Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/beartalk/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Dr. Casey Grover explores the history, neuroscience, and treatment approaches for methamphetamine use disorder, highlighting how methamphetamine releases more dopamine than any other known substance.• Methamphetamine was widely used during World War II by German, Japanese, and Allied forces to enhance performance• Modern meth production shifted from ephedra to P2P method, creating cheaper, more potent meth with worse psychiatric effects• Meth causes dopamine release up to 1,400 ng/dL of dopamine compared to cocaine (400), sex (200), and food (150), severely damaging reward centers• Many methamphetamine users have undiagnosed ADHD and are inadvertently self-medicating• Effective medications include bupropion, topiramate, atomoxetine, viloxazine, guanfacine, and mirtazapine• Contingency management (reward-based incentives) shows significant efficacy for methamphetamine addiction treatment• Combination therapies using bupropion with naltrexone show promise for reducing meth use• Treating underlying mental health conditions and providing housing/social support remains essential for recoveryTo contact Dr. Grover: ammadeeasy@fastmail.com

This week, I'm sharing my experience of taking on the Ice Bucket Challenge. You might remember this trend from 2014, which remarkably raised millions for ALS, known here in the UK as motor neuron disease. Now, in 2025, students at the University of South Carolina have revived it as the #SpeakYourMIND Ice Bucket Challenge, with a vital new focus: to normalise conversations around mental health and raise crucial funds.  Inspired by this, and since braving the icy water myself, I wanted to use this platform to further amplify their important message.  This initiative resonates deeply with me because mental health is something that touches every single one of us. To think otherwise is like suggesting someone doesn't have physical health – we all do, and our mental well-being, with its own complexities, deserves equal awareness and proactive attention. While acknowledging the significant challenges of mental illness, just like physical health exists on a spectrum, fostering a greater understanding and open dialogue around our mental health can, I hope, lead to improved overall happiness and resilience. It's about recognizing that good mental health equips us all to better navigate life's inevitable ups and downs.Warning: I touch on the subject of death by suicide in this episode. Please reach out to a professional if this or any other element of the episode has triggered something that needs some external support. It's way too important not to. A few links that could be of use:www.samaritans.orgwww.mind.orgzerosuicidealliance.com/suicide-awareness-training Usual address for any thoughts, comments or observations damian@effectivechallenge.com.  Please let me know if you decide to take on the Ice Bucket Challenge 2025 yourself.

The Conversation Formula – 7:50 What are some examples of simple questions to ask in social, romantic, or professional environments to start a conversation?  Why is it important to focus on "we" moments in conversations rather than just talking about yourself? What questions should you avoid in conversation? What Should You Say Next – 21:24  Why should you avoid asking questions over and over again, and what should you say after someone answers your question? If curiosity is the key to great conversations, how do you cultivate your own curiosity so conversations don't feel awkward and forced? What topics should you avoid when talking to someone new? Become Unforgettable – 27:57 How do you create a positive, memorable impression so people never forget you and look forward to spending time with you? What exercise can you use in a conversation to create a stronger bond with anyone? With all of these tips in mind, it's important to remember that building meaningful relationships still takes time and effort. It's not a one-time event; rather, it's an ongoing process that grows with each new connection. Working on developing meaningful relationships may bring success in the professional or personal goals desired. Nevertheless, it also requires a commitment to get out of your comfort zone, acknowledge different points of view, listen more than you talk, and ask thoughtful questions about the person and what they stand for. Ultimately, when we put care into connecting to others on a more focused level and look beyond our surface interests or intentions, we can create stronger connections that have a lasting impact on our lives.
