The tenor Russell Watson's remarkable career took him from playing from working mens clubs in Salford to performing at the Vatican. But his life hasn't been completely charmed - he discusses the brain tumour that threatened his life as well as his voice and how he found his way back to centre stage.Jackie Kay is one of the UK's most lauded poets who turned to writing as a child as a sanctuary from the difficulties of life as an adopted, if much loved, half-Nigerian child in Scotland. A new BBC One documentary tells her story "In Her Own Words"; we'll be asking why she wanted to do that. Doctor-turned-comedian-turned-author Adam Kay's first book This Is Going To Hurt sold over 3 million copies and was adapted into a multi award-winning TV series. Now he's taken another career turn into children's fiction with a new character – Dexter Procter, the ten year old doctor. As an actress Deborah McAndrew played Angie Freeman on Coronation Street in the 1990s. She left the Rovers Return behind long ago for a career as a writer and her latest play tells the story of the night an Unidentified Flying Object landed near Stoke-on-Trent's Bentilee housing estate. The show draws on multiple eyewitness accounts from the time to create a warm and funny depiction of an extraordinary event happening to very ordinary people. Plus music from The Lemon Twigs's latest album A Dream Is All We Know. Presented by Nihal Arthanayake Produced by Olive Clancy
In episode #112, the TM team welcomed professional photographer Wesley Simpson. Wesley shares his incredible journey into the world of photography, offering insights and experiences he's gathered along the way. From working on the popular TV show Hollyoaks to serving as a personal assistant to opera singer Russell Watson, Wesley tells his experiences, leaving no stone unturned.
"I had this inner feeling that something would happen to take me away from my mundane life". The first twenty years of Russell Watson's life were very ordinary. He grew up in Salford, left school at 16 with almost no qualifications and joined the government's Youth Training Scheme. By the age of 20, he was working on the shop floor of a factory, making nuts and bolts. He started singing in local pubs and working men's clubs after winning a local talent competition organised by Manchester Piccadilly Radio. It was tough, and Russell considered giving up - until one night in Wigan changed everything. Russell has gone on to become one of the UK's most popular classical artists, selling over 7 million records and performing for notable figures including Pope John Paul II, members of the Royal Family and the Emperor of Japan. Tickets for his Magnificent Buildings concert tour are available at russellwatson.com
The world-renowned tenor Russell Watson never planned to be a recording artist, instead dreaming of football stardom as a young boy. “It was daydreams really. I was never any good,” he confesses. His rise to fame saw him move from imitating crooners in backstreet pubs to performing for the Pope, the late Queen Elizabeth II and two US presidents. Along the way, he's sold more than 7 million albums, won multiple BRIT awards and worked with musical legends including Paul McCartney and Luciano Pavarotti. Yet at the height of his fame, he came close to death. Brain tumours caused the then 40-year-old to suffer a brain hemorrhage while lying in bed one night, resulting in emergency surgery. These events rocked his world – and cemented his faith. He tells Premier Christianity's Emma Fowle the full story.
Paul Hawksbee and Andy Jacobs are joined in the pod by comedian Rob Auton and Man United supporting singer Russell Watson. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

00h 00’00” Skördefest 00h 01’36” Presentación 00h 04’19” Cabecera 00h 05’22” Inicio 00h 06’03” Overtura 00h 10’13” Paths of leaves and needles 00h 12’01” Where you go I go with you 00h 18’03” Stone King 00h 21’08” Down to the sea 00h 25’32” Bad harvest 00h 32’53” No 00h 38’11” He’s our pilot 00h 40’16” Never 00h 46’14” Golden wheatfields 00h 48’32” All who are grieving 00h 52’31” We open up the gateways 00h 56’47” Peasants at sea 01h 01’14” Lice 01h 06’32” In the dead of darkness 01h 10’35” A Sunday in Battery Park 01h 15’30” Home 01h 19’34” American man 01h 24’31” Dreams of gold 01h 28’20” Summer rose 01h 32’59” Emperors and Kings 01h 37’16” Twilight images calling 01h 43’54” Queen of the praire 01h 50’02” Wild grass 01h 56’30” Gold can turn to sand 02h 03’43” Wildcat money 02h 07’59” A miracle of God 02h 12’30” Down to the waterside 02h 14’50” Miscarriage 02h 16’41” You have to been there 02h 23’13” Here I am again 02h 30’17” With child again 02h 33’00” Rising from myth and legend 02h 36’02” I’ll be waiting there 02h 42’41” Curiosidades y anécdotas 02h 44’20” Aldrid
No one would have believed that in the last years of the 1970s, a concept album based on the H.G. Wells novel would have such a profound and lasting impact on those who heard it. Few men even considered the possibility that it would it re-emerge in the 21st century as a live theatrical experience, featuring Russell Watson and Marti fucking Pellow. And yet, across the gulf of 4 decades, minds immeasurably superior to ours regarded this record as a peerless masterpiece, whilst Gary Barlow slowly and surely drew his plans against us.
The new album Christmas with Aled and Russell is out now.

Special guest, Henry Myrick, comes on to discuss his favorite player and what Bill meant to him.

When Plácido Domingo, José Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti teamed up for their first joint performance on 7th July, 1990 in Rome, it was intended as a one-off collaboration to celebrate the FIFA World Cup. But the concert triggered instant worldwide fame for the trio, who became known as The Three Tenors, and their live recording became the biggest-selling classical album of all time. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly consider how, by mixing showtunes with opera, the Tenors created the ‘classical crossover' genre that spawned Russell Watson, Il Divo and Katherine Jenkins; explain how Carreras' recovery from leukemia was the reason for the concert coming together; and reveal how their iconic Nessun Dorma encore was nearly not included at all… Further Reading: • ‘TENORS, ANYONE? What images come to mind when you hear the terms trailer park or mobile home park? You may think of run-down communities with stray dogs and men walking sporting wife-beater tops. That stereotype is what led to the birth of the name “manufactured” homes and their communities. Many manufactured home communities in Florida have beautiful dwellings with fabulous amenities such as pools, gyms and pickle ball courts. We begin this week's programme with edited highlights from the ceremonial funeral for His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, held yesterday in St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, under strict Covid restrictions. Every detail of the service was planned in advance by the Duke himself, to reflect personal elements of his life and his close military ties. There was no eulogy singing his praises, no sermon, and no family readings. Instead, the Duke chose Bible passages, prayers and sacred music which reflected his deep Christian faith. In death, there is no rank or seniority - we are all equal in the sight of God, and yesterday's service placed Her Majesty the Queen and her family alongside every other bereaved person. As we listen to the extracts from yesterday's service, my prayer is that anyone feeling lost and alone at this time might, in these moments, also feel the consoling love that is God's gift, as He stands alongside all who are in pain or distress. Later in the programme, we hear a very different story of re-discovering the joy in life, with some very unexpected help, and the innocence of a 5-year-old brings joy and simplicity to the familiar words of the Lord's Prayer - and there's music from Aled Jones and Russell Watson, too! With the reopening of our churches this week, events and special services will be resuming too, so do please let me have details for our Notice Board, and for inclusion in my Sundown community news too. My email address is judithley@manxradio.com and you can use the same address to send me details of your favourite hymn, for inclusion in a future edition of AT YOUR SERVICE - I'd love to hear from you!

And that work continues, as he's still one of the most in demand drummers around. Attitude, facility and reliability keep Gordo as that first call guy, be it sessions or live gigs for jazz, big band, pop, rock, fusion and even metal. Today we have the pleasure of speaking with Robert Emery, a concert-pianist turned conductor and Musical Director. He’s worked at venues from London's Royal Albert Hall to the Sydney Opera House and with some of the top names in the world of music such as the UK’s best-selling classical artist Russell Watson and Stewart Copeland, drummer from The Police. He’s also the host of Backstage with Robert Emery, a new podcast featuring behind-the-scenes interviews with star musicians and top-level performers. If you’re a member of Musical U or familiar with this show then you’ll know we have a pretty firm stance on the idea of musical “talent” and its implications for the adult music learner. We’re always excited when we have the chance to interview someone who’s considered “talented” or “gifted” and see what we can learn from their backstory and their own attitude to music learning. On paper, Robert’s a classic case of the child prodigy, a talented musician who saw great success at an incredible pace as both a pianist and then a conductor. And I wouldn’t for a second detract from that or question his amazing abiltiies. But as you’ll be hearing, there is some interesting subtlety to the story. And as Robert would be the first to tell you, all of his accomplishments and the praise he receives - it has been earned through hard work, not just an effortless “gift”. He’s also a very experienced music teacher and so has some very helpful insights and advice for the adult music learner in particular. We talk about: • How to choose the right instrument - and how to know whether you have or not. • The particular challenges of learning music as an adult and how to overcome them - the pep talk he used to give his new adult students on day one that proved to be worth its weight in gold for them. • Robert’s views on talent, nature versus nurture, and what that means for the average adult music learner. It comes across clearly in his own podcast that Robert is a lovely guy with wisdom aplenty to share and so I knew this conversation would be a fascinating one. Enjoy. Subscribe For Future Episodes! 00h 00'00" Presentación 00h 01'22" Cabecera 00h 01'57" Presentación años setenta 00h 02'17" Le premier pas (Claude Michel Schonberg) 00h 07'00" Redevenir petit (Claude Michel Schonberg) 00h 10'11" Without you (Russell Watson) 00h 14'08" My love & I (Russell Watson) 00h 18'07" Presentación años ochenta 00h 18'33" Ce soir l'amour est dans tes yeux (Martine St. Clair) 00h 24'54" Il y a de l'amour dans l'air (Martine St. Clair) 00h 29'39" Duel d'amour (Martine St. Clair) 00h 33'28" Presentación bandas sonoras 00h 33'53" Le caviar rouge 00h 36'59" Alex et Nora 00h 38'52" Tzigane 00h 41'56" Presentación Wuthering Heights 00h 42'20" The wind 00h 46'18" The arrival 00h 51'00" Growing up 00h 57'14" The dinner party 01h 05'25" Edgard & Cathy 01h 10'45" The return 01h 18'57" Wedding dance 01h 23'24" Heathcliffe, Cathy & Isabella 01h 30'53" The death - Epilogue 01h 40'37" Presentación Cleopatra 01h 40'49" Wadjet 01h 45'32" Wedding of Cleopatra & Ptolomy 01h 51'16" Cleopatra & Caesar 01h 57'16" Journey on the Nile pt 2 01h 59'36" Birth of Caesarion 02h 02'35" Caesar and Cleopatra's arrives at Rome 02h 06'40" Cleopatra & Mark Anthony 02h 12'36" Life of pleasure 02h 18'16" The loves of Cleopatra 02h 23'00" Cleopatra's death Espero te haya gustado
