Episode 133. We watched M. Night Shyamalan's trilogy of unconventional superhero thrillers, Unbreakable (2000), Split (2017), and Glass (2019). Security guard David Dunn is the sole survivor of a massively fatal train crash who realizes he isn't just lucky, he's invulnerable, and he's always felt a duty to protect the people of Philadelphia. Art curator Elijah Price was born with terribly fragile bones, unsure of why he exists in this world, but sure that comic books have a core of truth to them and that superheroes and villains must be real. Kevin Wendell Crumb is a man with multiple identities taking over his life, fighting for control, and convinced that he contains a secret identity with beast-like strength and ferocity. What does the converging of these men mean for truth, justice, and humanity itself? The Whatnauts present The Review Show, a weekly book club style podcast for all sorts of pop culture. We cover a variety of genres and mediums — movies, TV shows, comics, anime, manga, audio dramas — picking out a specific piece of entertainment that we can cover in a week's time. Every episode, your intrepid co-hosts Kyle and Melissa dive into the media of the week (with a spoiler warning!), give recommendations, and take turns pitching the next topic. For one episode a month, we check in with continuing coverage on a longer title, like a full TV series or comics run, and follow it all the way to the end. Robbie Martin starts the episode having a discussion with fellow podcaster Leslie Lee III of Struggle Session about the ‘Disneyfication’ of pop culture and why Disney absorbing the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars is actually a bad thing for the future of entertainment culture. They also discuss the current state of super hero films dominating Hollywood and movie critics being brainwashed into loving them, especially ones released by Disney. In the second half of the episode Abby Martin joins Leslie and Robbie for a long form analysis of the Unbreakable trilogy by M. Night Shyamalan leading into an in-depth review of the last installment in the trilogy: ‘Glass’. Abby, Robbie and Leslie conclude with the question: did M. Night Shyamalan make the best super hero film (Unbreakable) and best super hero trilogy of all-time on a far lower budget than Marvel Studios?
