Ice agents on the streets, travel bans: Should the US host the World Cup?

For Alexander Abnos, senior sports editor at the Guardian US “removing the US as World Cup host would be eminently sad – and entirely justified”.The 2026 Fifa World Cup will be hosted this summer by Mexico, Canada and the US.But the killings by Ice agents of US citizens and their intimidatory presence on city streets has been well reported globally which may make travelling fans nervous. And that's if they get in at all: the US president Donald Trump has imposed travel bans on several countries – including Senegal and Ivory Coast which have qualified to play. And then there is the stratospherically high price of stadium tickets which make going to the game prohibitively expensive. In January, former Fifa president Sepp Blatter supported calls by Swiss anti-corruption lawyer Mark Pieth for fans to boycott matches taking place in the US. But calls for boycotts of big sporting events are not unusual. They were loud before the last World Cup in Qatar but didn't make much of an impression.Abnos explains why a US boycott won't happen.Presented by Bernice Harrison. Produced by John Casey. The World Cup is a sporting competition between national football teams to determine the best of them. But it's always been a vessel for so much more, not least the ambitions of political leaders ranging from the mildly ethical to the downright evil. Host countries want to tell a story about themselves on the global stage, the winners make the case for their own national greatness, and there are a million more stories around this famous tournament that nobody planned for.A new book from Jonathan Wilson — columnist for The Guardian, co-host of the Libero podcast, and esteemed local Substacker — seeks to tell the very best tales from nearly 100 years of World Cup football. The Power and the Glory: The History of the World Cup is a delightful read, full of sharp insight and laugh-out-loud moments. From Benito Mussolini's bonus trophy for the 1934 World Cup winners — the Coppa del Duce — to the inside story of France's disastrous 2010 World Cup, to the insidious inner workings of FIFA in the modern era, it's all there.Wilson joins the show this week to talk a little Premier League title race before we get into his book, the latest edition of the World Cup next summer, why Gianni Infantino's reign as FIFA chief makes us all pine for the days of Sepp Blatter, and a whole lot more.Go get your copy of The Power and the Glory after you've had a listen here!Get more sharp coverage of the world's game at TheFootballWeekend.com ↗️ Hosted on Acast.

Hear the untold story of how a science teacher from Oslo made a speech that would change the future of women's football. In 1986, Ellen Wille became the first female to speak at a FIFA Congress and in a room full of men demanded women should have a FIFA World Cup and play football at the Olympics. Then FIFA President Joao Havelange and Vice President Sepp Blatter accepted the challenge, although it did take some time.Within two years FIFA staged a Women's Invitational Event, and still not ready to call it a FIFA World Cup in 1991, the Women's FIFA World Championship for Women's Football for the M&M's Cup took place. That's not easy to say! Finally – although it took nine years – in 1995 Sweden hosted the first FIFA Women's World Cup and, significantly for Ellen, it was her home nation Norway who lifted the trophy.Caroline Barker went to Oslo to track down Ellen Wille. She speaks to former president of the Football Association of Norway, Per Ravn Omdal; current President Lise Klaveness; and Norway's 1995 World Cup winners Hege Riise and Linda Meladen.Presented by Caroline BarkerProduced by Sophia Hartley for the BBC World ServicePhoto: Ellen Wille speaking to the BBC World Service (Credit: BBC)

Learn more about your ad choices. With the World Cup ongoing, I chat to Miles Coleman, the writer and producer of FIFA Uncovered – a four part documentary series available now on Netflix. We chat about the origins of both the film itself and FIFA as an organisation, as well as decisions that were made and moments which set it on a course to corruption. We also discuss some of the key figures, including Joao Havelange and the man who followed him, Sepp Blatter; the culture inside FIFA and how football decisions are made; whether anything can or will change; and lots more.Follow Miles @milescoleman92Get extra bonus content and help support Arseblog by becoming an Arseblog Member on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/arseblog Hosted on Acast. On this edition of Parallax Views, we have a double feature edition of Parallax Views on the 2022 FIFA World Cup being held in Qatar. First up, filmmaker Miles Coleman joins us to discuss the new Netflix docu-series that's sweeping the internet, FIFA Uncovered. Miles served as a producer for this sports-meets-politics-true-crime exploration of FIFA, international governing body of football/soccer. It's a dive into a world of schemes, bribes, scandals, and corruptions that even led U.S. federal prosecutors to take on FIFA in 2015. In this conversation we'll discuss the controversies surrounding the Qatar World Cup, the Citizen Kane-esque tale of former FIFA President Joseph "Sepp" Blatter, the scandalous downfall of Qatari football administrator Mohammad bin Hamman, how the documentary came together, capitalism/money in sports and the problems it poses, how the real scandal is arguably more about FIFA than Qatar, sportswashing, the argument that cultural exchange will liberalize countries under the rule of authoritarian regimes, the Qatari perspective on the backlash against their hosting of the 2022 World Cup, the ambiguities and murkier elements of the scandalous history explored in FIFA Uncovered, smoking gun evidence of corruption vs. lack of smoking gun evidence for corruption in the world of FIFA, the cross-section between politics and sports, how the ambitious Sepp Blatter's hunger for power was arguably the cause of his undoing, Argentina and the World Cup scandal of 1978, Berlin and the scandal of the 1936 Olympics, South Africa and FIFA, and much, much more! In the second segment of the show, Prof. James M. Dorsey, author of The Turbulent World of Middle East Soccer and it's accompanying blog/podcast, joins us to discuss his take on the controversial Qatar World Cup. Prof. Dorsey argues that Qatar's interest in hosting the World Cup has to do with their soft power approach to foreign policy. Additionally we discuss covert information warfare by Gulf States like the United Arab Emirates (UAE) against Qatar, whether Qatar will follow through on reforms, the human/labor/LGBTQ+ allegations against Qatar, migrant labor and Qatar, the question of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and bribery, Qatar's reaction to the backlash against it's hosting the World Cup, the question Western racism against Qatar, the argument for there being double standards at play in the backlash against Qatar, human rights abuses in the  Gulf States more broadly, regional tensions and the World Cups (ie: Qatar, Israel,, Saudi Arabia, and Iran), understanding the Qatari perspective on the 2022 World Cup controversy, the multipolar world and the rise of China and India, and much, much more!
