Lamenting turns us to God when sorrow would turn us from God.
Main Point: The world has many reasons to lament, so steady your soul by resting in God.Outline: 3 Unsettling Traits of Our Day1. Corruption (3:16–22)2. Oppression (4:1–3)3. Envy (4:4–6)

Sermon preached by Fr Ben Sternke at The Table's worship service on September 14, 2025 (14th Sunday after Pentecost)
This Sunday, we discovered that when in doubt, we need to trade venting for lamenting. Venting only releases steam, but lament takes our pain vertical to God. Think of it as the difference between yelling at a wall and speaking to a Father—one just echoes back, the other listens and responds. What stands out in Habakkuk's story is that lament doesn't deny reality—it wrestles with it in God's presence. Habakkuk names violence, injustice, and unanswered prayer, but he refuses to walk away. He stations himself on the wall, waiting for God's word (Habakkuk 2:1). That's where faith grows: in the silence that feels like nothing is happening, God is shaping us into people who live not by sight but by faith. This week, don't stop at venting—bring your raw honesty to the One who can carry it.

I viewed the opening displays of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum in New York City with curiosity but kept my emotions in check. That changed when we entered the inner exhibit, which the curators have wisely closed off from children and those wanting to shield themselves from the more heartrending images. As I encountered story after story of heartbreak and loss, waves of lament rose within me. When we witness or remember such destruction and pain, we can join the cries of those who have voiced their distress to God. This includes the words of anguish found in Lamentations, which many scholars believe the prophet Jeremiah wrote after the destruction of Jerusalem. In the tightly formed structure of this poem, he releases his sorrow and grief over the pain of God’s people: “See, Lord, how distressed I am! I am in torment within, and in my heart I am disturbed” (Lamentations 1:20). And yet he looks to God as the ultimate judge, knowing that only He can deal with the sins and destruction: “Let all their wickedness come before you” (v. 22). This kind of honest crying out to God can help us to grapple with painful atrocities such as what happened on September 11, 2001, or other current-day evil deeds. We look to God for help, hope, comfort, and justice.

In the latest edition of the NdB Sunday Show, Chris Steyn talks to Renaldo Gouws, former parliamentarian, industrial psychologist and podcaster. Joining the chorus of outrage over President Cyril Ramaphosa going to Zimbabwe and praising their Land Reform programme, he says: “…there's one president that deserves to be kicked out as soon as possible, that would be Squirrel RamaMampoer”. Lamenting the assassination of insolvency lawyer Bouwer van Niekerk, he says: “…it's just reached a point where these individuals need to almost wear bulletproof vests to protect themselves. But once again, because of the syndicates that we have, because of the government that we have, crime thrives, criminals are protected, and the people that want to blow the lid on corruption are ultimately the ones that are executed because that is what happened.” Gouws dissects the race scandal at Stellenbosch Municipality where the HR manager was recorded making a case for the exclusion of white men. Meanwhile, he is not surprised that US President Donald Trump has declined an invitation to the upcoming G20 Summit in South Africa. “There's just been this constant attack from South Africa towards the United States. And ultimately, we are dealing with somebody that is far more powerful than us. And look, I understand that if we stood on principle, then that could be a valid reason. But what principle are we standing on?” Gouws also has something to say about the attacks on independent podcasters and alternative media

Sometimes our souls have nothing left but lament and sorrow. Theres a place for such prayer. In fact, the Lord welcomes it.
This psalm provides a powerful example of honest lament, demonstrating how expressing our pain and frustration to God can lead us to a place of trust in His mercy and faithfulness, and even to joy, in the midst of suffering.
Reflection on Faith and God's Work Expressing gratitude for the work of God and its help during sad times. Referencing Psalms 119, verse 121, and Psalm 46:1 about God helping in times of trouble. Emphasizing the importance of listening to God over the devil, who can "beat you down" and "wreck your life." The fleeting nature of life and the importance of obeying God. Life is described as "even a vapor" that appears for a short time and then vanishes. Expressing gratitude for obeying God and having God live within one's heart. "I'm so glad tonight. I obeyed God. I'm glad God lives within my heart." The importance of going to the house of God and loving God. Acknowledging that people may have money and wealth but still need God. Expressing a desire for people to return to church and for God to work in churches. "We need to let God work in our churches." The importance of old-fashioned worship and not compromising on the Word of God. Expressing a belief in the "old timey way" and the need for people to praise God without shame. Criticizing compromise in the world and the need to study the Bible and know what the Lord said. "We don't need to compromise. That's what's wrong with the Word today." Trusting in God during storms and being ready to go home to Him. Recounting a personal experience of seeking God's protection during a storm. Expressing readiness to go home to God and acknowledging the worth of being saved. The love of God and the blessings He provides. Expressing gratitude for the many blessings and the love of God. Highlighting God's guidance, help, and forgiveness of sins. "The love of God. Oh, what it is. We can't imagine how much God loves us." The need to let God work in hearts and not hinder His blessings. Encouraging listeners to let God work in their hearts and lives. Warning against actions that could knock one out of the nation, blind, or hinder them. "It's time to let God work in our hearts a lot of times. We all get it." Feeling of inadequacy and reliance on God's purpose. Sharing a feeling that their ministry might be over and apologizing to God. Acknowledging the devil's work and the need for the Lord. "I said God I feel like my ministry is over with You see how the devil works me." Recognizing dependence on God and His saving grace. Acknowledging inability to save anyone and expressing gratitude for God's continued presence. Emphasizing the importance of letting God work in one's heart and life. "We'd be lost without God. We'd be all sinners in the hell. But thank God, God still stands on us."

A fear of food shortages has gripped at least one of the camps in Sagaing Region's Tamu Township that mainly houses Kuki, a group that lives on both sides of the northwestern border with India. Some Kuki complain about feeling forgotten and advocates say their plight deserves greater recognition.
As we finish chapter 1 of Ruth, Pastor Sean dives into three major themes... 1. God's providence 2. The Lamenting of Naomi 3. The Loyalty of Ruth. As we look at Ruth, we need to be reminded of our God. What we know about God will determine how we see Him in our circumstances both good and bad, and our beliefs are revealed during times of testing, tragedy, and trials. What does God have to say about Himself in His word? He doesn't change... do you know Him through His word? Do you trust Him?
On this Memorial Weekend we remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice on the field of battle, and it has grown to including all who have died in uniform. This day was started in 1868 and called Decoration Day. On May 30th of each year communities would decorate the graves of those who died in the Civil War. That evolved to the fallen in all of our nation’s conflicts. 1971 is when Memorial Day became a federal holiday observed the last Monday of May. A day of this kind of remembrance is what the psalms would call a day of lament. As we are doing a series in the Psalms, let’s look at a psalm of national lament, Psalm 79.
As we continue our conversation from the previous episode, Josh and Nicole Kingsbury open up about how they've walked through grief as a couple after the loss of their daughter, Amber, to suicide in 2021. They share the early commitment they made to protect their marriage amidst the pain and the ways they've learned to communicate through their differing grief styles. We also discuss the "before and after" of child loss, hear some of their favorite scriptures, talk about the importance of lament in the grief journey, and hear how doing ministry together has been a big part of their healing process. Grant's feeling a bit more hopeful about the 2025 season lately, while Lee talks about having reasonable hope compared to blind hope. Nevertheless the vibes coming out of spring ball have been pretty good, particularly surrounding the WRs. Grant says it's reasonable to be excited about many parts of the roster, but there are 3-4 position groups with serious questions (2:05). We watched practice video of pass catchers taking on DBs in 1-on-1s and we've got a lot of thoughts. Probably the most we've talked about the tight ends in a long time (18:20). We also got 1-on-1s of the O-Line taking on the D-Line. Several practice thoughts commence. It seems reasonable to expect David Stone to make a jump based on the evidence on hand (37:35). It appears Lee's conspiracy theory about Gentry Williams was wrong (50:05). Brent Venables appeared with Josh Pate in a recent interview. Lee has many thoughts-- most of them negative, but we did learn at least a couple of things (53:40). Trae Young is now the assistant GM for men's basketball, but what does that mean? Rants about players transferring all the time (1:10:20). This week, I'm joined by Trillia Newbell for a meaningful conversation on the importance of community, celebrating differences, and how intentional family time can shape our kids' understanding of love, faith, and culture. Here's what you'll hear in today's episode:Intentional time spent around the table fosters communication, connection, and love within families. Food, stories, and shared experiences are great ways to introduce kids to different cultures and traditions. Parents can have meaningful, scripture-based conversations with their kids about diversity and celebrating differences. God's Word is central to helping kids understand and appreciate the beauty in how He made each of us. Trillia Newbell is a speaker, writer, and author of multiple books, including Celebrating Around the Table. She is passionate about faith, family, and fostering meaningful conversations about race, culture, and community through a biblical lens.
