The best meal I've eaten in Cape Town recently whas hands-down the one I enjoyed with my wife at Vue Shortmarket. With Vusi Ndlovu in the kitchen and Absie Pantshwa out front, this is the exceptional product of a pair of fascinating minds who take diners on a journey into African ingredients and cooking techniques with a refinement and playfulness that is delightful. Chatting with Vusi is always hilarious. I doubt that I've laughed as much with any other guest. For more on Vue Shortmarket, click hereMessage me here with comments or guest suggestions.Treat yourself - order direct from Zuney WagyuGet a fair price with HeadsUpChat to Mischa or Sash of Socially Unacceptable here Slow down and chill out at 44 Stanley www.rwm2012.com On Instagram @a_table_inthecorner Cover image sketched by Courtney Cara Lawson All profile portraits by Russel Wasserfall unless otherwise credited Title music: 'In Time' by Olexy via Pixabay

On today's episode of In Time, Peter and Robyne unpack the fine line between judgement and compassion for ourselves and others. Can practicing moments of self-compassion make it easier to extend that compassion to others? Does thinking in the third-person help make us kinder to ourselves? And what happens when we call a “redo” in the middle of a hard conversation? Plus, why good intentions are not Windex for hurt feelings.Follow Peter and Robyne on social media:Peter Katz: Facebook: @peterkatzmusic | Instagram: @peterkatzmusic | LinkedIn: Peter KatzDr. Robyne Hanley-Dafoe: Twitter: @dr_robynehd | Instagram: @dr_robynehd | LinkedIn: drrobynehdLearn more about Peter & Robyne's digital course, Your Time.2025 © All Rights Reserved.

Until very recently, Belly of the Beast was my favourite restaurant I'd never eaten in. That sad situation has been remedied and lunch at this Harrington Street legend was everything I'd imagined. I sat down for Episode 02 of the second season of A Table in the Corner to chat to Neil Swart who created Belly with chef and co-owner Anouchka Horn. I'll chat to Anouchka in an upcoming show about the duo's second venue, Galjoen. For more on Belly of the Beast, click hereMessage me here with comments or guest suggestions.Treat yourself - order direct from Zuney WagyuGet a fair price with HeadsUpChat to Mischa or Sash of Socially Unacceptable here Slow down and chill out at 44 Stanley www.rwm2012.com On Instagram @a_table_inthecorner Cover image sketched by Courtney Cara Lawson All profile portraits by Russel Wasserfall unless otherwise credited Title music: 'In Time' by Olexy via Pixabay

As if proof were needed that strong narratives sell brands, my favourite local coffee brand, Bean There, has a fabulous back-story. We used their coffee in our restaurants and I was a regular in their Wale Street shop before the closed it to concentrate on the wholesale aspect of their business. Në “She's On Air” asnjë temë tabu nuk mbetet pa u trajtuar.

I'm back with Justin Bonello to chat about his urban farming project, Neighbourhood Farm in Fish Hoek. One episode just couldn't pack in all the stuff this fascinating human is doing, and I'm not sure I've managed in two. We spoke about the importance of connection kids to nature and the source of their food, the challenges of keeping an urban farming project running and the harrowing thought that although we idealise the village life, we've completely forgotten how to live as a community in a village. Justin is a really engaging guest with a lot of insights that really altered my thinking on some issues.Message me here with comments or guest suggestions.Treat yourself - order direct from Zuney WagyuGet a fair price with HeadsUpTop Restaurants in Cape Town according to the Inside Guide Survey www.rwm2012.com On Instagram @a_table_inthecorner Cover image sketched by Courtney Cara Lawson All profile portraits by Russel Wasserfall unless otherwise credited Title music: 'In Time' by Olexy via Pixabay

This is the first solo episode of Scaling Theory, where I take a deep dive into the literature. Building on a working paper titled “Adaptive Regulation,” I explore why “future-proof” laws so often fail in the face of rapid technological change, and how complexity science can guide us toward rules that adapt to the things they regulate. Drawing on recent EU digital acts and voices from law, economics, and complexity theory, I sketch the contours of a regulatory system that scales. You can follow me on X (@ProfSchrepel) and BlueSky (@ProfSchrepel).References:Schrepel, T., Adaptive Regulation (2025) https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=5416454Ranchordás, S., & Van‘t Schip, M. Thomas and Frank kick off a running series to assemble a living “Hall of Fame” of 100 movies covered on Challenge Accepted. In this first pass, they lock in the opening 20 picks across adventure, animation, sci-fi, horror, and sports drama. Along the way they talk performance standouts, scenes that shaped their taste, and how future rewatches and listener votes could bump titles up or off the board. Titles can move as we review more films and as listeners weigh in. Emotional resonance matters as much as craft, from TMNT's farmhouse sequence to Big Fish's generational pull. Genre representatives help keep variety, like Empire for Star Wars and a Ghibli pick for animation. Craft notes: Jurassic Park's blend of practical and digital still sets the bar, and Vol. 3 sparks a James Gunn redemption chat. Community plan: we will combine Frank's rankings, Thomas's rankings, and a listener ballot to shape the master list. Justin Bonello was creating great food shows for TV back when Jamie Oliver was just starting to come to our attention. Charné van Heerden was the life and soul of House of Machines, and there was probably a collective "Booooo!" when people heard she was moving on after six years behind the bar. Lucky for the crew, she only moved across the road, and opened her own very chilled, late-night cocktail lounge. HIBALL serves a range of cleverly-wrought cocktails in high ball glasses, along with flavoursome and comforting risottos. The idea is that it's not too raucous. You can linger over your drink and natter the night away, with a nourishing bowl to fill you up and the end of a night's 'gezelligheit'. Burning Bright and Chris Paul break down Andrew Niccol's dystopian thriller In Time, where life itself is currency and timekeepers rule like central bankers. They explore the film's on-the-nose parallels to fiat money, inflation, usury, and the Cantillon Effect, comparing its “time chain” to Bitcoin's fixed protocol. The hosts connect themes of Darwinism, generational wisdom, and the emptiness of immortality to broader cultural critiques, highlighting how elites manipulate scarcity to control society. From Occupy Wall Street echoes to Trump's populist judo flips, they frame the movie as both a cautionary tale and a mirror to our financial and political systems. With sharp insights, humor, and plenty of rabbit holes, from diamonds to decentralization, this episode shows why In Time still resonates as a metaphor for the theft of human energy and purpose.
