In this Special Thursday episode of A Table in the Corner, Russel sits down with brother and sister team Danillo and Chiara Turilli, the operators behind Lello's Deli, to talk about inheritance, identity and building something deeply personal in a city that is moving as quickly as Cape Town is right now.Raised within a family restaurant business run by their father, the Turillis describe themselves as restaurant babies who tried, unsuccessfully, to escape hospitality. Danillo left for fashion photography in Hamburg. Chiara moved into food styling and corporate work. Yet both found themselves drawn back to the rhythms of service, family recipes and the particular weight of Italian food culture. The conversation traces the evolution from Scarpetta, their father's final and most personal restaurant, to Lello's original De Waterkant deli and now its move to Sea Point. We talk about counter service in a culture that resists it, charging properly for ingredients whose price reflects their authenticity, and refusing to dilute tradition for comfort. Mortadella is the real thing. Amatriciana is made with guanciale. Coffee is served the Italian way. They speak candidly about legacy, grief and closing their father's restaurant after his passing, choosing instead to carry forward the parts that mattered to them. There is no master plan here, only instinct shaped by upbringing: seasonal tomatoes jarred for winter, pizza al taglio sold by weight, pasta made the way their family remembers it.This is a conversation about diaspora, stubbornness and the responsibility of doing things properly, told by two operators who understand that authenticity is not a marketing position but a lived inheritance.Thumbnail image by Soh BangContact me with thoughts or suggestions for the show on russel@rwm2012.com www.rwm2012.com On Instagram @a_table_inthecorner Cover image sketched by Courtney Cara Lawson All profile portraits by Russel Wasserfall unless otherwise credited Title music: 'In Time' by Olexy via Pixabay

On today's episode of In Time, Peter and Robyne reflect on what sustains us through the natural highs and lows of creative work and public life. How do we navigate seasons of momentum and seasons of quiet without letting pressure take over? What shifts when we speak encouragement out loud instead of keeping it trapped in our heads? And how might boredom, bodywork, and even a self-hug help regulate us more than constant productivity ever could? Plus, a reminder that criticism - especially from ourselves - may push us through a moment, but it won't carry us to our highest potential.Follow Peter and Robyne on social media:Peter Katz: Facebook: @peterkatzmusic | Instagram: @peterkatzmusic | LinkedIn: Peter KatzDr. Robyne Hanley-Dafoe: Twitter: @dr_robynehd | Instagram: @dr_robynehd | LinkedIn: drrobynehdLearn more about Peter & Robyne's digital course, Your Time.2026 © All Rights Reserved.

In this episode of A Table in the Corner, Russel travels to Boschendal to sit down with Travis Finch, head chef of Arum, to talk about cooking inside one of the Cape's most ambitious agricultural ecosystems. Travis reflects on a career shaped by formative years with Peter Tempelhoff's team and long stints abroad, before returning home to cook at the intersection of land, produce and restraint. The conversation centres on what it means to cook on a regenerative farm at scale, with direct access to gardens, livestock and orchards, and how that proximity reshapes menu thinking, waste, seasonality and responsibility. Travis talks about breaking down formality without lowering standards, working with whole animals and vegetables alike, and designing food that reflects abundance rather than excess. We also explore the realities of running a restaurant across breakfast, lunch and dinner, collaborating with farming teams, and feeding produce back into the wider restaurant group. This is a thoughtful, grounded discussion about provenance, process and pace, told by a chef who understands that the future of cooking is inseparable from how the land beneath it is treated.Learn more about Arum at Boschendal hereGet a fair price with HeadsUpEvery booking is a first impression. Filmmaker Nuala O'Connor joins Irish Stew cohosts Martin Nutty and John Lee for a “Global Irish Nation Conversation” on her documentary In Time: Dónal Lunny, her filmic tone poem in black and white on the enigmatic innovator of Irish music.Co‑founder of the seminal groups Planxty, The Bothy Band, and Moving Hearts, Dónal introduced the flat-back bouzouki to Irish music and broke through with new time signatures, revolutionizing the sound and status of Irish trad music without breaking its fundamental architecture.Previously an RTÉ radio producer, Nuala is now an Emmy Award-winning writer and director whose work in music and arts documentary filmmaking spans more than three decades. The director explains how the title In Time carries intertwined meanings that mirror the musician's life and work. “You know sometimes things come to you for no reason and then they seem to be very reasonable after they've arrived,” she says of the name. “There's the idea of time signature in music. Dónal explored time signatures previously unheard in Irish music and he has been at the forefront of Irish music for so long, you know, literally in time.”The episode also delves into Dónal's deep relationships with fellow musicians, his creative collaborations with his Planxty bandmates, and newer sonic explorations as he is still pushing boundaries in his late seventies. He also pushed boundaries in his personal life which the film unflinchingly shows and the podcasters explore.Nuala explains that she wanted to paint a portrait of an artist still very much in motion, not a nostalgic retrospective, a commitment captured powerfully in the film's climactic scene where an ailing Dónal and his Planxty colleague Christy Moore reunite.“I took Dónal out of hospital, drove him to where we shot that, and then put him in the car and brought him back to hospital after,” she says, “I honestly didn't know, will he be here when the film comes out?In Time: Dónal Lunny will screen on Day 3 of the Solas Nua Capital Irish Film Festival, Feb. 26 through Mar. 1. In this episode of A Table in the Corner, Russel sits down with Tasha Sideris, founder and chief executive of the Tashas restaurant group, to unpack two decades of building one of the most recognisable hospitality brands to emerge from South Africa. The conversation traces Tasha's route into restaurants through family, osmosis and necessity rather than formal training, and how early years on the floor shaped a leadership style rooted in presence, pace and accountability.Tasha speaks candidly about scaling across continents without losing quality, the constant work of sourcing ingredients market by market, and why no two Tashas restaurants are ever identical. We talk about comfort as a design principle, classics as an anchor, and the discipline required to keep food, service and atmosphere aligned at volume. She reflects on rolling up her sleeves during service, leading from inside the business, and why people - not concepts - determine whether restaurants succeed or fail. The discussion also explores growth beyond the flagship brand, from Café Sophie and Arlecchino to mentoring younger operators, building teams across regions and investing in training as a long-term strategy. This is a clear-eyed, practical conversation about consistency, scale and care, told by an operator who understands that hospitality is sustained not by ideas alone, but by the people trusted to execute them every day.Get a fair price with HeadsUpEvery booking is a first impression. Julia explains the thinking behind cooking for a roomful of strangers at once, pairing food to wine, sourcing directly from farmers and growers, and designing a restaurant that values connection, presence and intention over scale. We also talk about no shows, prepaid bookings, shared gratuities and building a small, multi-skilled team without front and back of house divisions. Welcome back to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, the boys attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. The Director Watch duo have talked about some of the most important films of all time, but none bigger than Jeanne Dielman, the film voted as the number one film of all time by Sight and Sound back in 2022. Following the everyday life of a widower preparing meals for her and her son while also performing the occasional trick to make it by, Akerman dives deep into the soul of someone on the verge of falling apart, slowing showing a three-day meltdown that leads to shocking, heartbreaking conclusions. But is it the greatest movie of all time is the real question. Ryan, Jay, and Morgan break down their thoughts on the film, the methodical pace and structure of this portrait of a modern woman, her preparation for the various meals we see her make, her uneven relationship with her son, how missing someone you love has long term effects, the film's controversial ending, and so much more that includes Ryan breaking down the entire plot of the 2011 sci-fi action picture In Time. Hello Out There! Wisdom, Love, and Compassion, Often come through a lot of pain. My walls have to crumble for my pride to be humbled, Before my light can shine bright again. ☉So, after turning off the camera and walking back to the car, I got to feeling that pain is a precursor, or an initiation into, a greater Self. We most often feel pain from things we cannot prevent, figure out, or fix. It disturbs us deeply and hurts so much that we need to stop, look at it, feel it, and break from our ordinary, daily routine, identity, role, etc. We can go down the rabbit hole into despair or use the pain as an indicator, a red flag, showing us where to look, what to change, what more to feel. If we sit with ourselves long enough to become more clear about what it is that hurts, what we're missing, lacking, needing, etc. we can look at our lives, relationships, family, friends and more to CREATE NEW SOLUTIONS. We can rid ourselves of unfulfilling, dead end relationships, jobs, careers, distractions, behaviors, fears, habits etc. and manifest new means of expressing ourselves through words, acts, relationships and more. This is basically a re-birthing of a new Self! A metaphor came to me with regard to what came first, the chicken or the egg... well, maybe it was a baby chicken trying to get out of the egg! Can you imagine how painful it would be to be growing inside of a hard hard shell, getting pressured and squeezed, and crushed with nothing you can do about it? OUCH! The chicken could definitely feel that he was being punished by God, eh? And then, finally, he grows so big that the frickin' egg just cracks. He would then feel like his whole world was breaking down/open, be blown away, scared, even terrified. IN TIME, he dries off (thank god for the Sun), flaps his wings, gets up and walks, and starts a new life. Whew, what a process! We got this! This week's song, Mercy Now: https://youtu.be/IT7NiFpJmvI?si=d39kqK4b4q3_OGrASo Much Love,Kaypacha

In this episode of A Table in the Corner, Russel sits down with Drikus Brink, chef/proprietor of Toevlug, to trace a quietly serious cooking life shaped by farms, butcheries and long service beside Bertus Basson. Brink talks through his early years growing up around meat and trade, cooking boerewors rolls as a teenager, studying in Pretoria and arriving at Overture, to spend nearly a decade in Basson's kitchens. The conversation moves through volume cooking, technique, pressure and instinct, from one man hot sections to breakfast services that teach humility fast. Brink reflects on what he absorbed from Basson's way of working: discipline over decoration, technique over theatre, and the confidence to change a dish mid service if it makes sense. We talk about building restaurants as businesses, growing sideways through bakeries, farm shops and events, and why Toevlug was designed as a place people can return to often rather than conquer once. This is a grounded discussion about fundamentals, mentorship and staying in your lane, told by a chef who understands that good food, properly cooked, is still the point. For more on the Bertus Basson group of restaurants, click hereEvery booking is a first impression. On today's episode of In Time, Peter and Robyne reflect on intention - how we choose it, declare it, and build lives around what actually matters to us. Why do hobbies that have nothing to do with productivity or income feel so grounding? How does publicly naming what we want make it more likely to happen? And what changes when we look back on a year through the lens of what we chose, rather than what happened to us? Plus, a conversation about science, screens, and why learning less is about having the right answers and more about asking better questions - with one gently awkward reminder at the end. Follow Peter and Robyne on social media:Peter Katz: Facebook: @peterkatzmusic | Instagram: @peterkatzmusic | LinkedIn: Peter KatzDr. Robyne Hanley-Dafoe: Twitter: @dr_robynehd | Instagram: @dr_robynehd | LinkedIn: drrobynehdLearn more about Peter & Robyne's digital course, Your Time.2026 © All Rights Reserved.

Built around a 12-seat counter, The Wiggle Room throws out menus, consistency and convention in favour of freedom, creativity and connection. Lester and Fish speak candidly about their unconventional paths through hospitality, the ideas born during smoke breaks outside fine dining kitchens, and the decision to run against the grain with ever-changing menus, illustrated cards, wild ingredients and boundary-pushing drink pairings. This is a conversation about risk, trust, collaboration and why dining can be as much about music, conversation and surprise as it is about food. Advent invites a strange and holy tension: we live in the now and the not yet. There is longing and preparation, waiting and hope. This year the invitation is simple and radical — make room for the One who wants to fill every space in our hearts. Here are practical, gentle ways to create margins for prayer this season:Read the introduction of In Time, the BIS Advent Devotional. Reading the introduction before the season helps shape your attention.Invite one friend. Personal invitations change everything. Ask someone to do the devotional with you. This makes them feel seen AND it anchors your own commitment.Protect a prayer space. Carve out a chair, a corner, or a bedside table where you consistently meet God. Small rituals — a candle, an image, holy water — help your body remember what your heart already knows.Try daily Mass. Even one extra day of Eucharistic presence can re-orient your life. The Eucharist is a meal; God sets a table daily for His children. If logistics feel impossible, start small and be resolutely determined.Use worshipful music to re-center. When you struggle to begin prayer, play contemplative worship or instrumental tracks that point your attention toward God rather than yourself.Set an alarm or rearrange your schedule. Small structural choices — an alarm, waking earlier, or shifting a routine — make space for consistent union with God.Making room is often hard. Family dynamics, work, and fatigue make silence feel impossible. Yet hardness is not the same as wrong. Resistance trains and strengthens us. The spiritual life includes real discipline — but the discipline is always ordered to intimacy.“Just because it's hard doesn't mean that it's wrong.”Check out the whole episode and share how you're going to dive into this upcoming Advent Season!Get your Advent books: Women | Men | Kids
