WHY COOK ON GAS GRIDDLE BBQ; HOW TO SEASON & MAINTAIN A GRIDDLE Grilling in the bbq world or using a smoker has been a long lasting tradition when it comes to the outdoors. If you haven't purchased a griddle to try, you might realize you are missing out. We jumped on the bandwagon of adding the outdoor propane griddle a few years back. As a result of the diversity, we now own two in different sizes. The first purchase was a 4 burner propane gas Pit Boss Griddle. We chose this one for the front grease cleanout location as where the griddle stays on our cabin deck, that is more accessible. The second purchase was a 17” propane gas Blackstone Griddle. After realizing how easy it was to cook all our meals on the larger version, we opted for a more compact one to take along camping, going to the lake or for picnics. CONS OF BBQING: Regardless if it is a Griddle, Grill or Smoker; we have learned the same issue applies and that is providing an area with minimal wind. Now there are “windshields” one can make or build, but we have had to watch the wind regardless when using any of these. NOTE: Do not use a griddle, grill or smoker inside of buildings. GRIDDLE SEASONING & MAINTENANCE Once purchasing a griddle, before use it is an ABSOLUTE MUST that one reads the manufacturer's booklet regarding the Preparation, Seasoning and Maintenance of the griddle to ensure the longevity of the cooking top but also so that food doesn't stick and tastes desirable. 5 Easy Steps To Season A Gas Griddle BBQ Rust Removal: New or Old moisture may collect on the cooking surface causing a patch of rust or a rough spot. Scrub away any rust or rough spots using a Scotch Brite pad. Clean Griddle: If the griddle is new from the factory, it may come with a thin oil coating. To clean us a small amount of mild dish soap in warm water to remove the factory coating. Proceed to also wipe off everything else after use with a clean damp cloth. Seasoning A Griddle: A griddle must be seasoned before use. First turn all burners on high heat, allowing for the griddle cooking surface to begin changing color. Using high smoke point cooking oil like flaxseed, drizzle it all over the surface. Careful it is HOT. Have ready a pair of tongs or heat-resistant gloves, take a lint-free cloth as the goal is to evenly wipe or coat the entire cooking surface including the tight corners as well as the outside of the griddle surface. Wait and Repeat 3x: This is a slow process, and needs to be repeated a minimum of three times. The oil will start to smoke with the burners being on High. Wait until you see that the smoke has stopped. Drizzle and wipe another coating of oil thoroughly. Repeat the process until there have been at least 3 applications. READ YOUR GRIDDLE SEASONING INSTRUCTIONS. Coat To Protect: Once the initial oil seasoning is complete, turn the burners off so that the surface may cool to where it is warm to the touch. Using a lint free cloth, begin wiping a sealing product such as BuzzyWaxx (beeswax). Bacon Up - Bacon Grease, or manufacturer's of griddles offer their own products. A thin coat is all that is needed, just make sure you reach all the corners. After completing these 5 simple steps, your griddle is ready for breakfast, lunch or dinner! So now start slinging some hash, becoming your own hibachi backyard grill or even try baking cookies - ENJOY! The party makes final preparations before leaving Drose, with Zechs giving Hoshino a Moonbeam scroll and aboard the Swift Hummingbird, Hoshino and Arguile craft powerful scrolls from the Arcanaloth spellbook, successfully creating several before stopping ahead. Meanwhile, Shanks strikes a deal with the ship's gunner, wagering on Hoshino's skill in exchange for a plastique recipe. Later, Shanks and Greyleaf discuss Greyleaf's transformation and past battles, reflecting on how his choices have shaped him. Their conversation turns to Rig, with Shanks asserting he no longer lives with regrets. Upon landing at the Barrier Range, the party gathers heavy cloaks for the snowy ascent. Zechs struggles with heightened senses due to Malar's influence, but the group supports him. At their destination, Galahad introduces himself as a descendant of “Those That Wandered,” leading to a tense but respectful meeting with the clan leader, Pakia. She recognizes his lineage and invites them to stay for the festival, where they revel in food, drink, and tales of the past. The festivities continue with exhibition matches featuring Arguile, Shanks, and Galahad. While the rogues maneuver strategically, Galahad faces the formidable General Tharia. Initially dominant, Galahad is nearly overcome but summons Khana's Fury to secure victory, earning mutual respect. The celebration escalates with drinking competitions, where Zechs unexpectedly outdrinks Galahad, much to everyone's delight. Shanks later checks in with Greyleaf, who agrees to relay a message to Rig on Shanks' behalf. Their conversation shifts to Glad's patron and the gods' manipulations, hinting at more profound struggles ahead. As the night ends, the group regroups in the morning to plan their next move. Galahad learns more about his ancestors from Pakia, discovering a historical divide caused by an Illithid incursion, leading to his lineage's journey across planes. With goodbyes exchanged, the party sets off toward Nymora, and Zechs shares his suspicions that other children, like him, may have been experimented on by Malar. He enlists Greyleaf's help dealing with Alma, someone linked to their past suffering, while the group urges him to avoid succumbing to vengeance. Before arriving in Nymora, the party detours to Yahnkoshi, where Hoshino finds his home ravaged by Eldertwine. He sees a gruesome sight and remnants of Attros' former guild. He collects a sample and returns to the ship, where the group entrusts it to Greyleaf's ally for study. Back on board, they sort their inventory and strategize new battle formations. Zechs and Shanks compare their bows, contemplating their weapons' more profound mysteries. Upon reaching Nymora, the group disperses for personal errands. Shanks and Greyleaf visit Potions and Lotions so Shanks and Rig can speak about things they wish they had said sooner, and Zechs reunites with his parents briefly to inform them that he and the party will be in town briefly, while the rest secure a single inn room. Their stay becomes luxurious thanks to Hoshino's Magnificent Mansion, offering much-needed respite. As they settle in, they prepare for their next challenge—extracting a god from their companion. There's so much happening, and we pick up with arc 24, “ Where You Come From”. Reference: https://www.womensranchbronc.com/ New York's Pheasant Stocking Program Faces Threat—What It Means for Bird Hunters According to the New York Times and Outdoor Life; New York's pheasant stocking program, which provides hunting opportunities by releasing pen-raised birds, is under threat by a proposed bill from Assembly member Linda B. Rosenthal. The program aims to give hunters the chance to chase pheasants, as wild bird populations have drastically declined due to habitat loss. Despite the argument that releasing these birds is "state-sponsored cruelty," the program is essential for maintaining hunting activities in the state. Without it, pheasant hunting in New York could cease to exist. Though critics argue that hunting pen-raised birds is too easy, the program provides a crucial starting point for new hunters and young people. It also serves as a gateway to fostering future wildlife advocates. However, opponents, including animal welfare groups, push for an end to the practice, claiming it's not in line with ethical hunting standards. The state's Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) states that the program is necessary for creating hunting opportunities, especially for beginners. If the bill passes, it could significantly reduce hunting participation in New York, affecting conservation efforts and funding for habitat restoration. If other states follow suit, it would be a setback for bird hunters nationwide. Colorado Wolf Debate: Ranchers' $582K in Damages According to Outdoor Life; Ranchers in Grand County, Colorado, are facing severe financial losses due to ongoing attacks by gray wolves, and they are now asking Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) for $582,000 in compensation. This request, submitted at the end of December, is well beyond the state's $350,000 Wolf Depredation Compensation Fund, which is intended to cover all claims for livestock losses caused by predators. If approved, the ranchers' claim would deplete the fund, leaving the state with no resources to cover future losses. The claim comes from just three ranchers, but it reflects the growing challenges faced by those living in rural areas where wolves were reintroduced under a voter-approved program. These ranchers say the damage extends far beyond the confirmed wolf kills. They are claiming compensation for missing livestock, cattle sent to market underweight, and lower conception rates in affected herds, which they attribute to stress caused by the constant threat of wolf attacks. The Copper Creek wolf pack, responsible for many of these incidents, was reintroduced by CPW, but the pack's presence has been devastating to local ranching operations. Despite multiple requests from ranchers to remove the wolves, CPW opted to relocate them. With these mounting pressures, ranchers are now calling on CPW to pause the wolf reintroduction program. This plea follows months of escalating wolf attacks and frustration with how CPW has managed the situation. Ranchers argue that the state has prioritized wolves over the livelihoods of local agricultural families, putting their businesses at risk. Tensions are high, and the state's wildlife commissioners were set to meet on January 8 to discuss whether to pause or continue the program. This decision could determine the future of wolf reintroduction in Colorado and whether ranchers will be forced to continue bearing the brunt of its consequences. Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt (Tigger & BEC) with The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Season 5, Episode 218 New Year Goals, Teddy Roosevelt Fitness, Outdoors News Reflecting on Past Years As we have now flipped the calendar to 2025, are putting away the decorations and getting back into a life schedule again. Take the time to jot down some of those memories made over the Holidays. Christmas through New Years creates laughs and cringe-worthy moments, the lesser as time goes by are almost always looked back on as laughs too later down the road. Here is one that BEC wanted to share... Favorite Holiday Memory - 20 years ago on Christmas morning, Mom (Lois Wanner) woke us all up to say there was a coyote down near the feedlot. She proved to us that Annie-Oakley still had what it takes! Grabbing her .243 lever-action from the living room game closet, first off astounding us all that her 'missing rifle' really wasn't missing; here Mom had it kept where only SHE KNEW to find it (hidden carefully behind all the board games)! Off to the porch she tramped in her pajamas, as we all watched out the windows. Leaning over the railing, she cracked one shot off… You can imagine as we ran out the door onto the porch to congratulate her, quick range-finding in the yardage to learn she had smoked that coyote at over 300 yards!! Now that's a Christmas morning none of us will ever forget… or she will let us forget either! News: Ice Fishing Fun & Dangerous MINNESOTA ICE FISHING This story takes us to Lake of the Woods in Minnesota as what happened there is a great reminder of what could happen here as many head to the ice for ice fishing! According to Valley News Live, About 50 people were rescued off Lake of the Woods on New Year's Day when a crack in the ice separated them from shore. The Lake of the Woods County Sheriff's Office first received a call around 2:30 pm on New Year's Day that a man went through the ice on his ATV, thankfully the man was able to get out without injuries. About half an hour later, another call came in with a report of 20-25 people stranded on the Northside of a pressure ridge that cracked open. The Long Point Resort began using their own boat to bring people across the open water, the sheriff's office and Minnesota DNR joined in on the rescue using airboats and UTVs to help. By the end, Lake of the Woods Sheriff's officials say the number was closer to 50 people rescued off the lake. More Than 100 Ice Fishermen Rescued in Minnesota This Winter In a press-release Beltrami County Sheriff Jason Riggs said “Most years, the ice would be thick enough by now for vehicles and wheelhouses, and we'd be seeing a steady procession of them moving north. But this year isn't ‘most years,' and the ice is changing constantly. It's absolutely vital that anyone who heads out checks the thickness frequently, pays close attention to the weather, and has a plan in case the worst happens and they wind up in the water.” Ice rescues continue to be a constant problem this winter, as ice remains very thin across much of North Dakota and Minnesota. President Teddy Roosevelt's Physical Fitness Test New Year, New You... Would you have the endurance to hike and ride a horse to pass this physical exam? Here is a history lesson that many outdoorsmen, women and adventurers may find of interest. Use this story to inspire you and raise the bar on your goals. On December 9, 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt signed, an Executive Order No. 989, headlined “Marine Corps Officers' Physical Fitness.” It directed each officer of the United States Marine Corps to undergo a physical examination and a series of tests every two years. The tests were simple. Officers would have to ride a horse 90 miles, “this distance to be covered in three days.” Officers ranked “in the grade of captain or lieutenant” were also required to walk 50 miles, with “actual marching time, including rests, twenty hours.” Seven hundred yards of this needed to be completed “on the double-time”—something like a slow jog. This test too could be spread across three days, allowing the soldiers sleep and recovery time. Order 989's rationale was spelled out bluntly: “In battle, time is essential and ground may have to be covered on the run; if these officers are not equal to the average physical strength of their companies the men will be held back, resulting in unnecessary loss of life and probably defeat.” Neither the Army nor the Navy, which each got their own respective executive orders with the same test, escaped Roosevelt's attention. “I have been unpleasantly struck,” President Teddy Roosevelt observed in a letter to Secretary of the Navy Truman Newberry, “by the lack of physical condition of some of the older officers, and even some of the younger officers.” Roosevelt worried that “urbanization was making us weaker”—that we were living in unhealthy cities, that we were toiling in offices rather than plowing the fields. By 1900, only 40 percent of the country worked in agriculture. The orders immediately kicked up complaints. As historical journal The Grog recounts, “Navy Surgeon James Gatewood complained that the endurance test would leave participants in a ‘depressed physical state.'” The Navy's surgeon general said it could put the lives of officers over 50 at risk. As if to carry the torch for his own initiative, on January 13, 1909, Roosevelt (then 51) and a small party of Naval officers set out for a horseback ride to Warrenton, Virginia, a distance of 49 miles each way. Following a 3:45 A.M. breakfast of steak and eggs, Roosevelt, on his own steed Roswell, set out into a day marked by freezing rain, eventually returning to the White House at 8:30 P.M., that's 16 hours and 45 minutes. Roosevelt declared the ride—yep, you guessed it—“Bully!” Compared to politicians of today, our 26th president, President Theodore Roosevelt, was like no other. An eastern high educated individual who traveled to the Badlands of North Dakota only to fall in love with the lifestyle there, learn to cowboy, have a 1,600 head plus cattle ranch and eventually became the leader of the Rough Riders that took San Juan Hill in Cuba during the Spanish American war. In many ways, it's no wonder this President wanted our military to be physically fit as he himself led a strenuous life too. BEC's goal for you all is to share the outdoors and western lifestyle with others. Take someone that has not hiked, fished, camped or been to a rodeo, rode a horse; share an activity you love with someone that has not done one of your favorites. Encourage others away from "urbanization" for a moment. If you are needing beginner ideas to start, almost every state has hikes planned for each season that fits that various times of the year. Encourage everyone to enjoy their "backyard" aka America the Beautiful! Episode 216 Details Be Prepared for Utility Outages 1. Test Emergency Equipment Regularly Ensure that your backup heating equipment, portable generators, or other devices are tested and in working order before an outage occurs. This includes checking the hoses used to hook up to propane heaters such as a portable Buddy Heater! 3. Check in With Neighbors & Report Outage Call or text neighbors to confirm the outage. Check if anyone, especially the elderly or vulnerable, needs assistance. A group report of the outage can prompt quicker action from utility providers. 4. Conserve Heat in Your Home To minimize heat loss: Close doors to unused rooms. Place towels under doors to block drafts. Keep curtains closed to retain indoor heat. How to Prevent Pipes From Freezing During a Power Outage Frozen pipes can burst, causing costly property damage. Here's how to protect your pipes: Insulate Your Pipes Ahead of Time Pipes running through unheated spaces, such as basements, garages, or external walls, are most at risk. Insulating them is the best long-term solution to prevent freezing. Short-Term Steps to Protect Pipes If pipes aren't insulated, take these actions during an outage: Open Cabinet Doors: Allow warm air to circulate around pipes under sinks. Let Water Trickle: Keep faucets slightly open to allow a slow, steady flow. Moving water is less likely to freeze. Well Water Users: Plan Ahead If you rely on a well, remember that you won't have running water without electricity. Store an emergency water supply for drinking and household use. Backup Power Source: Portable Generators Having a portable generator is a reliable way to power essential appliances during an outage. Here's what to consider: Fuel Supply: Stock enough fuel for several days. Proper Ventilation: Operate the generator outdoors to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Essential Devices: Use the generator to power heaters, refrigerators, or medical equipment. Important Safety Considerations During an Outage Medical Needs If you depend on electricity for medical devices, develop a backup plan with your healthcare provider. Ensure you have access to power sources or alternate locations. Carbon Monoxide Safety Generators, kerosene heaters, and other alternate heat sources must have proper ventilation to prevent carbon monoxide buildup. Always: Use generators outside. Install carbon monoxide detectors with battery backups. Never use grills, stoves, or ovens for indoor heating. Coloradans Vote Down a Big Cat Hunting Ban: A Win for Hunters & Conservationists Colorado voters rejected a proposed hunting ban on mountain lions, lynx, and bobcats in a significant win for hunters and conservationists. The measure, Prop 127, would have banned hunting and trapping of these animals and limited the state wildlife management experts' authority. The proposal was seen as a potential gateway to more hunting bans and a shift away from science-based wildlife management. The ban failed by a margin of over 55%, with 1.3 million "no" votes against 1.1 million "yes" votes. The opposition, including hunters and conservationists, argued that the decision should remain with Colorado Parks and Wildlife, not through public ballots. Wildlife professionals also expressed concern that the ban could set a troubling precedent for future wildlife management decisions. This vote follows the controversial 2020 approval of a gray wolf reintroduction, showing that Colorado voters are closely watching wildlife policy. Episode 208 Details From Pheasant to Deer hunting, learn the importance of Building Strong Relationships. Discover How To Build Strong Relationships with Landowners for Hunting Access with these Key Tips. Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt (Tigger & BEC) with The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! How To Build Strong Relationships with Landowners for Hunting Access Building a strong relationship with landowners is key to accessing private land for hunting. Many hunters face challenges finding new hunting spots, but with the right approach, securing access can be made easier. Establishing trust, showing respect, and maintaining open communication with landowners are vital steps in building long-term relationships. We (Tigger & BEC, Jeff Erhardt & Rebecca Wanner) are both landowners, hunters, and outdoorsmen that believe strongly in wildlife conservation can blend well with agriculture. Starting off on the "right foot" to build that positive relationship is the key! Key Tips for Success To Gain Hunting Access Research and Approach Landowners with Respect Before approaching a landowner, do your research. Understand their land and its boundaries. When meeting, be polite and respectful—first impressions are crucial. Avoid being overly pushy, as you're more likely to gain access if you approach them as a neighbor and fellow steward of the land. Show Appreciation for Their Property Demonstrating respect for the land is one of the most effective ways to gain and keep hunting access. Offer to help with property maintenance, such as repairing fences or inquiring how you might help. Small gestures go a long way in establishing trust and showing that you value the landowner's property. Offer to Share the Harvest When you do gain access, offering to share part of your game with the landowner is a great way to show appreciation. Whether it's a portion of your deer, elk, or pheasant, this thoughtful gesture can turn a one-time hunt into an ongoing opportunity. Maintain Open Communication Throughout the Season Set Clear Boundaries and Expectations Once you've gained permission, be clear about when and where you'll be hunting. Check in regularly with the landowner to ensure you are following their rules and respecting any changes they may have made. This builds trust and ensures both parties feel comfortable with the arrangement. Express Gratitude and Keep in Touch After the hunting season, send a thank-you note or a small token of appreciation to the landowner. Keeping in touch year-round, not just during hunting season, shows that you value the relationship beyond the hunting benefits. Why Strong Relationships with Landowners Matter Securing private land access provides unique hunting opportunities that aren't available on public lands. Private lands often have more diverse wildlife and fewer hunters, making for a more rewarding experience. Building strong relationships with landowners not only benefits hunters but also helps landowners maintain and protect their property. Additional Benefits of Developing Good Landowner Relations Long-term Hunting Opportunities: Establishing a good relationship can lead to repeated hunting access for years to come. Exclusive Hunting Rights: Some landowners may offer exclusive access to hunters they trust, giving you a prime hunting spot with less competition. Frequently Asked Questions About Hunting Access on Private Land Do Landowners Require a Fee for Hunting Access? Some landowners may request a small fee or require you to sign a liability waiver. Always discuss these terms upfront to avoid any confusion. What Should I Avoid When Approaching a Landowner? Avoid approaching landowners during busy times, such as harvest season. Be patient and polite, and avoid making demands or rushing the conversation. Conclusion: Build Positive Relationships for Future Hunting Success Building strong, positive relationships with landowners is essential for gaining and maintaining access to private hunting land. By showing respect, offering help, and expressing gratitude, you can develop lasting partnerships that benefit both you and the landowner. Taking these steps not only helps you find new hunting opportunities but also strengthens local land conservation efforts. Keeping that pack light, yet filling it with food that will keep energy up while not taking up space or adding weight can be a tricky feat. BEC dives into simple, basic tips to survive that first trip. The key is to begin planning now, weeks before you head out on that trip. It's always tempting to head online and purchase pre-packaged meals, and freeze-dried foods that claim to taste great, weigh almost nothing while the ratio of carbs or protein is needed for physical activity. The oversight comes when not having tried them first at home! Happy Stomach, Happy Trip Adding in miles of physical activity first off we know often causes the body not just to burn up calories fast, but also can accelerate the process of digesting food and the need for #2 quickly (yup, we're talking poop)!! Before being stuck on the trail with food that might be healthy but doesn't necessarily agree with your stomach right off the bat, you'll want to start adjusting your diet now and trying these tips BEC offers in this episode! Most Important Tip: Try ALL foods at home well before the Trip, Adventure or Hike! Saving Backpack Weight The pack gets heavy fast, and especially when needing to stay hydrated too. Think of food that can be consumed, the wrapping can be burned or easily packed out and keep your energy intact. Believe BEC, it is not as easy as it sounds yet it can BE EASY to do with a little preparation and DIY R&D (aka research & development). We're telling you, TRY everything you have before you pack your ride to head out to the backcountry. BEC was raised on a large ranch, has been a certified trail guide, packed in and elk hunted the backcountry. She is seasoned on what to know, but as one “never knows what's truly around the bend” believes strongly you can never over-prepare. Do not make planning a headache either, have fun and make it a family adventure so that even if loved ones cannot join on this adventure they will still feel as thou they are part of the excitement! Easy Dessert Tip: Oven or Dutch Oven Approved! Fun, Easy Soda Pop Desserts Desserts ANYONE can make… Have you seen Soda Pop desserts on TikTok? Using Soda Pop, and Forget the water. TikTok creators like @jordan_the_stallion8, have been testing out the trend. Instead Mixing a ¼ cup of Dr. Pepper soda pop to a boxed brownie mix and an egg, bake like usual and you've got Pop Brownies… Well BEC (Rebecca Wanner) hates to bust the bubble on this so-called “NEW TREND”! Our cabin master of the Dutch Oven, aka Tigger (Jeff Erhardt), has been using soda or pop in his cakes for years when cooking over the fire! Tigger makes amazing desserts by simply melting butter on the bottom of a hot Dutch oven, adding the dry cake mix and pouring over the top a can of soda or pop, covering with the lid, and setting on the hot embers or coals. Don't forget to add those hot embers/coals on top of the lid too!! Want a cobbler?? Toss in a can of your favorite canned fruit canned pie filling and BOOM – You have a Dutch Oven Cobbler! Tigger isn't the only one making delicious desserts using a can of soda pop. Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt (Tigger & BEC) with The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Episode 205 Details Relief Efforts Post-Hurricane Helene: Mountain Mules Deliver Aid & Beware: Customs Tax on Electronics in Mexico Hurricane Helene Relief Efforts: Mountain Mules Bring Hope to Appalachia In the wake of Hurricane Helene, a dedicated team of volunteers, including the Cajun Navy 2016 from Watson, Louisiana, and Mountain Mule Packer Ranch in Mount Ulla, North Carolina, is providing crucial aid to the mountains of Western North Carolina. Challenges in the Aftermath Hurricane Helene left many areas inaccessibly devastated, with washed-out roads and power outages complicating relief efforts. Helicopters and C-17 aircraft from FEMA have helped, but some communities remain unreachable except by mule. The Role of Mountain Mules The mules are invaluable for delivering essential supplies to remote mountain communities. Known for their ability to navigate challenging terrains, these "beasts of burden" mules are not only reliable but also carry a legacy of service. Community Requests for Assistance Despite limited communication, locals have been reaching out for help via social media, sharing their urgent needs. Requests for insulin and other medical supplies highlight the dire situations many families face. As there is no power either in these locations, locals are hiking to higher elevations in order to send assistance request messages. Collaborative Relief Efforts On-site in Montreat, North Carolina, the Mountain Mule Packer Ranch team coordinated with the Cajun Navy 2016, and are working tirelessly to deliver supplies to affected areas like Black Mountain, where flooding caused extensive damage. Heartwarming Stories of Hope These volunteers have made a significant impact, not just by delivering supplies but also by offering emotional support. One heartwarming incident involved helping a family whose home was lost, bringing them food, water, and even stuffed animals for their children. Continuing Support and Updates To facilitate ongoing relief, both the Mountain Mule Packer Ranch and Cajun Navy 2016 Facebook pages provide regular updates and ways to contribute including using the Venmo listed below. Their resilience along with the affected communities shines through as they band together to support one another in these trying times. Travelers with more than one device face a tax of up to 19% of the device's value, capped at $4,000. The rule, which has been in place for years, is now being enforced more strictly. Some speculate this is to prevent resale or increase tax revenue from the influx of visitors. Unlike in the U.S., where no such limit exists, Mexican customs can confiscate extra devices if the tax is not paid. Travelers are advised to familiarize themselves with customs rules, as they also limit items like cameras and tobacco. While making international travel plans, always know and understand the local rules and customs regulations. Understanding your state's squatter rights, learn why it is essential to know your property rights. We explore winter folklore theories, such as the Wooly Bear Caterpillar and Farmers Almanac, plus have gift ideas to order now! Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt (Tigger & BEC) with The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Episode 204 Details Understanding Property Rights: Protect Against Squatter Rights & Gift Ideas To Order Now How to Avoid Squatter Rights on Private Property What Are Squatter Rights? Squatter rights, often referred to as "adverse possession," allow individuals who occupy land without the owner's permission to potentially gain legal ownership after a certain period. Each state has different laws governing how and when squatter rights apply. States That Recognize Squatter Rights California: Under California law, a squatter can claim adverse possession if they possess the property openly, continuously, and without permission for five years. Texas: In Texas, squatters can gain rights after ten years of continuous, visible, and notorious possession. New York: New York allows squatters to claim adverse possession after ten years of uninterrupted possession. Florida: In Florida, a squatter must occupy the property for seven years and demonstrate "color of title" to claim adverse possession. Illinois: Illinois requires a squatter to possess the property for 20 years without permission. Federal Law Regarding Squatter Rights While squatter rights are primarily governed by state law, certain federal laws can play a role in property ownership disputes, especially concerning eviction procedures. The Homestead Act of 1862 allowed individuals to claim land under specific conditions, although this act is rarely invoked today. Federal law typically supports state regulations, which is why understanding your state's laws is critical. How to Avoid Squatter Rights on Your Property Here are some practical strategies to help you protect your property from squatters: 1. Regular Property Inspections Conduct regular inspections of your property, especially if it's vacant. Frequent visits can deter squatters and help you spot any unauthorized occupancy early. 2. Secure Your Property Invest in strong locks, security systems, and fencing. Make your property less accessible to prevent potential squatters from taking residence. 3. Maintain Your Property Keep your property well-maintained and visibly occupied. Overgrown lawns or dilapidated buildings can attract squatters. Regular maintenance can convey that the property is cared for and monitored. 4. Post No Trespassing Signs Clearly mark your property with "No Trespassing" signs. While this won't guarantee protection, it can serve as a legal deterrent and demonstrate that you do not consent to unauthorized entry. 5. Utilize Surveillance Cameras Installing surveillance cameras can deter squatters and provide evidence if you need to take legal action. Make sure the cameras are visible to enhance their deterrent effect. 6. Engage Neighbors Communicate with your neighbors about your property. They can help monitor it and notify you of any suspicious activity. 7. Quick Legal Action If you discover someone squatting on your property, take immediate legal action. Consult an attorney specializing in property law to understand your rights and options for eviction. Remember When: Mississippi Hunters Land HUGE Gator in Storm Looking back on adventurous hunts, do you remember this one? Reported about back in 2023 by Mississippi Clarion-Ledger: A Mississippi alligator hunter, Kyle Mallett of St. Martin, recently captured a 13-foot, 650-pound alligator amid a stormy night on his last hunt of the season. After a frustrating evening with no big catches and a thunderstorm forcing him off the water, Mallett returned to the Pascagoula River marsh with his hunting partner, Matthew Brooks of Biloxi. While clearing grass tangled in the boat's propeller, Mallett was startled when the massive alligator surfaced just three feet from his boat. The water was shallow and clear, allowing him to hook the alligator with a fishing rod. Despite the gator taking off and the challenge of heavy rain, Mallett, with help from his cousin Jarrod Davis and his team, eventually managed to secure and reel in the gator. After a 30-minute struggle to get the giant into the boat, they finally succeeded. The alligator weighed 650 pounds and measured 13 feet, 3 inches, making it one of the largest caught this year. Episode 201 Details Hunting Survival, Colorado Wolf Debate, & Global Travel Fee Hikes: Key Updates Latest News: Hunting, Outdoors, Travel & Western Living ALASKA: HUNTER SURVIVES BEAR ATTACK & GUNSHOT WOUND Tyler Johnson, a 32-year-old hunter from Sterling, Alaska, survived a brutal brown bear attack and a self-inflicted gunshot wound while hunting on the Kenai Peninsula. Johnson was hunting black bears with his father, Chris, a former US Federal Wildlife Service officer, when they accidentally startled a sleeping brown bear in the dense grass. The bear charged Tyler, who struggled to draw his sidearm before being knocked down. Despite sustaining severe injuries from the bear's claws and a gunshot wound to his leg, Tyler managed to fire seven rounds into the brown bear, eventually incapacitating the animal. His father, Chris, helped finish off the bear and immediately began treating Tyler's injuries which included an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound to Tyler's leg. Tyler Johnson always carries a trauma kit hunting that has QuikClot and a slingshot band which the men used on the gunshot wound. The two men worked quickly, applying a tourniquet and calling for help using a Garmin InReach. It took search and rescue over an hour to get to the hunters, Chris made his son tell him hunting stories in order to help keep him awake and mind off the pain. Tyler was airlifted to Alaska Medical Center, treated, and released the same evening. This incident marks the third bear attack in the U.S. this year. Essentials: Hunting & Hiking Trauma Kit Before hitting the trails during hunting season or out for a fall hike; carrying a trauma kit is absolutely necessary. The backcountry is treacherous, and must be taken seriously. First rule - Always notify someone of your hunting, hiking or camping plans, destination, and time expected to be gone. Second rule - Always fully understand how to use any of the items in your trauma kit. The field is for reaction, home is for learning, understanding and practice. The pack, introduced from Oregon, has been linked to the deaths of cattle and sheep in Grand County, Colorado. Despite repeated requests from ranchers for lethal removal, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) opted for relocation, stating that this decision does not set a precedent for future wolf-livestock conflicts. The relocation decision aims to balance the state's wolf restoration goals with the needs of affected ranchers. This action follows the denial of permits for lethal control, despite rising livestock losses. The Cattlemen's Association criticized CPW for prioritizing wolves over ranchers' rights, highlighting the significant impact of the wolves on local livestock. The agency's strategy faces scrutiny as it walks a fine line between wolf conservation and livestock protection, with the future location of the relocated wolves still uncertain. This fee, originally introduced in 2019, helps cover the environmental and infrastructure costs associated with international tourism, which brought in over $11 billion from March 2023 to March 2024. However, the Tourism Industry Aotearoa (TIA) criticizes the hike, warning it could hurt New Zealand's global competitiveness as tourists may choose more affordable destinations like Canada or the UK. In addition to the IVL, tourist visa fees will also rise on October 1, from $131USD to $211USD, potentially leading to longer processing times. Despite concerns, similar "tourist taxes" are common in around 60 destinations globally, such as Venice and Bhutan, and studies suggest these fees don't deter tourists. Episode 200 Details College Bass Fishing's Rise, Teen-Invented Wildlife AI Dashcam & Best Fall Foliage in New England Latest Outdoors & Travel News! SPORTS: RISE OF COLLEGE BASS FISHING College bass fishing has emerged as a significant pathway to professional angling, with top university programs like Bethel University in Tennessee setting the standard. The 2024 Bassmaster College Series, a key event in college fishing, has seen a surge in participation, highlighting the growing popularity of the sport. As college fishing remains a club sport, meaning it is not NCAA-recognized, it opens the doors for students to earn sponsorships and win prize money, making it an attractive option for aspiring professional anglers. Universities like Bethel have pioneered the sport, offering scholarships, full-time coaches, and extensive financial support, which have helped them dominate national rankings. As more schools follow suit, college bass fishing is becoming a significant recruiting tool, drawing in both male and female students from across the U.S. and even internationally. This rise in interest and investment is cementing college bass fishing's place as a key feeder system for professional bass fishing, shaping the future of the sport. The sport's expansion beyond the Southeastern U.S. and into new regions is further fueled by the involvement of Major League Fishing, broadening opportunities for students nationwide. TEENS INVENT THERMAL AI DASHCAM A group of all female high school students from STEM School Highlands Ranch in Denver has developed a groundbreaking AI-powered dashcam designed to prevent wildlife collisions on roads. Using a Flir thermal imager and an AI model, the device detects animals, particularly deer, on roadways before they are visible to drivers, providing crucial warnings that can prevent accidents. The project began as part of the 2024 Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest, driven by the students' desire to address the frequent and costly wildlife-vehicle collisions in Colorado. After exploring various solutions, young women chose thermal imaging for its effectiveness in low-light conditions, when most accidents occur. Their invention, currently in the final prototype phase, aims to alert drivers of potential collisions up to 500 feet ahead, significantly improving reaction times compared to traditional headlights. Despite not winning the national competition, the students remain committed to refining and testing their device. Their innovative approach has the potential to save lives and reduce the financial impact of wildlife collisions across the country. Bear Beware! Montana officials have euthanized a bear after it attacked a child at a campground. A new social media Instagram filter, "Selfie Control", helps tourists maintain safe distances from wildlife. Plus, wildfire updates and tips on the shelf life of sunscreen and insect repellent. Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt with The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Episode 198 Details Wildlife Safety: Bear Attack, Instagram Filter Plus Wildfire, Sunscreen & Insect Repellent Tips Bear Attacks Young Child In Tent At Private Campground Bear Beware In Montana & Other National Parks According to Outdoor Life, Officials in Montana tracked down and killed a black bear that attacked a three-year-old girl, on Sunday, August 11th, while she was sleeping in a tent at a private campground near Red Lodge. The attack occurred around 9:45 p.m. at Perry's RV Park and Campground, leading to the evacuation of the site. The bear was trapped and euthanized by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (MFWP) officials, who believe it was the same bear involved in the incident. The girl was taken to a hospital in Billings, but her condition remains undisclosed. MFWP's Facebook post noted that "unsecured attractants" like garbage and human food likely lured the bear into the campsite. The campground remains closed as officials continue to monitor the area for any other bears Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks emphasizes being “Bear Aware” when camping or recreating in bear country, especially at established campgrounds where large concentrations of people can attract opportunistic bears. In its guide to camping in bear country, MFWP points out that most conflicts between humans and black bears at campsites involve food-conditioned bears. In a statement, MFWP said, “A food-laden campsite can be a bear's death sentence. After trying scare tactics and multiple relocations, FWP wardens and biologists have to kill 10 to 12 bears each year when the animals, attracted by food, repeatedly raid campsites and put human safety at risk.” Reference: https://www.outdoorlife.com/survival/montana-black-bear-attacks-girl/ https://fwp.mt.gov/homepage/news/2024/aug/08132024_child-hospitalized-in-black-bear-attack-south-of-red-lodge https://fwp.mt.gov/binaries/content/assets/fwp/activities/bearproofcamping.pdf NEW Social Media Instagram Wildlife Filter: Safety First! Tourists and Wildlife Do Not Mix, Selfie Filter Provides Safety The Jackson Hole Travel & Tourism Board has launched the "Selfie Control" Instagram filter, designed to help tourists maintain safe distances from wildlife while taking photos. Preloaded with safe viewing distances for iconic species like bears, bison, and moose, the filter helps users determine if they are too close to the animals. If the animal appears larger on the screen than the icon, users are in the danger zone and should back up. This tool addresses the challenge of accurately estimating safe distances, as recommended by the National Park Service, which advises keeping at least 25 yards from wildlife and 100 yards from predators like bears. The filter aims to prevent dangerous encounters, especially with "tourons" who often disregard safety, leading to incidents such as bison-related injuries in Yellowstone. By making it easier to gauge safe distances, the filter is expected to enhance visitor safety and protect wildlife during the busy summer season. As of August 13, 2024, there are 77 large active wildfires that have burned over 2.3 million acres. More than 28,750 wildland firefighters are currently assigned to wildfires. Year to date, since January, over 29,500 wildfires have burned more than 5.2 million acres in the United States, compared to 1.3 million acres during the same time frame in 2023. This is about one million acres above the 10-year average number of acres burned. More than 25,600 wildfires have been caused by people, compared to about 3,700 ignited by lightning. As wildfires continue to threaten communities and natural landscapes, it's crucial that we all do our part to prevent new fires from starting. Remember, it only takes a single spark to start a wildfire, but together, we can prevent them. "Warming temperatures, drier conditions, and shifts in precipitation are contributing to an increase in the frequency of large wildfires and acres of land burned in the U.S. each year," according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. So far in Fire Year 2024, 14 Unma nned Aircraft System (UAS) incursions have been reported near wildfires in 10 states. Seven of these incursions have caused firefighting aircraft to be grounded while the unauthorized drone operator was located. Unauthorized drones have no communication with wildland firefighters and pilots working on the ground and in the air. Regardless of your motivation, flying a drone near a wildfire is putting someone else's life in danger. Always Know Before You Fly and keep drones away from wildfires. Key Safety Tips Stay Informed: Monitor local news and official sources for updates. Use apps and websites for real-time wildfire information. Prepare an Emergency Kit: Include essentials such as water, food, medications, and important documents. Follow Local Instructions: Adhere to evacuation routes and safety measures. Traveling During Wildfire Season: Avoid high-risk areas unless necessary. Wear protective clothing and a mask to reduce smoke inhalation. Meeting Location that all members of the party know to gather. Packing List for Safe Campfires in Dry Conditions Fire-Safe Gear Portable Fire Pit: Prevent fire from spreading. Fire Blanket: Quickly smother accidental flames. Fire Extinguisher: For emergencies. Fire Control Tools Shovel: For digging a fire pit and extinguishing the fire. Bucket: To fetch water for dousing the fire. Water Supply: At least 5 gallons dedicated to extinguishing the fire. Choosing a Site, Preparation & Management for a Camp Fire Select a site with no overhanging branches or flammable materials. Use established fire rings if available. Clear a 10-foot diameter around the pit. Dig a small pit and surround it with rocks. Keep the fire small and manageable. Never leave the fire unattended. Avoid burning trash or leaves. Allow the fire to burn down to ash. Pour water, stir the ashes, and pour more water until cold. Alternatively, cover the fire with dirt and check for hot spots. Check the area for stray embers or signs of heat. Ensure the fire is completely out before leaving. Always stay informed about local fire restrictions and weather conditions before lighting a campfire. For the latest updates, visit the National Interagency Fire Center's website. Synthetic repellents like DEET and picaridin have longer shelf lives compared to natural repellents with essential oils. Bug Spray with Essential Oils Bug sprays made with essential oils are effective for about a year. These natural repellents can degrade faster than synthetic ones. Checking Expiration Dispose of insect repellent after three years as it may lose efficacy over time. To check if bug spray has expired, look for changes in smell, color, or consistency, or test its effectiveness by applying it and monitoring for bites. Checking Expiration Dates Always check for an expiration date on the sunscreen bottle and discard any that have expired. If there is no expiration date, write the purchase date on the bottle and dispose of it after three years. Proper Storage Store sunscreen properly by keeping it out of hot weather and direct sunlight to maintain its effectiveness. If the sunscreen's color or texture changes, it's best to throw it out, according to the Mayo Clinic. Episode 196 Details Expert Tips for Hunters: Trail Camera Placement & Easy Grilled Chicken Optimal Trail Camera Placement: Hot Temperatures Trail cameras have become a staple for hunters, with some even leaving them up year-round. Whether you are a seasoned hunter or just getting started, proper trail camera placement is crucial, especially in hot temperatures. Our Bend Field Staffer, Travis Theel—Guide, Outfitter, and host of the YouTube Channel Buckstorm—shares his expert tips on where to place trail cameras during warmer months. Why Placement Matters: During fall and winter, deer and elk travel patterns differ significantly from those in the warmer months. Understanding these patterns is essential for successful game tracking. Key Tips for Hot Weather Trail Camera Placement: Near Water Sources: In hot weather, animals are drawn to water sources. Place your trail cameras near ponds, streams, and other water bodies to capture more wildlife activity. Shaded Areas: Animals seek out cooler, shaded areas during peak heat. Position cameras under tree canopies or shaded trails to increase your chances of capturing game. Food Sources: Identify where natural food sources are abundant. Animals often visit these areas early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler. Game Trails: Look for well-worn paths and trails used by animals. These trails often lead to water or food sources and are prime locations for camera placement. Preparing for Hunting Season: Gear Testing: Test your clothing and equipment at least 30 days before hunting season. Wear your gear during training sessions to ensure comfort and functionality. Physical Training: Train with your gear to adapt to the terrain. This helps prevent soreness and ensures you are prepared for the physical demands of hunting. Conclusion: Proper trail camera placement in hot temperatures can significantly improve your chances of tracking deer and elk. Remember to adjust camera locations as temperatures change. OUTDOORS & WESTERN LIFESTYLE NEWS HEADLINES Feral Hog Spread Invasive Plants Hawaii faces significant ecological challenges due to feral hogs, which are not only disrupting native ecosystems but also promoting the spread of invasive plants. Research from the University of Wisconsin-Madison shows that areas with higher densities of feral pigs have increased nonnative plant growth, as the pigs' rooting behavior disturbs the soil and favors fast-growing invasive species. This disruption is particularly problematic in Hawaii, whose ecosystems did not evolve with large ungulates like feral hogs. Consequently, the state's fragile ecosystem struggles to recover, making it uniquely vulnerable compared to mainland states. Despite efforts, managing the feral hog population remains difficult due to their high reproductive rates. Big-Game Mountain Lion Outfitter: Sentenced Prison Time and Fined According to Outdoor Life, Wade Lemon, a Utah big-game outfitter, was sentenced to two months in prison and fined $10,500 for orchestrating illegal "canned" mountain lion hunts on public lands in 2020 and 2021. Lemon's hunts involved mountain lions being treed and held in place until paying hunters arrived, violating the Lacey Act. His guide, Kacey Alan Yardley, received six months probation for his role in these hunts. This isn't Lemon's first legal issue; he has faced multiple accusations of illegal hunting practices, including a fraudulent scheme involving Donald Trump Jr. and a black bear in 2018. Lemon has been investigated numerous times for similar wildlife violations. The group returns to Salix's hermitage, where Aeron assesses the damage to the Swift Hummingbird, and they decide to rest for the evening. The next day, Hoshino, Zechs, and Shanks set out to retrieve a replacement crystal, meeting a manifestation of Sloane, who questions their intentions but ultimately grants them the crystal. Shanks, feeling like a liability due to his patron Arioch, is reassured by the group that they will face this challenge together. Arguile suggests speaking directly with Arioch, who offers to relinquish Shanks from his contract if the group can defeat him under specific conditions. The group decides to perform a ritual to sever Shanks's pact, during which Shanks reveals his guilt over causing a war between Elves and Goliaths. Despite the emotional toll, the ritual is successful, and the group moves forward with renewed resolve. After resting, the group prepares for their next steps. Zechs has a disturbing dream about a tiger, leaving him uneasy. The group visits Salix's childhood home, finding it ransacked, but uncovers a hidden library and a heartfelt letter from Salix's mother, which reveals her tragic fate. This discovery deeply affects Salix, and the group offers comfort. They then visit their friend Chico in Balazaar, where they share updates and receive support. Chico helps shed light on the Malar issue and reassures Hoshino. The group leaves with more food than needed and heads back to their ship, setting course for Drose. During their journey, they train and rest, but their respite is interrupted by an attacking airship filled with were-creatures empowered by Malar. A fierce battle ensues, with Zechs struggling against Malar's influence while the team fights to free their ship. Despite heavy resistance, they fend off the attackers and stabilize their ship. In the aftermath, Zechs is distraught and continues to battle Malar's presence within him. Hoshino offers comfort, but Zechs drinks himself back to sleep. Over the following days, Zechs isolates himself, feeling Malar's presence more intensely. Tension rises among the group as they try to make the most of their time on the ship. Shanks attempts to empathize with Zechs, but Zechs struggles to cope, leaving the group concerned about their future. Despite the low spirits, the team remains committed to supporting each other as they approach Drose, ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead. There's so much happening, and we pick up with arc 21, “The Lost City of Drose”. How will the rest of this story unfold? Find out next time on the Medusa's Cascade: Collateral Damage! Discover and learn camping hacks, tips and tricks to make the most of your outdoor adventures! From efficient packing and setting up camp to cooking meals in order to make the trip stress free while enjoying nature. Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt with The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Episode 191 Details Ultimate Guide to Camping Hacks and Tips Essential Tips for Camping Camping can be an exhilarating experience, but it also comes with its challenges. To ensure you have the best adventure possible, here are some invaluable camping hacks and tips that we have learned. This guide covers everything from packing efficiently to being ready for unexpected circumstances in the wild. Camping: Hacks, Tips & Tricks Packing the right way can make or break your camping trip. Here's how to pack and be prepared. Create a Camping Checklist: A Comprehensive list of essentials. Hack: Flashlights & Headlamps - Test batteries, then after trip remove batteries and use painters tape to tape batteries to the lights for next use to avoid corrosion. Ice: How to keep food cold is always an issue. Consider bringing at least two coolers. Cooler 1 is for frozen food items such as meats. Cooler 2 is for items accessed frequently. Hack: Freeze any prepared foods that can be frozen to act as additional "ice" to keep coolers cold longer while using less resources. First Aid Kit: Always pack a first aid kit. A Must - Add to the First Aid Kit medications for an upset stomach such as diarrhea. Cleaning Station: Plan to create a space for a water jug and soap to rinse off hands, dishes, etc. to improve food safety. Hack: The SureCan Utility Portable Water Station with Spigot is a GAME CHANGER and we highly recommend it. SureCan also offers an excellent SureCan fuel can that is designed for a no-mess filling of ATVs, UTVs, lawnmowers, boats and more. This product is not a sponsor of The Bend Show, and is a product we recommend. Tent Setup: Pack along an outdoor rug for a tent or camper and implement a No Shoe policy. Will keep both areas much cleaner. Hack: Have a plan on how to securely tie-down a tent. For example: use hand weights, paracord and have extra tent stakes as it does not take much wind to lift a tent. Hack: Create a comfortable sleeping area by using a fan that runs off the battery of your phone with an USB cord. DIY MRE Snack Packs: Make the daily snack packs at home. Using a gallon size ziploc bag, prepare so that you bring only what you will need for that day's activities to keep you going strong. Include foods that will not melt, have protein and can hydrate. Each person in your group should have their own MRE Snack Pack. Example of favorites: Fruit unsliced such as Apples, Oranges, protein bars, beef jerky, carrots, etc. Camping is a fantastic way to connect with nature and unwind. By following these camping hacks and tips, you can enhance your experience, ensuring it's safe, enjoyable, and memorable. Pack wisely, set up efficiently, cook smartly, and stay comfortable for an amazing camping adventure. Dreaming about ranch or farm life, and thinking that's your next big adventure? Or maybe you're considering diversifying into AgriTourism. Learn what to expect, pack, and be prepared for sharing in the rural life experience! Yes there are rules when invited to that backyard bash! Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt with The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Episode 190 Details What to Know and Wear for an Amazing Farm or Ranch Experience Essential Tips for an Engaging Farm or Ranch Visit As the demand for experience and adventure tourism rises, the global agritourism market is experiencing significant growth. Travelers increasingly seek meaningful engagement and self-discovery, making farms and ranches popular vacation destinations. This expansion is fueled by several factors: a growing tourism industry, the ease of instant bookings, farmers and ranchers diversifying their activities, a focus on rural development, and farms and ranches leveraging the unique features of their operations and locations. Understand Your Activity Level and Desired Involvement Rural life is inherently physical and varies with the seasons. Determine your preferred activity level and the type of involvement you seek from your farm or ranch experience. Each season brings its unique tasks and experiences: Spring: Involves crop planting, animal birthing (calving, foaling, lambing, kidding), and fence repairs. Summer: Focuses on haying, rotational grazing livestock, and harvesting crops. Fall: Continues with crop harvesting, livestock weaning, and seasonal round-ups. Year-Round: Farms and ranches are always bustling with activity, with different chores and events depending on the season. By understanding these seasonal activities, you can choose the best time to visit and match your interests and energy levels with the farm or ranch's ongoing operations. Dress for the Weather When visiting a farm or ranch, it's crucial to dress appropriately for the weather. Rural areas often experience significant temperature variations throughout the day. Mornings can be chilly, afternoons warm, and evenings cool. Check Local Weather: Always check the weather forecast for the area you're visiting. This will help you prepare and pack accordingly. Layering: Dressing in layers is essential. Start with a base layer, such as a lightweight shirt, add a warmer layer like a sweater, and have a jacket on hand for extra warmth. What to Wear Around Livestock on a Ranch or Farm? Interacting with livestock, especially horses and cattle, requires specific attire for safety and practicality. Long Pants: Wear durable long pants, preferably jeans, to protect your legs from scratches and bites. Light Long Sleeve Shirt: In summer, a light long sleeve shirt offers protection from the sun and insects. Closed-Toed Shoes: Never wear open-toed shoes around livestock. Boots with a heel are ideal, especially for horseback riding. Pair them with tall socks to prevent chafing. Gloves: Soft leather gloves are useful for a variety of tasks and provide protection for your hands. Long Hair: Hair can easily be caught in machinery or become irritating if blown in the face. Always have hair pulled back in a fixed position to avoid accidents such as being caught in farm machinery. Example: ponytail, braid, bun, etc. Protect Yourself from Sun, Bugs, and Wind Being outdoors exposes you to various elements, so it's essential to take precautions. Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen even on cloudy days to protect your skin from UV rays. Hat or Cap: A hat provides additional protection for your face and eyes. Sunglasses are also recommended. Bug Spray: Use insect repellent to ward off ticks and mosquitoes, which are more prevalent near livestock and tall grass. Wind Protection: Secure your hair with a ponytail or braid to prevent it from getting caught in farm machinery. A baseball cap or hat can also help manage wind and keep your hair in place. Final Travel Tips For Country Life Additional Considerations Comfort: Prioritize comfort in your clothing choices. You'll likely be moving around a lot, so wear clothes that allow for easy movement. Safety: Always think about safety first. Proper attire can prevent injuries and accidents. Practicality: Choose practical clothing that you don't mind getting dirty. Farm and ranch environments can be muddy and dusty. Travel Size Reader Glasses That Work Pack These Readers In Your Pocket ThinOptics Keychain Case & Readers: These rectangular light weight readers come in various magnifications and conveniently fit in you pocket. When folded into the case the glasses are the size of a key fob. BUY HERE on Amazon. DO NOT bring extra people if not listed on the invite. (Understand there are times when unexpected family may be visiting, etc. First analyze your situation, can these extras enjoy a day or evening being "Tourists" in your town or visiting sites nearby? If not, make sure you ask the host first before ever bringing additional guests. ALWAYS ask, "What can I bring?". Even when the answer is "no", always still bring a bag of chips or at least a gift for the host. Our "Go-To Host Gift" is a bottle of wine. Everyone has different "House Rules". Be respectful. If you notice that shoes are taken off at the door to use the bathroom, follow suit. Same goes, if in questions when going "in-doors", always take off your shoes! Drinks. Most gatherings in this day in age are BYOB, meaning Bring Your Own Beverage. If the party has drinks served, be respectful and drink what is offered regardless of the brand or preferences. An event is not cheap to host, so be respectful! Bottled Water or Red Solo Cups. Finish the bottled water before opening another, and if you're afraid of your bottle or cup being lost in the party - use a black marker and write your initials or name on it. This is a BIG start to being invited to future events and neighborhood BBQs! Have Fun! Add a Little Crunch to Your Diet with Cicadas: USA insect emergence offers a unique culinary experience. Will you try? THE WORLD OF CICADAS Insects have long been a part of traditional diets worldwide, with cicadas being one such edible insect. In this guide, we'll explore the fascinating world of cicadas, including their nutritional value, life cycle, and how to safely harvest, store, and prepare them for consumption. Cicadas belong to the superfamily Cicadidae and are known for their robust bodies, broad heads, transparent wings, and distinct compound eyes. With over 3,000 known species, cicadas are divided into annual and periodical cicadas. Periodical cicadas, like Brood XIX, spend most of their lives underground and emerge every 13 or 17 years in synchronized broods. Nutritional Value of Cicadas Cicadas are a valuable source of nutrition, containing high levels of protein and essential amino acids. Studies have shown that cicadas contain more protein than pork and eggs, with low levels of fat and elevated levels of healthy fats like polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), according to the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension. How To Find, Prepare and Store Cicadas Finding cicadas requires patience and observation. They are typically found in areas with abundant vegetation, and their emergence can be observed around and after sunset. Nymphs, teneral cicadas, and mature adults can all be found during different stages of their life cycle Before harvesting cicadas, it's crucial to consider safety measures to avoid contamination and ensure freshness. Cicadas can be stored in the freezer for up to a year, and they should be de-winged and blanched before cooking to remove any dirt or pathogens. Episode 184 Details UNDERSTANDING RATTLESNAKE BEHAVIOR & DANGER TO STAY SAFE Rattlesnakes exhibit various behaviors influenced by their habitat and surroundings. Learning about their habits can significantly reduce the risk of an encounter turning into a dangerous situation. Understanding snake behavior & habitat is crucial for staying safe. In recent years, it has been documented that not all rattlesnakes' tails rattles. This has been discovered in rattlesnakes in both South Dakota's Badlands and in California. Know your snakes before venturing outdoors! Immediate Actions In Case of a Bite In the event of a rattlesnake bite, swift action is vital. The best defense is to have a set of car keys and a designated driver on hand. Calling 911 for an ambulance or Life Flight while en route to the hospital is essential to minimize delays in treatment. Access to Antivenom & Treatment Protocol Antivenom, such as CROFAB, is available in various medical facilities across the region. Understanding the availability and administration of antivenom can significantly improve outcomes for snakebite victims. Knowing where antivenom is stocked and how to administer it can be life-saving. Hospitals can prepare the antivenom in advance, reducing treatment delays upon the victim's arrival. Arriving early gives you the best chance to snag the most desirable items before others do. Often, the best deals and unique finds are gone quickly, so aim to be one of the first shoppers there. Bring Cash: Most garage sales operate on a cash-only basis, so it's essential to bring enough cash with you. Carry small bills and change to make transactions easier. Start by politely asking if the seller is willing to lower the price, and be prepared to counteroffer. Keep in mind that sellers are usually looking to declutter and are often willing to haggle to make a sale. Bundling also is a GREAT way to get your bang for buck! Gather several items, then begin the negotiating, but always do so politely! Embrace the excitement of garage sale season by shopping with confidence and scoring great bargains! Arrive early to seize the best deals, bring cash for seamless transactions, and strategically plan your route for maximum efficiency. Shanks and Galahad seek out Fat Arguile to discuss a possible business venture. He gives the two an address and informs them to meet with the “Financier.” The group continues to enjoy the festivities, allowing the heavier news to follow the next day. There is a discussion about morality amongst the party, and that evening Galahad is met with an alternate version of Thiadikus in a dream. Zechs speaks to the group about what he saw in The Vineyard and gives a report back to Amina. The group sees themselves as majority stakeholders in the Chubby T's franchise, with logistics to be ironed out later. For now, the group departs towards Salix's hermitage. Days later, the group arrives, and before even getting the chance to settle in, the group realizes they're under attack, which is an ambush. We see The Constable's lieutenants in the forms of an Alternate Galahad, Shankise, Salix, and the Executioner. They are not alone; they're accompanied by members of Shanks' old crew, The Wolf Pack. A tense battle resulted in the group seeking a retreat in Salix's hermitage, trapped by a force cage. It's there that the group finds The Constable, Shankise, and Alma, the woman who kidnapped so many children in Nymora, the reason for so much of Zechs' and Kyver's pain, there standing alongside him. Upon meeting The Constable for the first time, Hoshino uses Dimension Door to flee the hermitage and narrowly escapes the pursuit of Shankise in a game of cat and mouse. Meanwhile, inside the hermitage, the conversation with The Constable, the party, and some uninvited guests creates tension that puts the entire group on edge. A lot is revealed, leaving a few party members at their breaking point. Eventually, the group is left there, and Hoshino returns, clearly shaken, and the group plans again. The group assesses the damage to the Swift Hummingbird and realizes it will require some assistance and a new crystal. Making their way back to Invenas, they first stop by Iggy, who they catch up with and give Arguile the gold from their bet. Back at the hermitage, we find Hoshino deep in a trance, reflecting upon a memory; it's a shocking revelation that brings to light how we find our bard removed from time. The Invenas group finally makes their way toward Aeron Stormrider and requests his help in the ship's repair. We end with a conversation between Shanks and Hoshino, where Arioch pushes Shanks to his limits and further plants the seeds of chaos in Shanks. There's so much happening, and we pick up with arc 20, “A Path Less Traveled ”. How will the rest of this story unfold? Find out next time on the Medusa's Cascade: Collateral Damage! Getting from one location to another. There are many reasons to make sure your vehicle always has a Road Map or Road Atlas. First reasons are simple, even though it seems there is cellphone or mobile phone service everywhere, in reality there is not. NEWS ILLEGAL EAGLE FEATHER TRAFFICKING UNVEILED FLATHEAD INDIAN RESERVATION, Mont. (KFYR) - Prosecutors say a Washington state man intends to plead guilty to helping kill some 3,600 birds, including eagles, and illegally selling their feathers. A judge issued an arrest warrant for a second suspect who failed to appear in court last month. Such feathers are highly prized among many Native American tribes for use in sacred ceremonies and during pow-wows. The defendants are accused of selling eagle parts on a black market that has been a long-running problem for U.S. wildlife officials. Illegal shootings are a leading cause of golden eagle deaths, according to a recent government study. Immature golden eagle feathers are especially valued among tribes, and a tail set from one of the birds can sell for several hundred dollars, according to details disclosed during a separate trafficking case in South Dakota last year in which a Montana man was sentenced to three years in prison. Prosecutors say Travis Branson and others killed the birds during a years-long “killing spree” on the Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana and elsewhere. Rental platforms such as Airbnb enforce stringent regulations prohibiting hidden camera use. Recently, two high school seniors signed letters of intent to join Winthrop University in North Carolina as cornhole players. These scholarships will cover half of their tuition costs. Both athletes are highly regarded, earning five-star ratings, and they represent the first students to commit to a college for cornhole. Variable Rate done RIGHT with SWAT MAPS: https://swatmaps.com/Kessler Ag Ventures: https://kesslerag.ca/FoA 398: The Evolution of Precision Agriculture with Cory Willness and Derek Massey of Croptimistic TechnologyThis is the first installment of a new series of the podcast called "Field Reports", where we will hear from the people who actually use and hopefully benefit from the innovations we so regularly discuss on the show. I've been thinking about this for a long time, because in this respect, the show has been very one-sided. We hear from the visionaries that are creating new ventures, technologies, programs, research and ideas. But we too rarely hear from those that try them, buy them, and have to make them work in practice and in the field. We've been doing this a little bit through the spotlight segments that have aired at the end of about one episode every month. Those are sort of customer testimonials from our quarterly presenting sponsors. I've really enjoyed these stories and the tried and true perspectives that come from them. So I'm going to make these short standalone episodes and a regular thing: sometimes with users of the technology from the sponsor, and sometimes not - just profiles of farmers and another users of agricultural innovations. In today's case, Tyler Kessler owns an independent agronomy consulting business in Southern Saskatchewan alongside his wife, Brooke Dorgan. The company provides a range of agronomic and precision agriculture services for farmers who want to optimize yield, improve soil health, and reduce your environmental impacts. They are also a service provider of SWAT MAPS, our presenting sponsor this quarter. Before incorporating the business in 2015, Tyler worked in ag retail for eight years and spent a couple of years with an ag chemical manufacturer. He says in those days he wasn't seeing a lot in precision ag that convinced him it was really adding a lot of value to farmers. But then he discovered SWAT MAPS.

FEATURE PLANNING TIPS TO WALT DISNEY WORLD THEME PARKS Prepare for the adventure of a lifetime at Disney World with these essential tips for success! Who would have thought in this day or age, that expensive family destinations like Walt Disney World or Walt Disney Land, Universal Studios too could quickly undo any joy there was to be had by not planning for the destinations as well. We're not talking about the stress of gathering the family, or the high prices that come with visiting these theme parks. We are talking about the overwhelming feeling of once arriving on property to only then learn, for example Disney has its own nomenclature, its own language. So much is the overwhelming factor over taking guests to these theme parks, visitors are taking classes on “Walt Disney World” prior to boarding a plane. The complicated system that Disney World functions upon has left many unprepared travelers with the let down feeling and regretting having done the trip, as learning the Disney lingo and landscape can almost feel monumental instead of “Magical”. Today we are tackling tips to survive Disney World located in Orlando, Florida. WHAT CONSISTS OF WALT DISNEY WORLD First thing to know about Walt Disney World is it is made up of four main parks, but then there are also the Disney Water Parks too. The four Walt Disney World Parks are Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom and Epcot. Disney World is not meant to be seen in ONE day. Instead, it is highly recommended to enjoy it over several days if time and money allows. This means visiting one Disney Park per day and even reserving a day in between for rest around the pool or some down time. If you have never traveled to Disney World and are going with a group that includes children, we suggest booking through a trusted travel agent and one that offers travel insurance or through Disney's booking agents and inquiring about their travel insurance. Reason being is that depending on your party size, age and the cost; peace of mind knowing that at the last minute your trip might be canceled or cut short, all the money is not lost. If booking thru Disney World or a travel agent, be sure to ask if there are any special offers, for example there are discounts for US military, and often the longer you stay the cheaper the daily passes and/or hotels may become. HOW TO EFFECTIVELY PLAN FOR DISNEY WORLD How to navigate Walt Disney World, the Magic Kingdom, effectively before your vacation can greatly enhance your experience? Here's how: Research Parks and Attractions: Get acquainted with the layout of Disney's parks and explore the array of attractions they offer. Explore the different themes and pinpoint the ones that capture your interest the most. Craft a Detailed Schedule: Strategize your itinerary by planning which parks you want to visit each day of your vacation. FUNDAMENTALS FOR THE OUTDOORS, SPORTS & HOBBIES Often those of us that are skilled in hunting, skiing or many other hobbies become overzealous in wanting to share our knowledge with hopeful new individuals to the activities. This especially holds true if for example you are a father wanting to show your son for the first time how to use a bow. Another great example, assisting in teaching a spouse. Frustrations can come quickly as often expectations are that another will learn quickly your often decades learned skill in the sport. What also comes into play is the accidental missing of not teaching the safety of each skill or activity too. It is highly recommended that for the very first lesson, consider hiring an outside professional or other known individual to walk through the basic fundamentals. Let that individual be set up for success where they can feel free to ask questions as basic as they might be and the intimidation will quickly ease. It's important to remember, your knowledge, though vast and experienced, did not happen overnight. It was acquired through years of practice, failure and learning what works for you… Which may not be what works for another. Fundamentals Are Key Strong Foundation Is A Must Safety First Make a GREAT first experience to guarantee a lifetime of enjoyment!
