Last February, the Egyptian-American intellectual Hussein Aboubakr Mansour wrote an article in which he considered the possibility of a new idea of Palestinian nationalism. The IDF was destroying Hamas. The remnant of the Palestinian Authority's legitimacy and trust among the frustrated Palestinians—already weak—was decaying at an accelerated rate. The grotesque complicity of UNRWA in Hamas's crimes might yet deal enough of a blow to the international Palestine-human-rights complex that Mansour could allow himself to hope that the old idea of Palestine might be susceptible to being replaced by something different, something more constructive. A consequence of Hamas activating a series of events that led to war and defeat and destruction might also lead to an opportunity to re-found Palestinian nationalism on healthier foundations.   One year later, after watching Palestinians in Gaza cheering the remains of the Bibas children, murdered in Gaza and then kept as monstrous ransom, Mansour recently revised the possibility of a renewed Palestinian nationalism, and in light of all that has transpired, came to a different conclusion altogether.   Today, Hussein Aboubakr Mansour, a research fellow at the Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism & Policy and contributor to Mosaic, joins Jonathan Silver to discuss his essay, “Why There Should Not Be a Palestine,” published on his Substack, the Abrahamic Critique and Digest.

Rusha Latif is an Egyptian-American researcher and author based in the San Fransisco Bay Area. In episode 44 of Tahrir Podcast, we discussed her book, “Tahrir's Youth: Leaders of a Leaderless Revolution,” (American University in Cairo Press, 2022) which explores the role of the Revolutionary Youth Coalition (RYC) in the 2011 Egyptian revolution. Rusha challenges the prevailing narrative that the revolution was spontaneous and leaderless, offering a compelling ethnographic study that highlights the organizational strategies and leadership dynamics within the RYC. The book delves into the personal and political stories of key youth leaders, examining how their diverse backgrounds and shared commitment shaped the revolutionary movement in Tahrir Square. Through their experiences, Latif provides critical insights into the potential of horizontal leadership and participatory democracy in revolutionary organizing. Tahrir's Youth not only preserves the voices of Egypt's youth revolutionaries but also offers lessons for future movements around the world, especially in understanding the complexities of leadership and the limits of grassroots mobilization.Episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/tOBCbOXe7m0Rusha's book: https://aucpress.com/9781649030207/Streaming everywhere! https://linktr.ee/TahrirPodcastReach out! Privacy - Marcus Soltice - Marcus Last Call at Dimitris - MacDonald Glisten - Marcus Everyone comes to jazz in their own way and growing up for me, that pathway to jazz came via the clarinet, bass clarinet and alto clarinet which I will not be playing for you on today's show. So when Todd Marcus and Virginia MacDonald made an appearance on our stage, it was a must attend for me. And they didn't disappoint.   Todd Marcus' straight-ahead bass clarinet playing has carved out a unique voice for the instrument in modern jazz. His music swings hard with both a fiery and introspective intensity but also maintains a strong lyrical sensibility. Marcus' compositions draw largely on straight-ahead jazz and classical influences but over recent years have also increasingly explored the Middle-Eastern sounds from his Egyptian-American heritage.    But wait, there's more! Todd is joined by Toronto based clarinetist Virginia MacDonald. A lauded clarinetist in her own right, Virginia has performed and composed on over a dozen Juno Award winning albums and helps lead the Canadian Jazz Collective.   Featuring Eric Kennedy on Drums, Steven Arnold on Bass, Hannah Mayer on Piano, Virginia MacDonald on Clarinet and Todd Marcus on Bass Clarinet, from July 12th, 2023, it's the Todd Marcus Quintet featuring Virginia MacDonald – Live at the Bop Stop. *) Israeli opposition parties agree to oust Netanyahu amid Gaza war Chairman of the Democrats Yair Golan has called on leaders of opposition parties to convene an emergency meeting to discuss the removal of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government. Golan said in a recorded message posted to his X account that “the complete lack of public trust in the government and decisions made solely based on political considerations compel ... to rise to the occasion”. In response to Golan's message, Israeli opposition leader and ex-PM Yair Lapid said they will continue to work with all parts of the opposition “until the disaster government that is destroying the country is overthrown”. *) Harris seeks to win over Arab American voters with high-profile hire Kamala Harris' campaign for US presidential bid has hired an Egyptian American lawyer and former Department of Homeland Security official to help lead outreach to Arab American voters. Brenda Abdelall would be tasked with shoring up support from the community angered with unwavering US support for Israel's war in Gaza. Arab American voters hold sway in some states that could help decide the November 5 election. *) France charges Telegram's Pavel Durov over alleged criminal use of app France has formally charged Pavel Durov, the founder and chief of Telegram, with a litany of violations related to the messaging app. The charges concern alleged crimes involving an organised group including “complicity in the administration of an online platform to enable an illicit transaction”. Russian-born Durov was arrested at Le Bourget airport outside Paris late Saturday and questioned in subsequent days under arrest by investigators. *) Allies' fear of escalation major roadblock to end Russian offensive: Kiev Ukraine's top diplomat has said that the biggest problem faced by Kiev as it battles Russia is that its allies are afraid of approving new policies to support Ukraine out of a fear of escalation. Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba's remarks came a day after Moscow said the West was “playing with fire” by considering allowing Kiev to strike deep into Russia. More than two and a half years since Russia's full-scale assault, Kiev is pushing the West to give it long-range weapons — and the authorization — to strike targets deep inside Russian territory. *) Sweden to prosecute two men over Quran burnings Swedish prosecutors have said they would put two men on trial for setting fire to the Quran in a series of incidents last year that prompted outrage in the Muslim world. The Swedish Prosecution Authority said the two men committed “offences of agitation against an ethnic or national group” on four separate occasions when burning a copy of Islam's holy book outside a mosque and in other public places. Sweden's domestic security service raised its terrorism alert level as a result of the burnings, while neighbouring Denmark, which also saw a spate of Quran burnings, tightened its legislation to outlaw the practice.

Egyptian American satirist and comedian Bassem Youssef was once known as “The Jon Stewart of Egypt,” after gaining notoriety for his criticism of the government during the 2011 Egyptian revolution. But it wasn't long before the doctor-turned-comedian was forced to leave his home country and start over in the United States.  Ten years later, as he ends the U.S. leg of a world tour for his new stand up show, he's gained a whole new crowd of supporters and critics — not for his comedy, but for his biting critique of U.S. policy in Gaza.  In this episode, Youssef sits down with host Kai Wright to tell the story of his turbulent ride as a political satirist in both the U.S. and Egypt — and the pressures he faced to be the voice of a movement.  Plus, we open our listener mailbag and get your responses to some of our recent shows.   Tell us what you think. Picture in the Sand by Peter Blauner https://amzn.to/3JeZeLP "On rare occasions I read a book that reminds me of why I fell in love with storytelling in the first place. This is such a book." ―Stephen King Peter Blauner's epic Picture in the Sand is a sweeping intergenerational saga told through a grandfather's passionate letters to his grandson, passing on the story of his political rebellion in 1950s Egypt in order to save his grandson's life in a post-9/11 world. When Alex Hassan gets accepted to an Ivy League university, his middle-class Egyptian-American family is filled with pride and excitement. But that joy turns to shock when they discover that he's run off to the Middle East to join a holy war instead. When he refuses to communicate with everyone else, his loving grandfather Ali emails him one last plea. If Alex will stay in touch, his grandfather will share with Alex – and only Alex – a manuscript containing the secret story of his own life that he's kept hidden from his family, until now. It's the tale of his romantic and heartbreaking past rooted in Hollywood and the post-revolutionary Egypt of the 1950s, when young Ali was a movie fanatic who attained a dream job working for the legendary director Cecil B. DeMille on the set of his epic film, The Ten Commandments. But Ali's vision of a golden future as an American movie mogul gets upended when he is unwittingly caught up in a web of politics, espionage, and real-life events that change the course of history. It's a narrative he's told no one for more than a half-century. But now he's forced to unearth the past to save a young man who's about to make the same tragic mistakes he made so long ago.About the author Peter Blauner is the author of eight novels, including SLOW MOTION RIOT, winner of an Edgar Allan Poe award for best first novel from Mystery Writers of America, and THE INTRUDER, a New York Times bestseller. He began his career as a journalist for New York magazine in the 1980s - covering crime, politics, and other kinds of bad behavior - and segued into writing fiction in the 1990s. His short fiction has been anthologized in BEST AMERICAN MYSTERY STORIES and on NPR's SELECTED SHORTS FROM SYMPHONY SPACE. In recent years, he has also written for several television shows, including Law & Order: SVU and the CBS series, Blue Bloods. His newest novel is SUNRISE HIGHWAY, published in September 2018, by Minotaur/St. Martin's Press. He lives in Brooklyn, N.Y. with his wife, author Peg Tyre.

In this episode, Dr. Mona introduces the podcast, sharing her family's journey to the U.S. and her experience growing up as an Egyptian American in the rural South. This led her to reclaim the inevitable question “What ARE you?” to asking herself "Who am I?" and explore connection in various forms as a theater kid: 1. Self: Theater freed her to explore and understand herself better. 2. Interpersonal: Theater fostered close friendships and unconditional support. 3. Community: Theater provided a sense of community belonging through shared purpose. 4. Something Bigger: Theater allowed them to connect with an audience beyond themselves. These experiences shaped her understanding of the four types of belonging based on connection in four life areas: (1) with ourselves, (2) within impersonal relationships, (3) in communities, and (4) with larger systems. Dr. Mona's mental health research shows that belonging encompasses being seen, embraced, and celebrated, and how integrating those components to the four life areas impacts identity and sense of belonging. The four types of belonging are self, interpersonal, community, universal. This podcast explores how the four types of belonging shape human experiences. Listeners will hear a wide array of stories, experiences of belonging gaps, and how they impact identities. Topics will include belonging in various contexts, such as relationships, family, career, various identities, and more. When photographer Sarah Sharaf-Eldien contacted me about discussing her new book, Mālama Maui, which showcases the island and the musicians who play there, I knew I had to have her on. Especially since 100% of the profits from the book will be donated to the Maui United Way Fire Disaster Relief Fund. After a chance meeting, Sarah landed a music photography job most photographers would consider a dream, working alongside Mick Fleetwood, legendary drummer of the band Fleetwood Mac. This led to Sarah working closely with not only local music artists but internationally acclaimed music superstars as well.  It only seemed natural to her to use the photos from that time in her life to help with the relief effort in some way. "The word 'Mālama' in the Hawaiian language means 'to serve, honor, protect, and care for.' The wildfires' heartbreaking devastation left hundreds of families displaced, countless businesses destroyed, and a tragic toll of lives lost. It is my hope that the photographs I've presented in Mālama Maui will preserve treasured memories, celebrate moments of magic, and cherish a sense of community that perseveres even in the face of adversity," says Sharaf-Eldien. "To the Ohana of Maui who have lost this historical part of their homeland, I wish Ka Lā Hiki Ola – the dawning of a new day. I sincerely hope that the funds raised from the sales of my book will contribute to the families and individuals who need our support, and will assist in the preservation and rebuilding efforts of Maui and Lahaina." Exploring the specificities of a diaspora while also calling upon ancestral experiences is just one of the many threads Maha Ahmed weaves through her poetry. Like many members of diasporic communities, Maha's experiences as an Egyptian American do not always resemble the grossly generalized “immigrant story.” We had the opportunity to chat with Maha about writing herself out of this pigeonhole, as well as how she experiences life as a student, scholar, and poet. She received her MFA at the University of Oregon, and is now a literature and creative writing PhD candidate at the University of Houston (Go Coogs!). She specializes in colonial Egypt, Arab-American diasporic literature, and Arabic to English translation. We talked with her about Rusted Radishes, a Beirut-based literary magazine, and the big-city-but-small-world way she was offered the position as its poetry editor. We dive deep into the US-centric and profoundly skewed notion that immigrants' stories only matter once they land on US soil. It is exactly for that reason, Maha insists, people of the diaspora can acknowledge ancestral ties to a place even when it may feel uncomfortable to do so with a hyphenated or dual identity. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) is alleging that Rock Capital's purchase of Subway amounts to a monopoly which will lead to higher sandwich prices—the private equity firm already owns sandwich shops Jimmy John's and Schlotzky's. The Federal Trade Commission is now investigating the $10 billion acquisition. As Timothy P. Carney notes, how could this acquisition be considered a monopoly: “Consider that Chick-fil-A enjoyed $16 billion in sales in 2021, which is equal to Subway-plus-Arby's-plus Jimmy John's” and that “non-sandwiches, of course, compete with sandwiches,” concluding that there is no way to honestly determine Rock Capital has a monopoly like Sen. Warren suggests. Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) seemingly agreed with Phillips' suggestion—and went one step further calling for the Biden Administration to retaliate massively against Iran after its proxies launched numerous attacks against U.S. personnel in the region. Egypt's Defense Ministry had turned to an unusual figure to help arrange transport of the prized hardware: Wael Hana, an Egyptian American businessman who had previously run a trucking business, a gas station and a truck stop along a gritty, industrial strip in northern New Jersey… Eight years later, Hana's ties to the Egyptian government are under a bright spotlight. After a years-long investigation, U.S. authorities charged him in September with paying bribes to Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) and his wife, Nadine Menendez, in exchange for actions that benefited Egypt, including Menendez's promise to help keep military aid flowing to the North African nation. Hana, 40, lavished the couple with gold bars, checks and household furnishings between 2018 and 2022, prosecutors allege, while helping to introduce the senator to Egyptian military and intelligence officers and serving as a go-between for their communications.” You can read the full report from Shawn Boburg, Claire Parker, Terrence McCoy, and Marina Dias here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/2023/11/27/bob-menendez-wael-hana-egypt/ Annoyed by the sound of crunching chips during Zoom conference calls? On October 7, Hamas terrorists recorded themselves in a state of joyous excitement to document their murder of so many Jews. But over the ensuing weeks, that emotion has given way to another emotion: pity for the Palestinians as passive victims of Israeli aggression. The men instigated this war are now seen as victims of this war, occupied, displaced, not murderers but among the murdered. That transformation is our focus of this episode of the Tikvah Podcast. As it happens, that transformation is not unique to the Hamas attacks of October 2023. It is a pattern of Palestinian transformation that can be observed throughout the history of Israel. This is one of the distinguishing features of the Palestinian predicament, according to the Israeli writer Shany Mor, and it's one of the core themes of a big essay he wrote for us at Mosaic in November 2023, called “Ecstasy and Amnesia in the Gaza Strip.” On November 15, Mosaic editor Jonathan Silver convened a discussion of Mor's essay, along with the Egyptian-American writer Hussein Aboubakr, and the Israeli journalist Haviv Rettig Gur. This week's podcast brings you that conversation. Musical selections in this podcast are drawn from the Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, op. 31a, composed by Paul Ben-Haim and performed by the ARC Ensemble.

She moved to the U.S. when she was 23 and a few years later, she started writing fiction in English. In a beautiful article  written for LitHub a few months ago, Rajia reflected on what switching tongues meant for her and for her creativity, and how it gave her more artistic freedom. In this episode of Chosen Tongue, we chatted about the emotional impact of choosing English to share her point of view and her story as a Muslim woman in the U.S., Raja's fascination with Nabokov as a translingual writer, and how her sense of humour may or may not have recovered from her switch to English.
