This week, we conclude our dive into the films of Alfred Hitchcock! Our final film in the series is the 1963 classic: The Birds. Tippi Hedren and Rod Taylor star in this thriller as Melanie and Mitch, a young would-be couple who find their mutual flirting interrupted by a bizarre phenomenon of birds of all species attacking people and property in the small fishing community of Bodega Bay, California. Jessica Tandy, Suzanne Pleshette, and Veronica Cartwright round out the cast. We dig into the ethics of directing a cast, the pressures placed on actors on film sets, the Oscars, and some detours into Florida Man and politics. How to Survive is on Patreon! Support us at Patreon.com/HowtoSurvivePod It's episode 217...how dare you disobey your mother?! Coraline (2009) tells the story of Coraline (duh), a precocious and bored 11-year old girl who discovers an alternate world hidden through a tunnel in her house, where everything is exactly as it seems and it's all fine and there's nothing at all to worry about, the end. Except for rats, bats, button-eyes, and the nefarious Other Mother. We ask whether animated 'horror' can ever be scary, if body-free body horror exists, Joe proposes a baseball bat-shaped solution to Coraline's woes, and we delve into the murky world of MK-Ultra with the help of a spurious conspiracy theory website. All of which leads to one important question: How would you survive? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: Now you're going to stay here forever. Next week, you'll be flocking back to the podcast for the start of 'Animals in Films' season with an all-time classic: Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds (1963). Get in touch! Hello Dear Listeners, Sorry for the delay this week! We had many things happening and had some technical challenges. Fear not! We have returned to give you a reason to be afraid, even as we move through spring and into the sunny summer season. Don't you all remember that horror in the daylight is real!? Join Katya and Laramie as they discuss (and sing about) Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds. There is plenty to be afraid of in this one. Creepy movie directors, condescending lawyers, women breaking into houses to leave birds, birds that peck out eyes (so many eyes!!), if its bird or misogyny related this movie probably has it!! Plus, Katya and Laramie discuss the horror of coming to terms with the bad behavior of artists we love. Special shout outs to The Roxy Theater here in Missoula for screening The Birds, and our wonderful listener Lindsey C.! **Clinkies** Katya and Laramie
In director Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds, Melanie Daniels is a rich socialite with a reputation for the unexpected. When lawyer Mitch Brenner plays a bit of a prank at her expense, she decides to return the favor. She then heads to the remote seaside community of Bodega Bay, where Mitch spends the weekends with his mother Lydia and younger sister Cathy. Also entering the picture is Mitch's former flame, Annie. All seems to be heading towards a romance for the ages when the town is under siege from random bird attacks. Beginning in small waves before escalating into all-out war, Bodega Bay now belongs to...The Birds! Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds has been up for a remake for several years, and for this episode, we decided to throw caution and memories of Gus Van Sant to the wind. Does the story need updating? Should characters or motives be tweaked? Do we need more muppets? We take all factors into account, concoct our film, and then offer a Final Pitch to you in movie trailer form. By the end of each episode, we will Remake This Movie RIGHT! Our show is broken down into three distinct parts: The Original: We discuss the original film’s impact, some quick trivia bits, what worked the best from the film and therefore must remain in our upcoming remake, and what didn’t work or what needs to be changed for today’s audiences. The Remake: We put together our movie! What story do we want to tell, how close to the original will it be, who will star, and ultimately who should direct our eventual cinematic masterpiece? Our hosts work together to put together one cohesive movie, but there is one caveat - Each host has one ‘CUT!’ throughout the episode to employ which could completely derail the entire film. The Final Pitch: This is where we summarize our remake by utilizing the voice talents of voiceover artist Wayne Henderson and present our finished remake to you in movie trailer form! During the siege of Leningrad in World War II, a heroic group of Russian botanists fought cold, hunger, and German attacks to keep alive a storehouse of crops that held the future of Soviet agriculture. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll tell the story of the Vavilov Institute, whose scientists literally starved to death protecting tons of treasured food. We'll also follow a wayward sailor and puzzle over how to improve the safety of tanks. Intro: Tippi Hedren, star of Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds, shared her home with a 400-pound lion. In 2009, a California consumer sued PepsiCo for implying that crunchberries are a fruit. Sources for our feature on Nikolai Vavilov: S.M. Alexanyan and V.I.
