Dom is joined by his "Euphoria" co-podcaster Josh Markland to break down the return of the final season of FX's critically acclaimed show "Atlanta." Created by, executive produced and starring Donald Glover, the show follows Glover's Earn, a Princeton dropout, as he manages his cousin Al aka Paper Boi's (Brian Tyree Henry) up and coming rap career in Atlanta, Georgia, along with Al's friend and resident stoner Darius (LaKeith Stanfield) and Earn's baby mom Van (Zazie Beetz). The show has had a critically acclaimed tenure, winning Glover an Emmy for best actor for the first season and earning many other accolades along the way. This year saw the return of both the season's 3rd and fourth seasons, with the third season airing back in the spring and taking place primarily in Europe, while this new season returns the characters to Atlanta. The show manages a rather interesting tone, bouncing back and forth between too real and surreal, with all the different scenarios and characters that Earn and the gang interact with providing an interesting reflection into African American relations in this country, without really having a direct point or message that it's trying to say. Happy Wine Wednesday! Matt of The Communies fan account joins me this week to talk about one of my absolute favorite shows and fandoms of all time - Community! Our conversation is part of the podcast's Boozy Beginnings AKA pilot project series in which we discuss the pilot episode of various tv shows. Matt and I head over to Greendale and kick off our discussion with what drew us to Community, whether we we completed the series, and then the deep dive into the pilot. We start by talking about the pilot's introduction to two of the more memorable characters from the series - Craig Pelton and Greendale Community College. From there, we talk about our initial impressions of Jeff Winger and other memorable introductions to the study group members. We were both struck at how fully realized these characters clearly were from the very start. Y'all know I love a little lighthearted zodiac fun, so I asked Matt to identify his big three signs in the form of Community characters. Although we were both huge fans of the episode, there were a few minor things we might do differently. Related to that topic, I asked Matt to share what his version of Community would look like if he were in charge of a revival or reboot of the show. No discussion of Community would be complete without talking "Six Seasons and a Movie" - so of course I asked what his Community movie would look like. The main discussion closes with our thoughts on why you should keep watching, our favorite fandom moments, and we get a little less than wholesome with some fun Community-inspired thirst prompts. Matt graciously stuck around and discussed overall thoughts about the series in a spoiler segment following the main discussion. Thanks for listening! Friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a great time! Be sure to support the Communies account on Twitter. We have a lot of rappers on the show, but after talking with 50+, I've found that most artists are even more dynamic than their art. Today I sat down with Bobby Doc, who is pursuing a career in music in an attempts to change the game for those that come after him; and that's only one of his goals. Hiphop is competitive. At times it's detrimental to the artist, and at others, it's the reason they succeed. Regardless, I know we can all benefit from more support coming from those that are a bit further down the line. Bobby and I dive into how we can take notes from comedy and comedians in general, and as always on BopCast, we work our way around. Chuck Klosterman is a writer currently living in Portland. His great new book, The Nineties, is out now. We chat about Donald Glover stepping out topless, unusual music in the Equinox locker room, his orange-colored writer's cabin in the woods, CD long boxes, watching some track & field races with beer, we encourage Chuck to write a screenplay about Las Vegas sports betting, people never stop reading a book because its too short, music sounds too perfect now, what age people stop checking for new music, being interviewed by Rick Rubin for 4 hours, Taylor Swift is more calculated than most, his 90's obsession with postmodernism, he's been waiting to interview Axl Rose so long that he's kind of over it now, when did centrist pragmatism become such a bad thing?
Dragon on The Couch: The Dragon has begun watching the 3rd season of The Boys (Prime), a TV show about corporate run super heroes in modern day America. She really enjoys the season thus far and its commentary. She also went to the theatre to watch Thor: Love and Thunder (Theater), the latest Marvel film. She and Berto, who also watched it, agreed that it was enjoyable, but the previous Thor film was better. Berto on the Bed: Berto watched Empire State (Netflix), a film based on the actual robbery of the Empire Armored Car Company. He thought it had all the elements to be a great movie, but it turned out to be only fine and serviceable. Next, Berto watched Tuff Terf (Prime), an odd film that seemed to be a 1980's version of Rebel Without A Cause. He thought it would have been entertaining if it was shorter, but it had crazy tone shifts. Next, Berto watched Operation Mincemeat (Netflix), a British film about the WWII operation. He thought it was a bit too long, but was a good “dad” film. Finally, Berto finished season 2 of Atlanta (Hulu), Donald Glover's TV show. He thought the 2nd season was just as good and enjoyable as the first. In this week's deep dive we watched the 1985 Hong Kong action film Police Story, currently streaming on HBO Max.

Dragon on The Couch: The Dragon starts in Morbid Corner with Captive Audience: A Real American Horror Story (Hulu), a docuseries about Steven Stayner. She enjoyed it and liked the twists that happen throughout the series. Next, the Dragon watched A Hard Days Night (HBO), a mockumentary starring the Beatles. She loved it and felt it was good natured fun. Finally, the Dragon finished Stranger Things: Season 4 (Netflix), the latest season of the popular show. She thought the season was good and the ending was ok. Berto on the Bed: Berto watched The Bourne Identity (HBO), an action film about a super spy who lost his memory. He thought it was a good movie, but the action was very 2000's. Next, Berto went to Joe Bob corner and watched A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night (Shudder), an Iranian vampire film. He thought it was boring, hated it, and felt it was the definition of an “artsy fartsy” film. Next, Berto watched In The Mouth of Madness (Shudder), a John Carpenter horror film about a novelist who goes missing. He thought it was really good and enjoyed Sam Neill's performance. Next, he finished watching season 1 of Atlanta (Hulu), Donald Glover's comedy drama. Berto loved it and thought it was a genius show. Finally, Berto finished reading Starship Troopers (Novel), a military sci-fi novel. He really enjoyed it, and liked the world building that the novel created, but reminds everyone that it is nothing like the movie. This week's deep dive is the 2002 sci-fi film Equilibrium, currently streaming on HBO Max.

Our guest John Flynn tells all in his new memoir Baked!—and we give him credit for providing creative inspiration to a cultural institution that launched the careers of many of today's top comedic talents. Zazie Beetz and Marc were in three things together - Joker, the Netflix series Easy, and the new animated film The Bad Guys - but they're only now meeting each other for real. That makes for a good opportunity to interrogate their respective anxiety issues and compare their coping strategies. Zazie and Marc also talk about her German heritage, why she's not an LA person, and how she sees her work on Atlanta as being part of an overall reflection of Donald Glover's real life story.
