Discombobulated

On this episode I talk a different feeling Thanksgiving this year, lay out my plan to hopefully produce better episodes by working on them more and putting them out less often, and I give a broad stroke definition of what I mean by "I'm discombobulated". It takes into consideration everything from cigarettes to tax brackets to our sun eventually boiling earth's oceans to the heat death of the universe; and it arrives at this feeling of 'WE'RE FUCKED!'. I'm hoping I can talk about more specific causes of being discombobulated now that I've laid out the general case. We shall see and I hope to be back soon, but more importantly I hope to put out better episodes. It's not fair to ask you all to listen to stuff I wouldn't listen to myself. Some of The White Stripes to open, is it chill if I sing songs, poorly, to open the show? I've done it to poor Johnny Cash twice now... This episode I talk about the oddly nice weather we've had, frolfing due to this cake icing of a warm week, the election, my efforts towards mindfulness this week, we play some more etymology game woowoo, and the topic this episode is a book called The Worm at The Core. This book prescribes the terror management theory to us as the way we are able to live with the fact that we will die. Cultural beliefs and your self esteem, based on your standing in those beliefs, help us find meaning in life and give us existential motivation. The ideas in this book also shed some light on our fears and even disgust of "the other" by expanding upon the idea of opposing cultural beliefs. The Worm at The Core adds new insights and experimental date to ideas crystalized by Ernest Becker. This was a great read that really had an impact on me. Election is in two days but at least we have "options", Poland abortion protests, authoritarianism in Belarus, some galimatias about the word of the day, and the topic this week is loneliness. I broke my own heart, think I got covid and had the house to myself for a blue moon Halloween, but those have all been multiplied by real quarantine. Not in a great place for this episode but trying to be honest. I'm also trying out an actual format here! Gonna shoot the shit to open, talk about what has me discombobulated, do a segment or two, and then close with a topic or theme. Let me know what you think and I will get better! We got six inches of snow in MN last Tuesday, I've kinda been slipping with my social distancing, UFC 254 congratulations to Khabib and I wish him the best in retirement, and Taxes... I talk about income tax brackets, some potential changes to them under Biden, how one's highest tax rate isn't the percentage of income paid in taxes and how taxes will be important in the fire + wake of covid. I'm sorry for the spots where it gets ramblly. I wanted to keep it all about tax brackets, but taxes is lofty and I'm getting anxious about the election coming up lol. Went to bed defeated by some demons and woke up fighting again, so I'm sorry if you don't like this one. I'm looking to feel better by changing my appearance again, this time with another tattoo, I researched the #EndSARS movement, I played the etymology game solo for the first time, and I ended things today with some painful quotes from Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Jean Paul Sartre. Sawyer here and gonna try some solo episodes. It hasn't worked out to be recording episodes of Discombobulated, but Avery said I can try some solo ones. I like recording and it helps me feel better about the world to discuss it. Not 100% on how I want to format these solo episodes so bear with me as I figure it out. This is longer than I anticipated lol... I've been thinking about time a lot lately, and that's the theme of this episode. Different time scales, fundamental building blocks, entropy death of the universe, life as a fight against physics and other aspects of time come up. Beyond time, I'm also fascinated with things that make it to "timeless". Some timeless works I discuss are La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Black Sabbath's album Paranoid, Jimi Hendrix and the works of Fyodor Dostoevsky.
