Grab a cold one and pull up a chair. This week, Beans and Gaz are joined by a man whose life story sounds less like a resume and more like a Hollywood screenplay. We are sitting down with retired NYPD veteran Al Gonzalez, a man who spent decades navigating the grit of the South Bronx while carrying a set of bagpipes through the halls of global history.Al takes us deep into the "Fort Apache" era of the South Bronx. We hear firsthand accounts of the organized chaos of the 80s and 90s, the adrenaline of the beat, and the unforgettable cast of characters—both on the force and on the street—that shaped his career. These stories are so raw and compelling they eventually leaped off the pavement and onto the stage in Al's acclaimed Off-Broadway play, Officer: Confessions of a South Bronx Cop.It's not every day you meet a cop who has stood watch over the most famous women in the world. Al shares what it was really like to pull security detail for:Mother Teresa: Protecting a living saint in the heart of the city.Princess Diana: Insights into the charisma and the crowds that followed the People's Princess.Just when you think you've got Al figured out, he pulls out the pipes. We discuss his secondary life as a world-class bagpiper—a talent that took him from the precinct to the Highlands of Scotland. Al reflects on the surreal honor of performing for Queen Elizabeth II at Balmoral Castle, proving that a kid from Jersey can truly end up anywhere if they play their cards (and pipes) right."You haven't lived until you've patrolled the toughest blocks in New York by day and tuned your drones for a Queen by night."In this episode, we discuss:The transition from the street to the stage. The unique psychology of policing the South Bronx in its wildest era.The "behind-the-velvet-rope" moments with global icons. How music provides an escape from the intensity of police work. From the South Bronx to the Silver Screen Guarding Saints and Icons - The Piper of Balmoral. You can learn more about Al on his websites:www.theroyalpiper.comwww.officertheplay.comIf you are interested in bringing Al's show to the UK, get in touch with us here www.tallboyradio.com

The League of Ireland roared back into life last week, with late drama in Derry and Galway grabbing the headlines. That momentum took a hit on Sunday at the Aviva, though, raising fresh questions about hosting league games at the national stadium — something Kieran and Gaz get stuck into. Alongside our 2026 First Division preview and a chat with Treaty United goalkeeper Jack Brady, the lads also react to Roddy Collins' comments on James McClean. There's plenty more too, with a bumper BTS Hotline, the latest BTS Predictions League, and our new charity bet feature, sponsored by BAR 1 Betting (18+, Gamblingcare.ie). Another man excited for the return of the First Division is our long-term sponsor, Anthony Quinn of QuinnAv.ie.
Gaz on Joe reflect on the games against Spurs and West Ham.

In this high-octane episode of Tall Boy Radio, hosts Beans and Gaz sit down with a true legend of American law enforcement: Retired Lt. Cmdr. Vernon J. Geberth. While many know him as the "Godfather of Homicide Investigation," this conversation peels back the layers to reveal the formative years and the grit that forged a world-class detective. Before he was commanding homicide units, Geberth was a young man with an unstoppable work ethic. He takes the listeners on a journey through his diverse early career, explaining how every "odd job" served as a building block for his future in the NYPD:The Hustle: From the precision and pacing of working for UPS to the life-or-death urgency of ambulance driving. The Vigilance: His time as a lifeguard, where he first learned the weight of responsibility for the lives of others. The Transition: How these civilian roles prepared his mindset for the tactical demands of the police force. The heart of the episode dives into Geberth's time on the toughest streets of New York City. As a member of the tactical police force, he faced situations that sound like they were pulled straight from a cinematic thriller. He shares a gripping account of disarming a drug dealer brandishing an 11-inch blade. In a testament to his professionalism and composure, Geberth recounts how that same individual later thanked him for showing restraint and choosing not to use lethal force—a rare moment of mutual respect in a violent environment.Perhaps the most poignant moment of the interview is Geberth's recollection of a harrowing fire rescue. He describes the chaotic scene of a burning house where he successfully pulled two babies to safety. Despite the life-saving feat, the story takes a characteristic "cop-life" turn: Geberth reveals how he received absolutely none of the public credit for the rescue, highlighting the humble, "just doing the job" mentality that defined his career."Everything I did, from driving that ambulance to watching that pool, was just training for the chaos of the NYPD." — Vernon J. GeberthBeans and Gaz bring their signature conversational style to this deep dive, balancing the heavy intensity of police work with genuine curiosity. Whether you are a true crime aficionado, a student of law enforcement, or just a fan of incredible storytelling, this episode offers a masterclass in character, bravery, and the reality of life behind the badge. The Making of a LawmanBoots on the Ground in the NYPDThe Unsung HeroWhy Listen?Pick up Vernon's book - The Godfather of Homicide hereTHE GODFATHER OF HOMICIDE: VERNON J. (O zamân her rek‘atta Fâtiha'dan sonra 100 (yüz) İhlâs-ı Şerîf okunur ve 10 (on) rek‘atın sonunda bir kere selâm verilerek namâz tamâmlanır.) Gaz and Joe are joined by Jay Motty to discuss United's late win over Fulham

We start by exploring his work in Counter-Terrorism, discussing the realities of the threat landscape before the pivotal events of 9/11 and how the bureau operated in a less-publicized era of domestic and international security. But the conversation takes some truly unexpected turns as Ken recounts some of the more unusual cases he was tasked with—the kind of assignments that stretch the imagination and challenge the very definition of law enforcement. The highlight of the episode, however, might just be Ken's incredible firsthand account of what it was like to have Hollywood royalty in the classroom. Ken shares stories from his time at the FBI Academy when a young Jodie Foster was embedded with his training group, meticulously studying for her iconic role as Clarice Starling in the blockbuster film The Silence of the Lambs. He reveals the surprising level of detail and dedication she brought to the preparation, and the impact her presence had on the trainees. Finally, we discuss the transition from badge to book, delving into the compelling works Ken has written since leaving the FBI, and how his real-world experiences continue to inform his storytelling.Prepare to be captivated by a life spent in service, secrecy, and fascinating detail. UKRavens Podcast - A Baltimore Ravens Podcast from the United Kingdom
In this week's episode of the UKRavens Podcast, Gaz, Shane, James and Ashley attempt to put a painful Week 18 defeat to the Pittsburgh Steelers into context, only for the entire conversation to be blown wide open mid-recording by one of the biggest pieces of news in franchise history: John Harbaugh being relieved of his duties as head coach of the Baltimore Ravens. What begins as a post-mortem on a lost season turns into a raw, unfiltered live reaction to a seismic moment for the organisation. The episode opens with reflections on a brutal end to the 2025 season, as the Ravens fall short in a back-and-forth AFC North battle that felt like a perfect microcosm of the year. Despite flashes of brilliance, the night ultimately came down to a missed field goal from rookie kicker Tyler Loop, sealing another narrow defeat and confirming the Ravens' absence from the playoffs. The panel break down the opening drives, the familiar pattern of early promise followed by stagnation, and why this game felt inevitable long before the final kick sailed wide. There is detailed discussion on Lamar Jackson's performance, particularly a fourth quarter that reminded everyone why he remains the beating heart of the franchise. The group analyse Lamar's ability to transcend chaos, escape collapsing pockets, and create something from nothing, while also acknowledging how often this season he has been let down by protection issues, drops and inconsistency around him. Derrick Henry's usage is also dissected, with context around game script, penalties and defensive struggles limiting sustained offensive rhythm. On the other side of the ball, the defence comes under heavy scrutiny. The loss of Kyle Hamilton during the game proves to be a turning point, but the conversation makes clear that the warning signs were there long before. Poor tackling, ineffective pass rush, and an inability to get off the field on third down allowed the Steelers to control tempo. The panel discuss how the defence has regressed against competent opponents, and why the unit's improvement earlier in the season may have been misleading.Special teams take centre stage too, with a thoughtful and emotional discussion around Tyler Loop. Rather than scapegoating, the conversation focuses on accountability, mental resilience, and the reality of being a rookie kicker thrust into an impossibly high-pressure moment. The group reflect on Loop's post-game response, the wider issue of kickoff inconsistency, and what the Ravens must consider at the position moving forward. The episode then takes a dramatic turn. As discussion shifts towards league-wide coaching changes, the news breaks live that John Harbaugh has been fired. What follows is a candid, unscripted reaction as the hosts process the end of an 18-year era. There is immediate shock, followed by measured reflection on Harbaugh's legacy, his role in building sustained success in Baltimore, and why this moment, however jarring, feels like the right inflection point for the franchise. From there, the conversation expands into what comes next. The panel debate the type of head coach the Ravens should pursue, weighing offensive versus defensive-minded candidates, internal continuity versus external change, and the urgency of maximising Lamar Jackson's Super Bowl window. Potential names are discussed, from experienced retreads to young innovators, alongside trust in Steve Bisciotti and Eric DeCosta to navigate what is now one of the most attractive openings in the NFL.The episode closes with a look ahead to the offseason. Draft position, roster needs, schedule implications, and a renewed focus on community engagement all come into view. Despite the disappointment of how the season ended, there is a clear sense of optimism that meaningful change is coming, and that the Ravens still have the foundation to contend.
We're back, a few days later than normal due to the festive break but we have a fantastic podcast to kick start 2026. This month we have two great guests, first up is Jake Davoile, a Fisheries Management Advisor who works for the Angling Trust on a variety of predation projects including the one I really wanted to discuss, seal predation. Yes you read that right, it's a far bigger issue than many even know and Jake plus others have been working tirelessly to re-home seals that ended up in the river Nene with devastating impacts to fish populations. This really is a must-listen as seals in our freshwater systems are on the rise and sadly seal predation has decimated many freshwater river sections in recent years, including a section of the Thames that I was fishing only last year. We follow that with a thoroughly enjoyable chat with Simon Hartop. Now in my opinion Simon once caught a carp that rocked the angling world, almost unknown at the time but equally as impactful as the Black Mirror but this one was even harder to catch. We get an insight into that incredible campaign, as well as his time on the Thames and how fishing for odd uns, carp with very few captures has consumed him over the years. It's not all carp, it was wonderful to touch on Si's editorial work with the BCSG magazine and his involvement with Gaz's Subsurface journals too. To add a little slice of nostalgia to the mix I got to record this chat on Si's old Thames boat, the "Griffin" as by some strange turn of fate my good friend Liam now owns it and it's taken on a new chapter in it's angling life. Hope you enjoy it and Happy New Year to all our listeners.
