Founder and editor of The New Yorker, Harold Ross infamously said, "Coons are either funny or dangerous." Derogatorily referring to Black people as "coons" makes his bias crystal clear, and he and other so-called captains of media industry of the same mindset were the gatekeepers and sculptors of the American zeitgeist. They controlled/control how we are seen and how others react to us. Although the vast majority of us were not around during the early fifties we've all heard of the Amos and Andy show that was cancelled under protest by among others, the NAACP for harmful portrayals of Black people. Reportedly, Alvin Childress, the actor who portrayed Amos stated that at the time Amos and Andy was the only television show that showed black people as businessmen, policemen, judges and doctors rather than maids or janitors. With decades of perspective are we ready to take an objective look at Amos and Andy. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrFiKcBdCx8... ). Take a look at several episodes then join us in the OTHERhood at 6p PST/ 8p CST/ 9p EST to discuss whether Amos and Andy is Funny or Dangerous. I'm going live using StreamYard!
