This payday Amber and Erika are discussing Black capitalism and why money isn't enough to save us from the pitfalls of the system. Using two hot-button current events - the Uncle Nearest lawsuit and receivership and Target boycott - we breakdown why capitalism is inherently anti-black and an ineffective liberatory tool. Both examples point to the limitations of capitalism and why Black people's lack of ownership of the means of production prevents the independence necessary to generate capitalistic gain. Gleaning wisdom from Malcolm X's evolving beliefs on Black economics and capitalism, this episode highlights why being pro-Black necessarily requires being anti-capitalism. Dr Boyce Watkins breaks down the situation with Uncle Nearest
Send us a textBuried in the storied history of American whiskey lies an untold tale of innovation, mentorship, and the extraordinary impact of one man—Nearest Green. As the first African American master distiller in the United States, Green's legacy was nearly lost to time until the creation of Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey. In this episode, we crack open the Uncle Nearest Black Label Single Barrel, bottled at a robust 123 proof, and dive deep into the fascinating history behind the brand. The story unfolds like a historical drama—Jack Daniel, as a young orphan sent to work as a chore boy, meets Nearest Green, an enslaved man with profound knowledge of distillation. Green teaches Daniel a special charcoal filtering technique from West Africa that would eventually become known as the Lincoln County Process—the defining characteristic that separates Tennessee whiskey from bourbon. As we sip this mahogany-colored spirit, we explore its grassy notes with hints of vanilla wafer sweetness and leathery undertones, discussing how the charcoal filtering affects the flavor profile. The whiskey delivers a quick heat that stays on the top of the mouth rather than giving that typical "Kentucky hug," leading to a grain-forward finish that sparked considerable debate about its overall balance and character.Beyond the liquid in our glasses, we examine the meteoric rise of Uncle Nearest as a brand—from its founding in 2017 to winning hundreds of awards and expanding to all 50 states and 12 countries in just a few years. However, this rapid growth has led to recent financial troubles, with reports of a $108 million loan default threatening the company's future.Whether you're fascinated by whiskey history, interested in supporting historically significant brands, or simply looking for your next premium bottle, join us for this enlightening conversation about a spirit that's more than just a drink—it's a long-overdue recognition of a pivotal figure in American whiskey heritage.

In this episode of the Bourbon Pursuit Podcast, we take on the very serious and complex situation surrounding Uncle Nearest. We're diving headfirst into the new lawsuit from Farm Credit, which alleges Uncle Nearest defaulted on over $100 million in loans, citing financial mismanagement and inflated barrel inventory. The discussion gets real, as our panel unpacks the legal jargon and business strategies, putting a spotlight on how a prior CFO's actions have complicated the entire case. We'll analyze what a federal judge's ruling for receivership could mean for the distillery and its co-founders, Fawn and Keith Weaver. We also reflect on how the rapid growth of the bourbon market post-pandemic might have contributed to this crisis and how a breakdown in communication between the distillery and its lender fueled the fire. Finally, we'll tackle listener questions and talk about the emotional weight of this case on the people who support the brand, showing why the implications of this go far beyond just one company. This one is a must-listen. Show Notes: Overview of Uncle Nearest's lawsuit from Farm Credit Mid-America Discussion on allegations of financial mismanagement and inflated inventory reporting Implications of the receivership ruling on the distillery's operations Analysis of financial trends and recklessness in the bourbon industry Insights on the founders' stories in the context of American whiskey history Speculation about the brand's future and community impact Audience engagement and reflections on the significance of the case Support this podcast on Patreon Learn more about your ad choices. Rupee Beer founders Van and Sumit Sharma believe they're ready to meet Indian cuisine's moment. On the latest edition of the Brewbound Podcast, the brothers share their journey of launching the Indian American beer brand during the COVID-19 pandemic as an add-on purchase at their family's restaurant. Today, Rupee has expanded distribution to 18 states – most recently California – and the Sharmas are readying for an “explosion” of Indian restaurants entering the U.S market. “We're doing something that really directly ties it into the only story that we know, which is restaurants,” Van Sharma said. “That's what we grew up in, more specifically, Indian restaurants.” Rupee's beer has found its way onto menus in Thai, Middle Eastern, Persian, Latin American and Caribbean restaurants. “Anywhere global flavor, spice, those things hang out, that's where we're operating these days,” Van Sharma said. “Legacy brands out there definitely paved the way, but we're doing something a little bit different, which also involves a little bit more of the local, craft American space as well.” Although the Shamras built Rupee's business primarily through the on-premise channel, they're now getting the attention of national retailers and they're leaning into their chain business. Rupee is bringing new innovation to the Indian beer segment, which hasn't seen an influx of new brands, Van Sharma said. Later in the episode, The Sharmas discuss their strategy for engaging consumers and gaining their attention in retail stores, as well as their approach to building their distribution network and where they want to go next. Plus, Justin, Jess and Zoe catch up on the latest headlines, including why it's not time to panic despite the Gallup survey's recent results on Americans drinking habits. They give a legal update on Uncle Nearest and the recipe agreement dispute between Schilling Cider and Incline. They also recap recent bev-alc experiences, from a growing dislike for black cherry flavors, to a sweaty trip to the Iowa State Fair.
