Happy Friday, thanks for downloading another bumper episode! We start this week with the Cool Board. Where will golf speakers, groove cleaners and Sunday bags find their way onto the board? The Explainer this week sees us dive into aftermarket shafts. What exactly is different about an aftermarket shaft versus a stock shaft? And, is the investment in an aftermarket shaft really worth it? Joe explains all. Ask The Pod this week wants to know if anyone really needs a 60° wedge. If someone like Dan Grieve only uses his for emergencies, are we wasting a slot in the bag with a club that rarely makes an appearance and is hard to hit? Finally, this week's WITB sees us investigate the clubs of Phil Mickelson. Joe was due to interview golf's great left-hander earlier this year in Singapore, but sadly that got cancelled. Even so, Joe managed to have a little root around Phil's bag, so he has some brilliant insights into his current equipment. We also take a brief trip into Phil's equipment history - did you know he's the only player to have won a major with no drivers, one driver and two drivers in his bag? Happy Friday, and thanks for downloading the show! Settle in for a bumper episode. After Joe's #banthebutler campaign was picked up by No Laying Up last month, we thought it would be fun to think of more special, one-off events that could be run on the PGA Tour. What would happen if players had to play an event using a persimmon driver, 3-SW blade irons and a ballata ball? Who would fare best, and who would fare worst? Joe also answers whether shaft weight or shaft flex is more important in a club fitting. While the answer is (spoiler alert) overwhelmingly shaft weight, he explains why this aspect is so important to get right so your equipment works better for you. Finally, we welcome short game guru Dan Grieve onto the show for a what's in the bag special. He delves into his newfound love for 7-woods and mallet putters while also detailing exactly why he picks the wedges he uses to chip and pitch so beautifully around the greens.
This week on the Club Junkie Podcast, we're diving into a unique combo of retro style and modern performance! I review the TaylorMade R7 Quad Mini Driver — a nod to the iconic R7 — and see how it stacks up in today's game. Tune in for on-course insights, build details, and honest feedback you won't get anywhere else. Whether you're a gear head or just love hearing about the latest (and classic) equipment, this episode's for you!

Little did we know when we recorded this episode at the end of March that we'd be sitting here right now with Rory McIlroy as a Grand Slam winner. Yes, we filmed this many weeks before the Masters, so we are clueless to Rory's triumph, hence the complete lack of reference to one of the biggest moments in our sport's history! Back to matters of equipment. This week, Dan has a rant about driving range etiquette and people's obsession with how far they're hitting the ball, Joe has an explainer all about torque in shafts, and this week's Ask The Pod wants to know what our dream equipment and apparel sponsors would be. Later, we're joined by Northern Ireland's second-best golfer (sorry, Tom), gear nerd and equipment aficionado Tom McKibbin, for an in-depth look into his bag for the 2025 season. Antonio and Ward also discuss Parks' renowned photograph “American Gothic,” featuring Ella Watson, and how this iconic image vividly illustrated the racial and economic challenges of its time. They touch upon Parks' successful venture into filmmaking, notably directing the groundbreaking movie “Shaft,” highlighting his unique ability to bridge photography and film to address important social issues. Higher Learning Reaction, Recap, Breakdown, Commentary, Analysis, & Spoiler Review! Greg Alba & Coy Jandreau take on Higher Learning, the 1995 drama directed by John Singleton (Boyz N the Hood, 2 Fast 2 Furious) that tackles themes of race, identity, privilege, and systemic injustice in the American college experience. The film follows three freshmen—Malik (Omar Epps), Kristen (Kristy Swanson), and Remy (Michael Rapaport)—as they navigate the pressures of higher education, racial tensions, and personal transformation at the fictional Columbus University. Some of the most intense and pivotal moments include Malik's struggle with his track scholarship and racial identity, Remy's descent into white supremacy under the influence of Cole Hauser's character, and the tragic climactic shooting scene that shakes the entire campus. Other powerful moments include Ice Cube's character Fudge dropping hard truths about systemic racism, Laurence Fishburne's powerful lectures as Professor Phipps, and the heartbreaking fates of several key characters that still resonate today. Omar Epps as Malik Williams (Love & Basketball, House), Kristy Swanson as Kristen Connor (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Phantom), Michael Rapaport as Remy (True Romance, Atypical), Ice Cube as Fudge (Friday, Barbershop), Jennifer Connelly as Taryn (A Beautiful Mind, Requiem for a Dream), Tyra Banks as Deja (Coyote Ugly, America's Next Top Model), Laurence Fishburne as Professor Phipps (The Matrix, John Wick 2), Cole Hauser as Scott Moss (Yellowstone, 2 Fast 2 Furious), Regina King as Monet (Watchmen, If Beale Street Could Talk), and Busta Rhymes as Dreads (Halloween: Resurrection, Shaft). Rockshow episode 211 The Story of Stax RecordsStax Records was a pioneering American record label based in Memphis, Tennessee, that played a crucial role in the development of soul, R&B, and funk music. Founded in 1957 by Jim Stewart and his sister Estelle Axton, the label became synonymous with the gritty, raw, and deeply emotional sound that defined Southern soul.Stax was home to legendary artists such as Otis Redding, Booker T. & the M.G.'s, Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett (through a deal with Atlantic), Isaac Hayes, and The Staple Singers. Unlike Motown, which had a polished and orchestrated style, Stax music was known for its raw energy, tight horn sections, and a heavy gospel influence. One of Stax's most defining characteristics was its integrated roster of musicians, producers, and executives during a time of deep racial segregation in the South. The studio band, Booker T. & the M.G.'s, featured both Black and white musicians, which was groundbreaking in the 1960s.The label thrived throughout the 1960s but faced difficulties after the tragic death of Otis Redding in 1967 and the loss of its distribution deal with Atlantic Records in 1968. It experienced a resurgence in the early 1970s, largely due to Isaac Hayes' massive success with Hot Buttered Soul and Shaft. However, financial struggles led to Stax's bankruptcy in 1975.In later years, Stax was revived as a brand, and its legacy continues through reissues and the Stax Museum of American Soul Music in Memphis. Its impact on music remains profound, influencing countless artists across multiple genres.https://staxrecords.com/https://youtube.com/@staxrecords?si=bPBfHvzs7kxHrb5Dhttps://staxmuseum.org/#StaxRecords #SoulMusic #MemphisSoul #OtisRedding #IsaacHayes #BookerTandTheMGs #SouthernSoul #RNB #ClassicSoul #SamAndDave #TheStapleSingers #SoulLegends #Funk #VintageVinyl #MusicHistory #StaxMuseum #RespectYourRoots
This weeks guest is Josh Lindley who returns to the show. Josh began his spirits quest in 2006 after short stints in the broadcasting and music industries. Josh has worked behind bars at notable Toronto establishments like Bar Isabel, Chantecler and Civil Liberties. Josh also worked as brand ambassador for an unusual gin. In 2016 he and life partner, Jessica Blaine Smith, created Bartender Atlas, a worldwide online directory of bartenders. Together, they travel the globe tasting exciting cocktails made by the most passionate bartenders. Jessica and Josh are also co-creators of the Toronto Cocktail Conference and execute events for bartenders and cocktail enthusiasts all over the world. In 2023 Josh made a Spirited Awards Top Ten Nominated Podcast called “The Blackbird” and in 2024 he made sequel called “The Shaft”. Josh's preferred style of drink is “bitter and stirred” and his preferred style of music is “desperate”. **WHAT IS THE SHAFT? ** In 2022, Bartender Atlas traveled to Victoria, British Columbia to visit some old friends and taste some of the city's most interesting cocktails. Jessica and Josh found what they were looking for and more. One thing in particular was a cocktail known as “The Shaft”. This creamy coffee concoction was entirely new to the Bartender Atlas crew. Jessica Josh needed to know where it came from and how it became so ubiquitous in this Western Canadian Capital. What they found out was that there is nothing simple in the story of this three ingredient drink. How do you remake a classic? Well in the case of trying to bring back the LEGENDARY Private Detective John Shaft of the 1971 Gordon Parks cult hit starring Richard Roundtree, acclaimed director John Singleton (Boyz N The Hood, Poetic Justice) teamed with acclaimed writer Richard Writer (The Color of Money, Clockers) to....NOT remake it, they decided to "re-imagine" the character as a former NYPD cop trying to exact justice in late '90's New York City. Oscar-nominee Samuel L. Jackson now plays the titular character with Roundtree returning to play his uncle. This time around, Shaft is determined to bring justice for the racially-charged murder of an innocent young man at a NYC club. The murderer is played by Oscar-winner Christian Bale (The Fighter), the witness whom Shaft has to find is played by Oscar-nominee Toni Colette (The Sixth Sense).....and beyond that, Shaft also has to combat corrupt local cops PLUS local drug kingpin Peoples Hernandez played by Oscar-nominee Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction). Throw in some high-octane action, Busta Rhymes as Shaft's driver, AND....the iconic Oscar-winning theme song from Isaac Hayes and what do you get? Besides several Oscar nominees, you happen to get a surprisingly enjoyable (and very timely) action thriller to kick off Black History Month. Can you dig it? :) Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
