An entertaining podcast about being a black and nerdy 40-something mom.
It's been a rough week in the Blerd World. We're in Philly saying goodbye (for now!) to Amalgam Comics. We also say our goodbyes to our friend, supporter, and BlerdCon co-founder, Haas Parish and comic book store owner Lashawn Colvin. Rest in Blerd Peace! Thanks to Ariell Johnson, owner of Amalgam for letting us record there and we look forward to her next big thing!

Will's favorite all time book series, Dune by Frank Herbert comes to the big screen FINALLY in a much better way than the 1980s version did. Hear our thoughts. Merch! T-shirts, mugs, etc: www.blerdmom.com/shop/ Journals Entrepreneur's Diary Pre-order Antidote Tonight's cocktails: Pear Elderflower Martini (from: https://kitchenswagger.com/pear-elderflower-martini-recipe/) 2 ounces pear vodka (Grey goose La Poire is definitely best. I tried the Absolute Pear for a while and there really is no comparison.) 1/2 ounce St. Germain Elderflower Liquer 1 ounce lemon juice 1 ounce simple syrup Pour all ingredients into a shaker with some ice. Shake well. Strain into glass. Garnish with a slice of pear if you'd like, but I never have pears on hand, so I rarely do that. Will's Favorite Martini 2 ounces Uncle Nearest 1856 Whiskey 1 ounce Dolin Rouge Sweet Vermouth (the red one) 2 drops (DROPS not dashes) Angostura bitters 1 drop (again DROP) Orange bitters Luxardo Original Maraschino Cherries (not those hot mess super red cherries you can buy anywhere) I usually start with the bitters because if you get too much it make the whole drink WAY too bitter. This way, If I get too much in, I start over. Add in the Whiskey and Vermouth. Add 2 cherries, plus just a little of the syrup they come in. Stir gently. (Sorry Bond, no shaking here.) Traditional is without ice (neat), but add a cube or 2 of ice if you prefer. When we have them, we use the large slow melting ice spheres.
It's our favorite month here at BlerdMom and probably not for the reason you think. It's not the costumes. It's the old, terrible Halloween movies we love to watch. Vincent Price, Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee are in constant rotation around here all October. Sabrina and Will had an opportunity to see a preview episode of HBO's upcoming series: Lovecraft Country - staring Jonathan Majors, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Courtney Vance, and Michael K. Smith. Directed, written and produced by Misha Green (Underground) and executive produced by Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us) and J.J. Abrams (Lost, Star Trek, Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Lovecraft Country tells the story of a young man who goes on a journey from his hometown in Chicago to "Lovecraft Country" -- a place filled with monsters -- the otherworldly kind and the racist human kind, to find his missing father with his uncle and childhood friend tagging along.
