On this episode of Cooking Issues, the crew reunites for a wide-ranging, hilariously chaotic discussion that moves from Coachella cuisine to centrifuge-based butter experiments, press duck, and Ricardo Montalbán's chest. Dave is joined by John, Joe, Quinn, Jack, and Nastassia for musings on celebrity behavior, culinary nomenclature, and obscure French cheeses—all with a healthy dose of sarcasm and science.• Celebrity Chef Ego and Dining Etiquette – The group discusses how fame distorts behavior, including chefs and musicians, and the joy of witnessing celebrities treat restaurant staff with kindness—plus a few namedrops of not-so-gracious guests.• Naming the Centrifuge Butter Creation – Quinn recaps his Instagram poll on what to call the high-fat cream spun in a centrifuge. Ideas like “Heavy G,” “Astro Butter,” and “Roto Butter” are floated—and mostly rejected by Dave, who wants a name that doesn't mislead consumers into thinking it's traditional butter.• Paris Food and Shopping Recommendations – The episode wraps with a deep dive into Paris: cheese shops (Barthélemy, La Coop), restaurants (Tour d'Argent's pressed duck, Chez L'Ami Jean, Le Repaire de Cartouche), and kitchenware store Dehillerin. Plus, Dave warns against raw mussels on Parisian seafood platters—twice burned, forever cautious.• Bonus Tangents – Includes musings on ambergris, legal cheese presses, and why Dave never wants to pluck a bird again. Also: why “Pepe Le Pew” absolutely should be canceled. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The guys dig into the episode's unique setting, the ethics of honor killings, and how the show handles cultural sensitivity (or doesn't). Is this an underrated gem or a misstep in a sombrero?

When we talk about The Naked Gun (1988), we're diving headfirst into a comedy treasure chest—one filled with absurdity, brilliant wordplay, and visual gags that just don't stop. This Zucker, Abrahams, and Zucker (ZAZ) film, starring the ever-stoic Leslie Nielsen as the bumbling detective Lt. Frank Drebin, stands as one of the defining examples of slapstick parody. It's a film that has aged remarkably well, continuing to resonate with new audiences and reminding those who saw it back in 1988 just how funny an entirely ridiculous movie can be.Plot and Storytelling: Simplicity at its FunniestAt its core, The Naked Gun is a detective story—a genre that's been spoofed many times but never quite with the same flair as this film. The plot revolves around Lt. Drebin, a man dedicated to solving crimes but utterly incapable of doing so with any amount of skill or professionalism. In The Naked Gun, Drebin is tasked with thwarting a plot to assassinate Queen Elizabeth II during her visit to Los Angeles. The story quickly evolves into a chaotic blend of police procedural satire, ridiculous missteps, and wildly inappropriate antics, all the while managing to maintain an air of sincerity, thanks to Nielsen's deadpan performance. The film plays it smart by not worrying too much about the intricacies of the plot. Instead, it focuses on building its jokes around the absurdity of the situation and the cluelessness of its characters. It's almost as if the ZAZ team were saying, “We know the plot's thin, but you're here for the laughs, right?” And laugh we do—from the first moment to the iconic final act at the baseball stadium. Whether it's a visual gag or a clever line of dialogue, every scene is packed with humour. The Genius of Leslie Nielsen: Deadpan PerfectionBefore The Naked Gun, Leslie Nielsen had a long career in more serious roles but found his true calling as a comedic actor in Airplane! (1980)—also directed by ZAZ. That film launched Nielsen's second wind as a parody star, and his portrayal of Frank Drebin cemented his legacy as the king of deadpan humour. The genius of Nielsen lies in his ability to deliver the most ridiculous lines with the gravitas of a Shakespearean actor. There's no winking at the camera or over-the-top physical comedy; Nielsen plays it as straight as possible, making the absurdity around him even funnier.Take, for example, one of the film's most famous lines: “Nice beaver.” Drebin says this with no awareness of the double entendre, but when Jane Spencer (Priscilla Presley) responds by handing him a literal stuffed beaver, the joke lands perfectly. This sort of naive, deadpan delivery that Nielsen mastered makes Frank Drebin one of the most lovable oafs in cinematic history.Supporting Cast: A Perfect EnsembleOf course, Nielsen is supported by a stellar cast, each contributing to the film's comic rhythm. Priscilla Presley plays Jane Spencer, Drebin's love interest, and her straight-laced performance brilliantly complements Nielsen's obliviousness. The chemistry between Presley and Nielsen feels oddly genuine, grounding the film just enough to allow the wild antics around them to feel even more surreal.George Kennedy, as Drebin's partner, Captain Ed Hocken, provides another layer of deadpan delivery, playing the more serious cop who happens to be swept along by Drebin's incompetence. Meanwhile, Ricardo Montalbán, as the villain Vincent Ludwig, brings an elegant, almost Bond-villain-style menace to the role, perfectly contrasting Drebin's clumsy crime-fighting attempts. Montalbán's role is particularly memorable for how seriously he seems to take his part—his dignity adding to the hilarity of the situations he finds himself in.Slapstick and Sight Gags: Nonstop and RelentlessZucker, Abrahams, and Zucker excel in their unique brand of humour, and The Naked Gun is no exception. The film is filled with sight gags that reward multiple viewings. For instance, in the opening scene, Drebin foils an international conspiracy while hilariously bumbling his way through a fight with some of the world's most notorious villains. The film doesn't waste a moment to make you laugh—whether it's Drebin inadvertently causing chaos during a press conference or his notorious attempt to sing the national anthem at a baseball game. One standout moment is the baseball stadium scene, where Drebin, disguised as an umpire, ends up calling the game. This sequence showcases Nielsen's impeccable timing and the film's mastery of physical comedy. Drebin's complete misunderstanding of how baseball works leads to a series of increasingly ridiculous events, all while keeping the assassination plot in the background. It's a perfect example of how The Naked Gun balances slapstick with satire, layering gags on top of each other for maximum effect.Pop Culture and Cultural Impact: The Birth of a ClassicThe Naked Gun was an instant hit when it was released, not just because it was funny, but because it tapped into something fresh at the time: the spoof genre had been gaining steam in the 1980s, but few films did it as relentlessly or as successfully as The Naked Gun. Its success spawned two sequels—The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear (1991) and The Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult (1994)—both continued Drebin's absurd adventures. But the film's influence extended beyond its sequels. It paved the way for other parody films, helping solidify the ZAZ brand of comedy, which had already been popularised by Airplane! and Top Secret! (1984). It also led to an entire generation of comedies that relied on rapid-fire jokes and visual gags, like Hot Shots! (1991) and Scary Movie (2000). Even modern-day comedy shows, like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, owe a debt to The Naked Gun for its ability to blend procedural elements with comedy. The Enduring Legacy of Frank DrebinThe Naked Gun remains a beloved comedy classic over three decades after its release. Part of that is due to its unique combination of clever wordplay, slapstick humour, and pure silliness, but it's also because of the character of Frank Drebin. In a sea of competent, smooth-talking detectives, Drebin is a breath of fresh air—a man who's as clueless as he is sincere. There's something timeless about how Leslie Nielsen approaches the role, never once letting Drebin become a caricature but always playing him with heart, no matter how foolish he seems. For fans of parody, The Naked Gun is essential viewing. It's the kind of film you can watch repeatedly and still find something new to laugh at. Whether you're a die-hard fan revisiting the movie or a newcomer discovering Drebin's antics for the first time, The Naked Gun never fails to deliver pure comedic gold. So, if you haven't yet revisited this classic, now's the time. Just be prepared to laugh—over and over again.

With special -- and returning! -- guest Owen Croak, Anna and Derek discuss the expectations we have of ourselves at different ages, Ricardo Montalbán proving that age is just a number when it comes to ripped pecs and so much more during their chat about Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982). Connect with '80s Movie Montage on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram! The idea for the podcast came when they realized just how much they talk – a lot – when watching films from their favorite cinematic era. Their wedding theme was “a light nod to the ‘80s,” so there's that, too. Both hail from the Midwest but have called Los Angeles home for several years now. Anna is a writer who received her B.A. in Film/Video from Columbia College Chicago and M.A. in Film Studies from Chapman University. Her dark comedy short She Had It Coming was an Official Selection of 25 film festivals with several awards won for it among them. Derek is an attorney who also likes movies. It is a point of pride that most of their podcast episodes are longer than the movies they cover.Owen Croak is one of those screenwriters who thought he was too responsible to be a “real” writer. Then he had emergency surgery, got fired and decided he'd rather spend his time writing about time-travelers, aliens and superheroes. His work has placed in the 2022 Creative Screenwriting Unique Voices competition and in the Austin Film Festival Script competition. He's also had essays published in the Los Angeles Times and on StarTrek.com.

Khaaaaan vi bjuda er på mer Star Trek? Klart vi Khan! (Vi är här hela veckan!) Denna gång tar vi oss an filmseriens höjdpunkt Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, eller Star Trek II – Khans vrede som den kallades i Sverige back in the days.

The 1982 classic Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is considered one of the best films in the beloved franchise. The movie follows the classic Star Trek formula of exploration and discovery but adds a thrilling plot and memorable characters to make it stand out from other films. The movie begins with the introduction of the villain Khan Noonien Singh, played by the legendary Ricardo Montalbán. Khan is a genetically engineered superhuman exiled to the planet Ceti Alpha V by Captain James T. Kirk. Khan has been waiting for revenge ever since, and the stage is set for the grand finale. The action begins at the movie's start as Khan launches a surprise attack on the starship USS Reliant. The crew of the Reliant is taken by surprise, and the ship is severely damaged. Khan is ultimately defeated by Kirk and his crew, but not before he reveals a terrifying secret: a powerful weapon hidden in a dead planet. Kirk and his crew must now find a way to stop Khan from using the weapon to destroy the Federation. In their quest, they face life-threatening dangers and sacrifice to protect the Federation. Ultimately, the crew is triumphant, and Khan is left defeated. The movie is a thrilling adventure that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats. Even though it is nearly 40 years old, the film still holds up remarkably well. The cast's performances are top-notch, and the special effects are still impressive today. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is an action-packed classic that will please any science fiction fan. Not only is it an entertaining movie, but it also serves as a reminder of the original spirit of the franchise and the power of friendship and teamwork.

In this episode Mark talks about one of his favourite "Star Trek" films, and one of his favourite films of all time: the 1982 American science fiction film "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" directed by Nicholas Meyer. The story of the film sees Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and the crew of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 face-off against an old adversary of theirs by the name of Khan Noonien Singh (played by Ricardo Montalbán) - a genetically engineered criminal from the 20th Century - who in his opinion was marooned with his crew and his beloved wife 15 years before by then Captain Kirk on a planet that over time was transformed from a world filled with life to one that now resembles a wasteland. However, when Khan learns that there is a secret "Genesis Device" that has been created capable of transforming a lifeless planetoid into a perfect haven for his people, Khan decides to steal a starship in order to obtain this new device that could be seen as a weapon - and Khan also decides to impart his wrath of revenge against the now Admiral Kirk for all the loss that has been sustained. The film once again stars Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, George Takei, Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols, and also stars Bibi Besch, Merritt Butrick, Paul Winfield, and Kirstie Alley. And the phenomenon score was composed by the late great James Horner. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message

This week is about smuggling drugs, or rather the U.S. Govt's history with increasing scrutiny at our borders, with drugs as a justification. Customs used to be more casual, a question about what you might have purchased and what you'll be declaring. But as airports became more militarized in defense of drugs and terrorists, customs itself became more of an inspection process. The record this week is a series of rarely heard Radio Spots that were prepared to let you know about these increased measures, featuring Jack Webb from Dragnet and a beautiful sounding Ricardo Montalbán, speaking in Spanish. You are also introduced to the head of U.S. Customs Vernon D Acree, whose wonderfully uptight voice completes the long-awaited threesome for J. Edgar Hoover and Richard Daley. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is a 1982 American science fiction film directed by Nicholas Meyer and based on the television series Star Trek. It is the second film in the Star Trek film series, and is a sequel to Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979). The plot features Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and the crew of the starship USS Enterprise facing off against the genetically engineered tyrant Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalbán), a character who first appeared in the 1967 Star Trek episode "Space Seed". When Khan escapes from a 15-year exile to exact revenge on Kirk, the crew of the Enterprise must stop him from acquiring a powerful terraforming device named Genesis. The film is the beginning of a story arc that continues with the film Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984) and concludes with the film Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986). After the lackluster critical response to the first film, series creator Gene Roddenberry was forced out of the sequel's production. Executive producer Harve Bennett wrote the film's original outline, which Jack B. Sowards developed into a full script. Meyer completed its final script in twelve days, without accepting a writing credit. Meyer's approach evoked the swashbuckling atmosphere of the original series, a theme reinforced by James Horner's musical score. Leonard Nimoy had not intended to have a role in the sequel, but was enticed back on the promise that his character would be given a dramatic death scene. Negative test audience reaction to Spock's death led to significant revisions of the ending over Meyer's objections. The production team used various cost-cutting techniques to keep within budget, including utilizing miniature models from past projects and reusing sets, effects footage, and costumes from the first film. Among the film's technical achievements is being the first feature film to contain a sequence created entirely with computer graphics. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan was released in North America on June 4, 1982, by Paramount Pictures. It was a box office success, earning US$97 million (equivalent to about $257M in 2019) worldwide and setting a world record for its first-day box office gross. Critical reaction to the film was positive; reviewers highlighted Khan's character, the film's pacing, and the character interactions as strong elements. Negative reactions focused on weak special effects and some of the acting. The Wrath of Khan is considered by many to be the best film in the Star Trek series, and is often credited with renewing substantial interest in the franchise.

Rafe and Steve talk to "Hazard to Ya Booty" Funk Band members Ryan Stewart and Pat Alexander about Ricardo Montalbán's second grade experience, altitude sickness, and the globally common comedic language of bowel control. (It actually does relate to the topic, but if you want to skip the stories about #2, then start at 25:00 minutes in).  Along the way, they also discuss this episode's topic: Destiny or Free Will? Ryan and Pat were great guests and we delved into some fantastic conversation about income inequality, politics, hard work in comedy/music, and answering your life's calling.  Check out Hazard to Ya' Booty's album "The Precipice" on iTunes, Amazon, or Spotify. Matter Stream: Science, Creativity, and the World Inspired by Star Trek

John Tenuto. Few characters have endured in the hearts of Star Trek fans like Khan Noonien Singh. And one of the primary reasons is the man who portrayed him: Ricardo Montalbán, the Mexican born actor who became one of America’s most enduring figures of radio, theatre, television, and film. Despite making only two appearances in the franchise, Montalbán influenced Star Trek in a way few have. Yet his contributions to entertainment extend far beyond the bounds of the 23rd century. Facing many obstacles in his life, Montalbán defied the odds to become an inspiration to millions. In this episode of Matter Stream we’re joined by John Tenuto, sociology professor at the College of Lake County in Grayslake, Illinois. This month Tenuto will be presenting three special events celebrating the life of Montalbán, the history of Star Trek fandom, and the making of Montalbán’s most famous film: The Wrath of Khan.
