GDP Script/ Top Stories for November 13th Publish Date: November 13th PRE-ROLL: SUGAR HILL ICE SKATING From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Thursday, November 13th and Happy birthday to Steve Zahn I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia. Fernbank celebrates holidays with 'Winter Wonderland' exhibit Salvation Army to kick off Red Kettle Campaign on Friday Atlanta awarded NWSL franchise that may call Marietta home Plus, Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on pesticides All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: STRAND THEATRE STORY 1: Fernbank celebrates holidays with 'Winter Wonderland' exhibit Fernbank’s “Winter Wonderland” is back, running Nov. 22, through Jan. 11—and honestly, it’s kind of magical. Picture this: two floors packed with dazzling trees and displays, each one telling a story about how different cultures celebrate the season. Japan, Kenya, Scotland, Guatemala—just a few of the countries featured. It’s not just pretty lights, either. There’s a scavenger hunt (yes, for adults too) where you can hunt for ornaments and hidden treasures. Oh, and if you’re into nighttime vibes, check out WildWoods: AGLOW. Tickets? $25.95 for adults, cheaper for kids. Go online to snag them early—prices jump at the door. STORY 2: Salvation Army to kick off Red Kettle Campaign on Friday  Starting this Friday, the Salvation Army of Gwinnett County kicks off its Red Kettle Campaign—you know, those little red kettles and the cheerful bell ringers? They’ll be at 49 spots around the county, raising money to help folks in need. The goal this year? $150,000 by Christmas Eve. And it’s not just about the holidays. Last year, they served over 6,000 meals, gave 2,700+ nights of shelter, and helped hundreds of families with rent, utilities, and gifts for their kids. Want to help? Ring a bell or start a virtual kettle. Every penny stays local. Details at salvationarmygwinnett.org. STORY 3: Atlanta awarded NWSL franchise that may call Marietta home   Arthur Blank’s bringing pro women’s soccer to Atlanta—finally. On Tuesday, he announced he’s snagged the rights for an NWSL expansion team, shelling out a record $165 million. The team kicks off in 2028, playing home games at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Blank’s already talking about a “world-class” training facility, and Marietta’s making its pitch hard. Mayor Steve Tumlin’s ready to pull out all the stops, even eyeing shovel-ready land near Atlanta United’s training ground. Atlanta’s soccer scene is booming—United, the U.S. Soccer Training Center, and now this. Blank’s betting big, and honestly? It feels like a win. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: 07.14.22 KIA MOG STORY 4: Gwinnett honors service members during Veterans Day Ceremony   Veterans Day isn’t about sales or shopping sprees—at least, it shouldn’t be. Retired Army Sgt. Maj. Kerry Dyer reminded everyone of that during Gwinnett County’s ceremony this week. “It’s a day for gratitude,” he said, standing before a crowd of veterans spanning generations, from Korea to the Gulf. “Not just for battles fought, but for lives lived in service.” Gwinnett, home to over 30,000 veterans, pulled out all the stops—marches, music, and heartfelt speeches. Judge Shawn Bratton called the turnout “unspeakably touching.” And with new veteran resource centers on the way, the county’s commitment feels real. Two words: thank you. STORY 5: Georgia Gwinnett College students dive into environmental science during inaugural Gwinnett River Rendezvous event Georgia Gwinnett College just pulled off something pretty cool—the first-ever Gwinnett River Rendezvous. Picture this: students, faculty, and volunteers fanning out across the county, collecting water samples from rivers and streams, then testing them back on campus for things like bacteria and turbidity. It wasn’t just science—it was hands-on, messy, real-world learning. For sophomore Andreas Forbes, it was a first. “I’m an environmental science major, but I hadn’t done anything like this before,” he said. “It felt real.” The data? It’s going straight to Gwinnett Water Resources to help track contamination. And GGC? They’re already planning next year’s rendezvous. We’ll be right back. Break 3: THE SUGAR HILL HOLIDAY And now here is Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on pesticides Break 4: We’ll have closing comments after this Break 5: Ingles Markets 5 Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today’s Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. When the temperature drops and snowflakes start to fall, many assume that local parks and recreation departments take a well-deserved break. However, as Valley Today host Janet Michael discovers in her lively conversation with Jeremy Sanders, Marketing Manager for Frederick County Parks and Recreation, winter is anything but a slow season. Instead, the department ramps up its offerings, ensuring that residents of all ages have plenty of opportunities to stay active, engaged, and connected. The Winter Guide: A Treasure Trove of Activities At the heart of their conversation is the newly released Winter Guide, available both online and soon in print. This comprehensive resource is packed with information about upcoming races, trips, crafting workshops, and sports leagues. Jeremy emphasizes that the guide is designed to appeal to a wide range of interests, from seniors looking for social activities to families seeking ways to get out of the house during the colder months. Notably, the guide also highlights job opportunities for teens and young adults, providing a gateway into the world of parks and recreation. Signature Events: From Turkey Trots to Winter Wonderland Transitioning from the guide's overview, Janet and Jeremy dive into some of the season's most anticipated events. The Thanksgiving Day 5K, a beloved local tradition, has grown so popular that it sold out last year, prompting organizers to raise the participation cap for this year's race. Jeremy shares the behind-the-scenes logistics of managing such a large event, from volunteer coordination to ensuring enough t-shirts and medals for all runners. The race isn't just for adults—kids can join in the fun with their own "tot trot," making it a true family affair. Following Thanksgiving, the excitement continues with Winter Wonderland at Clearbrook Park, now celebrating its 25th anniversary. This walk-through light display features festive activities, food trucks, live music, and even pony rides. Jeremy notes that the event has evolved to include selfie stations and crafting opportunities, ensuring that there's something for everyone, whether you have young children or are simply young at heart. Community Input and Creative Programming One of the most engaging aspects of the conversation is the discussion about how new programs are developed. Jeremy reveals that many ideas originate from staff members' personal interests or from suggestions by community members. For example, after attending a conference, Jeremy was inspired to introduce "letterboxing," a creative outdoor activity similar to geocaching, to the local parks. This openness to innovation ensures that the department's offerings remain fresh and relevant. Trips, Tours, and Togetherness Beyond local events, Frederick County Parks & Rec organizes a variety of trips throughout the winter. Whether it's a bus ride to a Penn State football game, a shopping excursion to New York City, or a visit to the Polar Express Ice Show, these outings provide residents with hassle-free ways to explore new places and make new friends. Janet and Jeremy both agree that the camaraderie of group travel adds an extra layer of enjoyment to these experiences. Staying Informed and Getting Involved To keep the community informed, the department offers an email newsletter, the "Rec Reminder," which highlights upcoming deadlines and new programs. Registration for events and activities is streamlined through the department's website, making it easy for residents to sign up and even add events directly to their digital calendars. Looking Ahead: A Season of Connection As the conversation wraps up, Janet and Jeremy reflect on the importance of community, tradition, and adaptability. Whether you're lacing up your sneakers for a 5K, crafting a holiday wreath, or simply enjoying a stroll through Winter Wonderland, Frederick County Parks & Rec ensures that winter is a season to remember. With a blend of beloved traditions and innovative new offerings, the department continues to bring people together—proving that, in Frederick County, the fun never freezes.

What's up, dudes? They're a legendary metal band whose songs were played all the time on MTV. Yes, we're talking Stryper! I've got the incredible Michael Sweet with me to talk about their 1984 singles “Reason for the Season” and “Winter Wonderland!” We also dive into their new album The Greatest Gift of All available this year in November. The boys lay down an eighth note riff in “Reason for the Season,” and modulate for the chorus. The song is full of their dual lead guitar, harmonized in 3rds for texture and interest. After coming to a rocked out climax, it ends with harmonics and acoustic and clean tone electrics. The tight vocal pads give an ethereal feeling contrasting with the previous heavy straightforward rock vibe.Released in December ‘84, the single had a Stryperized version of the classic “Winter Wonderland” as a B-side. This time the band gave the song a swing eighth-triplet riff. After some introductory dialogue, they launch into it, and segue nicely into a triplet dual lead solo. Uniquely, a turnaround transitions to an Elvis inspired bluesy half time rendition of the chorus. And now, this year the band has a new Christmas album! Stryper The Greatest Gift of All is full of classics and original tunes. From a lush and calming “Silent Night” to an uptempo “Joy to the World,” it has it all. The album even ends with re-recordings of their two ‘80s singles, updating them sonically and ending with a bang!Guitar? Check. Soaring vocals? Yep. Full on Stryper vibes? Definitely! What's up, dudes? It was a special based on a seminal album of the ‘80s holiday seasons! Yes, Ken Kessler from Sounds of Christmas and Scott Leopold from Holly Jolly X'masu are with me to talk “A Very Special Christmas Party." Arnold Schwarzenegger, Danny DeVito, and more celebrate with Olympians.Unfortunately, the beginning is cut off, so it's unclear how the special started. Arnold and some Olympians discuss his singing, and  Barbara Mandrell recounts playing soccer, talking to a 50m freestyle swimming gold medalist. Next, DeVito and Arnold work out with some athletes. Randy Travis then tells us he thinks of food at Christmastide and sings "Winter Wonderland."Immediately following that, Susan Saint James tells us of Mark Arrowood kindness, and Mike Tyson talks basketball. Scott Hamilton and an Olympian ice skate together, and we see the entire group in church for a special reading by JFK, Jr. Finally, at dinner, everyone goes around the table lighting a candle representing their Christmas wish. Oh, and Santa shows up!"Silent Night?" Check. "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town?" Got it. Actual songs from the album? Nope. Not really. So grab your sweater, light a candle, and make wish to this episode on  “A Very Special Christmas Party!"  Sounds of ChristmasFB: @SOCMusicTwitter: @SOCMusicIG: @socmusicHolly Jolly X'masuFB: @HollyJollyXmasuTwitter: @HollyJollyXmasuIG: @hollyjollyxmasuGive us a buzz! Send us a textTaking a leap of faith and diving into full-time creative entrepreneurship marks the beginning of this raw, honest conversation about pursuing your passions. After leaving a steady paycheck behind, I've jumped headfirst into running my art studio full-time and launching my very first children's art camps. The joy of watching toddlers discover art materials for the first time has been nothing short of magical. These little ones arrive each morning bursting with excitement, ready to sculpt self-portraits in air-dry clay, adding new elements daily from facial features to personal touches reflecting their interests. Though smaller than anticipated, this intimate group has created the perfect environment for genuine creative exploration. The ripple effects extend beyond our studio sessions, with parents reporting hours of continued artistic play at home. What's truly surprised me is how far people will travel for authentic creative experiences. Students drive from counties away to participate in workshops, families plan special trips centered around visiting the studio, and social media connections bring in new creatives seeking community. This widespread interest has validated my decision in unexpected ways, as has being selected as an animator for Toronto's Winter Wonderland exhibit and being invited to speak about establishing yourself as an artist. These opportunities simply weren't possible when my energy was divided. The transition hasn't been without challenges - it's simultaneously "scary and exhilarating and demanding and stressful" - but the fulfillment outweighs the fear. If you've been hesitating to pursue your own creative calling, consider this your sign to take that first step. Even dedicating just a few minutes daily to what you love can nurture that passion and potentially transform your life. Life truly is too short to postpone joy. What a bright time, it's the right time, for Baconsale to discuss Christmas music again. It seems that every classic holiday song has been covered hundreds of times, but on this episode, Joel, Kent, and Zack have whittled that down to three popular versions of 25 iconic songs, including "Jingle Bell Rock," "Let It Snow," "O Holy Night," "Sleigh Ride," “Here Comes Santa Claus,” and "Winter Wonderland." We're going to debate each tree-o of tunes and decide which one should be the default on your smart speaker. We'll also talk in parentheses, break some triple ties, and bare some bias about Bing and Bublé.   Beware of Big Gulps making mouth sounds after you press play.   You can also find the Spotify playlist of all the Christmas cover song candidates we bring up on this episode at Baconsale.com.

It's Thanksgiving week in the United States, which means capitalism! We're skipping (mainly) the talk of the midnight electronics runs, and heading straight to Small Business Saturday, when your local independent bookseller is doing their very best to put great books in your hands. Ever been in your local bookstore and thought -- I wish this place was the setting of a romance novel? We've got you, friends. We talk about the magic of bookstores, about the importance of small businesses, about bookshops as sites for revolution, and about the appeal of running your own little shop around the corner. And we recommend a bunch of books that are...honestly? Charming AF. Want more indie bookstore content? Support some booksellers at a bookstore we really love by purchasing the Fated Mates Best of 2024 Book Pack from our friends at Pocket Books Shop in Lancaster, PA. Hour 1 Daniel Jones essentially said goodbye to Giants fans and Rex Ryan went on ESPN Radio and really, really wants the Jets job. We talked about what Rex would be like if he returned. Gio wouldn't do it as he thinks it feels pathetic to go back to when you last felt good about the team. Boomer said there are going to be 6 head coaching jobs open and Boomer expects Rob Saleh to get some interviews. Boomer would consider re-hiring Rex, but he wants to see who the other candidates are. Jerry is here for his first update of the day and starts with the sounds of the Browns beating the Steelers in the snow. Daniel Jones read a prepared statement to the press expressing his gratitude. Jerry has audio of Rex Ryan saying he's ‘all about the Jets' and ‘nobody's better than me'. Aaron Judge won the A.L. MVP. In the final segment of the hour, Stu Feiner wants to wear the ball-hammock underwear on stage with nothing else on. We declined. We talk about past B&G Live events as we get ready for our show at the Paramount tonight. Hour 2 News 12 Long Island did a piece on the live show we're doing tonight at the Paramount. We got into the Daniel Jones situation. He met the media yesterday and read a prepared piece where he was thanking the fans and the Giants for the opportunity. He did get emotional, which we've never seen before from him. We talked about the frustration Brian Daboll was clearly feeling in some of these games because of Jones' play. We talked about the NFL draft and who the Giants could get at quarterback. Jerry returns for an update and starts with the sounds of the Browns beating the Steelers in a ‘Winter Wonderland in Cleveland'. Jerry has audio of Daniel Jones talking about not playing well enough and understanding why the Giants made the move. Gronk wants Jon Gruden for the Jets. Aaron Judge won the A.L. MVP and thanked Juan Soto. In the final segment of the hour, Jason Kelce ran into another moron looking for an autograph that was just a total turd (the autograph seeker). Hour 3 We started with audio from 2014 when Rex Ryan sat down with Andrea Kramer and said that Woody wanted him to be the head coach for 25 years, but you couldn't bring another GM to work with him. As far as Jon Gruden goes, it seems like there will be other teams interested in him, so he will not go to the Jets. Gio called the Jets, a ‘cesspool of an organization'. Boomer disagreed with that. Dr. Joe calls in. He's the guy who told us back in June that Dave Sims was getting the Yankees job. He said Suzyn Waldman threw the name out there. He called back to apologize to, I think, Suzyn. He said she has cut him out of her life. Jerry returns for an update and has the audio from the moron harassing Jason Kelce as he was leaving the Jimmy Kimmel Show. Chad Ochocinco couldn't believe how boring the NFL has been until the 4th quarter hits. Jerry has audio of Daniel Jones reading his statement on how things have gone with the Giants. In the final segment of the hour, we talked about the farce that was the Tyson/Paul fight. Hour 4 Malik Nabers said that Brian Daboll told him Tommy DeVito will get the ball right where it needs to be so he better be ready as soon as he makes the cut on his route. We expect the Bucs to blitz DeVito a lot. Sam Darnold will most likely be available next season. Jerry returns for his final update of the day, but first, Chuck Scarborough is stepping down after 50 years at WNBC. Jerry starts with the Browns beating the Steelers in the snow and Jameis Winston was so into it. Daniel Jones basically said goodbye to the Giants when he met the media. Sterling Shepard is looking forward to playing in MetLife again and seeing the Giants and the fans. Rex Ryan was on ESPN radio, pushing for the Jets job. The Moment of The Day: John Minko is at Baha Mar for St. John's, in his underwear. In the final segment of the week, our NFL picks!
