Send us a textIn this brief episode we talk about the new series that will begin on June 11, 2025. Plus we also talk about the future of this broadcast. This look back at Bob Dole will also mark the end of our look at the Greatest Generation of Americans that overcame a depression, fought World War 2 , and came home to build the American Century while winning the Cold War. Bob Dole's story is their final story on the national political stage. After Bob Dole walks away in 1996, this generation will begin their gradual fading away and into history. We are honored to tell this story about this man who was a true American Hero in every sense of the word. We are not sure where this podcast will be going from here. So, while we lay out the plan for the next 3 seasons of our show, we are also listening for any ideas about the future or whether we are at the end of our run. We look forward to hearing from you as this story unfolds. Robert Beattie was many things: an architect, a designer of iconic public buildings on Long Island, and a decorated World War II veteran. But most importantly, he was the father of today's guest, Richard Beattie. So we're celebrating Father's Day by celebrating the life and work of Robert Beattie. As an architect, Beattie's specialty was mid-century modern architecture. Working with clean lines, natural light, and an appreciation of the surrounding landscape, he designed many iconic buildings in our area. If you live in the town of Islip, you'll know his MacArthur Airport terminal, the core buildings of Suffolk County Community College's Ammerman Campus, and St. Lawrence Church in Sayville. Richard takes us on a tour of his father's buildings and details his life. Robert was part of the Greatest Generation, earning a Silver Star as an Alamo Scout in the Philippines. He got his start in architecture with the firm Shreve, Lamb & Harmon in New York City. Robert then founded his own firm, Dobecki & Beattie, and embarked on a storied career on Long Island. We discuss the changing architectural landscape of Long Island in the 1960s, the Beattie family's connections to Oakdale, and Robert's devotion to being a father and an architect. Send us a textOn June 11, 2025, our podcast will embark on the final story in the original thesis we intended to tell when we started this podcast nearly five years ago. On June 11, 1996, exactly 29 years ago, we saw Bob Dole resign his Senate seat, giving one of the most important speeches we ever heard, to pursue full time his bid for the White House. He would be the last of "The Greatest Generation" to do so. In 1992, in the midst of a recession, the Republican Party would be swept out of power losing not only the White House, but the House and Senate as well. On the Federal level of Government, one man stood alone, as the leader of his party. That man was also the last of the World War 2 generation to be left on the national stage. He was Senate Minority leader Robert J. Dole of Kansas. Over the next three seasons we will tell his story and the story of the rise of the modern Republican Party. It will be the final story of National leadership for the generation of people who built the American Century. For all the attention a new generation of Republican leaders would garner, it was in fact, Bob Dole, so often in the shadow of the giants of his age, from Nixon to Reagan to Bush, and who would largely be forgotten in the coming era of Gingrich , Clinton, the second Bush, McCain, and now Donald Trump, who actually led the Republican Party out of the political wilderness and back to power in both houses of Congress, and he was able to do it even as his own efforts to win the Presidency fell short. It was a remarkable final chapter for this greatest of generations and the opening chapter in the career of our host Randal Wallace. This series will be that story too, a story straight from the heart of our host over these next three seasons. As he was an eyewitness, to the last campaign of the very man who would become that last living symbol of the bygone era led by the Greatest Generation. Join us for : Season 15 - Bob Dole 1993 - 1995 The Last Man StandingSeason 16 - Bob Dole The Life that Brought Him There &- The 1995 Resurrection of Bill Clinton Season 17 - Bob Dole 1996 The Campaign of a Lifetime. Send us a textIn this final episode of our 14th Season, we watch one era begin and another end. We will tune into the beginning of the Inaugural Ceremony, hearing the great Senator Wendell Ford greet the crowd and introduce the players, which will include, the Reverend Billy Graham who will give the invocation. Then we will listen in as Governor William Jefferson Clinton of Arkansas, the first Baby Boomer President, takes the oath of office and assumes the title 42nd President of the United States. Then we will hear him deliver his Inaugural Address before we fade out and over to the final ceremonies of the tenure of the now former President George H. W. Bush. We will follow him out to the West side of the Capitol as he is escorted by President and Mrs. Clinton out to the Helicopter which will fly him out to Andrews Air Force Base. We will hear some final assessments from ABC News reporter Britt Hume, followed by ABC News Anchormen Peter Jennings and David Brinkley, some final thoughts from our host Randal Wallace, and then the brief departure events at Andrews Air Force Base as President Bush and Mrs. Bush fly off for Houston , Texas and their long retirement. Then we will hear some final thoughts from the President himself as we say farewell to him and his generation of Americans at the end of the era. An era that built the American Century and created the enormously powerful and prosperous country we live in today. But what we didn't know then, that we do know now, is that the Greatest Generation would have one more story to tell, and that will be the subject of our next three season series. Send us a textIn today's Daily Drop, Peaches wades through 20+ pages of Pentagon memos so you don't have to—and the headlines are as wild as you'd expect. From the DoD accelerating AI and electronic warfare for SOF teams (because robot war is here), to the Pentagon trying to fire every transgender troop in 30 days (seriously), it's another day in America's defense soap opera. Also: the Space Force is debating whether orbital refueling is even worth it, even though it sounds like the coolest sci-fi thing ever; the B-52 radar upgrade blows past budget (shocker); and the Air Force finally admits the CV-22 Osprey might never hit full capability again (gasp). Send us a textIn the second installment of the Election Night from 1992, we see the official changing of the guard. It is at this moment, on election night, that one generation of leadership gives way to another. The World War 2 Presidents, that had served from two generations, those who ran the war : Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, and Dwight Eisenhower, followed by the generation of leaders who were troops in the war : John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and George H. W. Bush, were now finally leaving the center stage of American politics, or so it seemed. 10 United States Presidents in all, would now be replaced by the nations' first Baby Boomer President. Bill Clinton will win on this night. In this episode, we will hear from all the candidates for President and Vice President , but one, and we will watch as the Greatest Generation, symbolized by George Bush, gracefully leaves the stage. Then we will hear the national address from Little Rock, on the steps of the Arkansas Capitol, as Bill Clinton begins to take the reigns of power, inheriting a country that now stood alone as the leading economic and military super power on Earth. SHLTMM CAN NOW BE HEARD ON YOUTUBE:YOUTUBE CHANNEL LINK: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoUWxgQECqrMqI1ylVH9DpwAs I mention in the introduction of my show, Gramps Jeffrey, I believe is the first grandfather I've interviewed on SHLTMM, so that's pretty great. I was so happy to hear how engaged he is with his grandchildren.Gramps' mother's name was Faye and she really left quite an impression on him and his brother. Faye was the youngest of 3 children, with two older brothers. Growing up during the Depression and WWII, known as The Greatest Generation, was a very challenging time, "and my mother lived up to every expectation", continues Gramps. While raising her two boys, she insisted they turn off the tv and read-no if, ands or buts. "We loved our mother," says Gramps, referring to him and his brother. They grew up in a small town in Ohio, about 50 miles outside Columbus, where they were free to play outside and knew when to come home in time for dinner. He had relatives nearby as well, including lots of love and support from his grandmother and uncle.Gramps brags, "mom always had a positive attitude. Her glass was always half full and she was always looking at the 'bright side of life." That philosophy and her passion of reading certainly influenced Gramps and his interest in writing. It's clearly stayed with him even today because he continues to write and read to his 6 grandchildren."Mom would remind us regularly that we were very fortunate and had a good life, but that we can't forget other people. This world is hard and she knew it," remarks Gramps. Faye had learned many life lessons from her paternal grandmother who lost her husband suddenly when he was only 49. She was left to raise her children on her own, including Fay's dad. She also raised her nephew who had also lost his parents. But her grandmother was always smiling regardless of her hardships.Gramps Jeffrey is very concerned about the different parenting styles today. Most concerns him most and feels is most important for every child is 'one on one attention' from the parent. Gramps feels so blessed to have had such a devoted mother, and hopes that parents still take the time to put the phone down, turn the computer off and just sit and read or spend that precious time with your children. Gramps' mom gave him such a sense of security. "We could always go home and feel secure, you felt love, you felt protected," remarks Gramps about his mom. One of his mom's favorite quotes was "when you love, you will teach others how to love."Gramps Jeffrey is truly committed to sharing this message. He's got every little child on his mind in hopes that they get all the loving that they truly deserve.Gramps Jeffrey is his pen name. His real name is Marc Joseph. In this episode of Capital for Good we speak with veteran investor and climate activist Tom Steyer. Over twenty-five years, Steyer founded and ran Farallon Capital Management, a $36 billion multi-strategy global investment firm. In 2012 he stepped away from Farallon to dedicate his time, resources, and energy to mobilizing climate action: clean air and energy initiatives in California; climate focused ballot initiatives in numerous states; youth voter engagement and mobilization (NextGen America); and a 2020 Presidential run largely focused on the climate crisis. Today, Steyer is the co-executive chair of Galvanize Climate Solutions, a climate-focused investment firm, and the author of Cheaper, Faster, Better: How We'll Win the Climate War. We begin the interview by discussing Steyer's parents, both civically engaged members of the Greatest Generation. In his father's case, a lawyer who served in the Navy and then as a prosecutor at Nuremberg. Steyer describes World War II as a crucible moment for Americans — galvanizing collective action and a sense of being part of something larger than oneself. For Steyer, the climate fight is a similar calling. We discuss why, despite current political headwinds, the momentum behind the climate revolution — the transition to net zero via the development and adoption of low carbon technologies — is very much alive, well, and accelerating. In Steyer's view, this is because of the dramatic decline in costs of renewables — solar and wind are now the cheapest forms of energy — and because applied technologies like batteries and electric vehicles continue to improve in quality and cost, driving demand. “This is not eat your gruel,” he says. “It's cheaper, faster, better. When you put eight billion people on a problem, they solve it.” We also explore promising new technologies coming on-line, from geothermal energy and AI optimization of the electric grid to geosynthetic seawalls. While these new technologies will enable the transition, Steyer notes that “climate capitalism” also requires new rules and policies to speed innovation and deployment; ultimately this means paying for carbon pollution. He argues that despite objections to the idea of a “tax,” people are already paying — in the form of destruction to homes, businesses, livelihoods, health — though often it is the most vulnerable, those who have contributed the least to the problem, in the United States and around the world, who bear the cost. We conclude with a call to action. Historically, Steyer reminds us, “we've chosen to do the right things, even when they're hard, and that has always paid off for us, and it will always pay off for us. That is who we are, and that is where this world is going. This revolution is happening. Our job, as Americans, is to be at the forefront.” Thanks for Listening!
