Believe it or not, Brian and TJ sat down to do a FlyBy - not only that, they saw three movies starring one character; Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie). They watched: 2016's Suicide Squad, based on the DC Comics supervillain team of the same name. Written and directed by David Ayer and starring Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Scott Eastwood, Karen Fukuhara, Ike Barinholtz, and Cara Delevingne. Sadly they actually watched the extended version of this "movie." They followed up with a movie that went through an identity crisis in 2020's Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), or Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey or simply Birds of Prey based on the DC Comics team, the Birds of Prey and serves as both a spin-off and sequel to Suicide Squad (2016). It was directed by Cathy Yan and written by Christina Hodson, starring Margot Robbie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Rosie Perez, Chris Messina, Ella Jay Basco, Ali Wong, and Ewan McGregor. And finally, they tackled the movie people on Twitter have been talking about for weeks (so why not add fuel to this fire); 2021's THE Suicide Squad, a standalone sequel to Suicide Squad (2016). Written and directed by James Gunn and stars an ensemble cast including Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, and Peter Capaldi. More Than the Sum of Its Parts It's time. Lovecraft Country episode one debuts tonight August 16th on HBO, 9 PM ET. Set your DVR, get that streaming access ready. This is one limited series you don't want to miss.  Based on the Matt Ruff book by the same name, Lovecraft Country brings the saga of Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) and his family and friends as they attempt to unravel a dangerous supernatural mystery buried in the roots of his family lineage.  Showrunner Misha Green centers the Black family, the everyday and mundane nature of striving for more in a world designed to keep you dispossessed. The cast lead by Majors also includes: Courtney B. Vance, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Michael Kenneth Williams, Aunjanue Ellis, Jada Harris, and Wunmi Mosaku and trust and believe, no one is ready for what's about to go down. And that's a good thing.   Lovecraft Country Episode One: Sundown  Life in this 1950s setting has a pulse and vibrancy not often incorporated in the visual elements where Black life in all its many facets lie at the heart of the storytelling. Expect glorious fashion and vibrant settings as the backdrop to the gritty realities of living and moving under segregation and that's before you ever get to the gore, magical, and other horrific story elements. Family Matters This story opens with Atticus traveling from Florida to Chicago. He's heading home after receiving an alarm-raising letter from his father. This Korean War veteran is a much changed man from the awkward skinny kid who left to go to war. But regardless of all else, Atticus loves his family and intends to find his father and see him safely back in the family fold.  There's no importing "contemporary" sensibilities into the world-building of Lovecraft Country. Instead these writers deliberately reflect life in Jim Crow America. Starting with dispelling the myth that anti-Black sentiment stopped once you crossed into the North. We meet Atticus along his journey just before his bus home breaks down leaving him with no option but to finish the walk into the city with the other Black person seated in the back of the bus.  Jonathan Majors in Lovecraft Country. Photograph by Elizabeth Morris/HBO Right out the gate, Lovecraft Country leaves no doubt its that interrogating trauma on multiple levels. Just as Watchmen forced people to recognize the banality of racism and white supremacy in America. Every bit of dialogue between characters is insightful, the soundtrack purposeful, and the lead-in to the horror riddled with historical Easter eggs and multi-level fantastical storytelling.  Listen as Ro, Kriss and Ava's Daddy (formally known as Phenom) sit down for the first of many conversations to discuss Lovecraft Country's episode, Sundown.  This is Misha Green's Lovecraft Country now.  Lovecraft Country meets at the intersection of life in the 1950s Jim Crow America and cosmic horror. Expect the veil between the horrors of the everyday and the supernatural to thin. It's anthology-style is a perfect framework to continuously set it off. Every moment will raise questions about which horror is ultimately more damaging to the psyche. Prepare because Lovecraft's lens is unapologetically conscious, undeniably Black, and absolutely to here to challenge as it entertains like nothing else coming to the lineup.  Like what you hear? Abrams (Lost, Star Trek, Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Lovecraft Country tells the story of a young man who goes on a journey from his hometown in Chicago to "Lovecraft Country" -- a place filled with monsters -- the otherworldly kind and the racist human kind, to find his missing father with his uncle and childhood friend tagging along. Listen to our first impressions and check out Lovecraft Country on August 16 on HBO Max.www.blerdmom.com/subscribe Bonus contentWatch us geek out with some other Blerds over Lovecraft Country

MOVIE DISCUSSION: A few weeks ago, Daniel sent me a text on Messenger: Hey man, I like Harley Quinn. Birds of Prey looks neat. Want to do a discussion episode? And now, here we are, Cinematic Doctrine’s first-ever film discussion episode! This will be very different to the typical movie reviews, or better yet, audio essays that Cinematic Doctrine has previously offered. However, a lot of the process going into this episode has remained the same. Daniel and I still did our research, we still prepared some talking points, we still approached Birds of Prey’s cultural talking points with a biblical perspective. Perhaps the biggest change you’ll notice between this episode and any other film-review offered from Cinematic Doctrine is that it will be far less eloquent. Even though, that’s fine. Most podcast aren’t eloquent. For this episode, Daniel and I will talk about our immediate thoughts on Birds of Prey and how it’s R-Rating might negatively impact its themes of women’s empowerment. We talk about its underwhelming opening weekend box office numbers and the many things keeping the Birds of Prey from taking flight. We dig into its connections with perhaps one of the worst superhero films ever made, Suicide Squad, and how that film may have impacted Birds of Prey in more negative ways than one. And finally, Daniel and I discuss the value of watching a film whose main character is a villain from start to finish, and lightly contrast that to last years breakout Comic Book movie Joker. Tune in weekly for new episodes of Cinematic Doctrine! Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is Rated R for strong violence and language throughout, and some sexual and drug material. It features Margot Robbie, Rosie Perez, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Ella Jay Basco, Ewan McGregor, and Chris Messina Directed by Cathy Yan Patreon: http://bit.ly/CinDocPatreon Facebook Group: http://bit.ly/CinDocFBGroup Letterboxd: http://bit.ly/LetterboxdCinDocList Website: CinematicDoctrine.com Email: CinematicDoctrine@Gmail.com Daniel's Twitter: @TomRhonda1Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/CinematicDoctrine)

Margot Robbie played Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad in 2016. Now, she's back in Birds of Prey. It finds Harley crossing paths with characters played by Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rosie Perez, and a very bad villain played by Ewan McGregor. The film provides the backstory for the team that will become the Birds of Prey, and it develops the character of Harley beyond her relationship with the Joker.

Popcorn Junkies Movie Reviews

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), or simply Birds of Prey, is a 2020 American superhero film based on the DC Comics team Birds of Prey. It is the eighth film in the DC Extended Universe, and a follow-up to Suicide Squad (2016). It was directed by Cathy Yan and written by Christina Hodson, and stars Margot Robbie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Rosie Perez, Chris Messina, Ella Jay Basco, Ali Wong, and Ewan McGregor. The film follows Harley Quinn as she joins forces with Black Canary, Helena Bertinelli, and Renee Montoya to save Cassandra Cain from Gotham City crime lord Black Mask. Robbie, who also serves as producer, pitched the idea for Birds of Prey to Warner Bros. in 2015. The film was announced in May 2016, with Hodson being hired to write the script that November, while Yan signed on to direct in April 2018. The majority of the cast and crew were confirmed by December 2018. Principal photography lasted from January to April 2019 in Downtown Los Angeles, parts of the Arts District, Los Angeles, and soundstages at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California. Additional filming took place in September 2019. Birds of Prey is the first DCEU film and the second DC Films production to be rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America. The film had its world premiere in Mexico City on January 25, 2020, and was theatrically released in the United States in IMAX, Dolby Cinema and 4DX on February 7, 2020. The film received praise from critics for its visual style, Yan's direction, and the performances of Robbie and McGregor, but criticism for the perceived lack of depth --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/popcorn-junkies/message

When two of Gotham's most notorious villains break-up...the rebound is criminal. This is a review of the new film, Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn... Harley Quinn and the Joker are splitsville and that puts a huge target on her back drawing the attention of crime boss Black Mask. Director Cathy Yan brings us to her version of Gotham City which is feeling the wrath of the breakup... Margot Robbie is spot-on again as Harley Quinn...who was dating the Joker...but surprise, two psychopaths had some relationship issues... She gets some help battling the city's henchmen from the talented and tough Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary... ...the Huntress played by the dangerous and remarkably funny Mary Elizabeth-Winstead... ...and Rosie Perez is a jaded Gotham Cop who's sent packing by the force...and has the most amazing wardrobe...you'll see what I mean. I had a good time following this Joker-free all-girl group of villains in vigilantes... ...but it did feel like it was missing something...kinda like the Venom movie...with no Spider-Man. The story was a bit thin, the script was uneven... ...but I loved the acting, the camera work was cool...the different takes and views really worked. And while I know there was a lot of CGI ...the fight scenes themselves were well choreographed with some great stunts and quality kills and injuries ...taking a page from the John Wick movies... ...a welcome change from the blurry mess you get in Marvel flicks. And because of all that...I give Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn... ...three and a half stars out of five on the Rob Rating Scale.

THE CONVO:  Viola Davis has big shoes to fill as she's got the part to play Michelle Obama for a new showtime series! Also, the team behind the Simpsons have gone on attack after Mike Pompeo used the show for a meme to fire a shot at Nancy Pelosi.  THE FLICK:  Birds Of Prey Or The Fabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn - The DC Cinematic Universe continues on its upswing with this new film that will hopefully wash the taste of Suicide Squad out of our mouths as this is the second kick at the can for Margot Robbie's version of Harley Quinn, now shedding the shackles of the abusive Jared Leto Joker and looking to be a force for good alongside the rest of the Birds Of Prey. Who are they? Well, we have the supersonic ass-kicker of Black Canary, played by Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Huntress, an assassin played by Ramona Flowers herself Mary Elizabeth Winstead and the iconic Rosie Perez playing Gotham City detective Renee Montoya, a comic favorite. Together they take of Ewan McGregor's villain character who is looking like he's having an insanely good time playing this bad guy. The reviews are good so I am excited. THE BINGE: The Pharmacist (Netflix) - Another documentary series to piss you off and make you paranoid but something that will hopefully educate you, this is a four episode series about a small town pharmacist who decides to conduct his own investigation into the 1999 murder of his son in New Orleans and starts to see connections to his own industry that are quite disturbing. I only meant to watch the first episode just to give myself a feel for the show and found myself pounding back each episode like a good old fashioned Netflix binge. The Batman is officially on the way and will land on June 25, 2021. Ben Affleck has exited the role in favor of a new, younger actor to play Bruce Wayne and his alter-ego. Director Matt Reeves says the film will be a noir-inspired detective story with Batman facing off against several members of his rogues gallery. Who could take over the role? Names like Armie Hammer and Jon Hamm have been thrown out — even Nick Jonas! James Gunn is also in negotiations to direct The Suicide Squad, which drops on August 6, 2021 and will feature a new cast and roster of characters. We also got our first look at Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn featuring Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Ella Jay Basco, Rosie Perez, Chris Messina and Ewan McGregor. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/heroesreforged/support
