This week we're joined by Aaron Reichlin-Melnick (@ReichlinMelnick) from the American Immigration Council to talk about how we're ignoring the law when it comes to appointing heads of DHS, Customs and Border Protection (or is it patrol?), what's going on in Portland, and why we need a healthy dose of skepticism when it comes to anything coming from DHS. CBP did an oopsies and lied in federal court.  CBP oopsies and lies about the border.  CBP oopsies and loses track of children.  When Enterprise picks you up (to take you to the gulag), what kind of van do you hope they use?  Check out the Michael Brooks Show if you haven't already. The Enterprise Theme. The main title sequence is very important for establishing a show's tone and identity. With limited changes over the course of the series, it can become highly memorable and sometimes takes on a life of its own. Star Trek has had some of the most memorable, thanks in part to the music. When Enterprise rolled around, however, many fans were outraged when they heard "Where My Heart Will Take Me." The theme for the new series was a rock ballad? Had lyrics? Was originally written for the 1998 film Patch Adams? Sacrilege! In this episode of Melodic Treks, host Brandon-Shea Mutala takes a look at the song originally title "Faith of the Heart," the careers of the song's writer, Dianne Warren, and vocalist, tenor Russell Watson. In addition to the two versions used for Enterprise, we showcase three others that have been released, as well as Dennis McCarthy's vocal-free variant, "Archer's Theme." Romulans on Enterprise. First introduced in the Original Series episode "Balance of Terror," the Romulans became a lengendary villain within Star Trek lore. The conflict between humans and Romulans is also lengendary despite never having been played out on screen. When Enterprise decided to bring Romulans into the show in the second-season episode "Minefield," they faced a huge challenge in keeping with canon. TOS established that humans had never seen Romulans prior to the late 23rd century. How do you tell a compelling story and stay true to that? Even more difficult, how do you establish a Romulan plot directly involving our characters in Season Four without them ever coming face-to-face? In this episode of Warp Five we're joined by Tommy Kraft, writer and executive producer of the Enterprise-era film Star Trek: Horizon, to discuss Romulans in Star Trek and Romulans on Enterprise, from their first appearance in "Minefield" to the mysterious coda of "Kir'Shara." And, of course, we discuss the deeper plot involving Romulans in "Babel One," "United," and "The Aenar."

Xenophobia and The Coalition of Planets. When Enterprise began we all expected that—as a prequel to the Star Trek we already knew—the series might end with the founding of the Federation. Unfortunately the story was cut short and we never got to see those events play out. We did, however, get one step closer with the final two episodes set in the 22nd century, “Demons” and “Terra Prime.” In the aftermath of the Xindi scare many on Earth were understandably cautious about joining the galactic community. And in true historic form, this caution fueled the fire of racism and hatred. In this episode of Warp Five Christopher Jones and Kate Walsh discuss the central theme of the final two-parter—xenophobia—and how John Frederick Paxton’s Earth-first movement, Terra Prime, embodies the challenges that always have—and always will—stand between us and progress. We also discuss the final moments of character development in the series and whether these two episodes are the finale to Enterprise rather than “These Are the Voyages.”

Season One Highs and Lows. When Enterprise premiered it was seen as an attempt to breath new life into a franchise that had produced fourteen years of stories set in the same time period. While The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager each had their own unique take on the 24th century, they shared the same Starfleet, the same technology, and the same crowded political landscape. By the time “Endgame” rolled around, there was—to many observers—a sense of fatigue creeping in. So changing the game by going back in time presented an opportunity to really shake Star Trek up. But it was risky, and whether it was a success or failure is the topic of much debate. Where did the writers and the creative team hit a home run? Where did they strike out? In this episode of Warp Five hosts Christopher Jones and Kate Walsh discuss the highs and lows of Enterprise’s first season.
