We don't believe the Gospel. Most days we lean into legalism: when we're good, God will bless us and when we fail, God will afflict us. Jesus at Matthew's dinner party is critical to understand who Jesus is - and who He enjoys hanging out with! Christ Our Redeemer sermon from August 13, 2017. Roanoke, VA. Pastor: Tom Oster www.christourredeemer.com
The only way we can live these new lives in Christ is to walk in the Spirit (Gal.5:16). To use our August Training Camp analogy: the only way to play the game, the only way to still be standing at the end of the 4th quarter is "to walk in the power of the Spirit". Christ Our Redeemer sermon from August 6, 2017. Roanoke, VA. Pastor: Tom Oster www.christourredeemer.com
"Such great faith!" Jesus was amazed by the Centurion's faith. What was it about his actions and words that evoked such a comment from Jesus? Jesus said He had not found such faith in all Israel - maybe we should retool some of our definitions of faith based on the Centurion. Christ Our Redeemer sermon from July 30, 2017. Roanoke, VA. Pastor: Tom Oster www.christourredeemer.com
The ministry of Barnabas Aid is to send financial support to projects which help Christians where they suffer discrimination, oppression and persecution as a consequence of their faith. The projects aim to strengthen Christian individuals, churches and their communities by providing material and spiritual support in response to needs identified by local Christian leaders. Even though Paul's 'departure' is at hand, he solemnly charges Timothy to pick up the torch and run the race. Even though people with itchy ears will wander away from sound teaching, nevertheless - preach the Word! Christ Our Redeemer sermon from June 25, 2017. Roanoke, VA. Pentecost marked the birth of the Church. The Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples, who were in Jerusalem, and the Gospel was preached to people from around the known world. Today, we rely on the Holy Spirit to continue the ministry of the Gospel through us as we bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to our "Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the ends of the earth. Christ Our Redeemer sermon from June 4, 2017. Roanoke, VA. Pastor: Austin Calhoun www.christourredeemer.com
Selfish choices and preoccupations isolate us as captives unable to receive God’s grace. Jesus calls us to give up the worthless trinkets of our self-centeredness and receive his gift of life lived truly large. Nothing, even the worst choices in lives gone terribly wrong, can separate God’s children from his love for them in Christ Jesus. Christ Our Redeemer sermon from May 28, 2017. Roanoke, VA. Speaker: Don Wetherington www.christourredeemer.com
Christ Our Redeemer sermon from May 21, 2017. Roanoke, VA. Pastor: Tom Oster www.christourredeemer.com
Timothy's sincere faith was intentionally transmitted to him by his mother and his grandmother. And by Paul. "Continue" Paul says, "because you know those from whom you learned this." Christ Our Redeemer sermon from May 14, 2017. Roanoke, VA. Pastor: Tom Oster www.christourredeemer.com
At the heart of 2 Tim. 3 is Paul's exhortation to "continue in what Timothy has learned and become convinced of." There are "terrible times" in these last days. 'False teachers' abound and "everyone in the province of Asia has deserted Paul." What should Timothy do in the face of all this? In one word: "Continue!' Christ Our Redeemer sermon from May 7, 2017. Christ Our Redeemer sermon from April 30, 2017. Roanoke, VA. Pastor: Austin Calhoun www.christourredeemer.com
The problem with church buildings is that they can give Jesus and His mission a local address and thereby eclipse the theology of the priesthood of every believer: that God is powerfully at work IN us and WITH us all week long right where we are. The Joseph Story is one of the best places to look for an answer to our questions about the sense of the absence of God more than of His presence in our lives. Where was God? A. "The LORD was with Joseph." How so? To bring blessing through Joseph to others. This is the startling climax of the Book of Genesis! Christ Our Redeemer sermon from April 9, 2017. Roanoke, VA. Pastor: Tom Oster www.christourredeemer.com
It seems like such a "Dah!" comment for Paul to tell Timothy, his 'main man' to "remember Jesus" (2 Tim.2:8). Timothy is an evangelist for crying out loud!. What's up with that? What's up is that nothing is more urgent than to preach the Gospel to ourselves every single day. So, "remember Jesus Christ"... today, especially if it's 'simply Tuesday'! Christ Our Redeemer sermon from April 2, 2017. Roanoke, VA. Pastor: Tom Oster www.christourredeemer.com
The Gospel has come to you and I because faithful others didn't just receive the Gospel, but were entrusted with passing it on. There is a living chain that has stretched for 2,000 years from Paul, to Timothy, to faithful men, who in turn entrusted it to still others. Where are you a link in that chain? Christ Our Redeemer sermon from March 26, 2017. Roanoke, VA. Pastor: Tom Oster www.christourredeemer.com
Even gifted leaders like Timothy (like Peter!) need encouragement to stand unashamed of the testimony about Jesus. When we adjust the Gospel to the expectations of our culture, we muzzle its power to gain respectability before men. To be unashamed is the best way to "guard the Gospel." Christ Our Redeemer sermon from March 19, 2017. Roanoke, VA. Pastor: Tom Oster www.christourredeemer.com
In this introduction to the 2nd letter to Timothy, we hear Paul remind and exhort his first lieutenant to not settle for lukewarm in the application of his gifts and energies to advancing the gospel. A good reminder for all of us! Christ Our Redeemer sermon from March 5, 2017. Roanoke, VA. Pastor: Tom Oster www.christourredeemer.com
It is the Gospel of Jesus. It is the Gospel of the Kingdom. When we reduce our message to 'how to get saved', we are no longer preaching the Gospel that Jesus and His apostles preached. Christ Our Redeemer sermon from February 26, 2017. Roanoke, VA. Pastor: Tom Oster www.christourredeemer.com
The CROSS is the fulfillment of Isa. 53 "the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all." Substitutionary Atonement means He was crucified in my place. And therefore, it also means that in Christ, I too have been crucified. Christ Our Redeemer sermon from February 19, 2017. Roanoke, VA. Pastor: Tom Oster www.christourredeemer.com
Jesus draws near when we are walking away from the Cross and explains from Scripture why His suffering and death were necessary and how He is the fulfillment of Israel's long, long story. Christ Our Redeemer sermon from February 12, 2017. Roanoke, VA. Pastor: Tom Oster www.christourredeemer.com
Sin keeps us from the presence of God, but idolatry keeps us from becoming fully human. Jesus died on the Cross to deliver us from our sins and to uncover and deliver us from the idols of our hearts. Christ Our Redeemer sermon from February 5, 2017. Roanoke, VA. Pastor: Tom Oster www.christourredeemer.com
In Genesis 18, God invites Abraham to step into real partnership, to be a priest, to pray for the city of Sodom. "Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do?" is one of those breath-taking verses that is behind Abraham description as the friend of God. Not: "I can use a man like you" but more amazing: "What shall we do together?" Christ Our Redeemer sermon from January 29, 2017. Roanoke, VA. Pastor: Tom Oster www.christourredeemer.com
We are created in the image of God(Gen. 1:26,7). I'm not "just" a forgiven sinner. The work of Christ is God's Master Plan of Redemption to restore us, day by day, "after the image of our Creator" (Col. 3:10) and to place us, as His regents, to work and care for the garden of His good creation. Christ Our Redeemer sermon from January 22, 2017. Roanoke, VA. Pastor: Tom Oster www.christourredeemer.com
Jesus did not die on the cross so we could go to heaven. The achievement of the Cross was the inauguration of the Kingdom on earth, and will be, in the end, the full restoration of God's good creation. Therefore, true spirituality is not a gnostic escape from our bodies, but rather a robustly enfleshed, whole person, spirituality. Christ Our Redeemer sermon from January 15, 2017. Roanoke, VA. Pastor: Tom Oster www.christourredeemer.com
I looked to see the Lion of Judah on the throne and I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain (Rev.5:6). Jesus the Lamb of God reigns from His throne: the Cross. The Cross then becomes the lens through which we come to see everything now most clearly. Christ Our Redeemer sermon from January 8, 2017. Roanoke, VA. Pastor: Tom Oster www.christourredeemer.com
Christ Our Redeemer sermon from December 24, 2016. Roanoke, VA. Pastor: Tom Oster www.christourredeemer.com
When God causes the light of the knowledge of the GLORY of God to shine in our hearts, we begin to be transformed into His image from glory to GLORY! Christ Our Redeemer sermon from December 18, 2016. Roanoke, VA. Pastor: Tom Oster www.christourredeemer.com
This is a most helpful reminder from the Psalms that we are to school our hearts and not just our heads, and that the adventure of being Christian is as much about delight as it is about duty. The greatest commandment is to 'love God', not work for Him. Christ Our Redeemer sermon from December 11, 2016. Roanoke, VA. Pastor: Tom Oster www.christourredeemer.com
Jn. 14. Jesus is not about Jesus. "The chief end of Jesus was to glorify His Father!" And so he can tell Phillip that to see Him WAS to have seen the Father! God in the flesh: in that manger in Bethlehem and hanging on the Cross of Calvary. We know no other God than this. Christ Our Redeemer sermon from December 4, 2016. Roanoke, VA. Pastor: Tom Oster www.christourredeemer.com
The word group of 'glory, glorify and glorious' is everywhere present in our Scriptures, but what do they really mean? The birth of Christ is accompanied by repeated references to the "glory of God" - how does Jesus reveal the glory of God? How does He redefine glory? If "the chief end of man is to glorify God" - how do I do that? This is the introduction to our Advent series on GLORY. Christ Our Redeemer sermon from November 27, 2016. Roanoke, VA. Pastor: Tom Oster www.christourredeemer.com
What is God's will for your life? 1 Thess. 5:16-18: the three disciplines that train us to notice God's providential hand in "all circumstances" and thus to "give thanks" for God's good graces in our daily lives Christ Our Redeemer sermon from November 20, 2016. "Peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake" (Rev. 8:5). John's vision graphically portrays the power of prayer. We experienced that at Wallens Ridge State Prison. Christ Our Redeemer sermon from November 6, 2016. Roanoke, VA. Pastor: Tom Oster www.christourredeemer.com
We live in an anxious world. How are we to live, as Christ followers, with lives full of things to worry about? Pastor: Austin Calhoun www.christourredeemer.com
Christ Our Redeemer sermon from October 23, 2016. Roanoke, VA. Pastor: Tom Oster www.christourredeemer.com
Does Grace cancel out obedience? No way! Only when Grace moves us to surrender to a Perfect Love does the obedience of Faith become a work of art - willingness, rather than the willfulness of grudging compliance.
