We don't talk about the Spirit enough, and yet he is the most vital to our daily spiritual lives, for it is the Spirit who empowers these gifts in everyone for the common good, Paul says. “Gifted hands. Gifted eyes. Gifted ears.” No hand our eyes or ears do anything. It is the brain that makes it happen. If I go brain dead, my hands fall limp. If my brain goes, so goes the sermon from my mouth. I can look through binoculars but the binoculars do not see. They are the instrument through which I see. That the brain works through the organs. And that if the brain is not there, or if it stops functioning, then all the organs stop functioning too. In the same way, Christ is the Head of the Church. His Spirit works through our gifts, which is why its important to know your giftedness and act on it. The Spirit helps us have meaning and gifts to use.
This episode addresses a tension many believers feel but rarely understand: why truth, rules, and even Scripture can feel lifeless or oppressive. Drawing from 2 Corinthians 3, Dr. Jim explains that the issue is not the Word of God, but the absence of dependence on the Spirit of God. True Christianity is not self-powered obedience but Spirit-empowered life.Topics DiscussedThe meaning of “the letter killeth, but the Spirit giveth life”Why truth without the Spirit produces frustration rather than transformationHow rules and standards provoke rebellion when divorced from graceThe difference between self-effort Christianity and Spirit-enabled obedienceWhy the solution is not rejecting the Word, but relying on the SpiritKey TakeawaysThe Bible is never the problem; dependence on self is.Obedience without the Spirit leads to defeat, not freedom. The Spirit gives life to truth, enabling joyful, willing obedience.Christianity only works when Christ Himself is the source of power.Real freedom comes through surrender and faith, not self-discipline alone. Life in the Spirit (Romans 8:1-17)
Romans 8:5-17
If Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. — Romans 8:10 I used to think that becoming a new person in Christ meant I had to change myself—clean up, perform better, strive harder. But that left me exhausted and frustrated. The truth is that we're not called to muster up new life in our own strength. That's the Holy Spirit's role. Romans 8 reminds us that if Christ lives in us, then his Spirit breathes life into places that were once lifeless. The Spirit doesn't just improve our old selves—he transforms us from the inside out. That's powerful. It means we can stop trying to force change; instead, we can be open to what the Spirit wants to do in us. Whether you're battling old habits, healing from deep wounds, or longing to change in new ways, take heart. You are not alone, and you are not powerless. The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you. That's not just motivation—it's resurrection power at work. Let today be about surrender, not striving. The Spirit knows what needs to go and what needs to grow. Holy Spirit, thank you for living in me and giving me new life. Help me to surrender today and to trust that you have the power to change and renew me. Amen.
Romans 8:1-11 ESV1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. 3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. 6 For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot. 8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. • • •1. Jesus exposes the difference between religious words and repentant obedience through the parable of the two sons, revealing that the Kingdom belongs to those who respond to God with changed lives, not just correct language.
Jesus curses the fruitless fig tree, revealing that outward appearances mean little without spiritual fruit. He teaches the disciples that faith-filled prayer has real power to move mountains. The Spirit invites us to examine what our lives are producing—and to trust God boldly for what seems impossible.
Jesus shows that true authority flows not from position or control, but from surrender to the Father. Life in the Spirit is not found by negotiating obedience or fearing people, but by living fully under God's authority. When we surrender, the Spirit brings freedom, peace, and clarity.

This is a live recorded message from Sunday service at City of Refuge South in Thomaston, GA. Thanks for listening. We pray it blesses you!
Life in the Spirit begins with how we welcome Jesus when He draws near. Obedience, surrender, and the cry of “Hosanna” are true postures of a heart that receives the King. When we open the door to Christ, He transforms what we could never change on our own.
Jesus wants to remove everything that distracts His people from communion with God. He clears out the noise so prayer, purity, and praise can take their rightful place. Life in the Spirit means allowing Christ to cleanse whatever in us crowds out a life of real intimacy and intercession.
On Sunday Pastor Jeff will launch a three-part sermon series looking at Christmas from a very different angle. If Jesus' birth marked the beginning of something new, that means it also marked the end of something old. To fully appreciate the beauty of the new, we first have to understand the old it was replacing and the vivid contrast between the two. Let's learn something important together!

Paul commands us to be filled with the Spirit. Paul doesn't say, “It would be a great thing to attain if you could. Try really hard.” No, he commands that we “be filled with the Spirit.” Let's ask this short text three questions: 1) what is being filled with the Spirit? 2) how do we know if we are filled with the Spirit? and 3) how can we become filled with the Spirit? This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on August 22, 2010. Series: The Holy Spirit. Scripture: Ephesians 5:15-21. Jesus redefines greatness through humility, showing that true honor in the kingdom comes not from position but from service. His life becomes the model of sacrificial love — the Son of Man who came not to be served but to serve. What if the greatest among us are those who quietly serve others first?

In this final episode of the series on the Fruit of the Spirit, Dan Holland wraps it all up with one powerful truth: the Spirit-filled life isn't about trying harder—it's about abiding deeper in Christ. From John 15 and Psalm 1, we're reminded that a life rooted in Jesus naturally produces the fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. The secret to lasting transformation isn't willpower; it's connection. When we stay planted in the Word of God, the Spirit does the growing.Discover how abiding in Jesus changes what “spills out” when life bumps you—and how the Holy Spirit produces fruit that lasts. If you are interested in starting a micro church or hosting a small group in your home with like-minded individuals, we've got you covered. 1 Corinthians 12:1-6
Walking in the Spirit is always about drawing nearer to Jesus and making his name greater than our own. Pastor Nathan Potter continues our series through Acts with sermon from Acts 8:14-25.
Romans 7:6 — What makes Christians different from others is that they have been granted a new mind and new desires by the Holy Spirit. This new life in Christ puts believers in a new relationship to the law of Moses as now the law is written upon the heart of every believer. This creates a heart of worship that is not focused on the externals of religious acts, but on the orientation of the heart. True worship flows out of a heart renewed and freed from the curse of the law and the power of sin and flesh. In this sermon on Romans 7:6 titled “Life in the Spirit,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones is emphatic that this new relationship to the law does not bring about antinomianism since all of God's commands are good and just. It means that Christ fulfilled the law and gives believers a new heart that has new desires. The end of the law is not a license to live in sin but it comes with the joy and privilege of seeking to love God and neighbor out of the new person that Christ Jesus is fashioning all believers to be. Sanctification cannot be separated from salvation and glorification because Christ Jesus is the one who begins and completes salvation.
