Founded in 1957 by Jim Stewart and his sister Estelle Axton, the label became synonymous with the gritty, raw, and deeply emotional sound that defined Southern soul.Stax was home to legendary artists such as Otis Redding, Booker T. & the M.G.'s, Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett (through a deal with Atlantic), Isaac Hayes, and The Staple Singers. Unlike Motown, which had a polished and orchestrated style, Stax music was known for its raw energy, tight horn sections, and a heavy gospel influence.One of Stax's most defining characteristics was its integrated roster of musicians, producers, and executives during a time of deep racial segregation in the South. The studio band, Booker T. & the M.G.'s, featured both Black and white musicians, which was groundbreaking in the 1960s.The label thrived throughout the 1960s but faced difficulties after the tragic death of Otis Redding in 1967 and the loss of its distribution deal with Atlantic Records in 1968. It experienced a resurgence in the early 1970s, largely due to Isaac Hayes' massive success with Hot Buttered Soul and Shaft. This weeks guest is Josh Lindley who returns to the show. Josh began his spirits quest in 2006 after short stints in the broadcasting and music industries. Josh has worked behind bars at notable Toronto establishments like Bar Isabel, Chantecler and Civil Liberties. Josh also worked as brand ambassador for an unusual gin. In 2016 he and life partner, Jessica Blaine Smith, created Bartender Atlas, a worldwide online directory of bartenders. Together, they travel the globe tasting exciting cocktails made by the most passionate bartenders. Jessica and Josh are also co-creators of the Toronto Cocktail Conference and execute events for bartenders and cocktail enthusiasts all over the world. In 2023 Josh made a Spirited Awards Top Ten Nominated Podcast called “The Blackbird” and in 2024 he made sequel called “The Shaft”. Josh's preferred style of drink is “bitter and stirred” and his preferred style of music is “desperate”. **WHAT IS THE SHAFT? ** In 2022, Bartender Atlas traveled to Victoria, British Columbia to visit some old friends and taste some of the city's most interesting cocktails. Jessica and Josh found what they were looking for and more. One thing in particular was a cocktail known as “The Shaft”. This creamy coffee concoction was entirely new to the Bartender Atlas crew. Jessica Josh needed to know where it came from and how it became so ubiquitous in this Western Canadian Capital. What they found out was that there is nothing simple in the story of this three ingredient drink. How do you remake a classic?  Well in the case of trying to bring back the LEGENDARY Private Detective John Shaft of the 1971 Gordon Parks cult hit starring Richard Roundtree, acclaimed director John Singleton (Boyz N The Hood, Poetic Justice) teamed with acclaimed writer Richard Writer (The Color of Money, Clockers) to....NOT remake it, they decided to "re-imagine" the character as a former NYPD cop trying to exact justice in late '90's New York City.  Oscar-nominee Samuel L. Because we were sitting in the rightmost section of the seats, the main podium was over to my left as well. As such you tended to sit turned in your seat a bit, for a more natural view, which placed the brunette "behind" me and the blonde in "front" of me. Now I'm not a little guy. Sans doute parce qu'il parle un français parfait, hérité de sa famille maternelle ; aussi parce qu'il a l'enthousiasme contagieux ; et surtout parce qu'il excelle dans le métier, en solo, en double et en équipage...Barcelonais bercé par la mer en famille, il commence, à la vingtaine, par être préparateur de Figaro à la fin des années 1990 et découvre la Bretagne, pas encore le centre du monde de la course au large. : toute sa carrière il alternera entre séjour "là-haut", comme il dit, et préparation de ses projets sur les rives de la Méditerranée. "Maintenant, je suis mi-espagnol, mi-breton !" rigole-t-il.Il fait ses armes sur les Mini Transats (2003, 2005, 2007) se faisant rapidement remarquer, multipliant les embarquements sur tout ce qui navigue - une de ses marques de fabrique. Il ne met pas longtemps à passer en Class40 puis en Imoca, avec, notamment une 5e place sur la Barcelona World Race en 2011.Mais c'est sa victoire magistrale sur la Route du Rhum en Class40, en 2014, avec un projet 100% espagnol, qui le fait changer de catégorie. Francis Joyon, Sidney Gavignet, Lalou Roucayrol l'appellent - il est de l'équipage d'Idec qui tourne autour de la planète en à peine plus de 40 jours en 2017. Insatiable, il enchaîne ensuite avec - entre autres - Soldini sur Maserati, avec Le Blévec sur Actual, Pilliard sur UseItAgain...A 51 ans , l'équipier très recherché s'est trouvé un nouveau projet depuis l'an dernier : le sien. Il a racheté l'ex  Club Med, catamaran de 33 mètres vainqueur de The Race en 2000. Objectif : boucler  à l'hiver 2025 en 100 jours le trophée océanique Elcano, du nom du capitaine qui termina le voyage de Magellan, premier tour du monde à la voile recensé, contre les vents et les courants, voilà plus de 500 ans. "C'est dingue, c'est le tour du monde originel, et il est à l'envers ! C'était le 6 octobre 2018 et il était alors le récent et inoubliable vainqueur de la Volvo Ocean Race 2017-2018, skipper de Dongfeng Race Team. Il affichait alors déjà un solide palmarès et sa victoire dans la Volvo couronnait un parcours d'exception.Mais 6 ans plus tard, c'est un autre Charles Caudrelier que nous avons invité, avec de nouvelles histoires à nous raconter. Car entre temps, le vainqueur de la Solitaire du Figaro 2004 a sacrément étoffé son CV : quelques semaines après ce premier enregistrement, il a en effet fait son entrée dans le Gitana Team en compagnie de Franck Cammas et... remporté depuis toutes les courses auxquelles il a participé - à l'exception de la Transat Jacques Vabre 2023 - à bord de l'Ultim Edmond de Rothschild.Le Fastnet, la Brest Atlantiques, la Transat Jacques Vabre 2021, et, bien sûr, la Route du Rhum Destination Guadeloupe en 2022 et puis, cette année, l'Arkéa Ultim Challenge l'ont vu franchir la ligne d'arrivé en tête.
