Growing up, Victor Saad moved all throughout the midwest, and found a community in after school Church programming. He spent his entire college career studying to be a Youth Paster, and graduated around age 22 with a job working at a Church with a Youth Group. Five years later, Victor pivoted and began looking for a program that would help him learn skills in design and business. However, he ended up designing his own masters program, completing 12 projects in 12 months and eventually making his way to Stanford as a Lecturer and Program Lead for Design Summer. If you want to learn and grow, do you have to go back to school and get a Master's Degree? Victor Saad designed his own Master's by completing 12 projects in 12 months. He called it The Leap Year Project and his experiences culminated with staging his own graduation at a local TEDx and publishing a book of stories focused on the power of learning through risk. He later launched Experience Institute, a program for college students and career professionals to learn and grow through short-term, real-world experiences. In 2015, he was inducted into Forbes' 30 Under 30 in the field of education. In 2017 he joined the team at Stanford's School of Engineering as a Lecturer in Design. This week he joins The Creative Muscle to talk about how to expand your comfort zone, how to keep a learner's mindset, and how to decide what to do next.
Victor Saad (victorsaad.com) talks with host Blake Boles about the 12 apprenticeships that he did in 12 months instead of pursuing an MBA, the education company that he subsequently founded called Experience Institute (expinstitute.com), his thoughts on promoting innovation in the K-12 realm, and the magical $100,000/year school that he and I are going to start some day. Victor Saad, my guest on this episode #020 of Process, is taking higher education by storm. His creative journey started when he chose to design his own 12-month Master’s program instead of applying to an existing school, wrote a book about his experiences and then created an organization that provides a similar learning experience to students every year, called Experience Institute, which is his main project nowadays. He was even named on Forbes 30 under 30 list for his work in education. I’m excited to talk to Victor about what it’s like to disrupt (and improve) higher education and what his big goals are for the future.
Victor Saad believes there’s something wrong with conventional higher education. A few years ago, Victor took a leap and wasn’t sure where he would land. He quit his job and set out to learn about how organizations can focus on people and flourish. Now a few years later, Victor leads an experiential learning community called Experience Institute where he helps students create their own higher education with the help of some of the most innovative companies and organizations in the world.
