump, provoque l'inquiétude de nombreuses fédérations nationales ou continentales, avec en première ligne la fronde de l'UEFA. Analyse de Yassine El Yattioui, enseignant-chercheur à l'université Lumière Lyon II.  RFI : Concrètement, comment Gianni Infantino compte-t-il s'y prendre pour vendre des parts de la Coupe du monde à des acteurs privés ? Yassine El Yattioui : Selon le journal britannique The Times, qui a dévoilé le projet de la Fifa avant que l'instance ne communique officiellement, Gianni Infantino serait pressenti pour diriger lui-même ce fonds d'investissement privé à la fin de son mandat de la présidence de la Fifa, ce qui lui permettrait de gagner personnellement plusieurs dizaines de millions de dollars par an. On voit des intérêts personnels importants. Dans le cas de la Fifa, la question centrale, c'est celle de la position dominante, parce que la Fifa n'est pas une entreprise privée classique, mais contrôle l'un des produits les plus puissants du monde : la Coupe du monde. Cette compétition concentre une valeur économique importante avec les droits audiovisuels, les partenariats commerciaux, les prix des places également – qui ont fait polémique lors de la dernière édition américaine –, et le sponsoring et l'exploitation mondiale de la marque. Maintenant, le débat à propos de cette vente privée du plus grand tournoi sportif du monde porte sur un paradoxe, parce qu'une organisation à but non lucratif – c'est le statut officiel de la Fifa – est chargée de réguler le football mondial, mais détient aussi un monopole sur certains actifs économiques essentiels du football. Car une autre échéance importante approche : celle de l'élection du prochain président de la Fifa l'an prochain, à laquelle Infantino est candidat à sa propre succession... Absolument, et pour l'instant il est le seul candidat à sa succession, ce qui crée des problématiques sur l'opacité du fonctionnement organisationnel et sectoriel de la Fifa. Les candidats pour mettre à mal la candidature de Gianni Infantino, pour l'instant, ne se bousculent pas, et il bénéficie désormais de l'appui politique de Donald Trump. N'oublions pas que Gianni Infantino lui a attribué le premier prix Fifa de la paix, qui a fait également beaucoup de polémiques, quelques mois avant la Coupe du monde, surtout avec le conflit iranien. Cela pose des questions sur les liens politico-financiers entre l'entourage de Donald Trump et Gianni Infantino. N'oublions pas que Sepp Blatter, l'ancien président de la Fifa au début des années 2000, avait déclenché beaucoup de polémiques sur le plan de la corruption et sur le plan de la financiarisation privée. Mais là, on atteint encore un autre stade. À propos de ces liens entre Gianni Infantino et Donald Trump, selon des informations de presse, cette opération de vente à des acteurs privés de parts de la Coupe du monde inclurait des proches du président américain. L'arrêt de la Cour de justice de l'Union européenne a constitué un moment historique, parce que la Cour n'a pas donné raison au projet de Super Ligue, tout en rappelant que des organisations comme l'UEFA doivent respecter les principes du droit européen, de la concurrence et ne peuvent pas disposer d'un pouvoir discrétionnaire pour autoriser ou interdire des compétitions. Est-ce que cela va arriver désormais jusqu'au plan judiciaire supranational ? Si le projet est officialisé par un communiqué officiel de la Fifa, cela peut avoir des tournures très importantes, même sur le plan politico-judiciaire. Pensez-vous que cela peut donner lieu à des boycotts de la part de certaines sélections sur les prochaines compétitions ? C'est possible, mais malheureusement, le boycott d'une Coupe du monde – par exemple, la prochaine Coupe du monde 2030 – par des fédérations internationales ou des fédérations nationales serait extrêmement difficile. Parce que cette compétition possède une puissance symbolique et économique incomparable. Il y a également le sponsoring. Bonne nouvelle pour le Sénégal. Quinze supporters de l'équipe nationale de football, qui étaient en prison au Maroc, viennent d'être graciés par le roi Mohammed VI. Le président est allé les accueillir à l'aéroport de Dakar samedi soir. Bassirou Diomaye Faye est-il en train de miser sur le football pour remporter le match de la popularité contre Ousmane Sonko, le Premier ministre qu'il vient de limoger ce vendredi ? Abdoulaye Thiam est journaliste à Sud Quotidien et président de la section Afrique de l'Association internationale de la presse sportive. En ligne de Dakar, il répond à Christophe Boisbouvier. RFI : Dix équipes africaines à la Coupe du monde 2026, un record historique. Est-ce à dire que le football africain monte en puissance ? Abdoulaye Thiam : Absolument. On peut l'apprécier ainsi. Cela commence avec les exploits du Cameroun en 1990 – pour la première fois, une sélection africaine atteint les quarts de finale –, suivi du Sénégal en 2002, qui a réalisé la même performance. En 2010, le Ghana arrive jusqu'au stade des quarts de finale. En 2022, le Maroc réalise une performance XXL en rentrant dans le carré d'as. Le record historique de cette année correspond-il à de nouveaux investissements dans les infrastructures ou dans l'encadrement technique ? Oui, on peut prendre le cas du Maroc qui a fait un très grand bond en avant. Mais on peut parler aussi du projet « Goal », initié par Sepp Blatter, renforcé aujourd'hui par le projet « Forward », et qui a permis à de nombreuses fédérations africaines de disposer d'abord de sièges et, deuxièmement, d'utiliser cet argent pour se renforcer. Ce sont les centres de formation, pour reprendre encore le cas du Sénégal avec Génération Foot en 2000, mais aussi et surtout le centre Diambars qui a été installé par un ancien international français d'origine sénégalaise, Patrick Vieira. Aujourd'hui, les centres pullulent un peu partout en Afrique, aussi bien en Côte d'Ivoire, au Maroc qu'au Mali. Je crois que l'Afrique est en train de rattraper son retard par rapport à l'Occident. Pour les Lions du Sénégal, le contentieux avec la CAF et le Maroc, à la suite de la finale de la CAN en janvier dernier, ne risque-t-il pas de perturber les joueurs dans leur préparation ? Non, je ne le crois pas. Les Sénégalais ont compris que le jury d'appel de la CAF s'est trompé parce qu'il ne disposait pas d'une base légale pour pouvoir statuer. Mais la décision finale va revenir au Tribunal arbitral du sport. Elle n'est pas encore prise. En attendant, les Lions du Sénégal ne risquent-ils pas d'être déconcentrés dans leur préparation ? Non, je crois que les Sénégalais sont restés focus sur la Coupe du monde. On attendra effectivement après cette Coupe du monde, au mois d'août certainement – ou bien au mois de septembre, je ne sais pas exactement –, pour que le Tribunal arbitral du sport finisse par trancher cette question. Mais j'ose espérer que la décision ira dans le sens du jury disciplinaire, qui a déjà eu à trancher en premier ressort en sanctionnant le Sénégal. C'est la jurisprudence actuelle. C'est-à-dire que, quand une équipe refuse de jouer et finit par rejoindre le terrain, ce que l'on peut prendre comme sanction, c'est de sanctionner le sélectionneur. Il a reçu des sanctions, des joueurs sénégalais aussi ont reçu des sanctions. Cela devrait s'arrêter là, mais on ne peut pas retirer un trophée après avoir déjà remporté la Coupe d'Afrique des nations. Il y a eu une bonne nouvelle pour le Sénégal ce week-end, la grâce du roi du Maroc pour les quinze derniers supporters sénégalais qui étaient emprisonnés. La présence de Bassirou Diomaye Faye, samedi soir, à l'aéroport Blaise-Diagne de Diamniadio, pour accueillir les supporteurs libérés, est-elle le signe que le président veut mettre les Lions du Sénégal dans son camp, au moment où il vient de limoger son Premier ministre, Ousmane Sonko ? Non, je ne le vois pas ainsi. Je pense que, même si Ousmane Sonko était encore Premier ministre, rien ne s'opposerait à ce que le président de la République puisse se déplacer lui-même. Parce que la diplomatie sénégalaise avait été mise en branle. Aujourd'hui, c'est un apaisement des cœurs à la veille de la fête de l'Aïd. Tous les Sénégalais n'arrêtent pas de féliciter et de remercier encore Sa Majesté le Roi Mohammed VI pour cet acte d'une grande mansuétude. Mais de fait, la présence du président à l'arrivée des supporters ce week-end à Dakar, n'est-ce pas une façon pour Bassirou Diomaye Faye de s'attribuer le mérite de leur libération et donc de peser dans l'opinion face à Ousmane Sonko ? Je crois que, s'il le fait, c'est tout à fait normal et naturel. Je me souviendrai toujours de cette sortie du président Abdoulaye Wade qui disait à tout le monde : « J'ai misé sur l'équipe nationale du Sénégal et je récolte la mise. » On est en Afrique. On sait que dans tous les pays africains, l'équipe nationale, la sélection A, est une véritable vitrine. Quand il y a une performance, que ce soit au Sénégal ou ailleurs, il y a toujours le premier de cette nation, c'est-à-dire le chef de l'État, qui essaie de se mettre en avant pour communier avec son peuple. Je n'y vois pas un acte politique. Même si tel était le cas, je ne vois pas de problème par rapport à cela. Dans la compétition entre Bassirou Diomaye Faye et Ousmane Sonko pour avoir la plus grande popularité au Sénégal, peut-on dire que cette grâce royale tombe bien pour le président de la République ? Absolument. Cela tombe bien pour le président de la République de s'approprier une telle victoire diplomatique. C'est important parce que, comme vous le savez bien, depuis un certain temps au Sénégal, on constate qu'il y a eu beaucoup de défaites sur le plan international. On se souviendra toujours qu'au niveau de la Banque africaine de développement (BAD), c'est un Sénégalais qui n'a pas pu gagner [en 2025]. Les gens aussi ont remis sur la table la défaite d'Abdoulaye Bathily au niveau de la Commission de l'Union africaine [en 2017]. C'est important pour le chef de l'État, surtout dans un contexte politique actuel. C'est tout à fait normal qu'il monte au créneau pour communier avec son peuple en perspective de la Coupe du monde. Pour les Léopards du Congo, l'épidémie d'Ebola ne risque-t-elle pas de compliquer leur préparation, au moment où la Maison-Blanche veut imposer un isolement de trois semaines à la sélection congolaise ? Je ne vois pas en quoi les joueurs sont directement concernés. Ce sont tous des internationaux évoluant dans les championnats les plus huppés en Europe. Je ne vois pas en quoi ils sont concernés directement, d'autant plus que leur camp de base, qui devait avoir lieu à Kinshasa, a été annulé. Ils ne se déplacent pas au Congo, ils vont rester en Belgique. Je ne vois pas pourquoi ils mériteraient un tel traitement. Restez-vous optimiste pour leur venue aux États-Unis le 11 juin ? Oui, je pense qu'ils seront aux États-Unis. Ils viendront à Houston le 11 juin. J'ose espérer aussi qu'ils vont transformer cette situation en démonstration de force à la face du monde. Ce n'est pas un virus Ebola qui va les empêcher de démontrer à tout le monde que c'est une belle équipe qui mérite sa qualification à cette Coupe du monde. En tout cas, je leur fais confiance. J'espère que cela ne va pas affecter l'équipe nationale de la République démocratique du Congo. Le président de la CAF, Patrice Motsepe, croit à la victoire d'une équipe nationale africaine à la Coupe du monde 2026. Y croyez-vous aussi ou pas ? Il n'est pas le seul à y croire. Moi j'y crois. J'ai rappelé le retard que l'Afrique est en train de rattraper par rapport à l'Europe. Il y a beaucoup plus de rigueur. Les fédérations maîtrisent aujourd'hui la haute compétition. Les États ne lésinent pas sur les moyens pour mettre les sélections africaines dans d'excellentes conditions de performance et de séjour. Le Maroc a réussi à rentrer dans le carré, c'est-à-dire les demi-finales, avant son élimination contre la France [en 2022]. À l'époque, nous avions cinq équipes. Nous en avons dix et non des moindres. Je pense que, pas uniquement une seule équipe africaine, mais deux, voire trois, pourraient même atteindre les demi-finales et pourquoi pas monter sur la plus haute marche du podium au soir du 19 juillet dans le New Jersey. Then FIFA President Joao Havelange and Vice President Sepp Blatter accepted the challenge, although it did take some time.Within two years FIFA staged a Women's Invitational Event, and still not ready to call it a FIFA World Cup in 1991, the Women's FIFA World Championship for Women's Football for the M&M's Cup took place.
