Pete Wright hosts a brutally personal Mother's Day episode of Sitting in the Dark, joined by regular co-conspirators Kyle Olson, Kynan Dias, and Tommy Metz III, as they dig into three films that ask a profoundly unsettling question: What if Mom is the monster? We start with Run (2020), a film that's more “Lifetime original” than it has any right to be. It's clean, tight, and distressingly effective. Sarah Paulson's performance is terrifying not because she twirls her mustache but because she doesn't have one. And newcomer Kiera Allen rolls (yes, rolls) away with the movie by doing exactly what her character does best—staying two clever steps ahead.Next, Goodnight Mommy (2014). Austrian, austere, and absolutely harrowing. It's a film about maternal misrecognition, grief-fueled delusion, and the dangers of not labeling your twins' toothbrushes. There's a twist, and if you see it coming, that won't make the third act any less of a gut punch. It's what happens when grief curdles, and no one's left to explain bedtime. And then: mother! (2017). Darren Aronofsky's symphonic descent into allegorical madness. Sure, it's “about” the Bible. It's also about climate change. It's about patriarchy, artistic ego, and the cosmic price of hospitality. Or maybe it's just a guy on a cocaine bender writing a play he'll never finish. Whether you think it's pretentious or profound (hint: it's both), one thing is clear—Jennifer Lawrence earns every ounce of your attention and maybe a few gallons of blood.Across these three films, the panel explores how motherhood in horror isn't just about nurture gone wrong. It's about architecture—both of the home and the psyche. It's about women who are worshipped, consumed, blamed, and erased. And yes, sometimes it's about cockroaches.Films Discussed:Run (2020) – dir. It's the whirlwind tour of the US that we've all been hanging out for, now it's time for Em and Michael to drop all the details on their most eventful holiday EVER! We begin with the original reason for the tour, Em's tour of the Pixar Studios in San Francisco for their upcoming animated film ‘Elio', in which Em voices the character of “Female Co-Worker A”. From touring the Pixar Cafe and sampling their world famous bacon, through to meeting the women who helped create the movie and talking Australian birds and spiders with one of the movie's animators, it was easily a lifetime achievement for Em. Then we get to hear Michael recount his side of their night on Broadway watching Sarah Snook in ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray' and hanging with icons Glenn Close, Sarah Paulson, Rob Lowe, Gayle King and Jackie Weaver. There's also dinner at Taylor Swift's favourite Italian restaurant, and their night witnessing Andrew Scott (the hot priest from ‘Fleabag') singing Broadway tunes and holding Chella's hand. Then in our Sealed Section, on our premium service Emsolation Extra, Em and Michael discuss their night at Beyonce's Cowboy Carter tour, plus there's other bonus material too saucy for our main episode! Dennis is joined via Zoom by writer for Part 2 of their conversation about Paul's new novel What Is Wrong With You? as well as his previous novel Farrell Covington and the Limits of Style, both of which offer readers sides of Rudnick they haven't seen before. In Part 2, Paul talks about the raw rage and freedom he felt while writing Farrell alone in a room during the pandemic, the lost gay Koch brother who loosely inspired the book and his early 20's club days in NYC, dancing the night away at Studio 54 and Paradise Garage, both of which are featured in Farrell. He also talks about why enjoys posting on Twitter, the post he wrote that went the most viral and why he can't resist cracking wise about MAGA gals Lara Trump, MTG, Kari Lake and Kristi Noem. He also recalls making Coastal Elites for HBO during lookdown with actors like Bette Midler and Sarah Paulson performing over Zoom in their own homes. Other topics include: the odd jobs he worked when he first came to NYC, how he's kept going through all of the ups and downs of a creative career, making deals with God to get laughs from the audience during his early playwrighting days and how his premier magazine alter ego Libby Gelman-Waxner once fielded a sincere marriage proposal from a besotted reader. Julian, Madeline, and Emilio kick off their "Holiday Suggestion Box" episode cycle by discussing "Carol" (2015), the great Christmastime-set queer romance directed by Todd Haynes, holding up his title as the most-covered director on the podcast. A re-watch for Madeline and Julian and a first-time viewing for Emilio, the group discuss such topics as the film's status as an adaptation (of Patricia Highsmith's "The Price of Salt"), why it works as a holiday movie, and its balance of finely tuned 1950s period detail and the timeless appeal of its love story. Additionally, utilizing their refined attention to Todd Haynes' distinct touches as a director, Madeline praises the film's affecting portrayals of complex female characters, Emilio touches on Haynes' delicacy with varied male archetypes, and Julian points out some highlight moments of the film's subtly expressive visual language. If you enjoy our podcast, please rate and review us on your podcast platform of choice. In this bonus edition of The Pod Charles Cinecast, we reach the end game of our two ongoing side ventures – BRUCE WILLS US: A Pod Charles Cinecast Brucie Bonus, where we've been looking at some of our favourite films from Bruce Willis every once in a while on the main timeline, and SHYAMALAMANIA, where we've been charting the films of M. Night Shyamalan in special Patreon exclusives.Join hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas, as they head back to Philadelphia to see how their favourite a former football player turn invincible security guard, David Dunn, is doing, after spending the last near 20 years honing his real-life superhero powers. But first, the boys must meet the Beast! That's because in 2016, M. Night delivered, probably, the first ever "stealth sequel" and first ever supervillain origin story in one package with SPLIT. James McAvoy stars as Kevin, a man with dissociative identity disorder who kidnaps and imprisons three teenage girls (one of which is Anya Taylor-Joy) in an isolated underground facility. The film might have pissed off some people in the mental health community, but it marked a true return to form for M. Night, where he captivated audiences with a truly gripping story, featuring McAvoy in one of his career best performances. Then, M. Night shattered our brains by placing a Bruce Willis as David Dunn cameo at the end of this what felt like a standalone story, making it part two in the Unbreakable Universe aka the Eastrail 177 Trilogy. M. Night would follow up with GLASS in 2019, bringing back David Dunn (Willis), who is on the lookout for a super strong man known as the Beast (McAvoy). After their initial encounter, both men are arrested and sent to a psychiatric hospital, where a doctor (Sarah Paulson) attempts to convince them their "powers" are just in their heads. However, Elijah Price aka Mr. Glass, the returning Samuel L. Jackson, is also a patient in this facility, and has other plans for his superhero brethren. We end where we began with this double episode, and as always there is some clunky writing, bad acting, a few silly twists, with a pinch of Biblical references and potential allusions to M. Night's career – all the ingredients that make an M. Night film great. "This was an origin story the whole time." If you enjoy the podcast, leave a Rating and Review! It really helps us out! Hey, gang! There were some delivery problems this week, so we only have one new movie on the docket: MONKEY MAN! (Just kidding. That's on Patreon. Patrons can listen to that episode here.) No, this week we cover the new Dust Bowl psychological drama/horror flick HOLD YOUR BREATH (2:22), starring Sarah Paulson as a woman living through the Dust Bowl (natch) and kind of losing her mind because of some maybe-it's-real-maybe-not-tee-hee specter called The Grey Man who lives in the dust. Sound like a concept ripe for horror? No? Ya ain't wrong! We're not going to lie: We didn't like this one and we go off the rails talking about it because why not? Also making an appearance this week: The Bikini Inspector! (We weren't kidding about going off the rails, or as the Monkey Man whould say, going bananas.) Enjoy! We did!

"Can you imagine if the air was just filled with dust particles and you literally could not breathe?" That's what Sarah Paulson is tackling in her new film Hold Your Breath (October 3). Paulson plays Margaret, a Dust Bowl-era mother who's slowly descending into madness after being plagued by a perceived spirit. "The moment you're confronted with a larger problem, like Margaret is, that very tightly coiled survival tactic quickly just unwinds itself." After a series of performances where Paulson has played women descending into madness, she admits it can take its toll. "There are plenty of actors who just run screaming, and then go sit down and write an email. I'm not that person.... Your brain knows you're pretending, but your body doesn't. The body keeps score." There's a chance Paulson will be able to take a break from trauma in Ryan Murphy's upcoming legal drama All's Fair starring Kim Kardashian, Glenn Close and Naomi Watts. "It's an embarrassment of riches, really. You want to pay me to go to work, quote, unquote, with the legend that is Glenn Close?"See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

[REBROADCAST FROM JAN. 9, 2024] In the Broadway staging of Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' Obie-winning play "Appropriate," Sarah Paulson stars as Toni, a woman dealing with the fallout from a gruesome discovery among her late father's things. Toni and her brothers, who are cleaning out the old family plantation home, must decide what to do with this explosive artifact. Jacobs-Jenkins, Paulson, and director Lila Neugebauer join us to discuss the show.
Six Broadway standouts — nominated for 'Mary Jane,' 'Days of Wine and Roses,' 'Purlie Victorious,' 'Appropriate,' 'Merrily We Roll Along' and 'Cabaret,' respectively — discuss their paths to the Great White Way, the challenges and rewards of the parts for which they're nominated this year, what audience members do that most annoys them, plus more. Ten years after its original staging, “Appropriate” has received eight Tony Award nominations. Playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins talks about the moments of his life that inspired it.The play tells the story of three siblings reuniting in their family home after the death of their father. Charged with going through his belongings, the children discover troubling relics within the home. They are left to deal with the question of an inheritance, but also this new challenge to their late father's legacy.Jacobs-Jenkins has since staged “Appropriate” several times, been a Pulitzer Prize finalist for two subsequent plays, and been awarded a MacArthur “genius” fellowship. But it wasn't until December 2023 that the playwright made his Broadway debut with “Appropriate,” which is now up for eight Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Play and Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play for actress Sarah Paulson.Host Kai Wright sits with Brandon Jacobs-Jenkins to discuss the real-life moments that inspired the creation of this show, and the playwright's efforts to understand the complicated inheritances of race in America.
