In this episode of Tank Talks, host Matt Cohen and recurring guest John Ruffolo kick off the new year with a true “only in 2026” combo: a front-row seat to a SpaceX Falcon 9 launch carrying Kepler Communications' satellites, followed by a hard reality check on Canada's venture capital slowdown. John breaks down what it felt like watching the rocket, the first-stage landing, and why Kepler's mission is bigger than a cool space flex: it's the early shape of space-based data centers and laser-linked networks. From there, Matt and John unpack an RBCx report arguing 2025 was Canada's worst VC fundraising year since 2016, and why “capital is fungible” is a comforting myth at the seed stage. They dig into how de-globalization and national self-interest are reshaping capital flows, why Canada is getting squeezed by the barbell effect in venture, and what policy levers (like a QSBS-style incentive) could actually restart domestic risk capital. The episode closes with two tension points that rhyme: Nvidia's $20B Groq (with a Q) deal showing how returns can flow outside Canada, and the escalating political drama of Trump's DOJ targeting Fed Chair Jerome Powell and what that uncertainty does to markets. If Canada can help put “data centers in the sky,” can it also build the domestic capital base to keep its best companies anchored at home?“A Data Center in the Sky” + Laser-Linked Networks (00:03:07)Kepler's satellites are positioned as more than comms hardware: think orbital compute + storage + real-time processing, with laser links connecting satellites like a network in space. The RBCx VC Report: 2025 Fundraising Hits a Low (00:05:51)Matt summarizes the report's headline numbers and why the pain concentrates on emerging managers and the long tail, not the handful of breakout founders who can raise anywhere.“Venture Investing Is Local” in a De-Globalizing World (00:08:39)John challenges the idea that foreign capital will fill gaps at the earliest stages. In this cycle, countries increasingly keep capital for their own ecosystems, making Canada's domestic shortage more dangerous. The Barbell Effect: Giants and Niche Funds Win, the Middle Gets Crushed (00:10:17)They outline how venture is polarizing into mega-platform funds and specialized micro-funds, while mid-sized generalists get squeezed, and why that dynamic is amplified in Canada.Nvidia's $20B Groq Deal and Canada's Return Profile (00:12:36)They break down the Groq (Q) story, Canadian ties among investors and operators, and the bigger question: if LPs can make outsized returns elsewhere, what keeps capital committed to Canada?Trump vs Powell: DOJ Pressure, Fed Independence, and Market Fallout (00:17:38)They react to the reported DOJ move against Jerome Powell, how even Republicans are uneasy about weaponization, and why political pressure campaigns tend to increase uncertainty, not lower it.Why Uncertainty Pushes Rates Up, Not Down (00:19:30)John's punchline: the intended outcome (lower costs, lower rates) can backfire as markets price in instability, and the Powell timeline may extend into a longer institutional fight.Connect with John Ruffolo on LinkedIn: https://ca.linkedin.com/in/joruffoloConnect with Matt Cohen on LinkedIn: https://ca.linkedin.com/in/matt-cohen1Visit the Ripple Ventures website: https://www.rippleventures.com/ This is a public episode. Does God actually care about your business and the work you're doing? In this client success story, Audrey sits down with Hannah to share what shifted when she realized that God doesn't just care about her. He cares about her business too. When Hannah first came into coaching, she was overwhelmed and unsure whether her ideas could become something sustainable. She was working hard, juggling too many ideas at once, and quietly questioning if her niche even mattered. Without clear direction, the emotional weight of building started to add up.I know many founders feel this way. We hope this episode becomes a reminder that building a business doesn't mean carrying everything alone. God cares about the details: the decisions, the doubts, the timing, and when we invite Him into our work honestly, it changes how we build.Cheering you on,Kelsey Kemp & Audrey BagarusCONNECT WITH HANNAH:

Some years expand you. Others strip you down and rebuild you. In this episode, I'm reflecting on a year that held both — the highest highs and some of the most challenging seasons I've navigated as a founder and a mom. From welcoming our second son, Max, and witnessing the growing bond between my boys, to returning to Australia for the first time in years and reconnecting with a part of myself I deeply missed. I also share honestly about the harder parts: a long stretch of lower income, inconsistent childcare, stepping back into project management after a team shift, and what it was like to carry more of the business during an already full season of life. But more than a recap, this episode is about what those moments required of me — the calm, focus, and discernment that only come from experience. I talk about the lessons that emerged from being back inside the business, the ideas that were born under pressure, and why this past year felt less like a breakdown and more like a shedding. Finally, I share the vision that's now guiding our next chapter — not as a distant dream, but as a grounded, shared commitment. A season of simplicity, focus, and stability. A life and business built with intention, not urgency. If you've ever found yourself in a season that felt heavy, uncertain, or slower than expected, this episode is a reminder that clarity often comes on the other side of shedding.

This week on The Baseline NBA Podcast, we break down the highs and lows shaping the NBA right now — from major injuries impacting contenders to historic performances that continue to redefine greatness.First , as injuries take center stage around the league. Jalen Suggs suffers a Grade 1 MCL contusion and is out indefinitely, while Jonas Valančiūnas is sidelined with a right calf strain and will be re-evaluated in four weeks. Combined with Nikola Jokić's knee injury, the Nuggets' frontcourt takes a major hit, raising real questions about depth, durability, and timing as the season unfolds. Highs:- The 2025 NBA Christmas Day games delivered 15-year viewership highs, with over 47 million U.S. viewers, reinforcing the NBA's cultural relevance and dominance in marquee moments. - Russell Westbrook moves into 7th all-time in assists, passing Magic Johnson — a milestone that adds another chapter to his Hall of Fame résumé. We also celebrate basketball greatness at the highest level. - Giannis Antetokounmpo continues his historic run, recording his 158th career 30/10/5 game, passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for second all-time and closing in on Oscar Robertson.- LeBron James adds yet another legendary moment, posting 31 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists, becoming the oldest player ever to score 30+ and surpassing Kareem's mark for the most points by a 41-year-old. LeBron and Kareem now stand alone as the only players to score 25+ at age 41 — doing it at the exact same age, 41 years and 3 days.Lows:- We discuss Draymond Green's ejection following a controversial non–three-second call and what it says about composure, officiating, and reputation- Plus, Jaylen Brown's frustration after missing out on Eastern Conference Player of the Month sparks a deeper conversation on player recognition, narrative vs. metrics, and how awards are truly evaluated. Then we shift to the highs, where the league continues to shine on the biggest stages.- From injuries and controversy to records, ratings, and royalty, this episode captures the full spectrum of the NBA — where the highs are historic and the lows are unavoidable.

It's the final Energy Gang of the year, and host Ed Crooks is joined by regulars Amy Myers Jaffe, Director of NYU's Energy, Climate Justice and Sustainability Lab, Shanu Mathew, a portfolio investor and manager, and Melissa Lott, a systems engineer and energy analyst, to take stock of an exciting year for energy. The buzzword of 2025 was undoubtedly AI. Data centres transformed the outlook for power demand, and rising electricity prices put pressure on a new US administration that is determined to focus on affordability. As the shockwaves from advances in AI spread out across the industry, everyone started talking about “bring your own power” and flexible loads on the grid. Meanwhile battery deployment soared, as businesses looked for solutions to the challenges raised by variable renewable generation and rising demand. The crew discuss permitting reform in the US, congestion pricing for cars in New York – one of the more positive stories of the year – and exciting times for nuclear power. The reality of new nuclear technologies was the subject of intense debate in 2025. Does the future of nuclear power really lie in small modular reactors, or do more established proven designs actually have a better chance to accelerate deployment? Join us for the hot topics that shaped energy in 2025, and will keep on making headlines in 2026.The article on air pollution reduction referenced by Ed and Melissa you can find here: https://news.cornell.edu/stories/2025/12/congestion-pricing-improved-air-quality-nyc-and-suburbsBooks mentioned on the show include: Breakneck: China's quest to engineer the future by Dan WangHouse of Huawei: The secret history of China's most powerful companyby Eva DouConsumed: How big brands got us hooked on plastic by Saabira ChaudhuriWe hope you have a great holiday season and a very happy New Year. Marten Lodewijks focuses on declining alcohol consumption. “We're not at a historic low yet,” he says, and is comparable to 90's levels – and much higher than the 70's, he says. There have been dips before, but “what's somewhat unique is the rapidity” of the fall. He looks at societal reasons for lower drinking, including generational dynamics, as Gen Z tends not to drink as much.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – / schwabnetwork Follow us on Facebook – / schwabnetwork Follow us on LinkedIn - / schwab-network About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about
