Danny Fenster's release came only days after he was sentenced to 11 years for incitement and violating immigration laws.

On Friday, we considered the possible need for new tactics for the U.S. to secure the release of Michigan-born journalist Danny Fenster from his imprisonment in Myanmar since May. He had just been sentenced to 11 years of hard labor on alleged charges that included violating immigration law and encouraging dissent against the military. He also faced newly raised charges of sedition and terrorism, which can carry life sentences in Myanmar under its current military regime. Just three days later, seemingly suddenly, Fenster was finally freed today. “There started to be some rumors circulating a couple of hours before he was actually released,” said Andrew Nachemson, a friend and colleague of Fenster's at Frontier Myanmar who is currently based in Thailand. Former diplomat and past governor of New Mexico Bill Richardson was in Myanmar last week for face-to-face meetings with the regime's Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, on a mission to talk about COVID. He negotiated Fenster's release. On the morning of Monday, May 24th, the Myanmar government detained a U.S. journalist before he boarded an international flight. Danny Fenster, the managing editor of the independent news outlet Frontier Myanmar, has been held captive there since that time.Fenster's childhood friend Jordan Acker recounts how the arrest sent shockwaves through the small city where they grew up: Huntington Woods, a roughly 1.5 square mile suburb of Detroit, Michigan."There's always a feeling of hopelessness when this happens, that there's not a lot that you can do in these sorts of situations," Acker recounted, detailing the community's efforts to create a "Free Fenster" logo, draw attention to his plight, and lobby local and federal officials to advocate for his release.An attorney with experience in the House Judiciary Committee, Department of Homeland Security, and the Michigan Board of Regents, Acker describes how Fenster told the stories of the persecuted before being targeted by the Myanmar regime. Desde Miami nos atendió la periodista de The Associated Press, Adriana Gómez Licón, con quien conversamos acerca de los padres que deciden enviar a sus hijos solos a través de la frontera: “Existe en EE.UU una regla llamada ‘Título 42’, que impide la llegada de personas que vienen a pedir asilo debido a la pandemia… El presidente Biden decide que los niños que vienen no acompañados por sus padres van a ser una excepción a esta regla”, explicó, y agregó que por esa razón “Muchos padres envan solos a sus niños después de ellos haber sido expulsados como familia de EE.UU”. Desde Madrid nos atendió José María Olmo, jefe de Investigación de El Confidencial, con quien conversamos sobre el tema de la aerolínea Plus Ultra: “Detrás de esta pequeña aerolínea hay varios empresarios venezolanos, vinculados al régimen de Nicolás Maduro… Dos de ellos están en el punto de mira de EE.UU, porque el dinero que usaron para entrar en el accionado procede de un banco que se está usando para lavar dinero”, nos contó. También nos atendió el jefe de redacción en la revista Frontier Myanmar, Ben Dunant, quien nos habló acerca de la situación de represión en Birmania: “Para llegar al terreno de una guerra civil no lo veo factible, porque el enfrentamiento por parte de la población civil se da con armas caseras, frente al poderío y las armas convencionales que maneja el ejército de Myanmar”, explicó. El periodista estima que “Lamentablemente, la represión en Myanmar va a continuar y esta situación puede extenderse sin límite en el tiempo”. Con Rosa Meneses, reportera de El Mundo especialista en Oriente Medio, conversamos sobre la situación en Jordania tras un supuesto intento de desestabilización: “Se puso en arresto domiciliario al príncipe Hamzah, que es hermanastro del actual rey Abdalá, y se detuvo como a 16 personas muy prominentes en el reino”, contó. La periodista mencionó que “El Palacio Real dijo que el príncipe Hamzah firmaba su lealtad al rey Abdalá y que se ponía a disposición de él y su heredero… El príncipe Hamzah parece que se ha retractado en su actitud”. También destacó: “Navalny ha perdido 5kg, según su médico personal, desde que comenzó la huelga de hambre, y en total 13kg desde que llegó a prisión”.
