Lawfare Senior Editor Eric Columbus talks with Aaron Reichlin-Melnick of the American Immigration Council to discuss what is—and isn't—likely to look different in the upcoming year of Trump administration immigration policy. After a whirlwind year, ICE and CBP have a lot more resources than at the dawn of the administration—but also a lot more opposition. How will it all shake out? All across the country, ICE and Border Patrol agents have conducted police-state-style raids and other actions that have terrorized communities and raised constitutional issues of profound importance. At the same time, numerous changes to immigration policy – many of them adopted without public knowledge or input – have made an already complex system more opaque and confusing than ever. At such a challenging moment, the nation is blessed to have a small and courageous cadre of nonprofit advocates who work each day to monitor and shine a light on the system and advocate for basic American values like due process. And recently Newsline got a chance to talk with one of the most able and best-informed attorneys working in this arena, American Immigration Council Deputy Legal Director, Raul Pinto. In Part One of our recent extended conversation with American Immigration Council Deputy Legal Director, Raul Pinto, we delved into some of the most worrisome front burner issues related to immigrants and immigration policy currently afflicting the nation – including the deeply disturbing mass raids, arrests and violence launched by the Trump administration in numerous communities across the country. In Part Two of our chat, we dug deeper into some of these and related issues, including the matter of transparency and accountability in the immigration law system and an ongoing effort by Pinto and his colleagues to compel the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to simply provide immigrants with their own immigration records. Click here for the full interview with Raul Pinto, Deputy Legal Director at the American Immigration Council Editor’s note: Newsline’s interview with Pinto was recorded before a second U.S. citizen was shot and killed by federal immigration officers in Minnesota.

Anti-ICE protests continued throughout Minnesota over the weekend, as they have for nearly two weeks now. Since the shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis, ICE agents have been getting in confrontations with the people they are targeting, and the citizens attempting to observe and document ICE's actions. The city and state are on a razor's edge — trying to observe and protest while not giving U.S. President Donald Trump an opportunity to escalate. Trump has threatened to use the Insurrection Act to deploy military troops against protesters, with some 1,500 troops reportedly standing ready. Can he do that? And can anything be done to restrain the power of ICE officers deployed to Minneapolis and beyond?Today we hear from Aaron Reichlin-Melnick. He's a Senior Fellow at the American Immigration Council and has been following all of this very closely.

Over the last six months, life has been upended for  millions of people in America as Stephen Miller's extreme immigration policies have been unleashed. And while the first weeks of the second Trump administration saw some genuine pushback from the Supreme  Court, six months in, that feint at checking and balancing has fallen away. On this week's Amicus podcast, Dahlia Lithwick welcomes Aaron Reichlin Melnick, Senior Fellow at the American Immigration Council. Reichlin Melnick last appeared on the show in the days after Trump's inauguration and the initial barrage of lawless Executive Orders targeting the immigration system and the millions caught in it. In the last few weeks, the Supreme Court has dealt more than half a million migrants a serious blow to their ability to live here in the U.S. legally. In separate orders, the court allowed the Trump administration to lift deportation protections for Venezuelans, Cubans, Nicaraguans and Haitians living here under two programs — humanitarian parole and Temporary Protected Status. While the court's orders are only temporary, it's little comfort to the hundreds of thousands of people who are now newly vulnerable to deportation. Dara Lind, a senior fellow at the American Immigration Council, explains what happens next. And in headlines: Federal authorities charged a man suspected of an antisemitic attack in Colorado with a federal hate crime, the Supreme Court declined to hear two gun rights cases, and representatives for Ukraine and Russia met in Istanbul for peace talks.Show Notes:Subscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday

President Donald Trump met with President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador in the Oval Office Monday. Their conversation centered on immigration, and specifically the wrongful deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran man whose removal the White House chalked up to an “administrative error.” Last week, the Supreme Court ordered the administration to “facilitate” Abrego Garcia's return to the U.S. But Bukele told reporters Monday he won't send him back, and Trump said no one can make him do it. Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, senior fellow at the American Immigration Council, talks about Trump's expanding immigration crackdown. And in headlines: Harvard University rebuffed the White House's list of policy demands to protect billions in federal funding, Trump again threatened CBS' '60 Minutes,' and a man accused of setting fire to the Pennsylvania Governor's Mansion was charged with attempted homicide and terrorism.Show Notes:Subscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Jason Koebler of 404 Media to discuss big tech's influence on the Trump administration and efforts to decentralize social media. Then, she speaks with Nayna Gupta, policy director at the American Immigration Council, to discuss the Trump administration's executive orders on immigration, as well as the shutting down of the CBP One app for prospective U.S. citizens. First, Emma runs through updates on Trump's aggressive anti-immigrant push, Trump's crippling of the administrative state, the nomination of Tulsi Gabbard, Senate GOP's anti-abortion push, a major labor win for Vegas hotel workers, LA's newest brush fire, and Israel's intensifying slaughters in the West Bank, before doing a little reflecting on Russell Vought, Trump's nominee for head of the Office of Management and Budget, and his attempt to shirk answering for his proclaimed desire to “traumatize” the federal bureaucrats working for him. Jason Koebler then joins, first tackling his assessment of the still-ambiguous TikTok ban, with this past week's brief announcement of Trump's app-saving measure yet to solidify, the future of the app balancing between the hope of a passive DOJ and the potential of a US-based billionaire buyer, also touching on the potential identity of said buyer (Oracle CEO Larry Ellison). After expanding on the other domestic billionaire beneficiaries of a TikTok ban (namely Meta), Koebler and Emma shift to the topic of AI – the overwhelming focus of the Tech industry at this point – and its major struggles to meet the consumer demands of utility and affordability, before looking to the value of a decentralized approach to the Tech industry and social media in providing users a cohesive and interoperable experience. Nayna Gupta then joins as she and Emma unpack the immediate impact of Trump's devastating attacks on the US immigration system, including the despair among migrants already hindered by the Biden Administration's legally- and morally-dubious attempts to undermine the asylum system as their final (legal) path into the country – via the CBP One app process – is shut down. Expanding on this, Gupta tackles the some 200k Trump has left stranded and desperate on our border, and the absurdity of claiming this does anything but further destabilize our country and the immigration system he supposedly wants to fix, a critique also applicable to the ongoing bipartisan passage of the Laken Riley Act, concluding the interview with the need for Democrats to present a genuine alternative to Trump's border militancy – something Biden and Harris objectively failed to do – centered around effective, efficient, and humane solutions to this problem that provide an actual infrastructure for legal pathways to citizenship. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton as they talk with Ally from New Hampshire about the inhumanity that conservatives hate to hide, and watch Eric Adams try to save his image with help from… Tucker Carlson. They also watch Newsmax try to paint the Pope as Satan-pilled over his criticisms of Trump, and speak with Emma's Honor Thesis from North Texas as they dive deep into the major role churches do and can play in community building and organizing in the American South. British Journalists and apparent Nazi sympathizer Angela Epstein defends Elon Musk's excitability and cleverness that lead to his Sieg Heil at Trump's inauguration, plus, your calls and IMs! Can Trump Deport Millions Of People?

What A Day

President-elect Donald Trump says he wants to declare a national emergency – and maybe even use the military – to deport around 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. The consequences could be dire: millions of families separated, livelihoods upended, an even bigger backlog of immigration court cases, and a bill that could top $350 billion. Dara Lind, senior fellow at the American Immigration Council, helps us separate facts from fears when it comes to Trump's plan. And in headlines: Trump announces a flurry of final cabinet picks, Israel's Defense Forces traded more fire with the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, and the annual U.N. climate summit wraps up with a controversial $300 billion deal.Show Notes:Check out Dara's column – https://tinyurl.com/769bxjxcSubscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday

This week Latino USA brings you an episode of Future Hindsight.Host Mila Atmos is joined by Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, the Policy Director at the American Immigration Council, a non-profit organization that strives to strengthen the United States by shaping immigration policies and practices. They discuss how out-of-date immigration laws are and why the only cure is comprehensive immigration reform from Congress.U.S. immigration laws have not changed since the 1990s. The current border enforcement and asylum system dates back to 1996, and in fact, one of the reasons that asylum seekers are living in shelters is because Congress decided in 1996 to make it illegal for them to get a work permit until six months after they apply for asylum. The asylum system is severely underfunded and is a major reason for processing delays.  In addition, there are more than 4 million people who have already been approved for visas but the wait time to get the legal status is decades long.Follow us on TikTok and YouTube. Subscribe to our newsletter by going to the top of our homepage.

This week, Alan, Quinta, and Scott were joined by Lawfare Editor-in-Chief Benjamin Wittes to talk through some of the week's biggest national security news stories, including:“Save the Last Gantz.” Leading opposition figure Benny Gantz has left Israel's war cabinet over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's failure to establish post-conflict plans for Gaza, raising serious questions about the stability of Netanyahu's far-right government. What does Gantz's departure mean for the future of the conflict?“Congress Shall Make No Law…Abridging the Freedom of [BEEP], or of the [PRESS ENTER KEY].” California is on the verge of enacting one of the country's first AI safety laws. But critics are arguing that the type of restrictions it imposes may run afoul of the First Amendment. How does AI fit with the freedom of speech—and does the First Amendment put it beyond regulatory reach?“A Stale Macron is One Tough Cookie.” Recent elections to the European Parliament saw a surge in right (and particularly far-right) parties across the continent, and most specifically in France and Germany. Fearing what this groundswell might mean for his centrist coalition, French President Emmanuel Macron has sought to cut it off at the pass by calling for snap national parliamentary elections. Is this a risky strategy or a sound one?For object lessons, Ben asked listeners how they intended to celebrate #RussiaDay on June 12. Alan celebrated an inedible apple. Quinta followed up on last week's discussion to share the American Immigration Council's analysis of the new border executive order. And Scott sang the praises of Roka, a brand of glasses that finally stays on his dumb flat face.To receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare.
