It's a special News Day Tuesday! The MR Crew celebrate Michael Brooks' 41st birthday. First, they run through updates on Elon Musk's Trump interview, Ukraine's major offensive, Harris' momentum, Trump's newest fiascos (lawsuit, Epstein's plane, email hack), Harris' economic platform, Ilhan Omar's primary race, Netanyahu v. Gallant, and Israel's ceasefire obstruction. Then, they reflect on some highlights from Michael's career sent in from friends, family, and colleagues, watching his ever-relevant comments on the simplicity of opposing Israeli apartheid, admiring the birth of Right-Wing Mandela (and other iconic impressions), and touching on his appreciation for the poetry of the Right. They also watch him unpack concepts of liberation theology and cosmopolitan socialism, highlight some of your comments and stories, and so much more. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma listen to Trump accidentally throw Elon under the bus for union busting, break down JD Vance's newest controversy stemming from a project to bring jobs to Appalachia, and reflect with John from San Antonio on Michael's loyalty. JD Vance discusses Kamala's true colors, Jesse Ventura pulls no punches in addressing the Tim Walz-Stolen Valor non-controversy, and Tim Pool takes an Olympian to task for twerking, laughing, and, worst of all, enjoying it, plus, your calls and IMs! It's a special edition of the Majority Report: The MR Crew are celebrating the life of Michael Brooks, as his 40TH BIRTHDAY was yesterday. They're joined by a number of friends and former guests of The Michael Brooks Show to commemorate. Guests on the show today: Lisha Brooks, Michael's sister; Luke Mayville of Reclaim Idaho, TV, film, and video producer Artesia Balthrop, Drew Mikhael, scholar in the Centre for the Study of Ethnic Conflict at Queen's University Belfast, Ben Burgis, columnist at Jacobin and host of Give Them An Argument With Ben Burgis, and Bhaskar Sunkara, president of The Nation. Plus, some birthday wishes from other friends! Then, Sam, Emma, and the MR Crew are joined by countless guests as they share stories of the beauty, joy, strength, and righteousness that Michael brought into their lives, and the lives of countless others – touching on how he constantly welcomed people into his life, delivered masterful impersonations and impressions, influenced and connected with the politics of strangers and friends alike, grew his vision of cosmopolitan socialism, and so much more. FULL SHOW HERE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdfV77dQtKA&ab_channel=TheMajorityReportw%2FSamSeder The MR Crew join together to commemorate the 2nd anniversary of dear friend and colleague Michael Brooks's passing. They'll be joined to reminisce and remember Michael and his legacy by his sister Lisha, Joshua Kahn Russell, Wosny Lambre, Bhaskar Sunkara, Ben Burgis and David Griscom. Emma and Sam dive right into reflecting on Michael's entrance into their lives and the beauty and humility he brought to them. Lisha then joins as they reflect on the legacy of the Michael Brooks Show, and the power of his words and outlook reaching all the way back to his childhood, and Joshua Kahn Russell calls in from Peru on Michael's organic interest and ability to connect with people on myriad topics, even if that means mapping Simpson's characters' political relationships to the Springfield power plant. After exploring Michael's rapid and meaningful entrance into his life, Wosny walks through Michael's incredible grace (even in disagreement) and how that allowed him to open up so many people to his empathy and thoughts. Bhaskar and Sam dive deep into Michael's ability to create bits that intrinsically hit at his satirical critiques while building entire worlds around them, before expanding on Wosny's discussion about Michael's ability to unite critique and care. Ben Burgis walks through his relationship with Michael up until the final TMBS show, and his ability to engage people in topics that had no reason to be engaged with, and David Griscom joins as he and the crew reflect on some of Michael's most beautiful critiques and the ideas that sympathy is not solidarity and of being ruthless with systems, and kind to individuals. In the history of American politics, there has never been a movement rooted in improving the lives of working class and poor Americans that did not include Black people. What are the consequences of contemporary Black electoral Black politics being rooted in the corporate right wing of the Democratic party with a large number of White progressives to its left? How can working class Black politics be brought to life in order to challenge this reality. We will ask former Bernie Sanders communication director, Briahna Joy Gray that question and more.   About Briahna: After graduating from law school, Gray worked as a corporate litigator in New York City for Dewey Pegno & Kramarsky LLP and Stroock & Stroock & Lavan. She was also the host of Someone's Wrong on the Internet, a podcast that covers politics and pop culture. Gray was hired by The Intercept in 2018, and has also written columns for Rolling Stone, Current Affairs, The Guardian, and New York Magazine. She was a supporter of the Bernie Sanders 2016 presidential campaign and joined his 2020 campaign as his National Press Secretary. Gray has stated that she voted for Jill Stein in the 2016 presidential election.   After joining the Sanders campaign in March 2019, Gray became the host of Hear the Bern, a podcast sponsored by the campaign that features interviews with progressive celebrities, journalists, and political figures. Gray has also been featured on CBS News, MSNBC, Bloomberg News, The Majority Report with Sam Seder, The Michael Brooks Show, and Rising on The Hill TV.Gray appeared as a guest speaker at the Harvard Law Review Forum. In 2020, Gray was included in Fortune magazine's '40 Under 40' listing under the "Government and Politics" category. On April 13, 2020 after Bernie Sanders dropped out of the 2020 Democratic Party presidential primary, Gray stated on Twitter that she did not endorse the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. In response, Bernie Sanders distanced himself from her saying that “She is my former press secretary — not on the payroll.”Sanders also stated that it would be "irresponsible" not to vote for Joe Biden.   Since the conclusion of Bernie Sanders' 2020 Democratic primary campaign, Gray has returned to her role as contributing editor at Current Affairs in addition to co-hosting the Bad Faith podcast with Chapo Trap House co-host Virgil Texas. One of the podcast's most discussed episodes was an October 2020 debate with Noam Chomsky, who implored listeners to vote for Joe Biden as a second Trump presidency would be more detrimental for the world; Chomsky has referred to the Republican Party as one of the most dangerous organizations on Earth, largely due to the party's actions regarding the global climate crisis.Conversely, Gray and Texas argued that progressives should only be willing to vote for one of the major parties if certain standards are met.   Watch Briahna's Bad Faith Pod here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLNw2JNuTUWFdilpzOXLa5A   Thank you, guys, again for taking the time to check this out. I saw a tweet today that spoke to the sometimes contradictory tone that knowledgeable leftists can have towards the newly radicalized.  Like, some of us didn't spend our lives reading Marx, Chomsky, studying philosophy and thinking about radical change.  Some of didn't go university, and have only a U.S. propaganda influenced take on any alternative ways of approaching governing systems.    For many, regardless of age, the Bernie Sanders campaign was a radicalizing moment.  The thought that things like healthcare is a human right and not the privilege of the select few that have a job that offers employer paid healthcare.  Education shouldn't be a financial burden that is a must if you want to not just succeed in society, but exist in it.  So we should be ecstatic that new people are coming to the fold, not chastising them because they may not fit your stereotype of what you qualify as a proper "lefty".     In steps David Griscom from the The Michael Brooks Show and Jacobin.  His "Griscom's Economic Minute" segment on TMBS was where I first started to hear him speak.  He has a great way of explaining very important issues that affect the working class in a way that doesn't condescend his audience succinctly.  I also found out he's a big football fan.  I spoke with David a few days after the first presidential debate.  We spoke a bit on the debate, his love for Longhorn football, country music, and Marx.    Watch David Griscom on The Michael Brooks Show: https://youtu.be/3IphhJMr3Ns   Watch David Griscom on Jacobin:  https://youtu.be/WNXWJ0z-A1g   Thank you again for taking the time to check this out.  We truly appreciate it.  Please, we need your support to keep producing these shows.  Become a patron! Nancy Pelosi has been in congressional office since 1987.  In her 33 years as a Congresswoman, she has not only become Speaker of the House, but she's become one of, if not the most powerful people in politics.  She's a firebrand in the #Resistance Democratic establishment.  As the Trump administration has been an utter disaster of a presidency, Pelosi has done an amazing job at being the figurehead of tepid opposition.  A master of political theater with sarcastic claps and dramatic speech ripping, but she hasn't been a stalwart for the people she was put in office to represent.  She has exemplified the Corporate, neoliberal Democrat that has dominated the party since the ascension of Bill Clinton.     Finally, in 2018 Peolsi faced a strong challenge from her left.  An immigrant, and constitutional lawyer by the name of Shahid Buttar.  He was to be out New Hope. Buttar, a Democratic Socialist is running a truly progressive people funded campaign.  Like AOC,Jamaal Bowman and the many other progressive candidates, Buttar isn't taking any big corporate donations.  As of June 30th, he's raised over one million dollars.  The incumbent Pelosi has raised over 14 million dollars, not to mention the $87 millions she's helped raise for other establishment Democratic primary candidates.  Buttar understands the odds that are against him, and he's challenged the 33 year veteran to a debate.  She's ignored his attempts to go head to head.  Just last month Pelosi's debate dodging against Buttar garnered front page attention from the San Francisco Chronicle.      Exactly a week later the headlines for Buttar wouldn't read so well. He was accused of sexual harassment of an acquaintance from several years ago during his time in DC and to make matters worse, his former staffers accused Buttar of fostering an atmosphere of misogyny in his campaign. I've worked on this campaign because I believe this is an amazing chance to oust a powerful foe who's watched out for the corporate interests while people suffer.  The CARES Act was a pathetic attempt to help people that are struggling to survive in a time of economic uncertainty. Tens of millions of people are facing eviction and unemployment while the half-hearted CARES Act bailed out corporations to the tune of TRILLIONS.  Pelosi is portrayed as a progressive, but she's voted for the Patriot Act on multiple occasions, Bush and Trump tax cuts and military spending increases.  Her performative politics is great for talk show fodder, but her actions have made her nothing more than an courtier for corporate interests.     I spoke with Shahid about the recent event that stand to derail what is one of the more important down ballot races in some time.  He spoke candidly and I appreciate that.  Wherever you stand on the issues, women MUST be heard.    If you'd like to donate to the campaign do so here: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/4shahid   Nancy Pelosi Won't Debate Shahid article: https://www.sfchronicle.com/politics/article/Nancy-Pelosi-s-election-challenger-says-she-s-15405868.php   SF Chronicle Harassment article: https://www.sfchronicle.com/politics/article/Shahid-Buttar-Nancy-Pelosi-s-election-15424675.php   Intercept Article: https://theintercept.com/2020/07/23/shahid-buttar-campaign-allegations/   Shahid Buttar on Michael Brooks Show: https://youtu.be/AAaIWdaXZHc   (RIP Michael Brooks)   Thank you for taking the time to check this out.  If you'd like to support independent like this, PLEASE become a Patron.  You'll get all the bonus content, extra shows, and merch! We lost such an important voice on the Left this week. Michael Brooks died suddenly on Monday at the age of 36. Michael was the co-host of the Majority Report and the host of his own show, The Michael Brooks Show, better known as TMBS. In so many ways, Michael was just getting going. Rest in Power, brother.   Trump is calling for a surge of Federal forces into American cities, extending his “Portland Model” of brutal suppression of dissent and abduction of activists.    Philly is one of the cities that Trump is targeting for the surge. DA Larry Krasner says he will pursue criminal charges against Federal officers who violate the Constitutional rights of activists or break city, state, or federal laws around policing.    Meanwhile in Portland’s “Wall of Moms” has new allies. The Dads have gotten off the couch and join the Moms in the streets. They brought leaf blowers to the barricades to blow smoke from tear gas back in the direction of police.    It turns out that material reality does register on some level. Trump announces that he is canceling the Republican convention in Jacksonville next month. The move comes after it was pretty clear he would be facing half-empty rooms, lawsuits, and strict health regulations. Trump said the timing of the event was not right given the explosion of coronavirus cases in Florida. Instead, he’s going to be giving a speech to a gathering in Charlotte, NC. Because NC doesn’t have any cases of COVID-19. Oh. Wait. That’s not right.    This past Monday, 717 Restaurant Workers United held a “Takeout Takeover” at Cork and Fork in Harrisburg. The union organizing campaign is taking a community organizing approach to unionizing Cork and Fork workers and is looking to organize restaurant workers in the Harrisburg area. Monday’s action was supported by the DSA local. We’ll have organizers for 717 Restaurant Workers United and Harrisburg DSA on Monday’s Out d’Coup Live.    Edinboro University is the latest PASSHE university to go all remote for the fall.  At Kutztown University, organizers of the Healthy Campus Bill of Rights will be holding their second online town hall on August 5 as the beginning of the fall semester edges that much closer.    Parents and school systems are starting to get anxious as the back-to-school season kicks into high gear.   NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover is expected to launch next Thursday, July 30. This rover will be running on nuclear power. Let’s hope there’s no mishap in the launch. Don’t really need to have a nuclear-powered rover blow up over Florida right now. Or, really, ever.     I stepped out of my little Perkasie bubble this week and ordered some beer from Levante Brewing Company. Levante is based in West Chester, PA and I’ll give you a review of Tropical Whip, a Pineapple Sunday IPA; D.O.P.E (Doctrine of Phonetic Equivalents), an awesome Triple IPA; and, Tickle Parts, a fantastic NE IPA. Don’t worry, I won’t neglect Free Will! Gotta represent. I’ll give you the breakdown of their latest offerings.    And, Perkasie is getting a second brewery. Mystic Ways Brewing will be opening a brewery, taproom, and beer garden at 510.5 W. Walnut Street near the center of Perkasie.

Michael Brooks was a renowned journalist, intellectual, and political satirist. Best known for his work with the Majority Report and for hosting The Michael Brooks Show, Brooks was an outspoken activist for social justice and human rights across the world. Back in February, Brooks welcomed us into his home in Brooklyn where we recorded this interview as part of a documentary podcast on the https://www.opendemocracy.net/en/oureconomy/podcast-us-election-special-1-the-military-industrial-complex/ (US military industrial-complex). We had only asked him for half an hour, but he insisted we stay as long as we wanted to discuss what he viewed as a vital topic – the history and future of American foreign policy. Michael Brooks was a kind and generous person, and his voice will be missed by those he educated all across the world. Here is our hour with the late Michael Brooks.

Sam hosts Princeton historian Julian Zelizer to discuss his new book, Burning Down the House: Newt Gingrich, the Fall of a Speaker, and the Rise of the New Republican Party.  Zelizer and Sam begin their conversation with Newt's unconventional upbringing, including his marriage to his high school math teacher. Plus, his early entry into elected office and his pragmatic politics morphed into a career centered on partisan power. Zelizer explains how Gingrich set out to reshape and take back the House through anti-establishment rhetoric against the Democrats in the House for the first time in 42 years. Sam and Zelizer consider the effectiveness of running against "corruption" in Washington and the example of Speaker of the House Jim Wright. The two compare and contrast the GOP's unity and the Democratic party's disconnect and how it impacts each party's ability to legislate. And finally, Zelizer and Sam conclude their conversation investigating whether or not the parties have moved on from the Gingrich era of political power.  And in the Fun Half: Trump demands schools reopen, Stephen J Gould recommended reading, Brian Kilmeade doesn't understand how Fox has abetted the COVID crisis, Tucker Carlson says masks don't prevent the virus's spread in July 2020, Tucker Carlson's white supremacist head writer, runoffs in Texas, why Elizabeth Warren won't deliver the youth vote for Biden, Trump saved the US oil industry, plus your calls and IMs! Stephanie Kelton (@StephanieKelton) joins Sam to discuss her new book, "The Deficit Myth: Modern Monetary Theory and the Birth of the People's Economy." To those who favor a robust welfare state bolstered by generous federal spending, "how are you going to pay for it?" is an all-too-familiar rejoinder. But what if that question were irrelevant? In her latest work on modern monetary theory, or MMT, Kelton lays out the case for a new understanding of money and taxes that could free up the federal government to disregard the deficit in service of the public good. https://youtu.be/FrZo2h-S2dc Frank Smyth joins Sam to discuss his new book, "The NRA: The Unauthorized History." The NRA is one of the three most powerful lobbying groups in Washington, DC, consistently opposing restrictions on gun ownership and enjoying a mutually beneficial relationship with Trump and the GOP. But it has not always been this way. In this book, Smyth traces the history of the organization, from its surprising roots in post-Civil War New York City, to the "Cincinnati Revolt” of 1977 that changed its political direction, to the rabidly reactionary force it is today.
