Our Grand Tour reaches one of its strangest destinations this week as we complete our trilogy of Tezuka Osamu-themed episodes with a look at the Animerama Trilogy, a collection of three experimental animated films for adults created by Mushi Productions between 1969 and 1973. Coinciding with the Japanese New Wave movement and the rise of ‘Pink Films,' these movies are stylistically anarchic, occasionally graphic, and range from irreverent and immature to startlingly sophisticated. Consisting of 1969's A Thousand & One Nights, 1970's Cleopatra, and 1973's Belladonna of Sadness, all directed by Yamamoto Eiichi, these films were part of a global wave of efforts to make elaborate feature animation aimed squarely at adults, and while none were successful enough to pull Mushi Pro out of bankruptcy, they have endured as a fascinating experiment from a time when anime was still finding itself – and the last film, Belladonna of Sadness, is absolutely a masterpiece within its own right. Enjoy, and come back next week as we put on our tin-foil hats, get paranoid, and watch the classic 2006 anime Welcome to the N.H.K.! Fools Fest is KCSU's annual punk festival, always set to happen around April Fools Day! Every year, KCSU gathers local punk and punk-adjacent bands to play on Colorado State University's campus, creating a unique and exciting event for all to enjoy. KCSU's music directors, Mia Templien and Ria Janapati, had the opportunity to sit down with a few of the bands performing for some in-depth interviews. The amalgamation of kids wanting to play in a band but not finding the right people is what created Snow Day. Consisting of Grace Murch, Jack DeStefano, Kenny Barnes, and Bradley Brungardt, Snow Day is a hodgepodge of alternative rock, punk, noise rock, and much more. Murch had never played bass before, DeStefano snagged Barned from Denver, and Brungardt got a call from Snow Day's old drummer, asking him to fill in. They find inspiration in bands like Sonic Youth, Nettspend, and Xaviersobased, and are ready to rock CSU's socks off!
Consisting of Caryl Kristensen and Marilyn Kentz, the comedy duo garnered worldwide fame in the 1990s, starring in their own television sitcom and later hosting a daytime talk show.

The Bloody Benders were a family of serial killers active in Labette County, Kansas, from 1871 to 1873. Consisting of John Bender Sr., his wife Elvira (or Almira), their son John Jr., and daughter Kate, they operated a small inn and general store on the Osage Trail, which was frequented by travelers. The family would invite guests to sit at a table with their backs against a curtain, where they would be struck from behind with a hammer, usually by John Sr. or John Jr., while distracted by Kate, who was known for her beauty and purported spiritualist abilities. After the murder, the victims' throats were slit, and their bodies were buried in an orchard or thrown into a well on the property. The Benders are believed to have killed between 11 to 20 people, with the actual number uncertain due to the frontier's sparse record-keeping. The family's crimes came to light after the disappearance of Dr. William York in 1873, whose brother, a prominent state senator, organized a search. When authorities arrived at the Bender homestead, the family had already vanished. The property was searched, revealing several bodies, confirming the grim suspicions. The Benders' fate remains a mystery; stories range from them being lynched by vigilantes, escaping to other parts of the country or even abroad, or changing identities. Their story has since become a legendary tale in American folklore. Sources: Nadel, D. (2024, July 19). The bloody benders: the family that wasn't. Today, we bring you the man who founded the global phenomenon HYROX. Mo is a double Olympic Gold Medallist in hockey, having won with Germany in Beijing and London. Described to me by someone who knows far more about the sport as ‘The Cristiano Ronaldo' of field hockey, we were pretty excited to get both a sporting icon and high flying entrepreneur in the studio; always what we strive for on the Business of Sport! Since it was founded in 2017, HYROX has become a major player in sporting participation. Consisting of both running and 8 separate ‘fitness' activities to form a unique race format, millions of people have participated in their events around the world. The success has been so impressive that they have now had to implement a ballot in some cities (including London where they had over 70,000 applications) to manage demand. But this isn't just a series of fitness events; this is a sport, the driving values of which lie in community and engagement. I can't deny, when we got into it, the business was pretty insane too. This has been the most requested show over the last 3 months. It was a lot of fun entering a completely new area for the show. This is one incredible sports asset that is only going to get bigger. We're delighted to welcome Mo to the Business of Sport. What is HYROX?: “52% of people call fitness their sport, but what is the sport”? What was the opportunity moment that led to Mo and Christian embarking on their HYROX journey? A breakdown of what an event actually consists of; from running to sled pushes to rowing. How they have taken HYROX from a 650 person event in Hamburg in 2017 to 650,000 signed up global participants this year across 85 events. Can anyone participate in HYROX? Who is the target audience? How did Mo's experience as an athlete prepare him for life as an entrepreneur? Creating Community: “You cannot reduce this down to the business model”: how Moritz created one of the most engaged fitness communities in the world. Why does he think this has resonated with so many people and what do they attribute the success of HYROX to so far? What does it mean to build community? Lots of people talk about it but very few are able to achieve and then maintain it. Why is it so important to build out both the professional end and the mass participation front? The Business of HYROX: From a near $100m in sign-ups this year to selling media packages to the majority of participants, how do you build on the HYROX hype without exploiting the loyalty of the people who helped build it? The importance of relationships with global brands like PUMA and Red Bull; the commercial model that powers the brands. How an affiliate model with gyms will power the development of the sport and allow people to train specifically for events. Which events have HYROX licensed and which ones do they keep in-house; the logistics of operating a global series. The Talking Heads is known as one of the more quirky bands of the 70's and 80's, and terribly innovative in their approach to both music and performance. Consisting of Tina Weymouth on bass, Chris Frantz on drums, Jerry Harrison on keyboards and guitar, and fronted by David Byrne on vocals and guitar, the Talking Heads helped to shape the landscape of alternative and new wave rock through the 80's and 90's. They really hit mainstream consciousness with their fifth album called "Speaking in Tongues" in 1983. They followed this up with the live album "Stop Making Sense," which showcased the elaborate stage setups and their visual presence, complete with Byrne's iconic "big suit" fashion wear.Little Creatures was their sixth studio album and the best selling album of the group's career. The Talking Heads toned down their experimental tendencies on this one in favor of a more stripped-down, accessible approach. While there are still elements of art music and new wave present in the tracks, they play a more whimsical role. The songs blend in pop, folk, and country influences as well, giving the album a bright, catchy feel in addition to the wit and quirkiness for which the group was known. The album cover was created by artist Howard Finster, and incorporates themes of Americana and everyday life. This complemented the songs well, and was selected by Rolling Sone magazine as the album cover of the year. The group would go on to produce two more studio albums before disbanding in 1991. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.Show co-founder Brian Dickhute is back to present this album in Bruce's absence for today's podcast. The Lady Don't MindThere's a certain amount of weirdness that is difficult to explain in the lyrics of just about every Talking Heads song, and this is no exception. This reggae-tinged song talks about a lady who is hard to pin down or figure out. "Last time she jumped out the window, well, she only turned and smiled. You might think she would say something, but you'd have to wait a while." Perfect WorldWhile most songs were written by David Byrne, this one features lyrics composed years earlier by drummer Chris Frantz. It is a deeper cut, and a mini-love story. Stay Up LateThis track was the fourth single released from the album. It is a song about Byrne's sister's baby, and describes an adult keeping the baby up late despite the consequences, just to have fun and enjoy this new life. Road to NowhereThis song was released as a single, and went to number 25 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. Byrne describes it as "a song that presented a resigned, even joyful look at doom." The gospel choir that leads off the track was added after the song was concluded to complete what is essentially a two-chord song. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Soul Finger by the Bar-Kays (from the motion picture Spies Like Us)Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd star in this spy comedy where novice spies are sent into the Soviet Union.STAFF PICKS:West End Girls by Pet Shop BoysLynch starts the staff picks with a song about class and pressures of city life in London, inspired by a T.S. Eliot poem. It was released twice as a single, once in April 1984 when it became a club hit, and this version as a re-recorded single in October 1985. It went to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.It's Not Love by DokkenWayne takes us in a more hair metal direction with a head banger tune from Dokken's third album, "Under Lock and Key." This was the third single released from the album. The video contains scenes where the band is playing from a flat bed truck, and was actually recorded on the road. They received several tickets during the process, despite having permission to film.Magic Power by TriumphRob features a Canadian power trio from their live double album, “Stages.” Originally recorded on their studio album, “Allied Forces,” the song describes the healing power of music. It is one of the group's signature songs, and the live format gives a good sense of the band's chemistry on stage.Tonight She Comes by The CarsBrian closes out the staff picks with a previously unreleased song from the Cars' Greatest Hits album, released in October 1985. Ric Ocasek wrote the song, and originally intended it for his solo album, but brought it to the group instead. It was their fourth and last single to be a top 10 hit. Chicago psych-rock band Spun Out have just released their second LP Dream Noise, out October 25th via Shuga Records, and shared the lead single/video “Paranoia.” Consisting of former NE-HI members Michael Wells (guitar, vocals) and James Weir (keys), plus the addition of Sean Page (synths), Joshua Wells (drums, recording, mixing), and Chris Sutter (bass), Spun Out create melancholic psych-pop bliss full of lush mesmerizing grooves, with a keen ear for studio experimentation. Lead single “Paranoia” furthers that. Inspired by a time when Wells was taken out by a rip tide in the Pacific, the song is about the feeling of trying to remain calm physically despite not being able to control what's around you. “Lyrically, I was trying to convey how dreams overlap into real life and vice versa,” explains Wells. “I got taken out by a rip tide in the Pacific a few years back and that feeling of trying to remain calm physically while not being in control of your surroundings definitely informed the psychology of the tune, as well as the twists and turns of the production style.” The video was directed by Tim Nagle, and shows Wells watching grainy VHS footage that gets increasingly unsettling, creating an atmosphere that lives up to the track's title. Dream Noise is an intentionally more honed and curated collection of songs than Spun Out's debut, Touch the Sound (2020, Shuga). It takes the band's collaborative spirit and sense of maximalist experimentation established in their debut and vacuum seals these ideas into tightly arranged, hooky pop gems. Sonically, the production style of the record remains refreshing, surprising and unto themselves compared to other indie music contemporaries. Lyrically, Spun Out finds new depth of emotion in directness, spruced up by memorable double entendres and turns of phrase. The hooks are smart and poetic, but never boring. Dream Noise emphasizes the performance and character of the band as live performers more than the exploratory studio templates of the debut, bringing a new element of warmth and naturalness to their sound. By the start of 1933, thousands of banks across America had already closed their doors. 13 million Americans were unemployed and the stock market had crashed, leaving the United States in the worst economic crisis in modern history. In the twelve years that would follow, the Dust Bowl would ravage the plains and render former farmland useless, heightening the impacts of the depression as the Second World War brought the entire world to a standstill. But Franklin Delano Roosevelt, or FDR as many would come to know him, would take it all in stride. Born in Hyde Park, New York in 1882, he was elected to the New York Senate in 1910, would go on to serve as the Assistant Secretary of the Navy under President Wilson, and finally as the Governor of New York before being elected President of the United States in 1932. Perhaps best known for his sweeping economic programs, a deep connection with the American people, and his incredible strength shown amidst personal disaster, he would guide the country through the turbulence with courage, resilience, and, above all else, optimism. In the heart of Washington D.C., a tribute to Roosevelt sits in a secluded corner of the National Mall. Designed by renowned landscape architect Lawrence Halprin in 1974, the memorial stretches across 7.5 acres, making it the largest of any National Mall Memorial. The initial plans would wait for more than 20 years before Congress could approve the appropriate funding, but it was eventually dedicated on May 2, 1997, by President Bill Clinton. Consisting of more than 30,000 granite stones from South Dakota and Minnesota and with over 100,000 gallons of water flowing through seven fountains and pools, it is a stark contrast to the monuments that surround it, telling the story of an unprecedented presidency through elements of stone, water, and earth. This week on America's National Parks, take a stroll through the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial and the lasting legacy of the 32nd President of the United States. Consisting of 193 member states, the United Nations is a global organisation which strives for peace, dignity and equality on a healthy planet. Founded in 1945, it provides a forum for the world's nations to come together, discuss issues and find solutions, which transcend national boundaries. The UN has successfully ended conflicts across the world and has won the Nobel Peace Prize over ten times. However it has been criticized for the alleged abuse of power by nations, inaction and failure to prevent armed conflicts. So in a rapidly changing world – is the UN fit for purpose? Host Claire Graham talks to the BBC North America & UN correspondent Nada Tawfik about the structure, purpose and future of the United Nations. Produced by Cathy Young for BBC World Service.
Mike Dillon is a percussionist, vibraphonist, bandleader, singer-songwriter, and vocalist born in San Antonio Texas. He is a member of Critters Buggins, Les Claypool's Fancy Band, and Garage A Trois. He has performed with many musicians including Ani DiFranco, Galactic, Brave Combo, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, Marco Benevento, Clutch, Claude Coleman Jr., and New Orleans musicians Kevin O'Day, Johnny Vidacovich, James Singleton, and Ricky Lee Jones. Mike Dillon & Punkadelick makes its recorded debut with Inflorescence, an album of heady, instrumental rock highlighting a band deep in the throes of creative freedom, road tested and wild. Consisting of 10 tracks in 42-minutes, it's an expansive, focused and fearless collection, representing a world where Duke Ellington and Augustus Pablo rub shoulders with crate-digger exotica, the freak-funk of Parliament and the ‘anything fits' outsider ethos of acid-fried punks like The Meat Puppets. A trio featuring Mike Dillon (Ricki Lee Jones, Ani DiFranco, Les Claypool) on vibraphone, marimba, Prophet 6, congas, and bongos, Brian Haas (Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey) on Fender Rhodes, piano, bass Moog and melodica and Nikki Glaspie (Beyonce) on drums, cymbals and vocals, Punkadelick is the unified vision of six hands creating a world that often sounds like the work of an ensemble three times the size. During 2020 and 2021, while many music venues were still shuttered, the group began touring, sweating their way through cuts Dillon and Haas had composed during quarantine writing sessions. Locking in on stage, it quickly became clear the band was functioning at a level that made the hair on their arms stand at attention—even for three live music veterans accustomed to life on the road. July 27th Mike and Punkadelick are playing the Grog shop in Cleveland OH tickets here! https://grogshop.gs/event-details/13536034/mike-dillon-punkadelic-hello-3d-c-level/ Mike's Info https://www.mikedillonvibes.com/

When you think of the bombing raids of WWII most people instantly picture the East End of London. But this week we are talking about a lesser known, and much shorter blitz that took place on the other side of the Irish Sea.Consisting of only four nights over the course of less than a month, the people of Belfast could not have imagined the amount of horror that could be caused in such a short span of time. But when your government assumed that they would never need to defend themselves, they tend to be slightly under prepared. So join us for a tale of how misplaced confidence can result in terrible consequences of historic proportions. This field-defining volume of queer anthropology foregrounds both the brilliance of anthropological approaches to queer and trans life and the ways queer critique can reorient and transform anthropology. Consisting of fourteen original essays by both distinguished and new voices, Unsettling Queer Anthropology: Foundations, Reorientations, and Departures (Duke UP, 2024) advances a vision of queer anthropology grounded in decolonial, abolitionist, Black feminist, transnational, postcolonial, Indigenous, and queer of color approaches. Critically assessing both anthropology's queer innovations and its colonialist legacies, contributors highlight decades of work in queer anthropology; challenge the boundaries of anthropology's traditional methodologies, forms, and objects of study; and forge a critical, queer of color, decolonizing queer anthropology that unsettles anthropology's normative epistemologies. At a moment of revitalized calls to reckon with the white supremacist and settler colonial logics that continue to shape anthropology, this volume advances an anthropology accountable to the vitality of queer and trans life. Alex Walsh is the author behind the hit historical fiction book series, the Marquess House Saga. In Alex's books, she has built what I consider to be the historians dream, with a compelling and fascinating story in which a pair of sisters find their lives overturned and directly tied to significant periods of history. Consisting of dual timelines, Alex's series has reimagined the stories of some of histories most infamous women, telling alternative tales of the lives of Catherine Howard, Elizabeth I, Arbella Stuart and Jane Seymour, all of which, whilst fictitious, are plausible and so rich in detail that you can't help but think, I wish this was all true! She joins me today for a fascinating discussion about her work, her inspiration, how she came up with the series and much much more!

"We are not born with the secret of how to live [well], and too many of us never learn it. There is nothing cold-blooded or mechanical about it, but there are many things we have to learn to do . . . the first thing is to realize we've probably been looking in the wrong place. The source is not outside us; it is within." —Mildred Newman & Bernard Berkowitz, authors of How to Be Your Own Best Friend Befriend yourself and you have a friend for life. This simple saying, often expressed, while true, is often not understood as to how it can be possible. But the most awesome news I want to share with you today is that you have had the answers to so much of the peace, calm, and clarity you have been seeking traveling within you all this time. How to tap into and what exactly are you looking for? That is what we are going to talk about today. Inspired by a book that was written in 1971 Mildred Newman and her husband, both psychologists, Bernard Berkowitz, the title was originally How To be Your Own Best Friend: A Conversation With Two Psychoanalysts. Consisting of only 74 pages, their insights are shared, as this title suggests, in conversation form - questions followed by answers. While little known when the couple originally self-published, it was with the help of author, screenwriter and director Nora Ephron, who upon reading the book quite liked it so she introduced the authors to her book agent upon which it then became a national bestseller (learn more about how she helped in this article published earlier this year). Picking up my own copy and zooming through it, I found common sense advice, grounded in approachable guidance sharing reminders and nudges of how we can help ourselves out but often are too timid to do so due to a variety of cultural circumstances and pressures. As I read, the overlap of choosing to be your best friend and finding and experiencing contentment quickly became apparent, and having just wrapped up producing all of the filmed lessons for TSLL's Contentment Masterclass, as you will discover when you enroll, knowing ourselves and honoring what we find to be true for ourselves resides at the core of a fulfilling life. In the words of the authors, becoming our best friend is sage wisdom to follow. However, what does that look like? Being our own best friend? That's what I want to share with you today and the benefits of doing so. Let's get started. View the Show Notes on the blog: https://thesimplyluxuriouslife.com/podcast379
Consisting of about 25,000 verses in Valmiki's Rāmāyaṇa, the story of Rāma was summarized in 704 verses in eighteen chapters in the Rāmopākhyāna, which comprises chapters 258--275 of the Aranyaka Parvan of the great epic Mahābhārata. Peter Scharf's Ramopakhyana - the Story of Rama in the Mahabharata (Routledge, 2023) is suitable for students who have completed an introductory Sanskrit course to continue reading Sanskrit on their own, but it may also be used in a second-year Sanskrit course, or by beginning Sanskrit students.
