Celebrating 30 years of Star Trek Generations. In 1993, Paramount approached Star Trek executive producer Rick Berman, known for being the executive producer of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and creator of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, to develop the seventh film of the Star Trek film franchise. Recruiting writers Ronald D. Moore and Brannon Braga, Star Trek Generations is generally regarded as a weaker but not one of the worst Star Trek films and is a mixed bag amongst fans. In this episode, Part IV of Twin Cities Trekkies' Star Trek Film Extravaganza, host Wes Huntington is joined by Richard of the Nerdhat Podcast to talk about Generations, their Star Trek stories, and memories of seeing the film. nuqneH, friends! We ate'nt dead, despite what PocketCasts tells me when I open our show page.    This has been a long time in the works, mostly because editing caused me literal pain for several months. It's a short story, but quite dull. Herniated spinal disc; lots of opiates, yet still much lying on the floor wishing for the pain to end. At least SAD thought better of showing up, so small mercies and all that. Anyway. I've just finished editing the episode and just now realised that I should have written down everything that I said I would link in the show notes. Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu Cucumbers In Space by Dennis McCarthy:  YouTube Spotify Deep Space Nine Theme, with more guitars also by Dennis McCarthy: YouTube Spotify Captain of the Mount by Fall On Your Sword YouTube Spotify The Spotify version is quite different for legal reasons iirc, so it contains zero Shat. Why am I saying that like it's a bad thing? Eh. For me though, it works best as the unhinged ramblings of someone who thinks he has artistic vision, but I'm not going to deny the folks who made the track the opportunity to earn 0.002p from a listen. But srsly, Bill? Where no man has gone before?? It's El Capitan - pure hunners have been there before! Even women! sigh Data & Picard by that flaming heap of shite - I've linked to a video that uses the visuals that match the sampled lines from the show YouTube And another video about how awful Pogo is. Content warning - he's a raging bigot and uses disablism to try to cover it. The slurs are bleeped, but brace yourself. There's a lot of bleeping. Of Romulus: YouTube and Spotify Warp 11 (are they super-evolved salamanders?): YouTube and Spotify The Vulcan Freedom Fighters: Horta (where this all began for me, though a newer remix) and if you want to try for a spit-take, Spunk on Spock (Pon Farr). Here's their Spotify page, too! Saving the best? for last: The Firm, Star Trekkin'. In about 1990, my brother performed the Spock role in our local Scout and Guide Gang Show. I have no evidence, sadly. It doesn't seem to be on Spotify, sadly. The Firm, not by brother or the Gang Show from 35 years ago. There is maybe a weird kids' cover but I'm not messing up my algorithmic recommendations with that. I want to find new music I might enjoy, not torment my nephew with! I've likely missed a bunch of stuff, but if you join our Discord (it's free! But you can give us some money if you really want to) you can ask me there.  Our Facebook page is something like Facebook.com/angeltwopodcast. I think the twitter account still exists, but I deleted my personal account as soon as I was able to download my data and there's nothing that can induce me to go back to that hellsite, sorry. We are, however, on Bluesky and while swapping between accounts is still a bit cumbersome, there are significantly fewer neo-Nazis, which is nice.   P.S. Watch Deadloch! It's nothing even remotely like Star Trek, but it's hilarious and brilliant. If you're not used to Australian humour, stick with it past episode one - it's so worth the tiny effort. It's on Amazon Prime (at least, here it is) and probably the high seas if you understandably don't want to fund the corporate behemoth that will probably destroy us all. Even if they do have Picard without putting it behind the extra Paramount+ subscription.

Get your DEMYSTICON 2024 tickets here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/demysticon-2024-tickets-727054969987 The true identity of the person who wrote Shakespeare's plays has long been debated. At least 87 potential authors - from Daniel Defoe to Sir Francis Drake to Anne Hathaway to Sheikh Zubar - have been proposed as candidates, but all of these proposals suffer from the same problem - they don't quite fit the historical facts and so have to be stretched, ill fitting, to even be considered. Only one of the theories seems to make sense in context of history and biography, and it is that the true author of the plays was Sir Thomas North, soldier, lawyer, and translator. Returning guest Dennis McCarthy is joined by journalist Michael Blanding and author Derek Hunter for a conversation about uncovering the true identity of Shakespeare, the life and times of Thomas North, and the tangled thread of politics, philosophy, and liberty that stretches from the printing press to ChatGPT by way of the Old Globe. Last week (Saturday) was our Dublin, Ohio's St. Patricks Day parade and we always go to the Dublin Irish Festival in August. Our favorite bands are Gaelic Storm, We Banjo 3 and Eileen Ivers. Like the rest of the world I learned this past Tuesday, June 13th, that Cormac McCarthy had passed away at the age of 89.  This episode had already been recorded, but I thought it would still serve as an initial and quick response to the need to offer a tribute: it's a compilation of the responses to the question What's your favorite McCarthy novel, and why? from the podcast's first 16 guests. The guests responding to the "favorite book and why" question this episode are:  Steven Frye, Dianne Luce, Bill Hardwig, Nell Sullivan, Brian Giemza, Dennis McCarthy, Stacey Peebles, Paulo Faria, Jay Watson, Marty Priola, Bryan Vescio, Michael Crews, Peter Josyph, Richard Poe, Rick Wallach, Lydia Cooper, and myself.  It is worth noting that at the time of the recording It is worth noting that at the time of the recording of each of these responses, The Passenger and Stella Maris had not yet been published. A more intentional tribute will be forthcoming soon.  As posted on the society website: Cormac McCarthy  1933-2023It is with great sadness but also with deep gratitude that we mourn the loss of Cormac McCarthy. His contributions to literature, and to our lives, have been momentous. McCarthy was one of the most notable authors of his or indeed any generation. In his long, rich life, lived in places as various as Knoxville, Santa Fe, and Ibiza, his voracious curiosity led him equally to the most abstract ideas and the most downtrodden of barflies, all the cracks and corners of human thought and experience, our endless potential for both coming together and violently wrenching apart. He never compromised his devotion to the beauty of language and the necessary art of storytelling. He leaves behind an extraordinary body of work, tapestries of character, history, philosophy, environment, and the moral questions that pull at all of us. Stacey Peebles, PresidentLydia Cooper, Vice President Thanks to Thomas Frye, who composed, performed, and produced the music for READING MCCARTHY.   The views of the host and his guests do not necessarily reflect the views of their home institutions or the Cormac McCarthy Society, although in our hearts we hope they'll someday see the light.  Download and follow on Apple, Spotify, Google Play, Stitcher, or wherever you get your podcasts.  If you're agreeable it'll help us if you provide favorable reviews on these platforms.  If you enjoy this podcast you may also enjoy the GREAT AMERICAN NOVEL PODCAST, hosted by myself and Kirk Curnutt.  To contact me, please reach out to readingmccarthy(@)gmail.com. The third season of Star Trek: Picard had a lot on its shoulders: It was the final season of its show, as well as a bombastic, blockbuster-level bow for the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation. For its first two seasons, Patrick Stewart and the showrunners shied away from Starfleet uniforms and shiny utopias, and Jeff Russo's score reflected that (as we've discussed with him on this very show). But showrunner Terry Matalas had a different vision in mind for Season 3: Celebrate the crew whose adventures captured generations of fans, with a big, brassy sendoff meant to give them the finale they finally deserved.   And that they did, thanks to the tireless work of composers Stephen Barton and Frederik Wiedmann. Together, they handled hours of big orchestral sounds, crafting new themes for ships and characters like the Titan and Jack Crusher. At the same time, there was decades' worth of callbacks to Star Trek's musical legacy that needed acknowledgment, from Jerry Goldsmith's TNG theme to the movie-esque sweep of James Horner and Dennis McCarthy. Through plenty of blood, sweat, and tears, they pulled it off, crafting an immense body of work that fit snugly within the legacy of Star Trek while incorporating musical Easter eggs big and small into its superstructure.   This week on the podcast, Barton and Wiedmann join me for a nice long chat about the hectic production process, the many Trekkian cues they had to blend together, and the value of having creative collaborators (like Matalas) who know exactly what they want.   You can find Stephen Barton and Frederik Wiedmann at their official websites.   The entirety of Picard Season 3 is available for streaming on Paramount+. You can also listen to the score on your preferred music streaming service courtesy of Lakeshore Records.

Today on THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS, Erik Woods, Robert Daniels, and Randy Andrews continue their journey through the STAR TREK films and their soundtracks as they discuss the seventh movie in the series, STAR TREK: GENERATIONS. You'll hear them discuss the film in great detail including such topics as the new uniforms, deleted scenes, Kirk's death, the destruction of The Enterprise D and more. Also covered in great length is Dennis McCarthy's underappreciated score. WARNING: We do talk about Star Trek: Picard Season 3 in this episode so if you haven't seen the new series yet, you've been warned;  there are SPOILERS in this episode. STAR TREK: GENERATIONS was released on November 18, 1994. Malcolm McDowell joined cast members from the 1960s television show STAR TREK and the 1987 sequel series STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION. In the film, Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) of the USS Enterprise-D joins forces with Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) to stop the villain Tolian Soran (Malcolm McDowell) from destroying a planetary system in his attempt to return to an extra-dimensional realm known as the Nexus. The film was directed by TV veteran David Carson. The original soundtrack album was released at the time of the film's release on GNP Crescendo Records. It had a generous amount of music on the album, close to 45 minutes worth with 16 minutes of Star Trek sound effects from the film. In November of 2012, GNP Crescendo released an expanded version of the score featuring two full CDs of music expanding the run time to OVER two hours. The score was recorded by Robert Fernandez at Paramount Pictures Scoring Stage M, McCarthy conducted the Hollywood Studio Orchestra. Mark McKenzie, William Ross, and Brad Warnaar provided orchestrations. The Executive Album Reissue Producer was Dennis McCarthy. The Executive Album Producers for GNP/Crescendo Records were Neil Norman and Melanie Clarkson. The Album Reissue Producers were Ford A. Thaxton, James Nelson and Mark Banning. The Project Consultant was Lukas Kendall, with liner notes by liner notes by Jeff Bond and Lukas Kendall. The GNP Crescendo album is currently out of print! I can be streamed in realtime at www.wvud.org. On The 17th I will probably drink a little Bushmills and watch The Banshees of Inisherin. I listen to your show while in the car or doing stuff around the house. Thank You for the music you play for the world." Ken B. emailed: "1.  I am doing work around the house while listening.  2. For St. Patrick's Day I am watching my grandkids.  Will celebrate with a Black & Tan after they are put to bed. 3. I celebrate Celtic culture by going out of my way to find artists of the culture and give them a special listen.  That is where your Podcast comes in handy. You do great work.  Keep it up." Dennis McCarthy emailed: "Love the show.  Been listening for a few years. I most always listen while driving. I play the bagpipes so I am very busy during the month of March, especially on Saint Patrick's Day.  The pipe and drum bands that I am in have been playing at many local festivals and private parties in the Saint Augustine area. Thank you very much" Ellen Mandeville replied: I often do housework or go for a walk while listening. I plan to cook potato leek soup and drink Guinness on St. Patrick's day. We'll be listening to Celtic music while enjoying our St. Paddy's day meal.

Dennis McCarthy is a writer, historian, and independent researcher who, in the process of tracing Hamlet's origin, ended up unwinding the entire legend of Shakespeare. Digging deeper into the history of Shakespeare's plays alongside collaborators June Schlueter and Michael Blanding, McCarthy uncovered evidence that all but two of Shakespeare's plays were written by Sir Thomas North, an English translator, lawyers, and justice of the peace. We dig into the evidence for the overlap between the two figures, unpack the myth of the lone genius, and seek to understand how the origin of ideas is driven by the sum total of the biogeographic connections that impinge on a given time and place. It's a paradox that has bothered Shakespeare's fans for centuries: the man was as insightful into human beings as anyone whoever lived, and yet his own life is barely documented. This combination of literary genius plus biographical uncertainty has spun off a number of mysteries - including the question of how exactly Shakespeare came to know the things that he did. In this episode, Jacke talks to investigative journalist Michael Blanding, author of In Shakespeare's Shadow, about a renegade scholar named Dennis McCarthy's theory that Shakespeare may have drawn upon a previously unknown source - the lost plays of Sir Thomas North - and how Blanding himself joined the pursuit of searching for evidence to support McCarthy's theory.
