But, because of an injury, he didn't make the team - and he couldn't afford a plane ticket home. So he came up with an idea while working a cargo job at Heathrow Airport: “I saw them shipping animals. And I thought, well, if the dogs can survive it, I could.” Marcus and Julie McSorley's book about Reg Spiers is Out of the Box: The Highs and Lows of a Champion Smuggler. Welcome to Diabetes Confessions — a brand new series where we get honest about the decisions we've made in diabetes that we're not proud of.For years, I've coached people through the daily complexities of Type 1 diabetes. I've talked about trust, dosing strategy, pre-bolusing, exercise, nutrition strategies, and building habits that stick. What I haven't talked about - until now - is how many of those same things I've got completely wrong myself.Episode one starts with something that hits close to home for almost every person who has ever taken insulin. Not taking enough of it. Not because I forgot. Not because I miscalculated. But because I was afraid. Afraid of going low. Afraid of the crash. Afraid of what happens when the insulin works too well. For a long stretch of my diabetes life, I chronically under-dosed my meals and spent the next two to three hours chasing high blood sugars and riding a rollercoaster that never had to be that bad. I walk through exactly what was happening, why fear and lack of confidence kept me stuck, and the mindset shift that finally changed my life. This one isn't clinical. It isn't a framework. It's just me being real and it might be exactly what you need to hear.

What does it actually take to generate 250 million views a month? This week on First Rounds On Me, Joe and Hannah sit down with Matthew Shaw, founder and CEO of Bebida, the media company behind some of the internet's most recognizable sports, pop culture, and entertainment content.Matthew breaks down how he went from working a 9-to-5 he hated to building a massive digital media company, why committing to consistent content changed everything, and what he's learned about creating videos people actually want to watch and share. But going viral is only part of the story.Matthew opens up about the pressure of constantly growing a media company, the mental exhaustion that comes with entrepreneurship, building the right team, finding people with an entrepreneurial mindset, and the strange reality of having friends who are also your direct competitors. They also get into the psychology behind viral content, building real brand loyalty, why creators need personality—not just views—and Matthew's journey from sleeping on couches to interviewing NBA legend Dirk Nowitzki at the Basketball World Cup.Plus, Matthew tells the story of asking UFC fighter Paddy Pimblett to kick him for a video—a decision he was still feeling a month later. And, of course, Hannah puts Matthew and Joe's sports knowledge to the test with a round of increasingly difficult trivia. This episode is about much more than going viral. This week, we’ll hear from Butch Hartman, the animator and creator behind Nickelodeon’s biggest shows, including The Fairly OddParents and Danny Phantom. Butch grew up in a chaotic household in Michigan, where television and comic books served as his primary escape. This early passion eventually led him to California’s top animation school and then to a long career at Nickelodeon. Today, we’ll hear why he walked away after nearly twenty years at the network to start his own studio. Later in the episode, we’ll hear from Matt Cooper, a country artist from Jacksonville, Florida who turned the worst year of his life into a number one radio single. After losing his mother to cancer, Matt found himself white-knuckling his grief, until a late night group therapy session cracked something open and sent him home to write a song in a single hour that would change everything. So it’s my job as a producer and a showrunner and a studio head to make sure that whatever goes on that screen is uplifting and is good for people’s souls and their spirit.” - Butch Hartman “There are kids out there I will never meet, but I know that the content I’m producing is going to somehow affect their life in a positive way for the Lord.” - Butch Hartman “We have to be very wise about the decisions we make, especially when it comes to entertainment, because it lives forever.” - Butch Hartman “I think it’s really hard, especially as a man, to deal with grief, because you try to white knuckle everything as a dude.” - Matt Cooper “I’m a big believer in therapy. It was really, really great for me. It was a way for me to talk through the emotions that I had just been hiding a lot.” - Matt Cooper “I wrote my song 'Highs and Lows' in one hour. You may have chosen to go into private practice because you wanted more freedom, only to find yourself recreating the same traditional workweek you were trying to leave behind. When success has always looked like putting in your time, staying busy, and being available throughout the workday, stepping away from your desk can feel like playing hooky, which can be uncomfortable — even when your business is stable and your clients are well supported. In this “Best Of” episode, Linzy revisits one of the most downloaded conversations from the past year with Diane Webber, a financial therapist, private practice owner, and coach in the Money Skills programs. Together, they explore the freedom, responsibility, uncertainty, and purpose that can come with self-employment.Diane shares how private practice has allowed her to be present for her family while navigating the changing needs of the sandwich generation. She and Linzy also talk about why therapists do not have 40 hours of quality emotional energy to give every week, how rest and time away support better clinical work, and why appearing busy is not the same as doing meaningful work.Their conversation also turns to the ongoing work of managing money as business owners. Financial systems cannot always be reorganized quickly because money is still coming in and going out while the changes are happening. Diane explains why patience, small wins, and confidence in the decision-making process matter more than trying to fix everything at once.If you have been measuring your success by the number of hours you work, feeling guilty when you step away, or trying to overhaul your finances in one intense burst, this episode will help you think differently about what a sustainable private practice can look like.Timestamps:03:30 - Meet Money Skills Coach Diane Webber04:16 - The Highs and Lows of Self-Employment05:17 - What Freedom in Private Practice Can Look Like06:05 - Self-Employment and the Needs of the Sandwich Generation07:41 - Building a Business That Supports Time Away08:01 - Unlearning the Need to Put In Your Time09:39 - Why Quality Matters More Than Quantity10:26 - Therapists Do Not Have 40 Hours of Emotional Energy11:16 - Giving Yourself Permission to Step Away12:54 - Letting Your Brain Work in the Background13:56 - The Performance of Busyness and Pseudo-Productivity14:41 - Understanding and Honoring How You Work Best17:34 - Variety, Change, and Using Different Parts of Your Brain18:17 - Why Money Skills Work Can Feel More Concrete20:00 - Creating Order in Work That Often Feels Messy22:00 - Building Confidence in Your Financial Process22:33 - Learning Money Skills While Money Is Still Moving23:30 - Creating a Sustainable, Ongoing Relationship with Money24:43 - Do All Private Practice Owners Identify as Entrepreneurs?29:33 - Finding a Gap and Building Work Around It30:33 - How Owning Your Niche Helps the Right Clients Find You32:22 - Outsourcing Work You Do Not Enjoy33:00 - Freedom, Responsibility, and the Thrill of Self-Employment34:06 - Diane's Financial Therapy Practice35:29 - Linzy's Final Reflection and Community InvitationConnect with Diane Webber:Diane is a licensed professional counselor and certified financial social work counselor with a fully online private practice in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Some had even left private practice, or were avoiding starting one, because managing finances was just too stressful. So Linzy set out to support helpers and healers with developing peace of mind about their money. Since so many were never taught money skills, she focuses on the “how” of making the business side of private practice doable, and even super satisfying. You can learn more here: https://moneyskillsfortherapists.com/aboutAnd you can follow along on social media:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/linzybonham/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/moneyskillsfortherapists/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/moneynutsandboltsWant to feel more calm and confident about your money? The heat continues and the poor sleep does too -- it's just too hot at night. We thought we broke a record yesterday for the highest low temperature ever recorded. Turns out by the end of the day, we only matched it -- 82 degrees. The heat is causing issues for AC units around the area, and fires aren't helping things either. Britt Johnson, KSL NewsRadio reporter and Weber County resident joins Greg and Jim to describe a frightening situation in her own neighborhood yesterday, when homes were evacuated due to a fast-moving brush fire.
Calls for Congress to forego August recess and pass SAVE America Act instead Congress is about to head out from Washington, D.C. for about a month, but Utah's own Senator Mike Lee says members of Congress should forego the trip back home to meet with constituents and pass the SAVE America Act instead. The problem is that the bill still doesn't have the votes, even among Republicans. So why's Senator Lee pushing for this move? Deseret News Congressional Correspondent Cami Mondeaux explains the Senator's recent moves. - WSJ: Major companies hiring retired CEOs to run their business A new article in the Wall Street Journal says more and more companies are bringing older CEOs out of retirement to run major corporations again. These aren't younger guys who retired early; they're generally men older than 70. Cracker Barrel, Boeing, and Verizon are just a few of the latest companies to go this route. Is that wise? Could it jade younger people who are already struggling to get a foot in the door? Millennial and Inside Sources Executive Producer Andy Cupp shares his thoughts. - Ask the Attorney: Brian Kohberger wants to withdraw guilty plea At what point is it too late to take back a guilty plea? The man accused of killing four students from the University of Idaho in 2022 is now trying to take back his guilty plea and go to trial. Brian Kohberger is petitioning a judge to withdraw his earlier guilty plea, saying he wants this to go to trial now instead. What would have changed Kohberger's mind, and it is a smart move? KSL Legal Analyst Greg Skordas breaks it down. - Pres. Trump asks SCOTUS to take up executive order on mail-in voting The fight from the Trump Administration against mail-in voting continues today. Over the weekend, an appeals court sided against the President, saying he's not allow to impose restrictions on mail-in voting. Now, President Trump is taking that fight to the United States Supreme Court. Greg and Jim are both skeptical of a win for the administration; they explain why. - The ongoing effects of gambling on America's young people It can sometimes feel a little weird to talk about gambling in a state like Utah, where we're not allowed to gamble. But that doesn't mean people don't find ways around it. And more and more, we're seeing the negative effects of gambling -- how it can really impact a person and our communities. Jay Evensen, Opinion Editor at the Deseret News has a new piece examining how gambling can affect young people; he joins the show to share his thoughts. - 98 days to go until the midterm election Gambling might not be allowed in Utah, but that doesn't mean we can't make some predictions on the upcoming midterm elections. With less than 100 days to go until folks cast their ballots around the country, Greg and Jim discuss the chances Democrats have to regain the House and/or the Senate. - More homebuyers looking at wildfire risk when purchasing a new house When buying a home, people tend to look at the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, the size of the yard, and the amenities like a hot tub, den, or a double oven. And now, more and more people are also looking at wildfires when shopping for a new place to live. Is this just our new reality with warmer temperatures and a hotter climate? - Social: Fly 24 hours straight or take a few layovers? If you had to travel to the other side of the world -- say from Europe to Australia -- would you rather take a single nonstop flight or split it up with a layover or two? Overnight, plane maker Airbus and Qantas Airways broke a world record in an initiative called "Project Sunrise." In a journey lasting 24 hours and 24 minutes, a brand new plane flew from southern France to southeast Australia. Inside Sources Executive Producer and self-proclaimed plane nerd Andy Cupp has the story; Greg and Jim give their thoughts on the option. - Utah ranked as number one state in the nation… for the 4th year in a row Utah's been ranked the number one state in the nation for the 4th year in a row. But it's not all sunshine and roses and unicorns -- we come in near the very bottom of the list in one category: natural environment. Greg Skordas and Jim Bennett go through some of the rankings and why U.S. News and World Report says the Beehive State is the best in the country.
On today's episode, Jason and Derek settle a common debate - as a lifelong car enthusiast, is working in the automotive industry a dream job? Short answer: It's wonderful - but if it were as amazing as it seems 100% of the time, none of us would be paid to work in it. Jason gives us the rundown of his time in the industry - and we quickly realize, there's a lot of prep that happens behind the scenes of Revelations, Cammisa's Ultimate Drag Race & Ultimate Lap Battle, and other Hagerty Media pieces. This includes a sneak peak in the latest upcoming Lamborghini piece, featuring the Urraco, Jalpa, Countach, Gallardo, Revuelto, Temerario, and Jason's Ferrari 308 GT4 - many of which explored several states of function and non-function... Derek gives us a view into his world - one which he often has to travel around the globe to stand out as a collector car dealer in the modern era. Driving and experiencing dream cars around the world can be quite fun, but perhaps having to manage a personality or two, plus getting sick on an airplane. South America cruising delivered some of the most spectacular sights I have ever experienced — but also a few costly, frustrating, and very unexpected lows. On my recent 31-night South America cruise, I filmed live updates from eight of the region's most popular cruise ports and scenic cruising days, capturing what it was really like in the moment. From leaving the ship for two and a half days to visit Machu Picchu, to standing among penguins in the remote Falkland Islands, sailing past Cape Horn, Glacier Alley and the astonishing Brüggen / Pío XI Glacier, this trip had moments that were genuinely epic. But it was not all breathtaking views and once-in-a-lifetime experiences. In this video, I also reveal the South America ports and excursions that disappointed me, surprised me for the wrong reasons, or left me questioning whether the cost and effort were really worth it, and a few ports that sounded more exciting on paper than they felt in reality. I visit and discuss Lima, Machu Picchu, Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands, Ushuaia, Cape Horn and other Scenic Sailing Highlights, the Chilean Fjords, Punta Arenas, Magdalena Island, General San Martín, Puerto Montt, Coquimbo and La Serena — sharing the highs, the lows, the watch-outs, and what I would do differently next time. South America is one of the most varied and dramatic cruise regions in the world, but it is also unpredictable, expensive in places, and not always easy to get right. Melissa Slemp has lived with type 1 diabetes for 44 years — since she was diagnosed in 1982, before glucometers, before CGMs, back when insulin came from vials and syringes and "boiling your needles" was still a recent memory for a lot of people. In this episode, we trace that whole arc: what early management actually looked like, the high-risk pregnancy she navigated in the 90s, and the moment — after more than four decades on injections — she finally switched to a pump. If you've ever wondered what it's like to hand over that much control after that much time, this is the conversation. But the real heart of this episode is what happens to blood sugar when a woman with type 1 diabetes hits perimenopause. Melissa walks through her own experience of watching her basal insulin needs climb for no obvious reason, the years she spent without an explanation, and what she eventually learned about estrogen, progesterone, and insulin resistance — knowledge she says she had to dig up herself, because most endocrinologists and OBGYNs simply aren't trained in the overlap. That research became the reason she wrote Highs, Lows, and Hormones, a survival guide for women navigating diabetes from their monthly cycle through menopause. Along the way, we get into hormone replacement therapy, why so many women blame themselves before they ever think to blame their hormones, and the bigger pattern underneath it all: how much of diabetes research and care has historically centered men, and what it costs women when it does. There's also a genuinely great story about how Melissa met her husband, who also lives with type 1 — on the side of the road, of all places. This one's for anyone managing type 1 diabetes as a woman, anyone who loves someone who is, or anyone who's ever felt like their body changed the rules without telling them why.
