In 1993, a new African nation emerged from decades of armed struggle: the state of Eritrea. Situated on the Red Sea, this young republic has spent the last 30 years building sovereignty and self-reliance in a world determined to undermine it. A nation that rejected World Bank ‘conditionalities' and wrote its own development programme. A nation which understands that you cannot build sovereignty while taking orders from those who colonised you. The film doesn't shy away from the hard questions. Why does Eritrea have ‘such bad press'? Why do the same media outlets that cheerlead for every imperialist intervention suddenly discover ‘human rights concerns' when a country says ‘No' to foreign bases and resource extraction? The answer, as one interviewee puts it, lies in understanding who pays the journalists and whom they serve. This is not propaganda. This is solidarity: listening to people tell their own story, in their own words, about what it took to win independence and what it takes to keep it. The US wants to dictate to the world what is the correct and incorrect way of living and governing a country from the perspective which serves their imperialist interests. When a country seeks to be independent, free of plunder, and to develop without interference, the U.S. is trigger-happy to label these countries undemocratic and dictatorships. Despite some theatre for the benefit of domestic populations, there is no serious dispute in the Anglo-American camp over the aims and methods of US imperialism. Diego Garcia's strategic location in the Indian Ocean, with access to south Asia, east Africa, and the middle east, is more than enough reason for the imperialists' illegal turfing out of locals and establishment of a powerful military base there. In this powerful first-hand account, journalist Steve Sweeney describes surviving a deliberate Israeli airstrike that targeted him and his colleague while reporting for RT News in south Lebanon – a targeted attack on journalists that can only be described as a war crime. The attempt on Comrade Sweeney's life was unsuccessful, but left him with a shrapnel wound through his left arm, and Steve explains exactly why he believes Israel knew who and where they were. He and his crew were filming at the destroyed Kazmiyeh Bridge, in full view of a Lebanese military post whose occupants had cleared them for filming. This week I spoke with Garland Nixon about the war in Iran and what it means not only for Iran but for the wider region and the entire world. What have we learned about the difference in the ways the imperialist and anti-imperialist countries approach war? We discussed the fact that Iran has for decades held off using its real nuclear option: domination of the Hormuz strait. The fact that is it using it now shows that the war that it knew would eventually be forced upon it has finally arrived. And for Iran it is existential, and the outcomes it is fighting for are non-negotiable. We compared Iran's objectives fighting Nato and the Zionist proxies with Russia's in its fight against Nato and the Banderite proxies, and noted that they are almost the same: removal of military threats against the country; removal of fascist proxies on the doorstep; acceptance of the country's sovereign right to determine its own affairs in peace; reparations. Meanwhile, despite a bit of ‘hesitation' (partly owing to genuine disputes about how to proceed and partly for public consumption), the rest of the imperialist camp is ultimately going all-in on the USA's war against Iran. Because they know that their economic system is on the verge of total meltdown, and war is their only possible salvation. And they also know that they will ultimately stand or fall as one. Those of us who live in the imperialist countries need to be doing everything possible to organise a real anti-imperialist mass movement here at home. Iran, Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen, Russia, the Sahel states, Venezuela, Cuba are all on the front lines of this war, sacrificing their lives in the fight against our common class enemies. The imperialists are preparing the ground for war in the Pacific, but their plans rely on the acquiescence of the region's people. Separatist sentiment in Taiwan has seen a marked decline recently, where increasing numbers of workers are waking up to the danger that they are being prepared to be the ‘Ukrainians' of the east – ie, to be sacrificed on the altar of profit-hungry capital.
