In this episode, we had the joy of being joined, back in January of this year, by Tim Hyatt, the Head of UK Residential at Knight Frank. Unlike the vast majority of our guests, Tim didn’t actually go to university but offers such a fresh perspective on the arguments both for and against a uni education. He discusses why he sometimes regrets not studying for a degree, instead going straight into full-time work after leaving school, but also why he thinks he wouldn’t be where he is today if he’d followed the more traditional route. We left our conversation with Tim feeling utterly inspired and almost overwhelmed by his honesty and vulnerability. This episode is a special one and we hope you love it as much as we did. * Grad Life by the Horns is a podcast covering every element of graduate life. We are nearing the end of Season 3, and also approaching our one year anniversary! So, hosts and graduates Becki and Sophie decided to have a catch up, reflect on the past year (and what a rollercoaster it's been) in the hopes that listeners can resonate and enjoy! * In this episode, Becki and Sophie talk about everything that has happened over the past year and the aspects they have learnt about grad life. Through experiences, highs and lows and the conversations they have had with their wonderful guests - a lot has changed. In the format of asking each other 3 questions (much like waaay back to Episode 2) they managed to keep to some kind of structure! Becki is living in London, working in social media in the real estate industry and rolling out Knight Frank podcasts and freelance journalism. Sophie is working with management consultants as a freelancer, applying for jobs and just started renting with her partner. It's hard for Becki and Sophie to not natter on about grad life (as it is a passion topic after all). However, to give you a bit of a summary, they discuss the value of your degree, work environments, job applications, different kinds of relationships, moving house and to the big city, being bold, finances, and how to manage those good and bad weeks. A lot of this is filtered through the difficult time we are in now, but it also routes back to last year and what we hope for in the future. If you feel the same way or want to chat about anything that was discussed, Becki and Sophie's inboxes are always open! To give you a glimmer of context, Kaylee is an award winning Radio Presenter and DJ, podcast host, LGBTQ+ rights and Black Lives Matter activist, body positivity influencer and so much more. We are so grateful for her coming on and talking about being your true authentic self, representation in broadcasting, and getting into the competitive industry. We hope you, as graduates, get as much out of this as we did. * Moving from Birmingham to London to study Radio and Digital Production at the University of Westminster, Kaylee's love for radio grew and has come on leaps and bounds. Being resourceful and determined enough to accumulate lots of experience in community and university radio, she has managed to explore the avenues of producing, presenting and DJing at Radar Radio, Bauer Media Group, and The Beat London. Alongside her busy schedule, she DJs and presents in The Beat London Saturday's 4 - 7pm which celebrates Urban Music and R&B, HipHop, Reggae, Dancehall, Soca, Afrobeats and much more. As well as this, Kaylee is the host of the podcast 'On Your Gaydar' which opens up voices from the LGBTQ+ community a combines comedy, stories ("The T") and education. In this episode, the topic of diversity in the radio industry is discussed at length and just how much needs to be done to improve representation. Kaylee, alongside Grad Life by the Horns producer Pulama Kaufman and Sara Hebil-Motie, founded and developed the Radio Silence Movement to bring the statistics to the surface and pledge to put pressure on the industry to diversify. She has gained so much experience on the music scene, interviewed tonnes of well-known and up-and-coming artists and has learnt to fully embrace herself and have full confidence in her abilities. She offers countless tips and anecdotes on how to best access and navigate radio and broadcasting, especially as a minority. On her social media, she conveys a wonderful message to be unapologetically yourself and actively stop comparing yourself to others - learning to focus on what you do have and not on what you don't. She has grown the LikeMindedFemales Network to 17K + followers internationally and has facilitated important conversations in hundreds of workshops, community projects and corporate coaching. Sonya enables and empowers women and underrepresented groups into tech, business & entrepreneurship. Her online presence offers skills and advice in LinkedIn profiling and networking, public speaking and mindsets. To name a few, she discussed the importance of learning languages, being a fitness influencer and socialising as a young adult and being 'sober-curious'.  * Our guest this week is the positively lovely, Rachel Hosie. She studied for a degree in French and German at the University of Bristol, during which time she spent a year abroad, teaching English to German children and teenagers in Bavaria for six months. This was followed by a six-month internship with BBC News in their Brussels bureau. After university, Rachel worked for The Telegraph as a lifestyle assistant on Stella Magazine, before moving to The Independent in 2016 to become a lifestyle writer. She quickly moved up the ranks to become a Assistant Lifestyle Editor and, alongside Olivia Petter, hosted the chart topping 'Millennial Love' podcast for The Independent. On the podcast, she interviewed a multitude of people, including Jamie Laing, Elizabeth Day and Dolly Alderton, on their stories of love and relationships. In 2018, Rachel decided to move on from The Independent and took on a new role as a Senior Lifestyle Reporter at Insider where she now writes a regular fitness column and (pre-Covid) travelled around the world for stories. Since lockdown, she decided to stay with her family and shares nothing but positivity and gratitude online. Dom is an Editorial Graduate at the Telegraph, fellow and previous Sheffield student alongside Becki and an all round wonderful person. To name a few, we discussed topics such as mental health in the media, finding great stories and relocating for work, plus much more. * Our guest this week is Dominic Penna; journalist, mental health activist and brilliant storyteller. Studying at the University of Sheffield in International Relations and Politics, Dom decided to continue his learning and dive into a masters degree in Journalism. During university and beyond, Dom accumulated a breadth of experiences in journalism and discusses how important it is to be inquisitive, ask connections and grab any experience you can. As a result, Dom managed to garner internships and roles at The Tab, The Times, The Guardian, RightsInfo and finally moving to London to work as an Editorial Graduate at The Independent. Alongside volunteering for the (somewhat famous) Tab Sheffield, Dom is an astounding advocate and campaigner for mental health; operating as Sheffield SU's Mental Health Matters Society as Web and Publicity Officer. Dom highlights the mental health issues that exist in the media and journalism. In continuation, Dom reflects nothing but wonderful, open and authentic stories in his journalism and uses social media, especially Twitter, to engage with trends and core topics in society. As someone who feels that the person is the centre of journalism, Dom discusses how he has fallen in love with bringing out others' stories and providing a trusted news source for readers and consumers. Having said this, we discussed with Dom about the issues surrounding 'trusted' news and how social media plays a part in this - creating reactive mindsets. With graduates, this manifests as a reason to create unhealthy comparisons and to often be exposed to things that are product not process, and Dom breaks down how to manage this and being proud of what you achieve mindfully. We absolutely loved speaking to Dom, and he even featured in Part 2 of our Takeover 'How to Grad Life by the Horns in the World Today' (episode 17). When we spoke to Angelica, it was a matter of days before she regretfully had to postpone her 'She Started it Live' festival due to coronavirus. Since then, Angelica has been dedicated to finding her authentic purpose and her 'why' in business, bringing her values to the surface and learning how to manage expectations. 'About Time' Magazine is platformed as a 'digital lifestyle for the curious Londoner' and boasts 1000s of engaged readers across the globe. But she doesn't stop there. 'She Started It' is a vessel for 'shining a spotlight on the UK's brightest female entrepreneurs' and expands into events, festivals, an online academy and a podcast.
