Doh Athan - Our Voice

Myanmar nationals who have spent years in refugee camps in Thailand awaiting resettlement in the United States now face increased depression and other mental health issues since US President Donald Trump halted his country's refugee programs. This week's story is by a Doh Athan journalist.

အမေရိကန်သမ္မတဒေါ်နယ်ထရန့်က ဒုက္ခသည်ခေါ်ယူရေးအစီအစဉ်ကိုရပ်နားလိုက်ပြီးတဲ့နောက် ထိုင်းနိုင်ငံဒုက္ခသည်စခန်းတွေမှာ နှစ်အတော်ကြာနေထိုင်နေကြသူတွေဟာ စိတ်ကျရောဂါနဲ့အခြားစိတ်ပိုင်းဆိုင်ရာပြဿနာဖြစ်ပွားမှုတွေ ပိုမိုများပြားလာနေပါတယ်။ ဒီတစ်ပတ်ဆောင်းပါးကို ဒို့အသံသတင်းထောက်တစ်ဦးကရေးသားထားပါတယ်။

On May 12 the junta conducted an airstrike on a school in Oh Tein Twin village in Sagaing Region, killing more than 20 students and leaving the survivors, many of whom suffered severe injuries, to deal with lingering psychological and physical trauma. Since the March 28 earthquake in Myanmar, the junta has denied permission for damaged mosques in hard-hit areas to be repaired or rebuilt, and authorities have even indicated that some of the mosques will be permanently closed. This week's story is by Htet Aung.

Officials on the take have long been a scourge of the people of Myanmar. There's anecdotal evidence that since the coup, demands by police, soldiers and civil servants for bribes, tea money and kickbacks have become even more blatant. What follows provides a mere glimpse of a pervasive national problem, as Doh Athan explores the impact on corruption and graft on a few residents of Ayeyarwady Region, the vast rice-growing delta west of Yangon.

LGBT people face widespread discrimination in sexually conservative Myanmar but are playing important roles at many levels in the struggle to oust the regime. They include People's Defence Force commander, fashion designer in exile, woman trade union activist who was sexually abused in custody, and a community organiser, who speak of their experiences.

The arid plains of the Anyar region in central Myanmar are the country's Bamar heartland where fierce opposition to the 2021 coup has left vast areas under the control of resistance groups. The villagers' response to savage military raids finds expression in their daily lives in many ways, from singing as they plant crops to performances by song and dance groups that raise funds for the revolutionary cause.

A fear of food shortages has gripped at least one of the camps in Sagaing Region's Tamu Township that mainly houses Kuki, a group that lives on both sides of the northwestern border with India. Some Kuki complain about feeling forgotten and advocates say their plight deserves greater recognition.

More than a month after the devastating March 28 earthquake, exhausted relief workers in Mandalay and nearby areas continue to toil in difficult conditions that have left some of them traumatised. In Doh Athan this week we hear from relief workers who have been deeply affected by the death and suffering around them.

The Myanmar earthquake brought massive death and destruction. Two weeks later, the government's heavy press restrictions mean that the true extent is still unknown.
