Is the U.S. government preparing to go to war with Iran? Leading up to talks set to happen towards the end of the week in Geneva, the Trump administration has also threatened Iran with war, saying the country has “10 to 15 days” as of February 20th to agree to a deal - putting Trump's one-sided deadline somewhere in the first week of March. In apparent preparation for military strikes, massive amounts of military equipment have been sent to the region, including dispatching the USS Gerald R Ford, the world's largest aircraft carrier, to the Arabian Sea near the Persian Gulf. At least 120 aircraft, including F-35 stealth strike fighters and F/A 18-E Super Hornets, have been sent to the region with the Ford, in addition to E-3 Sentry AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) used for command & control operations as well as surveillance. The Ford will be joining the USS Abraham Lincoln, which is already off the coast of Oman.As we come up on the 23rd anniversary of the 2003 US war on Iraq as well as the 15th anniversary of the US-led NATO invasion of Libya, we'll look back at what led up to them, the lessons learned from the anti-war movement of the period, and how we can stop the next war:Stand for self-determination and against imperialist aggressionThe primary responsibility of those in the US is to oppose their government's actionsDon't fall into the trap of tailing the Democrats, the graveyard of social movements.Support the show

A tight, historic cellar. Arched ceilings. Long corridors. Tiny shafts. We faced a design wall: to keep routes tenable, we needed twice the extraction that the building could carry. At that point, I've failed as an engineer - I've reached my limit and could not find a solution. Some time later, a solution appeared in my head from nowhere —what if the fan changed with the fire? Not in a crude on-off way, but by tracking temperature, exploiting density changes, and chasing constant mass flow instead of fixed volume. We unpack the moment this clicked, the fan physics behind it, and why hotter smoke can actually make extraction easier if you use the margin correctly. You'll hear how we oversized the fan, ran it at a lower frequency in ambient, then ramped as temperatures rose to keep kilograms per second steady. That adaptive control boosted cubic meters per second right when the layer needed support, eased plug-hole entrainment, and stabilised makeup air velocities. We walk through the thermodynamics, the electrical and pressure implications, and how these pieces form a practical control strategy for retrofits and new builds. To ground the idea, we share two paths to proof. First, CFD with user-defined control that reads gas temperature each time step and updates fan frequency with smoothed delays to prevent oscillations—capturing the real feedback loop between fire and system. Then, full-scale container burns with live control showed the same trends from 20 to over 500 degrees: falling duct pressures, lower fan power at heat, and the headroom to increase volumetric extraction without breaking limits. Thinking about it now, this idea is a part of many other concepts that I describe together. To show a way how we come from the simple framework—Smoke Control 1.0 (empirical, static), 2.0 (CFD-informed, still static), into a new smoke control 3.0 (adaptive, feedback-driven)—and explore how this thinking can reshape underground venues, car parks, tunnels, pressurisation, and natural ventilation. If you care about safer evacuation, smaller shafts, lower velocities, and systems that work with physics rather than against it, this story is for you. Subscribe, share with a colleague who designs smoke control, and leave a review with your toughest question so we can tackle it next.Reading material:- Can smoke control become smart?- Transient characteristic of the flow of heat and mass in a fire as the basis for an optimised solution for smoke exhaust- Smart Smoke Control as an Efficient Solution for Smoke Ventilation in Converted Cellars of Historic Buildings----The Fire Science Show is produced by the Fire Science Media in collaboration with OFR Consultants. Both the left and the right sides of the paradigm are launching initiatives to force humanity into a digital prisonscape as technocrach reigns supreme in a convenient world. Tyranny comes under the guise of convenience. The Biblically named Genesis Mission ensures total control of AI regulations are in the hands of the state, furthering Trump's commitment to ensure the government grows and no states can constitutionally opposed anything he does. These AI regulations come as $500 billion are invested in AI, the Big Beautiful Bill gives further billions and makes it so AI can completely control nuclear energy and weaponry, at the same time as AI militarism deals are signed with Saudi Arabia and Qatar and at the same time as Israel utilizes Palantir AI drones to indiscriminately attack people and decide who can or cannot eat rations. Speaking of Palantir who was tapped by Trump to create master database on all Americans, Peter Thiel and Alex Karp are working closely with Trump and Elon Musk to establish a massive hive mind system of surveillance. In fact, the feds are now putting facial recognition cameras all over highways throughout the United States to monitor people's travel habits. The goal is to decide if people traveling from point A to point B is suspicious and should be investigated. Similarly, everyone's social media posts are being monitored. This is clearly for the future social credit system. As Keir Starmer rolls out mandatory digital IDs alongside the EU which is launching their CBDC, Canada's Mark Carney told COP30 that he was AI data centers to pay carbon credits. This is getting incredibly dystopian. With the UN Pact For The Future being signed off on by 193 countries in September 2024, allowing the government to shut down bank accounts under emergency orders and force social credit score and food rations on people, none of this is a coincidence. How Polygon's Smart Moisture Control System Protected a Mass Timber Student Housing Project

Amid the rise of sustainable architecture, mass timber has become a powerful symbol of progress — a material that marries renewable design with modern efficiency. Yet, in the damp climate of Vancouver, BC, sustainability meets its match: moisture. Managing humidity levels in large-scale wood construction isn't just a matter of comfort; it's about protecting structural integrity, schedule, and long-term performance. For the University of the Fraser Valley's new student housing project, these challenges were amplified by the region's relentless rainfall and the building's unique E-shaped design, which trapped moisture in stubborn corners.Enter Polygon — and more specifically, Sean Smith, the company's Vancouver Branch Manager. Tasked by Clark Builders to safeguard the project, Smith and his team engineered a fully integrated moisture control system that turned real-time data into action. Over 50 sensors were installed across the site to monitor both ambient conditions and the internal moisture levels of the CLT (cross-laminated timber) floors. These sensors communicated directly with an intelligent network of desiccant dehumidifiers and heaters, automatically adjusting output to maintain optimal conditions. The result? A system that not only protected materials but also optimized energy use and streamlined workflow. Manual moisture checks were replaced by live dashboards, and project teams gained confidence backed by data, not guesswork. What could have been weeks of weather-induced delays turned into a masterclass in proactive environmental control. To understand how smart systems and strategic thinking kept this mass timber project on track — and why automation may be the future of construction moisture management — we turn to Sean Smith, Branch Manager at Polygon, who helped lead the charge on the University of the Fraser Valley's student housing project.

Aviation News Two bidders vie to be project manager of massive FAA US air traffic overhaul Two bids to become the prime integrator in the FAA's project to overhaul the air traffic control system have been received. Congress has approved $12.5 billion for the Brand New Air Traffic Control System (BNATCS), and the Agency has indicated that an additional $19 billion might be requested. The bids come from two DC Beltway companies: Peraton is a national security company owned by Veritas Capital and headquartered in Reston, Virginia. See the press release: Peraton Offers the FAA a Brand New Approach for Its Revolutionary ATC Modernization Initiative. Parsons Corporation is a technology provider in national security and global infrastructure markets. Headquartered in Chantilly, Virginia, Parsons confirmed it has bid with IBM. The FAA says it will make a selection by the end of October. FAA urges airlines to discourage passengers from taking bags during evacuations The FAA issued Safety Alert for Operators (SAFO 25003, PDF) titled “Addressing Risk Associated with Passenger Non-Compliance and Retention of Carry-On Baggage and Personal Items During Emergency Evacuations.” The SAFO “Serves to emphasize the operational and safety-critical importance of strict passenger compliance with crewmember instructions during emergency evacuations. Specifically, it addresses the adverse effects of passengers attempting to evacuate with carry-on items, which can significantly impede evacuation procedures and increase the potential for injury or fatality.” FAA Signals Easing of Oversight on Boeing Jets The FAA is expecting to restore Boeing's ability to conduct safety sign-offs on new 737 MAX jets. Final airworthiness certificates will continue to be issued by the regulator The FAA is also considering increasing Boeing's 737 MAX production cap from 38 to 42 planes per month. Engines for America's F-47 Sixth Gen Combat Aircraft Coming Together Faster Than Expected The F-47 is being developed as part of the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) Family of Systems. It's a stealthy air superiority aircraft that can directly engage adversaries on the ground and in the air. It will be able to fly itself as well as collaborate with and control wingman drones. The propulsion system being developed under the Next Generation Adaptive Propulsion (NGAP) program is a concept that offers two modes of operation, which can be dynamically adjusted in flight: high thrust and high speed, and lower thrust with reduced fuel burn. Adaptive cycle engines can modulate the bypass ratio and fan pressure using a third air stream and advanced variable geometry components. Both Pratt & Whitney and General Electric are developing NGAP engines. Airbus, Air France reject blame over AF447 crash, 16 years on Air France 447 crashed in the Atlantic in 2009. In a 2023 trial, the judge found acts of negligence by Airbus and Air France, but determined that, under French criminal law, these acts were insufficient to establish a definitive link to the loss of the A330. Both Airbus and Air France were cleared of corporate manslaughter. In an appeals hearing, the two companies pleaded not guilty. Air France and Airbus chief executives recognized the suffering of the families, but denied any criminal responsibility for the crash. Appeal hearings are expected to run until late November 2025. Sikorsky to Build 99 CH-53K King Stallions for the U.S. Marine Corps Sikorsky announced the award of a $10.8 billion contract from the U.S. Navy to build up to 99 CH-53K King Stallion helicopters for the U.S. Marine Corps over the next five years.

India's Air Defense After Operation Sindoor: Lessons and the Road Ahead

India's air defense has transformed from sparse radars in the 1960s to a multilayered network anchored by the Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS), linking radars, interceptors, and layered missile systems into a cohesive shield. Air Marshal Diptendu Choudhury underscores how decades of preparation, constant operational readiness, and the stress test of Operation Sindoor demonstrated the value of Army–Air Force integration and cost-effective counters to drones and missiles. He emphasizes that air defence is no longer just about protection—it is about extending reach into adversary airspace and enabling India's offensive air power to operate with confidence.Looking ahead, Choudhury warns that the deepening China–Pakistan partnership, the economics of interception, and production scalability will shape India's strategic calculus. He calls for IACCS to evolve into an Integrated Aerospace Command and Control System, expanding beyond airspace into near-space and space-based surveillance to achieve full-spectrum aerospace domain awareness. Building resilient, cyber-secure, and future-ready defences, he argues, is essential to preserving India's edge against threats ranging from drones to ballistic missiles. How can India balance cost-effective counters against drones with the need for high-end missile defenses? What does China–Pakistan military cooperation mean for India's future two-front strategy? How should India integrate space-based systems into its air defence to achieve true aerospace domain awareness?Episode ContributorsAir Marshal (Retd.) At the end of April, air traffic control radar surveillance and radio communication systems at Newark airport went dark for over a minute. A week and half later, radar went down again briefly. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has since cut down the number of flights in and out of Newark. But, how does our air traffic control system work? How do air traffic controllers keep track of all of the planes in the sky? And what happens when systems fail? Michael McCormick, a former air traffic control operations manager at the FAA, joins Host Flora Lichtman to dive into the science of air traffic control. Guest: Dr. Michael McCormick is a former vice president of the FAA's Air Traffic Organization,  and an associate professor and program coordinator of Air Traffic Management at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.Transcripts for the segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. Plus segments on corporate America abandoning DEI policies and Trump's pledge to turn DOGE loose to investigate the Pentagon. Also featuring Stef Zamorano and Mike Macrae. And a call from Joe Biden!
