While the Red Cross is known primarily for blood drives and disaster relief, some of its most important work keeps people out of the hospital. The Home Fires Campaign has installed more than 3 million smoke alarms in homes across the country, saving thousands of lives. Emergency and disaster preparedness campaigns help communities ready themselves for weather related disasters. And CPR and First Aid training are critical to providing care at the moment people in crisis need it.rnrnMike Parks has been leading the Northern Ohio Region since 2015, after he retired as Rear Admiral from the U.S Coast Guard. In his role, Parks oversees five American Red Cross Chapters covering 31 Northern Ohio counties, serving 5.3 million people. In addition, he is frequently called on to lead disaster relief efforts, deploying for weeks to Maui to respond to the Lahaina fires, and to North Carolina after the flash floods from Hurricane Helene.rnrnJoin us for the next forum in the City Club's Local Heroes series, as we hear about the organization keeping blood in the blood banks, and our communities and neighbors safe from disaster.

A tourist from Seattle was on a Maui beach when he decided it would be fun to throw a large rock at a seal in the water. When confronted, he shouted "I'm rich, I can pay the fines." A local man came to the seal's defense and took down the rock thrower. Luckily, there's video evidence of the whole thing.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
When Kelsey Gray tells people he grew up in Houston, they immediately think he's talking about the city in Texas. But he's actually referring to Houston, Alaska. Though he spent a lot of time outdoors as a kid, he didn't venture into the mountains until later. He started rock climbing when he was a student at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Around 2008, Gray serendipitously overheard a conversation about how Alaska needed a new rock climbing guidebook. He volunteered for the task. As part of his research for the first edition of the Alaska Rock Climbing Guide, Gray climbed more than 340 routes in one summer. He realized many of them were riddled with old, unsafe hardware and has since dedicated a lot of time and money to replacement. He's now published several guidebooks and books of poetry while climbing and developing routes around the world. We connected with Gray while he was in Thailand. Imagine a country of 50 million people with only 50 psychiatrists. This staggering treatment gap is the reality in Uganda, but Pavel Reppo is proving that specialized experts aren't the only ones who can provide life-changing care. As the Executive Director of Finemind and CEO of Matchbox Fund, Pavel brings a rare dual perspective to the conversation, bridging the worlds of grassroots mental health implementation and trust-based philanthropy. In this episode, we dive into how Finemind upskills primary health workers—such as midwives and nurses—to deliver evidence-based mental health support at the point of care. Pavel explains why true impact must be measured by functional recovery—like children returning to school or improved household food security—rather than just clinical depression scores. We also explore the Matchbox Fund's mission to rewrite the rules of funding by investing in overlooked local organizations and responding to outreach with dignity. This conversation offers a masterclass in ethical leadership, local ownership, and a radical definition of success: scale as the "reduction of the problem," not just the growth of an organization.Related Resources:High-Impact Growth episode featuring Vikram Patel - https://sites.dimagi.com/high-impact-growth-podcast/reimagining-mental-health High-Impact Growth episode featuring Kevin Starr - https://dimagi.com/podcast/funders-power-to-change-the-system/ Finemind - https://afinemind.org/about/Matchboxfund - https://matchboxfund.org/Sangath - https://www.sangath.in/ Spring Impact - https://www.springimpact.org/ A WHO-developed psychological intervention for people in communities affected by adversity - https://www.who.int/publications/i/item/9789241506816 Sign up to our newsletter, and stay informed of Dimagi's workWe are on social media - follow us for the latest from Dimagi: LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, YoutubeIf you enjoy this show, please leave us a 5-Star Review and share your favorite episodes with friends. In unserer 32.

In the 90s, Dave Hume was one of the Red River Gorge's original kid crushers. After climbing became a family hobby Dave Hume got obsessed—and left his own mark on the sport. In this episode, we talk about what it was like being one of the original Lode Bros, bringing 5.14 to the Red with his ascent of Thanatopsis in 1996, and the one time he beat Chris Sharma in a competition. He shares the story of how his dad and brother bolted the infamous Breakfast Burrito, one of the Red's most classic 5.10s, and the sense of discovery of finding new crags like Drive By and Bob Marley. Plus, we cover the early evolution of the Red from trad to sport climbing, reminisce about Miguel's before they sold pizza, and how Dave repeated Just Do It, the U.S.'s first 14c, in an insulting few tries. This idea was central to my conversation with Justin Starbird, CEO of The Aebli Group, in today's episode. Justin highlighted that the real “silver bullet” for a successful crowdfunding campaign is the strength of an engaged community.“From our experience, a lot of times that secret weapon…is the community that they have amassed around their mission,” Justin explained. He emphasized that mission-driven companies often have an edge because their stories resonate deeply with their supporters, creating a foundation for passionate engagement.Justin shared how his team works with companies to authentically communicate their vision and values in ways that connect with people. “It's really important to be able to tell a story that's compelling, that's authentic, that's true to who they are,” he said.Justin and his team recently worked with Organic Transit, a company bringing back its innovative solar-electric bicycle, the ELF. The company's founder, Rob Cotter, turned to crowdfunding after a challenging bankruptcy. With The Aebli Group's help, Organic Transit is now raising funds on Wefunder to scale its ELF 3.0—a modernized, Eco-friendly version of its original product. Justin noted that the campaign's success is rooted in the loyal community Organic Transit had already built, which helped them pre-sell over 800 vehicles and log 10 million miles.Through storytelling, community engagement, and a focus on authenticity, Justin and his team enable mission-driven companies to thrive. “At the end of the day, it's still the mission, the vision, the goal of the company, and their authenticity,” he said.By building campaigns that connect with communities, Justin and The Aebli Group are transforming crowdfunding into a powerful tool for both raising capital and creating meaningful change.tl;dr:Today's episode explores how mission-driven storytelling creates community engagement for crowdfunding success.Guest Justin Starbird shares insights on building authentic marketing campaigns that resonate with investors.Justin describes working with Organic Transit to revive its solar-electric bicycle, the ELF 3.0.The Aebli Group uses authenticity to help startups foster trust and build meaningful connections.Justin's superpower, authenticity, is key to creating campaigns that leave lasting impacts. How to Develop Authenticity As a SuperpowerJustin's superpower is authenticity. He described it as being unafraid to share hard truths with clients and always striving to leave things better than he found them. “What I try to do is…bring that authenticity to our clients in everything that we do,” he explained. Justin emphasized that authenticity fosters trust, builds communities, and ensures long-term success for businesses.Justin shared a personal analogy to explain his approach to authenticity. He recalled hiring a yard-cleaning service and finding a Coke can left in the brush after they finished. Though small, the oversight eroded his confidence in the team's attention to detail. That lesson shaped Justin's ethos at The Aebli Group: always go the extra mile. By doing the “small things” right, like addressing potential blind spots, his team ensures their campaigns resonate with clients and communities.Tips for Developing Authenticity as a Strength:Be Vulnerable: Acknowledge weaknesses and lean into them to foster genuine connections.Address Blind Spots: Identify potential risks or challenges and confront them openly.Focus on Community: Build trust by staying true to your values and mission.Always Go the Extra Mile: Pay attention to small details that demonstrate care and commitment.By following Justin's example and advice, you can make authenticity a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. Winner of the Studs and Ida Terkel Prize A groundbreaking look at how ordinary people are fighting back against their local and state governments to keep their communities safe, by an award-winning journalist Most Americans are likely to encounter the effects of government malfeasance or neglect close to home—from their governors, mayors, town councils, school boards, police, and prosecutors. In fact, deals shrouded in darkness are regularly made at the state and local levels, often the result of closed-door discussions between governments and industry without any scrutiny whatsoever from the public. Too often, as this groundbreaking new work of investigative reporting reveals, residents are intentionally kept on the outside, struggling to get information about significant issues affecting their communities—from car crashes and dirty drinking water, to failing safety gear—until the backroom deals are done and it's too late to challenge them. A work of riveting narrative nonfiction based on years of original reporting, Backroom Deals in Our Backyards: How Government Secrecy Harms Our Communities and the Local Heroes Fighting Back (The New Press, 2025) tells the story of five “accidental activists”—people from across the United States who started questioning why their local and state governments didn't protect them from issues facing their communities and why there was a frightening lack of transparency surrounding the way these issues were resolved. The secret deals, lies, and corruption they uncover shake their faith in government but move them to action. For readers of Chain of Title and Superman's Not Coming, Spivack's revealing take on a hidden dimension of American politics will outrage and educate anyone who cares about the forces shaping their own communities. Over the summer months, we at Movers & Shakers HQ ran a competition: the local group who acquired the most signatures towards the Parky Charter petition would get their own special episode. And here it is, with the superstars from the Bexhill and Battle area, who acquired a whopping 573 signatures! Three of them joined the Movers & Shakers in the pub, and we also speak to the TikTok poet whose viral video spurred the campaign on. But most importantly, this episode contains important instructions on what you – yes: you! – need to do next. Welcome BACK to Pennan, Scotland! The BIT Crew has the month off so we picked one of our MOST FAVORITESISTED episodes to replay for you. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we love hearing the sound of our own voices :-). We'll be back with new episodes starting in September! Pennan became famous in the 1980s for being used as one of the main locations for the film Local Hero. Film enthusiasts have come from all over the world to make a phone call in the red telephone box in the village. Lesser known, perhaps, is Pennan's Seagull Competition. Sources vary on the purpose, rules, and outcomes of the annual event. There is a whisper campaign that Dr. Who will be in attendance this year. In recent years, seagulls have become increasingly aggressive and have chased off the once-thriving mackerel (pronounced Mack-Ah-Rell) population to the more habitable coastal waters of Norway (home to Charlie Chaplin). If you hang out at the phone booth or one of Pennan's many golf courses, you may bump into local bachelor Jake (or is it Jack)? For 2 euro, you can take a selfie with him in the phone box. Please enjoy three of the Pennan Podcast Network's delightful podcasts. How's That Work?: Hosted by Marcie Bonnet and Seafarin' Sequoia. They think they have cracked the code to how the local telephones work without lines. Where's Nessie? Nessie believer/host Dean welcomes Nessie Hunter/skeptic Don to determine whether Nessie inhabits the local bodies of water. Where Are They (Those Fish)? Janine and Patty host the show. Something or someone is scaring Pennan's mackerel off, and they aren't returning. Janine has enlisted Patty to shepherd them back to Pennan if she has to swim in the sea to do so. Sponsors include The BBC, Sam's Seagulls, Jody (Dr. Who's Companion), Jake's Fantasy Dates, and George, the forgetful and perpetually lost garbage guy! In “Backroom Deals in Our Backyards: How Government Secrecy Harms Our Communities and the Local Heroes Fighting Back,” Miranda Spivack tells the stories of ordinary citizens who discovered that local and state governments they thought were there to protect them weren't doing their jobs. Instead, these “accidental activists” found not only a lack of transparency but also often resistance when searching for information about how to resolve community issues. Does their work provide a roadmap – and hope – for others? Spivack, author and former Washington Post editor and reporter, is this episode's guest on Equal Time. Learn more about your ad choices. This week, the Sun's square to Neptune asks, “Who are you, really?” And as the Sun conjoins Jupiter just in time for the Cancer New Moon, we learn something about traveling far to find our tribe and the wandering ways we might have to sacrifice in order to belong. And Mercury enters Leeeeoooo for a storytelling journey that involves the mentorship of Saturn, the imagination of Neptune, and the soul-bearing honesty of Pluto. And a listener question about the Part of Fortune. Plus: Phoning home, sitting at the supper table, and the stuff of legend. Read a full transcript of this episode. Have a question you'd like answered on the show? Email April or leave it here! Subscribe to April's mailing list and get a free lunar workbook at each New Moon! Love the show? Make a donation! Timestamps [1:32] The Sun squares Neptune (June 23, 1:29 AM PDT) at 2°08' Cancer-Aries. The Sun in connection with Neptune, often suggests a crisis of confidence when we ask, “Who am I? What do I want?” [3:14] The Sun conjoins Jupiter (June 24, 8:17 AM PDT) at 3º21' Cancer. Yearning for a big, bold adventure that gives us a chance to be part of a community. The film Local Hero was mentioned. [4:59] Moon Report! The Cancer New Moon is on June 25 (3:31 AM PDT) at 04º07' Cancer, on the symbol 5 Cancer, An automobile is wrecked by a train. How much of your individuality are you prepared to set aside so that you can sit comfortably at the supper table? [7:06] Lunar Phase Family Cycle (LPFC). This is the New Moon in a lunar phase family cycle that begins a story related to family, home and belonging. The First Quarter Moon (action point) in this cycle is on March 25, 2026, 05º08' Cancer. On Dec. 23, 2026, the Full Moon (awareness point) of this LPFC is at 2°13' Cancer, and the Last Quarter Moon (final action point) is on Sep. 23, 2027 at 00º10' Cancer. [8:38] Void-of-Course (VOC) Moon periods. On June 23 (1:26 AM PDT), the Moon in Gemini squares Mars in Virgo. It is VOC for a staggering 43 hours and 18 minutes (!!!), before it enters Cancer (June 24, 8:44 PM PDT). Sometimes we have to get good and angry, or excited, about something before we will act. [9:53] On June 26 (10:16 PM PDT), the Moon in Cancer sextiles Uranus in Taurus. It's VOC for 49 minutes, then enters Leo (11:05 PM PDT). Transform emotions, worries, and stresses into energy and motivation. [11:23] On June 29 (4:03 AM PDT), the Moon in Leo squares Uranus in Taurus. It's VOC for 40 minutes, then enters Virgo (4:43 AM PDT). If you find yourself in a sticky situation, make an effort to go with the flow, practice forgiveness, and make forgiveness a habit. [12:13] Mercury sextiles Uranus (June 26, 2:45 AM PDT), at 29º28' Cancer-Taurus. Here's an opportunity to change perspective and tell a different story. Mercury is on the Sabian symbol 30 Cancer, A Daughter of the American Revolution; Uranus is on 30 Taurus, A peacock parading on an ancient lawn. [14:46] The Sun sextiles Mars (June 26, 7:11 AM PDT) at 5º13' Cancer-Virgo. Sun+Mars = energy, focus, and competition, but sometimes anger as well. On the plus side, it's an aspect of creative inspiration. [16:03] On June 26 (12:08 PM PDT), Mercury enters Leeeeeooooo where it will stay until Sep. 2 – a long stay, because it will retrograde in Leo (July 17-Aug 11.) Mercury in Leo tells of our individual heroic journey. How are you the star of your own story? [17:47] On June 27 (8:52 PM PDT), Mercury trines Saturn at 1º44' Leo-Aries. The hero is trained by a master who strips away any hubris and sentiment. [18:33] Mercury trines Neptune (June 28, 4:58 AM PDT) at 2º09' Leo-Aries. There is a fine line between being imaginative and being untruthful. Make sure that you're walking the right side of that line. [19:23] Mercury opposes Pluto (June 29, 12:57 AM PDT) at 3º10' Leo-Aquarius. Sometimes when we tell our story, others might not take it well. Don't let your message be stifled, but remember to listen, too. [20:44] Listener Joanie asks about the Part of Fortune (PoF) in the houses. [24:26] The PoF in the 1st house.
