Star Trek. The final frontier. These are the podcasts of three enthusiastic nerds. In “Arena,” Star Trek: The Original Series delivers one of its most iconic moments: Captain Kirk squaring off against the Gorn. The fight is equal parts legendary and unintentionally hilarious.
This week we're diving into Starfleet's creepiest corners! Where tribbles multiply faster than your ex's bad decisions, and the Gorn make every away mission feel like Predator with phasers. From salt vampires to evil exxon oil spills, we're counting down the monsters that made us scream, laugh, and question the Federation's HR policies. So grab your tricorder, dim the lights, and prepare for a transporter malfunction straight into the Monster Mash of the Final Frontier. It's spooky, it's slimy, it's Star Trek at its weirdest...and we love it.
Hit it! Star Trek: The Original Series, Series 1, Episode 18. First broadcast on Thursday 19 January 1967. Stardate: 3045.6. Gornfest 2025 continues this week on Untitled Star Trek Project, as we head back to 1967 — when the Gorn were just a single rubber lizard in a spangly minidress and the Federation was barely a glint in Gene L. Coon's eye. Iconic, memorable and visually striking — this is why nerds still podcast about the show 58½ years later.

In this review of Strange New Worlds Season 3, Episode 9, "Terrarium," we explore a classic Star Trek-inspired narrative that deeply challenges our understanding of survival as Ortegas faces being stranded with a Gorn. We delve into Ortegas's surprising bond with the Gorn, Uhura's critical yet controversial decisions, the Metrons' appearance and their assessment of humanity, and numerous Trekkie easter eggs including references to Captain Matt Decker. As a spiritual remake and prequel to "Arena," "Terrarium" delivers the heart and understanding synonymous with Star Trek while maintaining its unique identity. #Terrarium #TheEnemy #Darmok #Arena #Dawn

They cover some of this week’s Star Trek Day announcements (Star Trek Lego! A preschool show!), and preview the Khan audio series. Tony talks about the Strange New Worlds screening & panel at the LA Screenings event in LA on Star Trek Day, and Laurie recaps the Trek to New Jersey convention. Then it’s time to review Strange New Worlds season 3 finale, “New Life and New Civilizations.” They talk about Pike and Batel, Spirk, the Vezda, magic vs. sci-fi, and more, and play the full audio from Tony’s interview with showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers, whereupon Laurie goes on a Gorn rant and Tony suggests she focus on celebrating that the end of their storyline has come.

Anika and Liz get sucked into a wormhole and trapped on a moon orbiting a gas giant, which is actually pretty standard when you're adults with jobs trying to organise a board game night. We're discussing Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, season 3, episode 9, "Terrarium", an episode which comes so close to being good before it snatches defeat from the jaws of victory. "We're going to give you the stories you've been asking for since season 1, and then we're gonna end it with a twist that makes it all totally meaningless! Hurray!" Good news, Akiva Goldsman finally watched "Arena"! Next question, did he, um, understand it? Anika has notes on Metron experiment design The AUDACITY of SNW criticising the Gorn for ableism This was an opportunity to let Uhura become a more complex and flawed character, but unfortunately Pike is bad at his job (and so are the writers) Is La'an actually psychologically fit for starship duty? Why are we making fun of Spock's weight? Why is this whole season so dedicated to bullying Spock? Endangering 4,000 people including children: that's the Christopher Pike way But seriously, why does Uhura have sole responsibility for this problem? Why is Pike setting her up to fail?
Can empathy with a Gorn change Trek's future? Dom Bettinelli, Jimmy Akin, and Fr. Jason Tyler unpack “Terrarium”—Metrons, La'an's shot, and Ortegas' trauma—plus fiery feedback on Trek comedy.

Ortegas quickly discovers that a female Gorn pilot is also stranded, but the Gorn saves and protects Ortegas from the moon's dangers. Initially wary due to her traumatic experiences with the Gorn, Ortegas befriends the pilot and discovers that they are not so dissimilar—the two work together to find a way off the moon. Ortegas and the Gorn ignite the moon's atmosphere, signaling the Enterprise, but La'An kills the Gorn, mistaking her for an enemy. This week on Trek Tuesday, we dive into one of the most provocative episodes of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3—“What Is Starfleet?”—with special guest Mynor Luken, who plays Beto Ortegas, the civilian documentarian aboard the Enterprise.
After almost two full years, Strange New Worlds is finally back and we're jumping straight into the action with the highly anticipated Season 3 premiere, “Hegemony, Part 2.” This week, we're breaking it all down in real time, just hours after the episode drops. Pike and the Enterprise crew are back and there's no easing back into this one. We'll be digging into all the fallout from last season's cliffhanger, exploring how the show handled the return to the Gorn conflict and whether the emotional stakes lived up to the build-up. Did Pike make the right call? Was the rescue worth the cost? And what does this episode signal for the rest of the season? We've definitely got thoughts. Of course, it wouldn't be Trek Geeks without some hot takes, speculation, and your live comments fueling the chaos. This is a *spoiler-filled* discussion, so if you haven't seen the episode yet, maybe warp out and come back after. But if you have watched, grab a drink, fire up the viewscreen, and join us as we kick off another season of SNW with the passion only Trek Geeks can deliver.
Okay, lets you and him fight! In shameless pursuit of ‘brand synergy,' this episode of Casual Trek celebrates the return of Strange New Worlds to our streaming services by doing an episode about those lizardy bastards Kirk fought once at those rocks from Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey, the Gorn! In ‘Arena,' Kirk fights a string vest wearing space lizard while Spock watches and provides inane commentary (hey Spock-o, that's OUR job) and then in the Strange New Worlds Season 2 finale and Season 3 opener ‘Hegemony Parts 1 and 2' Pike spends more time hiding and less time building rudimentary cannons, Spock and Chapel play a little Alien Isolation and Ortegas loses herself in the job… Bogus. Episodes discussed: Arena (07:20) and Hegemony Parts 1 and 2 (38:27)Talking Points include: American Family Reunions, Donkey Kong Bananza, young Tom Jones is weird looking and The Monkees are great, Oh no not another Godlike being, Vasquez Rocks, everyone got tinnitus making this episode, Charlie's time as a scout, Miles has a legitimate reason to bring up ‘Blake's 7,' they tried to build the cannon on Mythbusters… it did not go well, we're not Trying That in a Small Town but we finally listen to The Mountain Goats for the show! Pike's brief moment of religious crisis is weird, Strange New Worlds' making the Gorn so monstrous clashes with how it went down in ‘Arena', Alien Isolation, the nature of ‘Good' and ‘Evil' members of various Star Trek races and how the idea the Gorn might be biologically evil might not be a great look for Trek.
“Through the Lens of Time” Nurse Chapel's new beau, Doctor Roger Korby, pays a visit to the Enterprise to get help with a dig on Vadia IX, a planet that's home to the descendants of an ancient, highly advanced civilization believed to have been capable of traveling across multiple galaxies and to have discovered immortality. The mission quickly takes a dangerous turn when the landing party becomes trapped inside a temple—or is it a prison? The structure and technology are clearly ancient and advanced, but uncovering their mysteries won't be easy. The team finds itself split up, trapped in different rooms—or maybe planes of existence. But they can still talk to each other and must put their noggins together and romantic tension aside to escape. Meanwhile, back on the ship, a lizard fight has broken out in sickbay. In this episode of Saddle Up! hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing continue our journey through Strange New Worlds with “Through the Lens of Time.” We discuss the mystery and its film inspirations, AI, flying cameras, and the Q, Vezda, and Gorn. When Ensign Gamble joins his first dustbuster club, he picks up a grenade and gets an emergency trip back to sicksbay. But after the rest of the team solves the escape room puzzle, Captain Batel goes Gorn on Gamble's ghost and Pelia opts for maximum drama. What's the only thing more embarrassing than being a documentary filmmaker? Who got a macaron for going poopoo in the potty? Why didn't Chapel do bits on blood magic? It's the episode that adds to the list of going concerns.Support the production of Greatest TrekGet a thing at podshop.biz!Sign up for our mailing list!Greatest Trek is produced by Wynde PriddySocial media is managed by Rob Adler and Bill TilleyMusic by Adam RaguseaFriends of DeSoto for: Labor | Democracy | JusticeDiscuss the show using the hashtag #GreatestTrek and find us on social media:YouTube | Facebook | X | Instagram | TikTok | Mastodon | Bluesky | ThreadsAnd check out these online communities run by FODs: Reddit | USS Hood Discord | Facebook group | Wikia | FriendsOfDeSoto.social
Not all red shirts wear red! (But some do!) This episode has a lot of death, an alien mystery, some questionable archaeology, a reversal of cause and effect, and multi-dimensional layering. In other words: It’s Star Trek! Also, Jason passes on a wild theory about Batel’s new Gorn-chimera lifestyle. Scott McNulty and Jason Snell.
Should Starfleet risk war to save Earth colonists outside its borders? Pike faces impossible orders, Scotty doubts himself, and Dom Bettinelli, Jimmy Akin, and Fr. Jason Tyler debate morality, canon, and faith in a tense Gorn standoff.

“Shuttle to Kenfori” With Captain Batel facing the possibility of becoming an extra in the 1980s miniseries V, Doctor M'Benga and Spock hatch a plan (no pun intended) to save her by using a rare chimera blossom to combine the residual Gorn DNA in her body with her human DNA. The catch? That very special episode of Blossom only airs in one place, a planet once disputed by the Federation and Klingons. Captain Pike, wanting to play a role in saving his girlfriend, kicks Spock off the mission and assigns himself to accompany M'Benga. When they arrive on Kenfori, they find themselves in an episode of The Walking Dead. But escaping the zombies won't be as easy as they think, thanks to the arrival of Bytha, daughter of Klingon ambassador/mass murderer Dak'Rah, who is determined to exact vengeance on M'Benga. In this episode of Saddle Up! hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing continue our journey through Strange New Worlds with “Shuttle to Kenfori.” We discuss the continuation of M'Benga's story, future paths for Batel, designing TOS-inspired Klingons, insubordination, and a few creative ideas we maybe should keep to ourselves. When Captain Batel's last chance is a rare blossom from inside the restricted zone, Captain Pike and Dr. M'Benga shuttle down to a spooky garden center. But after a Klingon hunting party finds them and they fight off the flora together, only a warrior's sacrifice can get the away team back to the ship. What's bound to get old to a ghost? Why do Klingons hate flowers? How is Dr. M'Benga like the Raisin Bran sun? It's the episode that won't stand for any beeping chair erasure.Support the production of Greatest TrekGet a thing at podshop.biz!Sign up for our mailing list!Greatest Trek is produced by Wynde PriddySocial media is managed by Rob Adler and Bill TilleyMusic by Adam RaguseaFriends of DeSoto for: Labor | Democracy | JusticeDiscuss the show using the hashtag #GreatestTrek and find us on social media:YouTube | Facebook | X | Instagram | TikTok | Mastodon | Bluesky | ThreadsAnd check out these online communities run by FODs: Reddit | USS Hood Discord | Facebook group | Wikia | FriendsOfDeSoto.social

When Captain Pike is frozen in his battle armor, the Entrepreneur's only means of escape is ramming speed. But after dangling on a cliff for almost two years, Captain Batel's backside undergoes an emergency babality. Why do we remember Valeo Beta V? What does the Gorn feeding chamber not have? Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is on us like a swarm of Gorn on digestion chamber intruders. There's lots of good stuff including the some impressive action sequences, a healthy dose of Treknobabble, and a well-acted tearjerker of a scene. And then there's the bad, which mostly consists of our chair-focused pitches for the rest of the series. Beam your feedback to startrek@baldmove.com.
